Up a lazy river

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry

Chao Phraya river ferry which takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.In the photo above you have The Peninsula Hotel on the left and the Shangri-La Hotel on the right.

 Bankok’s famous Long-tail boat

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry

The long-tail boat, known as Ruea Hang Yao is a type of watercraft native to Southeast Asia, which uses a common automotive engine as a readily available and maintainable power-plant. A craft designed to carry passengers on a river may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters, and a canopy. There is much variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look. The sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

Cold beer in Chinatown

Chao Phraya river ferry

The Bangkok river ferry got me to Chinatown along the mighty Chao Phraya river which is known as the River of Kings. It is the life blood of Bangkok, around 50,000 people use its ferries each day. Slow barges bearing cargo coast upstream, kids still frolic in the brown water. Wooden shacks, mottled by the elements, still hang over the water. Check out my photo blog here.

Soaring hotels and condominiums hem in solemn temples, churches and civic buildings that look 19th century European, while close by the odd wooden sampan sells noodle soup or dried squid to hungry river workers. It is this juxtaposition of calm and chaotic, modern and traditional, religious and secular, ugly and sublime, foreign and indigenous that makes the Chao Phraya so evocative. My thanks to Bangkok.com for their wonderful description of the River of Kings.

Not everybody is happy on the river

A Vietnamese cargo ship ploughed into riverside houses along the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng district yesterday April 5t 2017, damaging three homes.

Residents fled to the streets in panic as the cargo ship loomed over them. Three houses were damaged, one badly, but nobody was injured.

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

December 25, 2015 by David Herd

Welcome to Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing is a hive of activity as you would expect, narrow lanes with thousands of people hunting for bargains.

Thien Fah Foundation

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

The Tien Fa foundation was formed in 1902, making it the oldest charitable society in Bangkok. The foundation provides free medical care to the indigent. The buildings surrounding the shrine actually house the hospital facilities.

The foundation is on Yaowarat Road just a short distance from the Chinatown gate in the circle.

  Very busy street Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

The Chinese community in Bangkok pre-dates the founding of the Thai capital in the city. Indeed, the land where the grand palace is today was originally a community of Chinese traders. When King Rama I decided to establish the capital on the site of the village of Bangkok, he asked the traders to move. They settled to the east of the new city, along the river. It may be hard to believe today, but the narrow Sampaeng Lane, which isn’t even big enough for a car, was once the Chinatown Bangkok main street.

Typical side-walk shop

The best way to see the area is to pick a starting point and wander around.

Very handy transport, however usually the drivers try to badger you into visiting a gem store etc so they can receive a kickback. Taxis are a far better option, cheaper and air conditioned.

Lots of toy shops in Chinatown

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Absolutely amazing

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok offers a breathtaking view of this wonderful city. Perched on the 56th floor at Centara Grand Hotel on top of Central World shopping Mall.

Bistro and bar

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

A huge wines selection at the bistro which occupies the entire 55th floor, both indoor and outdoor dining sections to choose from, and the solely outdoor bar deck of the 56th floor wraps around the circular core of the building providing an uninterrupted 360 degree panorama of the amazing Bangkok metropolis.

Happy hour is 5 to 7 pm

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Buy one get one free is a good deal as the price as you would expect at such a venue is rather high. A Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 so getting 2 for 1 is a good deal.

After happy hour finishes

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Well that’s another story, some friends turned up and Lisa from Townsville was drinking champagne which turned out to be B1,100 per glass, which equals $42 AUD or $30 USD. Now that’s not really a problem but her and her friend John left without paying, subsequently Greg, the little guy in the middle got stuck with a huge drink bill. 🙂

Enough of that, back to the amazing view.

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

The Baiyoke tower is 85 stories and is the tallest building in Bangkok, it includes the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh-tallest all-hotel structure in the world.

Game changer

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

MahaNakhon is a luxury mixed-use skyscraper currently under construction in the Silom/Sathon central business area of Bangkok. Designed to fit into the Thai landscape with a unique pixelated facade, it will have the unconventional appearance of a glass curtain walled square tower with a cuboid-surfaced spiral cut into the side of the building. Upon its estimated completion in 2015, it will become the tallest building in Bangkok at 314 metres (1,030 ft), with 77 floors. Featuring hotel, retail and residences, 200 units of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok inside the building are priced between around US$1,100,000 to US$17,000,000, making it one of the most expensive condominiums in Bangkok. Thailand horrific road carnage

November 16, 2015 by David Herd

He actually survived

Thailand horrific road carnage, Update May 7th 2020 at end of blog.

Thailand horrific road carnage

Thailand horrific road carnage is a frightening statistic, in 2015 they were rated the 2nd worst country in the world, only war torn Libya had a worse record. The taxi driver in this photo must be the luckiest guy in the world, sitting quietly in traffic then a truck roars up and squashes his vehicle under the bus.

2nd deadliest in the world

Thailand horrific road carnage

There is no doubt Thais are terrible drivers, add to the mix their habit of driving intoxicated it is no wonder they have earned this terrible statistic.

Rammed from behind

Thailand horrific road carnage

Sadly two woman and a 2 year old child died when their taxi was rammed from behind by a speeding truck.

How to mess up your Ferrari

Thailand horrific road carnage

During the four years I have held a Thai drivers licence I have never got behind the wheel of a car, I prefer to hire a driver and always sit in the back seat to increase my chance of survival.

47 poles brought down

Thailand horrific road carnage

Sadly they are serious Daffy.

Thailand horrific road carnage

Thailand horrific road carnage

Surely you can’t be serious? On August 1st a 22-wheel tractor-trailer struck a power pole in Bang Phli district, setting off a chain reaction that brought down 46 other poles, damaging 37 passing vehicles.

Part of the reason

Thailand horrific road carnage

Virtually every day you see an overloaded vehicle with workers or children jammed together without seatbelts, what could possibly go wrong you may well ask?

From the Bangkok Post October 20 2015

The lack of standards is particularly noticeable in Thailand, which lacks a child-restraint law, performs no safety audits for new road-construction projects, carries out no regular inspections of road…

Thailand road carnage

Thailand horrific road carnage

I am still astounded how the taxi driver escaped with minor injuries.

Shocking accident claims 8 lives

Thailand horrific road carnage

A Nissan Navara pickup which was reportedly carrying five men and one woman lost control as it travelled along the Ratana Wapi-Pak Khad Road in Nong Phai at around 1.40am.
A Suzuki Carry truck which was also travelling along the same stretch of road is thought not to have seen the Nissan Navara and crashed into the wreckage at high speed, killing the two men inside. The five men, who were electricians and all from the same village, and the woman had just left a nearby karaoke bar.
The stretch of road where the accident happened is currently being expanded and because of this there were no road lights working at the time of the accident.

Sadly 4 killed and 8 injured

Thailand horrific road carnage

Four people were killed and six others injured when their van struck a roadside tree and burst into flames in Prachin Buri on Monday afternoon April 11 2016. Credit to Bangkok Post.

Bangkok Post February 29 2016.

Thailand horrific road carnage

Does this story define irony? Thailand is the 2nd worst country in the world after Libya for road deaths, yet here they are complaining about Chinese drivers. I’m certainly not defending the crazy Chinese drivers but Thailand really should start working on their shocking road toll.

Is this the worst you have seen?

Thailand horrific road carnage

January 2nd 2016 25 people perished in one of the worst road accidents you will ever see.

Most were burnt to death

 Thailand horrific road carnage

The driver of the van involved in a horrific crash in Chon Buri which left 25 dead on Monday was likely to have dozed off behind the wheel as he had made five round trips within 31 hours, according to officials.

The van, which was heading from Chanthaburi to Bangkok, a distance of 250km, when it swerved out of its lane and crashed into a pickup truck travelling in the opposite direction on the highway in Chon Buri’s Ban Bung district. From Bangkok Post.

Seven dangerous days 2016/17

 Thailand horrific road carnage

Between Dec 29 and Jan 4, 380 deaths were recorded with 3,505 people injured. The fatality rate marked an 11.4% increase over last year. Thailand’s “seven dangerous days” have come to a close with 11% more people killed than last year, almost 3,800 accidents and nearly 4,700 vehicles impounded.

Please explain this to me .

  Thailand horrific road carnage

You are driving a school bus in light rain & slippery conditions, so you decide to overtake another vehicle with a semi trailer coming at you from the opposite direction. You die & 12 kids are injured, could have been so much worse. Once again in Thailand the vehicle is not at fault it’s the damn drivers.

January 2018

Thailand horrific road carnageThailand horrific road carnage continues, here are some figures that will shock you;

1,452 road deaths in Jan. 2018

ROAD death toll remains alarmingly high with unofficial figures collected by the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation showing that 1,452 people died at the site of the accident in just the first month of this year, INN News reported today (Feb. 2. 2018).

Not included in the figure are does who die later in hospital.

The foundation’s secretary-general Dr Thaejing Siripanic also revealed last year’s statistics as follows:

January 2017:  947 road deaths, or an average of 30 a day;

February 2017: 850 road deaths, or average 30 a day;

March 2017:  1,281 road deaths, or an average 41 a day

April 2017: 1,382 road deaths;

May 2017: 1,124 road deaths;

June 2017:  1,128 road deaths.

The total for the first half of 2017 reached 6,712 road fatalities which is an increase from 5,308 recorded in the same period of 2016.

The situation did not improve in the second half of 2017 because today there are people dying on the road all 365 days.

Statistics available for the second of 2017 are as follows:

July 2017: 1,021 road deaths:

September 2017:  1,110 road deaths;

October 2017: 1,161 road deaths;

November 2017: 1,301 road deaths;

December 2017: 1,327 road deaths.

Feburary 2018, this will really shock you!

By some miracle the poor girl survived.

Miracle escape

Thailand horrific road carnageA 22 wheel truck trailer had a tire blowout and the driver seeking to avoid other vehicles at the red light swerved and overturned.  The Mercedes driver was unconscious with a broken left leg. His wife accompanying him suffered only superficial injuries.

Update May 7th 2020

Thailand horrific road carnageThe national alcohol ban was lifted in all 76 of Thailand’s provinces, plus Bangkok, last Sunday. The sale and transport of alcohol was banned as part of the national state of emergency in order to stop people drinking and socialising during the Covid-19 crisis.

Now, after about three weeks, the ban has been lifted. Unsurprisingly, there has been a massive jump in the number of road deaths, rising yesterday to 63, 8 more people than the total number of people that have died from the coronavirus since the outbreak started in Thailand in late January.

Thailand’s roads are notoriously dangerous and are among the deadliest in the world, ranked 9th by the World Health Organisation with an average of 22,000 deaths per year and over 1 million people injured. In 2019, the majority of traffic-related deaths and injuries were motorcyclists, who accounted for 92% of fatal crashes. Specifically, younger male motorcyclists who were driving whilst under the influence of alcohol.

Check out my photo blog for some iconic buildings along the river.

Bangkok City Building Boom State Tower

Bangkok City Enjoying Building Boom

Built in 2001, it is the largest building in South-east Asia, on the roof is Sirocco, one of the best roof top bars in the world. I often stay close by at Centre Point hotel, in fact I took this photo from my hotel window. Use this link for an excellent room rate. However if you prefer to stay in this magnificent tower book into the upmarket Lebua hotel through this link.

Baiyoke Tower

The Baiyoke tower is 85 stories and is the tallest building in Bangkok, it includes the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh-tallest all-hotel structure in the world.

Game changer

 Bangkok City Enjoying Building Boom

JW Marriott hotel Bangkok is at Soi 2 Sukhumvit, a short walk to both Ploenchit & Nana station. It’s a luxury five star hotel with some wonderful restaurants. My friend Tony Murphy and I enjoy a very good breakfast in the Bangkok Baking Company. There is another Marriott worth visiting in Soi 57 Sukhumvit, have a cocktail at the wonderful roof bar 48 floors above the ground.

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall

EmQuartier

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall Bangkok opened in March 2015 & I’m blown away by the amazing food hall at this new shopping mall opposite the Emporium. I never thought I would say it but Bangkok now rivals Tokyo with the highest quality food presentation in the world.

Everything I saw was simply top quality.

There are dozens of restaurants, offices, event halls and a nice atrium garden featuring a waterfall. There’s direct access from Phrom Phong BTS Skytrain and walkway to the original Emporium mall across the road.

Wine I love you

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall

What a great name for a restaurant, as well as the indoor area there is a terrace that overlooks downtown Bangkok,  they offer Asian and Western choices for appetizers & mains, catering to a variety of tastes, all at very affordable prices.

I wanted to order the lamb shank but they were sold out, when I remarked “but it’s only 12.15,” the waitress informed me they only get 4 shanks each day and we have been opened since 10 am. When I think about it it probably ensures they always have fresh produce to serve.

Oysters at Crab and Claw, 7th Floor Helix Building.

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall

Lobsters, New England Clam Chowder and a good selection of oysters (Kumamoto, Calm Cove, Royal, etc…) and fresh home-made pasta.  Lots of choices at this popular establishment. The lobster roll is Crab & Claw’s signature dish, however it will set you back around B1000.

They have recently opened at Siam Paragon as well.

Entrée at Crab and Claw

Amazing EmQuartier shopping mall

An interesting dish featuring a crab with little black hamburger rolls and a crab filling. Although it was a little light on the crab, tasty but I would not order again. A very good selection of (expensive) Oysters from all over the world, average price between B500 & B600 for 3.

For a very good budget hotel in Soi 11 Sukhumvit you can’t beat Citadines.

If you want to go upmarket try the Marriot on Sukhumvit, great rate using this link.

Three Fabulous Thailand trips 2003

April 29, 2015 by David Herd

Atlantic Bar Pattaya

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Three Fabulous Thailand trips 2003, in fact the whole year was frantic, not sure how I survived, it was one of the busiest & best years for travel that I have ever experienced. I went to Vietnam twice in January & April, Thailand in April & July, then around the world in November starting in Chile, then on to Rio De Janeiro in Brazil, Barcelona & Bangkok on the way home to Australia.

Low tide at Pattaya beach

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

The skyline has changed a lot since 2003, now in 2015 there is a building boom in condominiums and hotels.

Golf at Phoenix with John and Andy

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Andy got tied up with a Thai girl who relieved him of his one million GBP inheritance.

Surrounded by caddies at Phoenix.

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Now this is the way to play golf. 🙂

Marta was a pole dancer from Prague

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Marta was quite a wild Russian girl, I chatted to her on Walking St and invited her to join us at Cosy Beach. We had a great day culminating in an even better night. 🙂

The rear view

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Here is Marta again at my hotel, the Sunshine Vista in Soi 3. There are more photos in the slide show at the end, I can’t show them in this part of the post as Photobucket censor any bare boobs. 🙂

John Martin aka Pothole at the Sunshine Vista

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Certainly one of the craziest people I know. He moved to Pattaya a year or two after this, grabbed a girl off the pole and produced two children with her.

John Sinclair, Sinclair Waters (RIP) and Bob Dark.

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Sinclair is famous for adding people to his “black list”, after a couple years of being in favor in 2016 he put me back on it. 🙂

At the Lobster Pot in Walking Street, there are many seafood restaurants where you overlook the bay.

Lunch at Fuji

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Here is a typical Thai story, I invited Ja in the yellow to lunch, she worked in the phone section of Big C. However unbeknownst to me she then invited 4 of her friends to come and enjoy a free lunch at my expense. 🙂 This is quite normal in Thailand and it’s not the first, and won’t be the last time I have been caught.

Chinatown Bangkok

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Always lots to see in Chinatown.

Chinatown Bangkok

Three Fabulous Thailand trips

Chinatown is a “must see” part of Bangkok, another good look into the past is “Jim Thompson” house. I also love taking a cruise on a long tail boat along the mighty Chao Phraya river. Make sure to stop off at Wat Arun, “The Temple of Dawn”.

Here is an amazing sight in Chinatown.

Here is a coincidence for you, I published this post two days ago on April 30 2015, then last night on May 1st I ran into Nok who is back working at the Atlantic. Her theme song should really be “All my life’s a circle”.:)

Bangkok floating market

February 6, 2015 by David Herd

One of the most popular attractions.

Bangkok floating market

Bangkok floating market

Bangkok floating market is a little over two hour west of the city, a short taxi ride then a long-tail boat will take to the fascinating market.

Long-tail boat

Bangkok floating market

The long-tail boat is designed to carry passengers on a river & may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters long, and a canopy. There is a great variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look, the sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

Crowded and chaotic

Bangkok floating market

This is really a great day out, put it on your bucket list.

Food, food and more food

Bangkok floating market

Bangkok floating market is certainly about Food, food and more food, everywhere someone is either eating or selling food.

Actually it’s not just food

Bangkok floating market

Plenty of stock to sell here.

Clothes & hats a well

Bangkok floating market

This is probably my 3rd visit to the Bangkok Floating Market and I’m sure there will be a 4th.

This is my 3rd visit to the floating market and is always enjoyable.

The Bangkok floating market is certainly a “must see” when you visit Bangkok. Other interesting tours are of course the Grand Palace and Wat Arun.

Bangkok canal cruise longtail boat

January 7, 2015 by David Herd

Bangkok canal cruise

Bangkok canal cruise

Bangkok canal cruise in a long-tail boat, which is known as Ruea Hang Yao, a type of watercraft native to Southeast Asia, which uses a common automotive engine as a readily available and maintainable power-plant.

As you can see many of the waterfront homes resemble shanty towns, unlike other parts of the world including the Gold Coast in Australia and Fort Lauderdale north of Miami, where any home on the waterfront is usually an expensive mansion.

No luxury here

In real estate terms this is what we call the poverty pack.

The craft is designed to carry passengers on a river & may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters long, and a canopy. There is a great variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look, the sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

What a huge engine

And bloody noisy as you can imagine.

Waiting in the lock for the water to rise.

Until recently, the canals of Bangkok accommodated many social, cultural, and commercial activities, functioning as important public places for residents of Thailand’s capital city. Dating from the founding of the city in 1782, the canals in Bangkok are of cultural importance to the Thai people, having originated as a means of providing security against attack, as a source of sustenance (food and water), as the focus of religious ceremonies and celebrations such as the Loy Kratong Festival, and as a site for recreational activities such as swimming and boating activities and competitions.

Luxury waterfront home, I don’t think so.

Faced with the combined threats of land subsidence and rising temperatures and sea levels, the World Bank has predicted that Bangkok’s flood risk will increase four-fold from now by 2050. Bangkok is among the top 10 cities in the world facing the biggest potential impact from coastal flooding by 2070. The Thai capital, built on swampland, is slowly sinking and the floods currently besieging Bangkok could be merely a foretaste of a grim future as climate change makes its impact felt, experts say.

She does not instill confidence

The river and canals are very busy with water craft buzzing past at a rapid rate, on this day out driver was not at all concerned, but I can assure you we were. 🙂   Not everything goes to plan when you take a Bangkok canal cruise, here is a story from a Thai lady who works for the Bangkok Post.  So my advice is if an operator seems angry of unfriendly simply try another one until you are comfortable with your choice.
