Bangkok vaccination center

July 14, 2021 by David Herd

Bangkok vaccination center

Bangkok vaccination center

Bangkok vaccination center located at Bang Sue railway station on the northern side of the city. Three brave Aussie geriatrics hired a taxi & headed north from Pattaya to face what the press was calling total chaos.

Bang Sue Grand Station, which began construction in 2013, is equipped with 24 tracks and is capable of accommodating up to 40 trains at the same time. Sitting very close to the Sirat Expressway, Bang Sue Grand Station covers an enormous 1,280 acres, positioning it to become the largest railway station in all of Southeast Asia.

Surprise surprise

Bangkok vaccination centerWhere is the so called chaos? We were surprised & happy to find a well organised facility with friendly staff on standby to assist everybody. The patients were 98% Thai with the majority quite elderly & wheelcair bound.

This was not a surprise as foreigners,or Farangs as they are known had to be aged over 75 to qualify for the free vaccination. AstraZeneca was their weapon of choice.

The whole process was simple

Bangkok vaccination center

The most time was taken by the blood pressure testing, for some unknown reason we all tested high time & time again. Daryl was the biggest problem with a reading just under 200, initally I was 170 but after a couple of extra checks & waiting 20 minutes in between I came in around 130.

I’m next in line

Bangkok vaccination center

I can’t help repeating how friendly & helpful all the staff were, they helped make the whole process stress free. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bangkok vaccination center, my turn for the needle ๐Ÿ™‚

I hardly felt a thing, who’s a brave boy then? ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

The happy geriatrics

Bangkok vaccination centerAfter the injection you have to wait for 30 minutes to ensure there is no adverse reaction to the vaccine. Glad to say we were all fine & feeling no effects whatsoever. On the left is Ron Sievers who was accompanied by his Thai girlfriend, she was a great help in making sure we had a trouble free experience.

Meet Sirisak

Bangkok vaccination centerA very good driver with a nice large SUV, took us there, waited 2.5 hours & back to Pattaya for B2000 + tolls.

Health authorities on Wednesday said 87 more Covid-19 fatalities and 9,317 new transmissions around Thailand occurred on Tuesday, bringing the accumulated toll to 2,934 deaths and the number of cases since the start of the pandemic to 363,029.

Living with Covid-19

Living with Covid-19

Living with Covid-19

Living with Covid-19 in the first six months of 2021 makes me feel like I am just treading water. It many ways life is good, it’s very peaceful in Pattaya without tourists. The downside is not being able to travel & having friends & family who can’t visit me in Thailand.

In fact for the last year or so it feels like I have just been treading water.

A surprise addition to Pattaya

Living with Covid-19

This monster is parked adjacent to Soi 6, plans are to turn it into a tourist food destination. Progress has stopped due to Covid.

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

January 6, 2021 by David Herd

Coronavirus devastates business

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya businesses & almost closes down the island of Koh Samui. This post will focus on some of the venues in Pattaya who have closed their doors permanently. The photo above shows a coffee shop at the Bay on Beach Rd, this was one of the first to shut down.

The Coffee Club

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

Located at Markland where I live on the corner of Beach Rd & Soi 1.

A very familiar image on Beach Rd.

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

That sexy girl has been smiling at us for 42 years. My first trip to Pattaya was 40 years ago in 1980, to see photos just follow THIS LINK.

It seems I was taken in by fake news, this venue has in fact reopened. ๐Ÿ™‚

A very sad story  indeed.

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

The Tahitian Queen (known affectionately as the TQ), Pattayaโ€™s original A-go-go bar and Pattayaโ€™s longest running establishment, has shuttered for the last time after 42 years. With over 100 employees, the objective for the last ten months has been to keep them with enough salary that they could subsist until the Covid nightmare is over.

It was a very sad night on Tuesday the 29th December 2020 as the staff arrived to collect their last paycheck. There were many tears and hugs as the doors were locked for the last time and the staff wandered off to uncertain futures.

Starbucks corner Beach Rd & Soi 13/1.

One block away you will see in the photo below Pizza Hut has closed as well.

King Seafood in Walking Street

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

One of the larges seafood restaurants on Walking St. Here is the heartfelt announcement from the owner.

“Dear all beloved customers.

Announcement; Shop closes until the situation improves.

We give up. We can’t fight anymore.

Seriously, since I was back open last August, we have been carrying a loss all the time. But during that time, we have hope that things will be better. Finally, it’s not what we hoped for.

This time, we are sold out. Physical and mental support.

Secondly, this round of crime comes from the corruption of government officials. Whether it’s multinational labor case or casual case, the state throws responsibility and burden to the private sector. Order closes before New Year’s Eve. Damages us. Customers cancel all bookings if there is any. New Year’s event as usual. We would have the encouragement and capital to fight. But at this time, it leaves us with no choice but to close the shop.

They claimed to be Pattaya’s oldest German restaurant, located on the corner of Beach Rd & Soi 4. Another regular lunch venue for me, I used to really enjoy their Polish Sausage with Potato Salad.

Itโ€™s a sad day, first time Iโ€™ve ever had to do this but as you know we have closed the bar today, hopefully only for a short period but with the situation as it who knows, so if possible Iโ€™d like to try and line up my staff for a job if anyone has any positions available, Iโ€™ll vouch for them all.

One thousand meals

Covid-19 devastates Pattaya

A group of Chinese businessmen, who preferred to stay anonymous, handed out just over a thousand meals to the needy in Pattaya on Wednesday evening January 20th.

The donation event took place near Third Road and was also attended by Pattaya City Police who ensured that social distancing and other Covid-19 related measures took place.

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya

March 10, 2020 by David Herd

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya which has resulted in a 44% drop in tourists in February 2020. Many Thai people find themselves without work so they have left Pattaya to return to their villages in the country. As you can see the beach is deserted at 8am on March 3rd 2020, only a few short months ago it was teeming with Chinese tourists.

This is how it was…

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya Seven days a week thousands of Chinese tourists would storm the beach to clamber aboard the boats to para-sail & visit Koh Larn island.

Typical over powered tourist boat

Coronavirus impacts PattayaOnly about 25% of the boats remain on Pattaya Beach, the rest are in moth balls. ๐Ÿ™‚

Patrick is feeling lonely

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya Well known restaurateur Patrick Van Den Berghe finds himself alone on the beach, time for him to go back to his steakhouse & order some French oysters & lamb shanks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pattaya Beach never looked so good

Coronavirus impacts PattayaOf course my opinion is purely a selfish one, however there really is nothing to like about thousands of Chinese tourists inhabiting the beach. ๐Ÿ™‚

“There is high chance that the country will be in a technical recession — contraction of the economy for two consecutive quarters,” said Anusorn Tamajai, director of Economic and Business Research Centre at Rangsit University.

The masked man cometh

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya I actually tried a mask, I hated it & lasted 1 hour, in fact it was because of pollution not the virus.

Pattaya pollution

Coronavirus impacts PattayaThis was January 10 2020.

This was a typical Pattaya morning

Coronavirus impacts PattayaHundreds of buses would clog up beach road from 8 am seven days a week.

Waiting to pick up the tourists around mid day.

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya It’s fantastic now without these monsters taking over Beach Road.

Nothing like a peaceful Pattaya morning

Coronavirus impacts PattayaWell folks enjoy it while you can because at some stage in the future the dreaded Chinese tourists will return. ๐Ÿ™‚

Desperate times in Pattaya

Coronavirus impacts Pattaya People queue in jomtien for a free meal outside Yupins. Twice a day. The queue goes past The Venue, past The Spring Onion, down the road, round the corner and today reached Dicks Cafe. 75% of working age people have lost their jobs in Pattaya. No savings, & no chance of getting any money over the next few months. Can’t pay their rent & 3000 are homeless. They can’t sleep on the beach without getting arrested. Can’t sleep in the parks (closed) and can’t sleep on the street (strict curfew after 10pm). Desperate, desperate times here for these poor people.

Here are the numbers as of March 10 2020

Coronavirus impacts PattayaThailand doesn’t feature in the high risk area.

Lets put it in perspective

Coronavirus impacts PattayaOne hell of a difference don’t you agree?
