Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok

Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok is one of the best rooftop restaurants bars in the world. In fact I really doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok. I would certainly like to know if there is any place more spectacular than Sirocco which is located of the 64th floor of the State Tower building in Bangkok.

Otherwise known as the Dome the distinctive gold roof glints in the Bangkok sunshine and can be seen from all over this great city. The tower is also home to the Lebua Hotel, for a great room rate just use this link.

Sky bar at Sirocco is amazing, the restaurant is very popular with the trendy Bangkok crowd, the food is good but the price is ridiculously high.

Great location close to the Sky Train and the river ferries. One of the nicest ways to spend an hour in Bangkok is cruising along the mighty Chao Phraya river. The river ferry takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.

Here are some friends of mine from Wiltshire west of London. Naturally among the many places I showed them in Bangkok Sirocco was a must see. Of course we also did a canal cruise on a long-tail boat.

As you would expect the food is fabulous but the price is very high. Make sure you have your credit card with you. 🙂

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

Waiting for sunset

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok is one of the many sky bars in this great city. I doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok.

Mode Sathorn Hotel

Located on the 38th floor of the Mode Sathorn Hotel which is right next door to Surasak sky train. A nice relaxing atmosphere and the drinks are rather expensive as you would expect.

The Bangkok afternoon traffic builds up just before sunset.

High above the traffic.

The bar opens at 6pm so you can have an early drink and wait for the sunset. It was rather disappointing on this particular due the the haze caused by farmers burning off in the north of the country.

One this evening I enjoyed pre dinner drinks before dining at the Wine Connection in Patpong.

A short train ride to Patpong and to will find the Wine Connection, an excellent restaurant.

The lovely lady is the Roof manager, very friendly with a beautiful smile. She has worked at some other bangkok Roof bars and I think the 38 bars is very lucky to have her on the staff.

As I mentioned earlier the wonderful Sirocco is perched on top at the 64th floor.

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok is known as the cities original red light district. These days it is more popular as a night market, however many pole dancing & beer bars are still there. These days Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are more popular so called entertainment areas.

I notice many of the items here are so much cheaper if you shop at Chinatown.

It was a Tuesday night and very quiet, perhaps it was a little early for the crowds at Patpong Road Bangkok.

Most of the bars are in the next street which runs parallel to this one.

Travelling from Europe to Australia in 1993 naturally I had to stopover in Bangkok for some R & R.

The Inn Saladaeng

A very nice little hotel a short walk to Patpong. You will get a very good rate if you book through this link.

The hotel is only a 10 minute walk to Cloud 47 one of Bangkok’s fabulous Sky Bars.

Right next door to the hotel is this very good burger restaurant, good food and cold beer, but for some reason they don’t serve wine.

There is no doubt Thai people have taken street food to an art form.

Sala Daeng skytrain station is about 200 meters from the main Patpong area. If you are travelling from Nana or Asoke on Sukhumvit you need to change trains at Siam station.

Chao Phraya river ferry which takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. B40 to get to Chinatown from the Sathorn pier is a bargain.

Bankok’s famous Long-tail boat

The long-tail boat, known as Ruea Hang Yao is a type of watercraft native to Southeast Asia, which uses a common automotive engine as a readily available and maintainable power-plant. A craft designed to carry passengers on a river may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters, and a canopy. There is much variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look. The sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

The boat is certainly not in the luxury class however it is cheap and efficient. Announcements are made to give you warning that your stop in next.

The River comprises of 2 buildings with 74 and 42 floors with 838 units.

The enclosed 360° rooftop lounge on the 32nd floor of the Millennium Hotel provides some of the best views over Bangkok and the Chao Phraya River. The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic. A great venue for cocktails with the accompaniment of some mellow jazz music in the background.

Completed in 1994 the condominium comprises of a single building with 31 floors and 478 units. A 66 square meter apartment on the 34th floor is currently for rent at B25,000 per month.

Cold beer in Chinatown

The Bangkok river ferry got me to Chinatown along the mighty Chao Phraya river which is known as the River of Kings. It is the life blood of Bangkok, around 50,000 people use its ferries each day. Slow barges bearing cargo coast upstream, kids still frolic in the brown water. Wooden shacks, mottled by the elements, still hang over the water. Check out my photo blog here.

Soaring hotels and condominiums hem in solemn temples, churches and civic buildings that look 19th century European, while close by the odd wooden sampan sells noodle soup or dried squid to hungry river workers. It is this juxtaposition of calm and chaotic, modern and traditional, religious and secular, ugly and sublime, foreign and indigenous that makes the Chao Phraya so evocative. Not everybody is happy on the river

A Vietnamese cargo ship ploughed into riverside houses along the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng district yesterday April 5t 2017, damaging three homes.

Residents fled to the streets in panic as the cargo ship loomed over them. Three houses were damaged, one badly, but nobody was injured.

Welcome to Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing is a hive of activity as you would expect, narrow lanes with thousands of people hunting for bargains.

Thien Fah Foundation

The Tien Fa foundation was formed in 1902, making it the oldest charitable society in Bangkok. The foundation provides free medical care to the indigent. The buildings surrounding the shrine actually house the hospital facilities.

The foundation is on Yaowarat Road just a short distance from the Chinatown gate in the circle.

The Chinese community in Bangkok pre-dates the founding of the Thai capital in the city. Indeed, the land where the grand palace is today was originally a community of Chinese traders. When King Rama I decided to establish the capital on the site of the village of Bangkok, he asked the traders to move. They settled to the east of the new city, along the river. It may be hard to believe today, but the narrow Sampaeng Lane, which isn’t even big enough for a car, was once the Chinatown Bangkok main street.

The best way to see the area is to pick a starting point and wander around.

What could possibly go wrong?

Very handy transport, however usually the drivers try to badger you into visiting a gem store etc so they can receive a kickback. Taxis are a far better option, cheaper and air conditioned.

Prices are notably cheaper here than other parts of the city, of course haggling is expected. 🙂

Absolutely amazing

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok offers a breathtaking view of this wonderful city. Perched on the 56th floor at Centara Grand Hotel on top of Central World shopping Mall.

Bistro and bar

A huge wines selection at the bistro which occupies the entire 55th floor, both indoor and outdoor dining sections to choose from, and the solely outdoor bar deck of the 56th floor wraps around the circular core of the building providing an uninterrupted 360 degree panorama of the amazing Bangkok metropolis.

Happy hour is 5 to 7 pm

Buy one get one free is a good deal as the price as you would expect at such a venue is rather high. A Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 so getting 2 for 1 is a good deal.

After happy hour finishes

Well that’s another story, some friends turned up and Lisa from Townsville was drinking champagne which turned out to be B1,100 per glass, which equals $42 AUD or $30 USD. Now that’s not really a problem but her and her friend John left without paying, subsequently Greg, the little guy in the middle got stuck with a huge drink bill. 🙂

Enough of that, back to the amazing view.

The Baiyoke tower is 85 stories and is the tallest building in Bangkok, it includes the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh-tallest all-hotel structure in the world.

Game changer

MahaNakhon is a luxury mixed-use skyscraper currently under construction in the Silom/Sathon central business area of Bangkok. Designed to fit into the Thai landscape with a unique pixelated facade, it will have the unconventional appearance of a glass curtain walled square tower with a cuboid-surfaced spiral cut into the side of the building. Upon its estimated completion in 2015, it will become the tallest building in Bangkok at 314 metres (1,030 ft), with 77 floors. Featuring hotel, retail and residences, 200 units of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok inside the building are priced between around US$1,100,000 to US$17,000,000, making it one of the most expensive condominiums in Bangkok. Bangkok Weekend December 2015 was a two day break from Pattaya, we discovered some great new bars and restaurants. In particular the Red Sky Bar, Above 11 and the Pirate Chambre. Xmas decorations were everywhere, the photo above is at Central shopping mall at Chidlom.

Due to open in Soi 4 Nana on December 23rd, sadly I believe it is destined to fail, wrong location, local “Cheap Charlies” will never pay extra for their drinks. They will sit opposite where the drinks are cheaper and the bar girls are available for extra activities.

Diagonally across the road is the infamous Nana Plaza with dozens of beer bars s and Go Go bars. Here I am with my friend Hamish from Pattaya, I’ll bail out around 10 pm and Hamish will kick on to dawn. 🙂

CentralWorld Bangkok

CentralWorld is a shopping plaza and complex in Bangkok. It is the sixth largest shopping complex in the world. The complex, which includes a hotel and office tower, is owned by Central Pattana. The Red Sky Bar has an impressive 360-degree panoramic view from its 55th floor. Check out my photo blog here.

There are many wonderful shopping malls in Bangkok, at the moment my favourite is EmQuartier opposite the Emporium.

Terrific new Bangkok restaurant, the Pirate Chambre at Chidlom. Hard to find but worth the effort. The fabulous lamb shank was only B480.

A Bangkok icon hidden in a small alley off Soi 11. RIP Charlie, the good news is they will try to relocate elsewhere.

Almost opposite Cheap Charlie’s is this rather interesting restaurant. I can’t comment too much as all I tried was the seafood chowder, which was rather good.

In Bangkok the building never stops, another skyscraper is coming out of the ground on Sukhumvit between Soi 11 & 13. Here is my photo blog on Bangkok’s building boom.

Eggs Benedict at the JW Marriott

Normally breakfast here is excellent, not so today. It took 40 minutes to arrive and was not up to the usual excellent Marriott standard, perhaps they were having an off day. Plus even after using my Griffin card which gives me a 20% discount, the price with a Latte was 387 Baht or $15 aud. Cheap by Australian standards but a little expensive for Thailand. I’m probably only complaining because the food quality was less than it normally is + I don’t like hash browns or cooked tomato. 🙂

River cruise to Chinatown

I took a river ferry to Chinatown for a B40 fare, a great way to see some of Bangkok’s most iconic buildings.

Bangkok City Building Boom

Bangkok City Building Boom, it never ceases to amaze me, each time I visit there are new skyscrapers reaching for the clouds. Above is River City shopping mall beside the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel on the Chao Phraya River.

Sathorn Nakorn Tower

A modern Salom office building located at 100 Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra Rd., Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500.

Bangkok City Building Boom State Tower

Built in 2001, it is the largest building in South-east Asia, on the roof is Sirocco, one of the best roof top bars in the world. I often stay close by at Centre Point hotel, in fact I took this photo from my hotel window. Use this link for an excellent room rate. However if you prefer to stay in this magnificent tower book into the upmarket Lebua hotel through this link.

In my opinion this is the World’s best sky bar.

Centre Point Hotel & Robinson shopping mall

The hotel is connected to the shopping mall and only a 5 minute walk to the sky train and river ferries. Use this link for an excellent room rate.

A new tower is under construction on the left and the vacant block is screaming out for development.

Q Sukhumvit is a 42 floor building with 273 residential properties.

Adjacent to Nana BTS, in the left of the previous photo you will see the exact location.

As in many countries buildings beside the railways stations tend to bring the highest rent for obvious reasons.

Marriott Marquis Queens Park Hotel

This well known hotel in Soi 22 has 2000 rooms and is being totally renovated. It opened in 2017 as an addition to the Marriott chain.

Opened in March 2015 and I never thought I would say it but Bangkok now rivals Tokyo with the highest quality food presentation in the world.

Another wonderful design the hotel is expected to open late 2016. Central Embassy will be hoping they will bring potential customers as their traffic since opening has been disappointing.

Restaurants bars Sukhumvit Soi 11 Bangkok is my favourite street in Nana, so many good bars, restaurants & hotels. Only a short stroll to Nana station and much cleaner & more interesting than Soi 4.

One of the things that make Thailand a fascination country are the street vendors.

This was Saturday October 31st 2015, a double reason to hit the bars, Halloween and the rugby world cup.

The Irish bar at Citadines hotel which is open 24 hours per day.

Citadines hotel is a great location to stay in Bangkok, right in the middle of the action.

The rooms are compact and nicely laid out including a kitchen if you like to prepare some food.

Another very popular bar in Soi 11, good low cost food and a happy atmosphere.

Bratwurst sausages and potato salad, what else are you going to eat at the Beerhouse? 🙂

Oskars bar and restaurant

Next door to Citadines hotel is Oskars, a very popular bar restaurant with good food and always single Thai girls looking for a date.

The food was very good however it is more bar than restaurant, the later it gets the noisier it gets.

Cheap Charlies at Super Sukhumvit Soi 11

An iconic Bangkok bar in a small alley off Soi 11. A great spot to have a pre dinner drink before choosing one of the many restaurants in this great little back street Bangkok lane.

Sadly Charlies is no longer there, the area is being re-developed, so at the end of May 2017 we said bye bye Charlie.

I have stayed at the Ambassador a few times, make sure you get a room in the tower. Use this link for an excellent room rate.

I used to have breakfast in the Pattaya branch of this chain before it closed late 2016, good bacon & egg croissants & coffee. This Soi 11 branch on the ground floor is part of the Ambassador hotel. There is an Italian restaurant above.

But wait, there’s more

The choices of street food in Bangkok is endless.

Just a few meters from Nana station is an excellent small hotel tucked away in a lane off Soi 11. If you use this link you will get a room for around B1100.

Next door to i-Check Inn is Yuma

Quite an authentic Japanese restaurant, however I was disappointed in the skewers, but the salmon Roe was excellent. I’m probably hard to please after just returning from a fabulous trip to Japan.

Citadines to Nana Plaza

A five minute walk from Citadines to Nana station and a 10 minute walk to the infamous Nana Plaza.

Goodbye Charlie

Cheap Charlie’s and a handful of other popular bars and restaurants on Sukhumvit Soi 11, will be closed to make room for real estate development. The owner of Cheap Charlie’s has revealed that the one-rai parcel of land, where the bar has sat for 34 years, has been sold and the bar will be closed as of March 2017.

March 31 2017 sadly Cheap Charlies is no more.

JW Marriott hotel Bangkok is at Soi 2 Sukhumvit, a short walk to both Ploenchit & Nana station. It’s a luxury five star hotel with some wonderful restaurants. My friend Tony Murphy and I enjoy a very good breakfast in the Bangkok Baking Company. There is another Marriott worth visiting in Soi 57 Sukhumvit, have a cocktail at the wonderful roof bar 48 floors above the ground.

You can either order from the menu or nominate what you prefer and it will be prepared for you.

Executive chef

Michael Hogan looks after all the wonderful restaurants at the JW Marriott, he loves Bangkok and is an Aussie from Banora Point, which is at the southern end of Australia’s Gold Coast.

The bakery among many other delicacies has a range of delicious pies, I usually take a few back to Pattaya after visiting Bangkok.
