Brussels beer fries mussels

Grand Place, a beautiful square.

Brussels beer fries mussels

Brussels beer fries mussels

Brussels beer fries mussels chocolate, closely followed by chocolate. These are some of the main impressions this city leaves on you. The city itself I found rather ordinary except for the magnificent Grand Place, for me this is one of Europe’s great squares. The square is the most important tourist destination and most memorable landmark in Brussels. It measures 68 by 110 meters (223 by 361 ft), and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Grand Place

Brussels beer fries mussels chocolate

At the beginning of the 13th century, three indoor markets were built on the northern edge of the Grand Place; a meat market, a bread market and a cloth market. These buildings, which belonged to the Duke of Brabant, allowed the wares to be showcased even in bad weather, but also allowed the Dukes to keep track of the storage and sale of goods, in order to collect taxes. Other buildings, made of wood or stone, enclosed the Grand Place.

Town Hall

Totally spectacular at night.

Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

Brussels beer fries mussels

The Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert (French) or Koninklijke Sint-Hubertusgalerijen (Dutch) is a glazed shopping arcade in Brussels that preceded other famous 19th-century shopping arcades such as the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Milan and The Passage in St Petersburg. Like them it has twin regular façades with distant origins in Vasari’s long narrow street-like courtyard of the Uffizi, Florence, with glazed arcaded shopfronts separated by pilasters and two upper floors, all in an Italianate Cinquecento style, under an arched glass-paned roof with a delicate cast-iron framework.

Entrance to Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert

Construction started on May 6, 1846. It lasted for 18 months, and the 213 meter passage was opened on June 20, 1847 by King Leopold and his two sons. In 1845 the Société named the three sections of the new passage the Galerie du RoiGalerie de la Reine and Galerie du Prince

Restaurants near the Grand Place.

Brussels beer fries mussels

The small alleys & streets around the Grand Place hold hundreds of restaurants and bars. I found about 80% of them had almost identical menus.  Mussels & fries washed down with Belgium beer is the most popular dish, I love the beer but sadly I not a fan of Mussels.

So many restaurants & so little time

Brussels beer fries mussels

This area is truly one of the world’s great eating precincts.

Brussels beer fries mussels chocolate

Brussels beer fries mussels

Lucky for me there are many paces that don’t feature Brussels beer fries on the menu. This restaurant precinct is one of the most impressive I have seen anywhere in the world. It’s certainly not just Brussels beer fries mussels chocolate.

Cafe Georgette in Brussels.

Brussels beer fries mussels

One of my favourite photos from Brussels.

French wine at Cafe Georgette in Brussels.

Brussels beer fries mussels

Cafe Georgette was a real find, located at Rue de la Fourche 37, 1000 Bruxelles, it has a cozy atmosphere & for solo diners like myself it allows you to watch the passing parade out the front window. My Tagliatelle with smoked salmon was perfect as was the Tiramisu.

Dining alone

Brussels beer fries mussels

This lady is like a female version of myself, dining alone with a Kindle for company.  😥

Belgian chocolate, YUM!

Brussels beer fries mussels chocolate

Belgium is famed for its high quality chocolate and over 2,000 chocolatiers, both small and large. Belgium’s association with chocolate goes back as far as 1635 when the country was under Spanish occupation. By the mid 18th century, chocolate was extremely popular in upper and middle class circles, particularly in the form of hot chocolate, including with Charles-Alexander of Lorraine, the Austrian governor of the territory. From the early 20th century, the country was able to import large quantities of cocoa from its African colony, the Belgian Congo. Both the chocolate bar and praline are inventions of the Belgian chocolate industry.  Today, chocolate is very popular in Belgium, with 172,000 tonnes produced each year, and widely exported.

Manneken Pis.

Brussels beer fries mussels

Just as popular as Belgian chocolate is Manneken Pis. There are several legends behind this statue, but the most famous is the one about Duke Godfrey III of Leuven. In 1142, the troops of this two-year-old lord were battling against the troops of the Berthouts, the lords of Grimbergen, in Ransbeke (now Neder-Over-Heembeek). The troops put the infant lord in a basket and hung the basket in a tree to encourage them. From there, the boy urinated on the troops of the Berthouts, who eventually lost the battle. Another legend states that in the 14th century, Brussels was under siege by a foreign power. The city had held its ground for some time, so the attackers conceived of a plan to place explosive charges at the city walls. A little boy named Julianske happened to be spying on them as they were preparing. He urinated on the burning fuse and thus saved the city. There was at the time (middle of the 15th century, perhaps as early as 1388) a similar statue made of stone. The statue was stolen several times.

The Triumphal arch

Brussels beer fries mussels

Triumphal arches are one of the most influential and distinctive types of architecture associated with ancient Rome. Thought to have been invented by the Romans, the triumphal arch was used to commemorate victorious generals or significant public events such as the founding of new colonies, the construction of a road or bridge, the death of a member of the imperial family or the accession of a new emperor.

I had a little luck on the bus, they didn’t charge me so instead of 22 Euros I rode for free.  😛

Brussels Opera house

Brussels beer fries mussels

Today the National Opera of Belgium, a federal institution, takes the name of the theater in which it is housed. Therefore, la Monnaie or de Munt refers both to the structure as well as the opera company. As Belgium’s leading opera house it is one of the few cultural institutions which receives financial support from the federal government of Belgium.

Two days Bangkok

November 6, 2021 by David Herd

Two days Bangkok

Two days Bangkok

Two days Bangkok seemed like a week because of all the walking I did, over 20,000 steps in 48 hours. By the time I got home to Pattaya I was desperate for a foot & leg massage. 🙂 My hotel was in a graet location, only 50 meters to Chit Lom sky train.

Nice room

Two days Bangkok

Great value at a low cost of B1100 pn, or $45 AUD.

An added bonus

Two days Bangkok

A very nice view from my room. For a terrific room rate just book through THIS LINK.

Chit Lom station

Two days Bangkok

Taken from the Golden House hotel, a terrific location.  Only 5 minutes walk to Central Embassy shopping mall.

Looking in the oposite direction

Two days Bangkok

One of the many fantastic Bangkok buildings.

But wait, there is more….

Two days Bangkok

Always someting to look at in this great city.

A shot from Chit Lom BTS.

El Mercado Bangkok 2021

And always something to photograph. 🙂

My favourite bangkok restaurant

El Mercado Bangkok 2021

This is one of 3 El Mercado branches, for more photos please follow THIS LINK.

Oysters from France

Low cost food Bangkok

Here is the main reason I love to dine at El Mercado. Beautiful Fine de Clare No 3 at B886 or $36 AUD, quite a good price for Bangkok, although I get them for $23 at L’Auberge in Pattaya. These were Fine de Clare No 3.

The Fines de Claires Oysters are exclusively produced in the Marennes-Oléron basin in France. They have an elongated shell which makes them easily recognizable.

The Fines de Claires Oysters are less fleshy than normal oysters and have a softer-coloured flesh. The Fines de Claires Oysters are rich in water and have a stronger, slightly sweeter taste thanks to the « affinage” made in ponds connected to seawater during the last weeks of the farming.

JW Marriott on Sukhumvit

Two days Bangkok

For many years I have been enjoying breakfast here.

And here it is

Two days Bangkok

Poached eggs, avocado & crispy bacon.

Late night snack

Two days Bangkok

Only the lonely. 🙂

Golden House location

Two days Bangkok

A great location in Bangkok.

Thanks for visiting my Two days Bangkok photo blog, there is no doubt this is one of the world’s great cities.

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya

November 16, 2020 by David Herd

Established in 1997

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya in Soi 13 has an excellent reputation for excellent food & service. Current TripAdvisor ranking is 31 out of 1,096 Restaurants in Pattaya.

Sunday roast

Sportsman Pub Restaurant

Well known for their “all you can eat” Sunday roast.

That gravy looks good.

Sportsman Pub Restaurant PattayaAlways crowded on a Sunday as you can imagine.

English breakfast as you would expect.

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya These day I don’t visit for their excellent breakfas because they don’t open till 9 pm which is too late for me.

Here is an interesting dish

Sportsman Pub Restaurant PattayaChicken curry Chinese style with fried rice, + battered prawns on the size.

Apple pie with custard & ice cream.

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya Make sure you leave room for this terrific desert.

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya

Sportsman Pub RestaurantCareful when ordering this tasty meal, very vey spicy. I asked them to tone it down for me but it was still rather hot. 🙂

Cottage pie

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya Excellent dish for B295, peas & gravy were perfect, carrots a little overcooked, was too much for me, so I took half home for lunch tomorrow. 🙂

I really like this photo

Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya

Ideally located between beach road and 2nd road on soi 13, very good food both English or Thai. A superb breakfast & Sunday lunch with a very good selection of beers. Whatever sport you want the staff will try & find for you, free WiFi as you would expect

For more information on the excellent venue just follow THIS LINK.

Thanks for visiting my Sportsman Pub Restaurant Pattaya photo blog. The Sportsman Pub and Restaurant has become an institution in Pattaya. Opened in 1997, the emphasis is on traditional and home-cooked English pub fare with all the trimmings. A recipient of Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence, the Sportsman prides itself on a welcoming and all-embracing atmosphere which includes all live sporting events on seven big screens.

Art of desert Pattaya

August 2, 2020 by David Herd

Art of desert Pattaya

Art of desert

Art of desert Pattaya is a far more interesting subject to me than the Art of War for instance, written by Sun Tzu in the 5th century. For some excellent images of the Art of Desert here is a LINK on Pinterest.

The photo above was taken at the Pullman Hotel at Wongamat Beach.

Belgian waffles at Patrick’s Steakhouse

Art of desert

Many people in these troubled times of Covid-19 will feel they are living in their own winter of discontent, well to brighten up their day just check out some of my favourite deserts in beautiful downtown Pattaya. 🙂

Great pancake at Leckerle

Art of desert

Researchers have found pancakes in the stomach of Otzi the Iceman, human remains dating back 5,300 years. In ancient Greece and Rome, pancakes were made from wheat flour, olive oil, honey, and curdled milk.

Magnificent Crème brûlée

Art of desert

France, England, and Spain all claim to be the country where crème brûlée had its origin. The first printed recipe for a dessert called crème brûlée is from the 1691.

A special from The Bistro at Soi Yamato 13/1.

Art of desert Tripadvisor rate this small restaurant very highly at #6 of 1,085 Restaurants in Pattaya

Mixture from the Mantra

Art of desert

Sadly the Mantra closed it’s doors in 2018, their Sunday buffet was the best I have ever seen anywhere in the world. Here is over a decade of dining on THIS LINK.

Mango & sticky rice

Art of desert

The iconic Thai desert needs no introduction, it’s simply wonderful.

Hollys Coffee

Art of desert

Without a doubt this is the best pancake I have ever eaten. 🙂 This company was established in 1998 and opened Korea’s first espresso shop that year. Its shops offer espresso, coffee, tea, specialty coffee- and tea-based hot and cold drinks, a variety of pastries and other snacks and coffee supplies.

Banana pancake

Art of desert Pattaya Absolutely delicious & only B40, or $2 AUD.

The finished product

Art of desert Pattaya Surely must be the best value in Pattaya, or perhaps even the northern hemisphere.

Thanks for visiting my Art of desert Pattaya photo blog, I will certainly add more delights as I discover them.

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

July 19, 2020 by David Herd

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya at the Royal Cruise hotel, which is named because it looks like an actual cruise ship. Malibrew is a rather spectacular bar & an interesting concept, with some good points & some bad which we will discuss below.

Main entrance is on Soi 2.

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

About 60 meters from Beach Road.

Happy hour is between 5 & 6 pm.

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya You can get 2 for one Singha for only B120 or $3.80 USD. The bar has only been open for a few days & strangely enough has no craft beer on sale yet.

Price list

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya Red wine is B290 per glass which is way too expensive in my opinion.

Open plan kitchen

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya The food is very reasonably priced.

Cold appetizers

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya good selection here.

Main course

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

Menu is a computer tablet, my preference is a normal style menu, but I guess I’m a bit of a dinosaur. 🙂

More main course choices

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya I had the spaghetti & meatballs.

Spaghetti & meatballs

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya Enjoyable without being exceptional.

Beer taps are not connected yet.

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya I can’t help wondering why they opened before the craft beer was available.

Another dining area

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

Lots of places to sit at Malibrew Craft Beer A-One Pattaya.

Here is the entertainment area

Craft Beer A-One Pattaya

I have already admitted to being a dinosaur so please view my comments accordingly. I was 2/3 through my meal at 7.30 & the music started. A guitarist & a drummer decided to pound out around 100 decibels. It was so loud I didn’t finish my meal, I just paid my bill & left.

Many thanks for visiting my Craft Beer A-One Pattaya photo blog.

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya is located in the arcade off 2nd road opposite Mike shopping mall. In the same arcade you will find Patrick’s & the Beefeater.

A table or a booth sir?

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

Plenty of space between the tables. 🙂

Walking Street

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

This is dated 1960, however it should show 1980, the reason is I actually took the photo on my first visit to Pattaya.

The original photo

That’s my friend Rob Symonds walking towards the camera. We have visited Manila & Hong Kong on the way to Thailand. Follow THIS LINK for more 1980 photos.

July promotion was exceptional value.

Longhorn Steakhouse PattayaB595 or $19 USD.

Lobster Bisque to begin

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

It tasted as good as it looks. 🙂

Australian Ribeye

Steakhouse Pattaya

At Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya this Australian Ribeye was extremely tender & tasty.

Guess who was celebrating his birthday?

Longhorn Steakhouse PattayaGuilty as charged. 🙂

Creme Brulee is a favourite of mine.

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya

It was a toss up between this & the Tiramisu. Creme Brulee is a dessert consisting of a rich custard base topped with a texturally contrasting layer of hardened caramelized sugar. It is normally served slightly chilled; the heat from the caramelizing process tends to warm the top of the custard, while leaving the center cool. The custard base is traditionally flavored with vanilla in French cuisine or with cinnamon and lemon in Catalan cuisine, but can have other flavorings. It is sometimes garnished with fruit.

Toast Skagen, one of my all time favorites.

Longhorn Steakhouse

The Beefeater also offers Skagen. Toast Skagen is an appetizer and Swedish food. Consisting of two slices of toast, mayonnaise and many prawns. Sometimes crabs are used instead of shrimp. The name of the dish originated from Skagen in Denmark, but the dish is not very well-known and most popular in Sweden, which was created by the restaurant and chef from Stockholm Tore Wretman. He introduced the Toast Skagen … Wikipedia

Australian Shiraz

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya Tonight I chose to take my own wine as it was a special occasion, the corkage fee is B300, or $9 USD.

Tiramisu

Longhorn Steakhouse Pattaya Very rich, I prefer the Creme Brulee.

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya

March 21, 2020 by David Herd

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya is ranked by TripAdvisor number 40 of 1340 restaurants in Pattaya. Every Sunday they have a Mexican “all you can eat” buffet. Another excellent feature here is they offer 3 sizes of the steak of your choice.

My friend Larry Krausz

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya Larry loved his food & really enjoyed visiting the Beefeater, sadly he suffered a major stroke & passed away in 2017.

Toast Skagen

Beefeater Steak House Pattaya Here is the dish I always have at the Beefeater, the owner/chey is Scandinavian so I guess that’s why Skagen is on the menu.

Toast Skagen – Shrimps in dill mayonnaise served on toast

Ham & salad baguette

Beefeater Steak House PattayaThe Beefeater Steak House Pattaya offers so much more than just steak, the baguette is excellent as is the Lobster bisque.

Talking about the Lobster Bisque

Beefeater Steak House PattayaVery rich as you can imagine.

Prices seem to be creeping up

Beefeater Steak House PattayaIt’s now 2021 in the middle of the Covid crisis & most venues seem to be lowering prices or offering specials, however not here I’m afraid.

For anyone with a sweet tooth. 🙂
