Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

June 24, 2015 by David Herd

Our journey starts here

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry is one of the most famous trips in this great city. I remember a slogan from when I was a child, “7 miles from Sydney & 1000 miles from care”.  This was the slogan used by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940 to describe Manly “Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort”.

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

The best way to travel to Manly is take a ferry from Circular Quay which will give you a view of the world’s best harbour.

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

The Quay apartment tower is one of the most expensive in Australia, what an incredible location and view.

Changi Golf club Singapore

June 7, 2015 by David Herd

Changi Golf club Singapore

Changi Golf club Singapore

Changi Golf club Singapore is like an oasis and a welcome change from the hustle and bustle of this busy city. Located just beside Changi airport. This was 2008, when I was here last year we played at Legends in Malaysia.

Duncan Paul slams one up the middle

Here is an Aussie Duncan Paul teeing off, he now lives in Hong Kong.

Old friend Steve Bates at Changi Golf Club

Changi Golf club Singapore

The construction of the military base at Changi commenced in 1926 and was occupied by the British Army and Commonwealth forces up to the surrender in WWII. When peace was declared in 1945 the British Army went back into the Changi site and stayed there until 1946 when the administration and running of the base was handed over to the Royal Air Force. The RAF Changi personnel decided to create a golf section and they laid out a few holes on the sports field without any bunkers.  It was not until 1949 that the golf course was ready for play. Changi is a reminder of Singapore’s historical connection with WWII, as the course winds through an area filled with mementos of the British presence like the soldier’s barracks, officer’s quarters, gun-emplacements and air-raid bunkers.

The view from Changi Golf Club

Nice course Changi Golf club Singapore

When the RAF left Singapore in 1971, the club was privatized and civilian members were taken in to form the pioneer group of Changi Golf Club. Since then the golf course and the clubhouse have been regularly upgraded.

Legends Golf Club Malaysia is a 90 minute drive from Singapore. In 2007 my friends and I (all legends) decided it was time to tame this course.

This is more our speed

As you can imagine it is far too hot to walk the course.

Legends Golf Club Malaysia

Legends Golf Club Malaysia

Designed by Jack Nicklaus, The Legends is one of the toughest tests of golf in South-East Asia. Legends can be best described as dramatic and can always be found in excellent condition.

The original concept of this resort included three championship courses: one designed by Jack Nicklaus, one by Arnold Palmer, and one by Gary Player. Only the Nicklaus course and nine holes of the Palmer course have been finished, though. The Gary Player course remains in the planning phase.

The par-72, 18-hole Jack Nicklaus course opened to golfers in 1997. This 6,710-metre (7,338-yard) course features views of the neighboring palm oil plantation. Don’t be surprised if monkeys stop to check out your game on the back nine too.

Legends Golf Club Malaysia is a beautiful course, if you are a golfer put it on your bucket list.

We almost had the course to ourselves

Where else would you rather be?

With two hole to go the storm came in and blew us off the course as so often happens in South East Asia.

Bristol South West England

Bristol South West England

Bristol South West England was fairly close to where I was staying in Beckington with my friend Bill Austin. We paid a visit to some of his work colleagues who had contracts to install security camera for Trowbridge council.

All throughout England the camera surveillance is everywhere. Who can blame them with the shocking acts of terrorism they have experienced over the years.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

Bristol South West England

The bridge is a distinctive landmark, used as a symbol of Bristol on postcards, promotional materials, and informational web sites. It was also used as a backdrop to several films and television advertising and programmes.

It’s a very long way down to the Avon river.

To distinguish it from a number of other rivers of the same name, this river is often also known as the Lower Avon or Bristol Avon.

Bristol did not inspire me, I doubt very that I would ever visit again. I think there are far more interesting cities in this part of the country. I’m probably being a little unfair as I didn’t have enough time to explore other parts of the city and surrounding area.

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure 2006

April 16, 2015 by David Herd

Another magic world trip

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure 2006

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure 2006, once again my journey began with a flight from the Gold Coast to Sydney in October 2006,  before arriving in Rio de Janeiro.

I flew to Teresina to meet a friend and her family then continued on to Forteleza and Belem. After Brazil I flew to Italy hired a car and headed for Portofino, San Gimignano, Vinci and Florence.

A friend in Sydney hosted a dinner at his hotel with several friends, great food and 2 very sexy waitresses.

This it not part of my travel blog, just part of my personal photo & travel history from 2006. Mainly revolving around the many people who helped make it another memorable year.

Crayfish? I can’t see any Crayfish. 🙂

Peter plays it cool

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

The following day I missed my Qantas flight to Rio through a mix up with the airline. I had to purchase another ticket, luckily a couple of months later Qantas reimbursed my original ticket.

A terrific night

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

GREAT FOOD, GOOD WINE & HOT BABES, WHAT MORE COULD YOU WANT?

Copacabana Beach Rio de Janeiro, say no more.

These two look like they mean business.

Alan Austin and his wife Renata

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure 2006

Alan & I met in Rio and became very good friends, unfortunately the following year he ran into some problems with the English authorities and I now visit him every year in various English prisons.

Shenanigans Ipanema

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Monday nights here there are lots of specials and the place gets really crowded. The guy in the red shirt is Alan’s Las Vegas friend Jay.

The girl from Copacabana

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

I was relaxing on the beach when this vision appeared in front of me. I have never been one to let a golden opportunity pass so I brushed up on my social skills and introduced myself. Her name was Mel and she came from neighbouring Niteroi. Lo & behold within an hour we were in my apartment making mad passionate love. This certainly was one on the best days of my trip. 🙂

Mel from Niteroi

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Mel is around 6′ tall with amazing green eyes, a total knock out. It is 2015 and I still have her photo on a shelf in my condo. 🙂

John, an Aussie guy who owned “The Office” restaurant.

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

John was an Aussie guy from Sydney and we swapped many stories about people we knew and knew of, mainly well known Sydney gangsters. 🙂   The following year John in fact was abducted by Brazilian gangsters who forced him to go to his home in Angra Dos Rios and pen his safe which they cleaned out.

Cabo Frio

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Here is my friend Renilda, she lives at Cabo Frio near Buzios with her son and lots of pet dogs. We met in 1999 on Copacabana beach and have had a lot of fun together. I have not seen her since I took this photo in 2006 but I hope we meet again one day.

Sueli and Silmarinha Oliveira

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

I actually met Sueli online so on my way to Fortaleza I decided to stop at Teresina to meet her and her lovely family.

Fortaleza on the north Coast

  Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Fortaleza is in the state capital of Ceará, located in Northeastern Brazil. With a population close to 2.3 million (metropolitan region over 3.4 million), Fortaleza is the 5th largest city in Brazil.  Fortaleza is one of the three leading cities in the Northeast region together with Recife and Salvador. The city will be one of the host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, for which Brazil is the host nation.

We rode in a beach buggy  along the beautiful long beaches and wandered through the amazing coloured sands of  Canoa Quebrada.

Belem at the mouth of the mighty Amazon

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure 2006

Such a beautiful face, (of course I mean the girl) these two were dancers on a cruise I took on the Amazon.

The catch of the day

Brazil Italy Thailand Adventure

Belem is at the mouth of the Amazon river which represents more than half the planet’s remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world. Founded in 1616 by the Kingdom of Portugal, Belém was the first European colony on the Amazon but did not become part of Brazil until 1775. The newer part of the city has modern buildings and skyscrapers. The colonial portion retains the charm of tree-filled squares, churches and traditional blue tiles. The city has a rich history and architecture from colonial times. Recently it witnessed a skyscraper boom.

 Beautiful San Gimignano

San Gimignano is famous for its Medieval village architecture, unique in the preservation of about a dozen of its tower houses, which, with its hilltop setting and encircling walls form “an unforgettable skyline”

California Miami Rio Carnival

April 15, 2015 by David Herd

It all started in Sydney

California Miami Rio Carnival

California Miami Rio Carnival Paris Bangkok

California Miami Rio Carnival Paris Bangkok, it all started in Sydney in January 2005. Next stop was San Francisco, on to Miami before flying down to Rio de Janeiro. Make no mistake Rio Carnival is the greatest show on Earth. I then met my friend Simone in Natal in North East Brazil, we travelled 300 kms by taxi to Recife stopping at Praia da Pippa for a few days on the way.

I said au revoir to Brazil where it was 35 degrees and flew to Paris to be greeted by a temperature of 3 degrees,

California Miami Rio Carnival

The Architectural District (also known as Old Miami Beach Historic District, and the more popular term, Miami Art Deco District) is a U.S. historic district (designated as such on May 14, 1979) located in the South Beach neighbourhood of Miami Beach, Florida. The district is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Sixth Street to the south, Alton Road to the west, the Collins Canal and Dade Boulevard to the north. It contains 960 historic buildings. In 1989, it was listed in A Guide to Florida’s Historic Architecture, published by the University of Florida Press.

South Beach Miami

California Miami Rio Carnival

The fabulous art deco towers are unique examples of this form of architecture, they along the eight and a half mile stretch of  Beach. All told there are twenty five towers guarding those who use the beach. At once functional and decorative, they contribute beautifully to the overall aesthetic of this Floridian resort city. A great example of Art Deco South Beach Miami.

Welcome to Rio David

California Miami Rio Carnival We have been waiting for you all year, where have you been. 🙂 The beautiful on the left is Samantha, her blonde girlfriend was around 6′ tall.

The Sambadrome

California Miami Rio Carnival

The Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí is centre stage of Rio Carnival, the host venue of the annual parade of Samba Schools. It is important to note that Rio Carnival, popularized around the world as the greatest party on the planet,is about much more than drinking and partying. At its heart, Carnival is an exhilarating combination of competition and camaraderie as organizations called Samba Schools battle for the title of Rio Carnival Samba Parade Champions. For Cariocas, the local residents of Rio de Janeiro, is a time to show the world the product of a year’s worth of hard work and dedication. All the magic ofRio Carnival — the beats, songs, dances, floats and costumes — are the product of well-orchestrated machines called Samba Schools.

Meanwhile out on the street

The whole city goes crazy for Carnival, this was my 2nd experience, I returned in 2008 for my 3rd Carnival.

 Dave Sommer RIP

California Miami Rio Carnival Paris BangkokTwo of my friends from 2005 are not with us anymore,  Dave Sommer  lived & worked in Sao Paulo,  Sadly he was brutally murdered on January 11 2015. I remember the great day we spent together visiting the Samba school with his girlfriend, they were both preparing to participate in the parade.

Doug Roarke also passed away

California Miami Rio CarnivalDoug Roarke was a lovely guy who lived life to the max, after battling a long illness he passed away around 2007. Danielle was his gorgeous long time girlfriend in Rio. I remember sitting in a bar in Rio Di Janeiro with Dave Wylie & Doug Roarke, (RIP) and when I asked what was their favourite place in Brazil, Doug briefly considered the question before saying “Praia de Pipa”. Until that moment I had never heard of the place, but on Doug’s recommendation I planned my trip. Pipa Beach quickly became one of my favourite places in the world.

California Miami Rio Carnival Porto de Galinhas

California Miami Rio Carnival Paris BangkokThe origin of the name is well known. Porto de Galinhas means “Port of Chickens” in Portuguese. In the second half of the 19th century, the Brazilian government imposed restrictions to the commerce of slaves, which were widely used as manpower in the sugarcane farms around Recife to circumvent the prohibition, the “black ships” (which transported slaves from Africa to Brazil) looked for other places to harbor, far from Recife. One such place was in the bays around Suape and Ipojuca, about 60 km to the South ofRecife. When a ship arrived in town, as it was prohibited to mention slavery, the word spread as “there are new chickens in the port”; hence, the place gained its name Porto de Galinhas.

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

April 4, 2015 by David Herd

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Tropical storm floods Pattaya, when it rains it really pours down. I love to see the storm clouds roaring across Pattaya bay from my condo. You can can also watch from anywhere in the world on my webcam.

Here it comes

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

John Fogerty has a question….

I really love watching the black clouds roll in over the bay.

Is this a road or a river?

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Looks more like a river to me. 🙂

Oh oh! This does not look good.

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

The roads flood so quickly as the drains just can’t handle the incredible volume of water. Often these storms only last for 30 or 40 minutes however that’s enough time to cause havoc.

LadyBoy in distress.

This LadyBoy looks a little concerned.

Houston, we have a problem

The result

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

The beach gets smashed time and time again throughout the year this is the result.

Gutters can’t handle the volume

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

I don’t think there is any drainage system that can handle the sheer volume of storm water.

Repairs are needed

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Sadly this in an all too familiar sight on Pattaya beach.

Soggy footpath

The aftermath of the storm.

Crazy idea

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Here are 3 pumps to take the water from the flooded road onto the beach, don’t ask me to describe the logic behind this crazy idea. It simply washes away the sand as you can see in the above photos. One thing I do know however, logic and common sense are thin on the ground in Thailand.

A perfect Pattaya day

After all the rain and floods and beach erosion you can always be sure a perfect day is just around the corner.

One night Bangkok, never enough

One night Bangkok, never enough

One night Bangkok, never enough

One night Bangkok, never enough, plus one night Bangkok makes a hard man humble, Not much between despair and ecstasy, One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble, Can’t be too careful with your company, I can feel the devil walking next to me.

We have all heard the song and some of us have been lucky enough to live the dream. 🙂

The photo above is at Nana Plaza with Greg Clee, John Sinclair and Sean Fenton, all Aussies who love Thailand.

This it not part of my travel blog, just part of my personal history from 2007.

One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head (HQ Audio)

“One night in Bangkok and the world’s your oyster
The bars are temples but their pearls ain’t free
You’ll find a god in every golden cloister
And if you’re lucky, then the god’s a she
I can feel an angel sliding up to me”

One night Bangkok, never enough

One night Bangkok, never enough

Say no more…….

Khaosan Road

One night Bangkok, never enough

“Khaosan” translates as “milled rice”, a reminder that in former times the street was a major Bangkok rice market. In the last 20 years, however, Khaosan Road has developed into a world famous “backpacker ghetto”. It offers cheap accommodation, ranging from “mattress in a box” style hotels to reasonably priced 3-star hotels. In an essay on the backpacker culture of Khaosan Road,

Khaosan Road cafe

One night Bangkok, never enough

There are several pubs and bars where backpackers meet to discuss their travels. The area is internationally known as a centre of dancing, partying, and just prior to the traditional Thai New Year (Songkran festival) of 13-15 April, water splashing that usually turns into a huge water fight. One Thai writer has described Khaosan as “…a short road that has the longest dream in the world”.

 What a beautiful face.

One night Bangkok, never enough

A pedicure in Bangkok is an absolute please when done by such a beautiful girl.

Long tail boat

One night Bangkok, never enough

The craft is designed to carry passengers on a river & may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters long, and a canopy. There is a great variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look, the sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

This is where I stayed for 7 years each time I would visit Pattaya until I moved to Thailand from Australia in October 2011. A great location with a reasonable price, I preferred room number 311.

Sean Fenton and Ann get engaged, it is now 2015 and they are living happily in Townsville with a number of children. On the left is Brad Robbins also from Townsville and on The right Greg Clee who is my neighbour in Pattaya.

Hello sexy man, where you go?

Tiny girl at the Honey Pot

One night Bangkok, never enough

Rod is a fairly big guy, in fact he used to be a Sydney cop, he towers over the little waitress.

Honey Pot Soi 2

One night Bangkok, never enough

It was my favourite bar for 2 or 3 years, sadly the original Honey Pot is now closed. Typical Pattaya, nothing stays the same for too long.

Honey Pot

One of my favourite Honey Pot girls, I love the sexy glasses, and if you look through the slideshow you will notice one night she was wearing red & white socks, the Sydney Swans colours. 🙂
