Amazing Bangkok buses

Amazing Bangkok buses transporting tourists all over Thailand, many are decorated in bizarre colours often featuring Japanese cartoon & Disney characters. Eagles, serpents you name it they have got it. I have never seen anything like it anywhere in the world, take a bow Thailand for giving us so many great photo opportunities.

I have no idea how they produce these amazing creations, I’m guessing it’s all created on computer then automatically painted on the production line, then again how would I know? 🙂

There was a comment on Facebook that explained to process, it is a vinyl wrap, using the same machines that produce outdoor posters, then they just wrap them round the bus.

Six exhausts and speakers for sound.

This beast is one of my favourites

It was parked a few meters from where I live in Soi 1 Pattaya so I was able to have a close look.

Eight lethal exhaust pipes

Imagine if a motorbike crashed into the back of this bus, the exhaust pipes were on a 45 degree angle with sharp edges pointing upwards. Perfectly positioned to impale a human being. You gotta love Thailand.

Beach Road Pattaya

Every morning hundreds of buses converge on Beach Road Pattaya bringing thousands Chinese tourists who board the boats to go para-sailing and visit Koh Larn island.

And the beat goes on, it must be a prestige thing the way some of these guys push it to the limit.

Or so the song goes, I really want to ask a question, do you think this guy is trying just a little too hard?

36000 buses idle

Tour bus operators are in dire need of measures to cushion the impact of the coronavirus crisis, as an idle fleet of 36,000 buses countrywide has already missed out on 7 billion baht in income during the sluggish tourism period.

President of the Thai Transportation Operators Association, said that while tourism was at its peak, each bus could generate 50,000 baht a day from tour services.

The current lack of income has led operators to carry a cost burden of roughly 2 million baht from each bus leased, and they don’t have enough cash for installment payments.

Siam Paragon Shopping Mall

Siam Paragon Shopping Mall Bangkok opened about 15 years ago in 2006, I remember how impressed I was with this amazing new shopping mall with it’s wide aisles and fabulous food court and supermarket.

Now of course there are many new super malls in Bangkok to compete with including Central Embassy and EmQuartier.

Shops on the 1st floor

Here is a guide to some of the shops.

Siam Paragon, Hanging fences

Another photo taken way back in 2006 of the Siam Paragon, Hanging fences, I’m not sure if they are still there or not.

The Main floor

Strangely the level that is linked to the skywalk is called the Main Floor, despite it being one above the ground, and the floors above that are then the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, up to the 5th, which is taken up by the Cineplex and its 15 large size theatres. There is direct access to the centre from Siam BTS Skytrain station.

Only 5 minutes walk on an elevated path from the well know MBK centre.

As I mentioned for Siam Paragon get of at Siam station, MBK is actually one stop further at National Stadium station.

One thing is for certain the Thai people love their food and there are plenty of options at Siam Paragon to keep them happy.

Bangkok Hotels Markets Shopping, Petchaburi Rd is surrounded by some of the best shopping in this great city. Everybody knows about Pratunam markets where you can buy clothes and accessories at rock bottom prices, now however there is much more competition at places like Palladium World and Platinum Fashion Mall which offer air conditioned comfort which you certainly don’t get at Pratunam markets.

GLOW Pratunam Bangkok Hotels Petchaburi

Right opposite Pantip Plaza the well known Bangkok I.T. centre. Book through THIS LINK for a discounted room rate.

Several floors of hardware and software, I have been shopping here for 20 years.

Computer and camera shops are located on the 3rd floor, as well as hardware, RAM etc for sale. Some shops specialize in building computers to your specifications. The fourth floor has more computer and repair shops.

Platinum Fashion Mall

Platinum is a 5 billion Baht shopping mall in Petchaburi Rd Pratunam, almost next door to Pantip Plaza, which specializes in fashion clothes and accessories both retail and wholesale.

Baiyoke Sky Hotel

Baiyoke Sky Hotel was built in 1997 and is the 2nd highest building in Bangkok. For an excellent room rate book through THIS LINK.

I took this photo from the Red Sky bar above Central, on the right is the Novotel and Palladium World Shopping mall.

Amari Watergate Hotel

The Amari Watergate hotel is a reasonably priced hotel in the middle of this shopping district, book through THIS LINK and you will get a discounted room for around $88 + tax.

Located on the corner of Phetchaburi Road and Ratchaprarop with the 3 gold domes, I believe it’s bigger and cheaper than Platinum Fashion Mall and has a bazaar type layout featuring long alleyways of tightly packed stalls.

It certainly does not look as spectacular as it does from the Red Sky Bar.

After a couple of hours walking there is nothing like a foot massage. 🙂

Sukhumvit Rd Ploenchit building boom

Sukhumvit Rd Ploenchit building boom is in full swing. Chock-a-block full of high rise office buildings, up-market condos, lots of embassies, luxury hotels & very expensive shopping malls. I love the area which is close to where I stay in Soi 11 Nana.

Weird & wonderful

Most of these modern buildings can be seen from the sky train which is by far the best way to move around Bangkok.

Sukhumvit Rd Ploenchit building boom

Is another huge building site which will add another sky scraper to the Ploenchit skyline.

One of my favourite buildings on Sukhumvit Road Ploenchit

Park Ventures recently achieved the highest office rental in Bangkok of B900 per M2 per month. The building is 35 stories high and has an elevated walkway leading to the station and various shopping malls including Central World which is directly opposite. The section jutting out is the infinity at the Okura Hotel.

The Okura Prestige Bangkok is a super luxurious hotel in the building, for a discounted rate USE THIS LINK.

Rated 9.1 by Agoda

As you can see it is rather special and in a great location. Using THIS LINK will get you a room for under $200.

Great design the Park Hyatt Sukhumvit Road Ploenchit

Park Hyatt Bangkok, opening on May 12th 2017, has its sights set on being the capital’s leading icon of luxury and hotels in Bangkok. Presenting internationally inspired architecture and interior design; exceptional accommodation. Central Embassy will be hoping they will bring potential customers as their traffic since opening has been disappointing.

These great walkways take you off the street

Linking hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and offices these modern walkways are quite fantastic. You can walk from Ploenchit to Chidlom and Central Embassy and Central world.

Prestige companies, condos, hotels etc really love the Ploenchit Chidlom area of Bangkok.

Now if it’s good food you want…..

Right beside Chidlom station is terrific Bangkok restaurant, the Pirate Chambre. A little hard to find but worth the effort, there is a walkway from the station. The fabulous lamb shank was only B480.

JW Marriott Hotel Sukhumvit Road Ploenchit

Breakfast at the JW Marriott bakery on Sukhumvit Road Ploenchit is always a pleasure & the coffee is excellent. Just a short walk to Ploenchit station, for an excellent room rate at the fine hotel USE THIS LINK TO BOOK.

Weekend Bangkok May 2016 included visiting new restaurants, sky bars & shopping malls. It’s nice to have a break from Pattaya which is where I live 2 hours south of Bangkok.

Dinner at Via Vai

My friend Hamish Elton and I in Soi 8 eating Italian food which was ok without making you want to rush back.

Via Vai is opposite Monsoon which is one of my favourite Bangkok restaurants.

The Game sports bar

On Sukhumvit beside Nana station this bar has lots of screens showing all the sports. A separate smoking area overlooks the footpath which spares the drinkers inside the bar. The header to this post is a favourite shot of mine that was taken at “The Game”, I call it Minnesota Fats racking them up. 🙂

At best it was barely average, next time I’ll try something different.

Now if it’s good food you want…..

A terrific new Bangkok restaurant, the Pirate Chambre at Chidlom. Hard to find but worth the effort. The fabulous lamb shank was only B480.

A very busy intersection, you can see the building where the Long Table sky bar Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke.

A very good breakfast and the coffee is excellent. Plus I have a 20% discount card.

Every now and then I take a photo I really like, this is one of those. It was taken at “The Game”, sports bar in Nana and I call it “Minnesota Fats racking them up.” 🙂

Central Embassy Shopping Mall Bangkok in Chidlom is full of high end designer stores, all the famous labels are here. There is direct access from two sky train stations, Chidlom and Ploenchit. It is also connected to Central Chidlom which is their flagship store.

Amazing architecture

Everything about Central Embassy oozes class & luxury, some of the many labels include Versace, Gucci, Prada, Givenchy and many more, in other words it’s way above my pay grade. 🙂

From memory according to Merryl Streep the devil wears it. A great friend of mine in Australia often refers to his wife as “The Prada Princess”, that’s ok because he can afford her expensive tastes.

And the beat goes on

I remember visiting the spot where Versace was shot dead in 1997 on the steps of his Miami home. Fifty is way too young to die.

A word of warning to my male friends, don’t tell your wife about Central Embassy Shopping Mall.

There are many branches in Bangkok including EmQuartier another favourite mall of mine.

There are many of these converted VWs where I live in Pattaya, what a great idea. No way you could do it in Australia, far too many ridiculous rules and regulations. 🙂

Central Embassy Shopping Mall has a great feel about it, uncluttered and luxurious, I have a lot more to investigate on my next Bangkok visit.

Long Table sky bar Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke. Walk in the door and this is the fabulous view of Bangkok. Obviously not as high as many of the Bangkok sky bars but still offers an incredible view of this great city. Photo credit Asia Web Direct.

Happy hour is 5 pm to 7 pm, you get 2 for 1 drinks so two cold beers will only cost you B210.

One of my favourite pastimes is to watch the sunset over the Big Mango while sipping an ice cold Carlsberg.

The city starts to light up, this was Sunday May 15 2016, during the week the view is better at night as more lights are on in the buildings.

There is actually a Red Sky bar in Bangkok, it is one of the most spectacular views in the city, just follow THIS LINK.

It is a very long table.

It is easy to see why they call it the Long Table sky bar Bangkok.

A wonderful Bangkok food hall

Central food hall Bangkok is quite fantastic, smaller perhaps than other bigger malls close by however the quality and presentation is first class.

Central has several department store branches in Bangkok, Chidlom however is their flagship store and attracts many expats and “well to do” Thai shoppers.

BBQ duck is delicious at Four Seasons

It does not get much better than this, there is another branch just up the road at the Siam Paragon.

So many great food choices here and so little time. 🙂

Did I mention the choices?

The number of restaurant choices here is staggering, there are over 50 listed here, there are even cooking classes you can attend.

Catering for the Germans.

What a terrific display at this specialty Bavarian food stall, you just have to buy something.

The displays are so inviting

It really is a pleasure to shop or eat here, everything is presented beautifully.

For all you seafood lovers

A selection of salmon to die for, get your dose of amiga 3 here.

You will need some wine as well

If you can’t find something that suits you here you are just not trying. Wines from all the great regions of the world are on sale here.

Many years ago in Sydney Australia I owned a liquor store, believe me it was nothing like you see here. In those days I would store my favourite reds until it was the right time to drink them and what an incredible difference that made.

I sometimes visit friends of mine in Australia who have a vineyard, now that is a lot of fun, follow this link to see what I mean.

The Central seven story building is dwarfed by a number of modern buildings opposite on Sukhumvit road.

Good value Bangkok hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels are very good value in this part of the city. I place these hotels in the under B1,700 category, which is under $50 USD. The photo above is on Sukhumvit close to Soi 4 Nana.

Without a doubt AGODA is the best online Hotel booking site.

Lets check out the Dynasty Inn.

The Dynasty Inn is in Sukhumvit Soi 4 Nana, a few meters from the infamous Nana Plaza. I can highly recommend this 2.5 star hotel because I have stayed there probably 50 times in the last 20 years. For lots of information regarding Nana Plaza check out my blog.

Dynasty Grande

Just around the corner at 21 Soi Sukhumvit 6, Sukhumvit Rd is the more upmarket Dynasty Grande, very good large rooms, I would rate it 3 to 3.5 stars. Rooms are around 2,000 Baht per night or $60. Bear in mind that is the same rate at Centre Point in Silom which is a much better hotel. The Dynasty however is a good choice for those who can’t resist the lure of Nana Plaza. If you use this link you can sometimes get a room for B2000.

Citadines hotel is a great location in Soi 11 Sukhumvit to stay in Bangkok, right in the middle of the action. Mulligans 24 hour Irish pub is on the ground floor.

The rooms are compact and nicely laid out including a kitchen if you like to prepare some food.

I-Check Inn Soi 11

Just a few meters from Nana station is this excellent small hotel tucked away is a lane off Soi 11. If you use this link you will get a room for around B1100.

Hotel Icon

The Hotel Icon is a short walk to Nana Plaza and Ploenchit Sky train. It is quite new and in a good location.

Woraburi Bangkok budget hotels

Located a fair distance down Soi 4 Nana, they provide a shuttle to Sukhumvit every 30 minutes. Make sure you book a superior room, use this link for a great price.

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels close to Nana Plaza.

On the ground floor are mostly open-air beer bars to choose from. Girls will try to tempt you in for a drink or a game of Jenga but not much really happens here, however it is where I prefer to drink and watch the passing parade. The shows and the A Go Go Bars with naughty names like Lollipop,Pretty Lady and Red Lips are located on the first floor. Girls here will step into your path and will try to drag you in for a look.

Terminal 21 Bangkok, food shopping and entertainment at this convenient shopping mall right beside Asoke railway station on Sukhumvit Road.

Relaxing in the air-conditioning

Bangkok temperatures are so high many people like to relax in the cool shopping malls. Terminal 21 is not as modern as many other Bangkok malls such as Siam Centre, The Emporium or EmQuartier however it offers all the attractions such as low cost food, a supermarket and a convenient central location.

Terminal 21 Bangkok food allows you to eat cheaply from as little as B30 a dish, or you can go more upmarket if you wish.

Victoria’s Secret

Lots of upmarket fashion shops to keep the ladies happy and spending their money.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit

Adjacent to Terminal 21 Bangkok is the upmarket Westin Hotel, only a 5-minute walk from the Sukhumvit metro sky train and a 10-minute walk from the lake and gardens at Benjakiti Park. Use this link for a great room rate.

Luxury skyscrapers

As you can clearly see the surrounding area is full of luxury upmarket buildings. In fact there seems to be a building boom all over the city.

Mini Golden Gate bridge

Terminal 21 has a spectacular mini Golden Gate Bridge spanning the central atrium. In fact each floor has a theme for a different city.

Famous for ribs, I had not eaten at Tony’s for 10 years when they were on Sukhumvit at Nana.

Carolina Honey Ribs

They tasted as good as they looked but I really should have ordered the half serve, the standard was a little too much for me.

Washed down with red wine

The waitress gave me a nice bag to carry home the 1/2 a bottle that I still had left.
