April 18, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Driving south from Gosford to Sydney.

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour were all waiting for me after my leasurely drive down the east coast from Surfers Paradise in QLD.

It was a great drive down from from Surfers Paradise  to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.

The historic Roseville Cinema

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour On the road between Hornsby & Sydney is The historic Roseville Cinema on the Pacific Highway, noted for its art deco facade. It became Traynor’s Picture Palace in 1919, but did not become a full-scale cinema until 1936. Roseville Cinema was renovated & updated to two screens in 1995.

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

April 14, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Incredible landscape

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine, nowhere else in the world have I seen colours similar to outback Australia. Red earth, blackened trees and a beautiful blue sky.

I took three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Cooper Pedy on the first leg of our journey on the way to Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Excitement

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine The girls started clapping wildly when they saw the kangaroo sign so you can imagine how excited they were when they saw a live one.

Here we are in Coober Pedy

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine You know when you are near the town when you see all the mounds of dirt & gravel.

OK, what are we waiting for?

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Let’s go & check out this underground village.

My trusty Holden Commodore was our transport on our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

Mini mountains everywhere

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 km north of Adelaide. The 2011 census showed its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians). The town is sometimes referred to as the “opal capital of the world” due to the quantity of precious opals that are mined there.

 Men at work

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This was our first indication of work happening around the mines.

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine As you can clearly see not all the people live underground.

 Opal capital of the World

photo 594a05c9-2ec2-49a7-b40a-dccf5dd15fa6.jpg There are quite a few opal shops, restaurants and a variety of accommodation ranging from four star to backpackers and caravan/camping areas.

Desert Cave Hotel

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

The hotel has rooms above ground and in underground caves, this relaxed hotel is a 14-minute walk from the Big Winch Lookout. For an excellent discount just book through THIS LINK.

Big Winch Lookout

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine The famous historic Big Winch Scenic Lookout with 360 degrees view of the town.

Is this Coober Pedy art?

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine To be honest with you I have no idea what it is. πŸ™‚

On the other hand….

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This may well be the brother of “Tin Man” from The Wizard of Oz. πŸ™‚

 On the subject of movies

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This monster was apparently part of a movie set that has been abandoned and left here as a talking point.

We have finished the first stage of our Journey.

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Next stop is Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

April 13, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia reminds me of the last frontier and a great road trip I took in 2003. Three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & I travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Coober Pedy in South Australia, a fascinating opal mining town where most of the population live in underground houses, then on to Ayers Rock and back home to the Gold Coast via Hervey Bay where we went whale watching. On our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

The above photo is at Tenterfield on the New England Highway.

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia Our first day on the road, we will overnight in Broken Hill.

Trades Hall in Broken Hill.

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia The Trades Hall is Broken Hill’s most historically important building.

Broken Hill in outback NSW.

Typical outback building

photo d33b4a09-a6bd-4229-af6e-90fb1c3fe733.jpg In the 19th and early 20th century Broken Hill was home to a community of Afghans. Afghans worked as camel drivers in parts of outback Australia, and they made a significant contribution to economic growth when transport options were limited. The camel drivers formed the first sizeable Muslim communities in Australia, and in Broken Hill they left their mark in the form of the first mosque in NSW (1891).

Wilmington South Australia

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia Wilmington is a farming community, known for sheep, wheat and barley, but more recently for the planting of olive groves.

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Every time you turn around there is another great photo opportunity.

Narrow lanes

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy I used to wonder why so many European towns & villages had such narrow streets & lanes. Then a friend of mine Riny Doyle, from Breil Sur Roya in the south of France, explained it was simple to control the temperature. Narrow lanesw meant a much cooler enviroment, & lets face it in those ancient times there were no air conditioned shopping malls where you could het relief from the heat. πŸ™‚

Delightful little cafes & restaurants

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Around every corner there is a little cafe or restaurant.

Great Pattaya German Restaurant The outoor & open area as you can see in the photo plus the air conditioned bakery  in the first photo which is where I prefer to eat.

Lets talk about the food

Great Pattaya German Restaurant It is such good value for the excellent quality. I guessing 80% of the customers are German, in fact the Naklua area is where they prefer to live.

 Lots of healthy entres

Great Pattaya German Restaurant Leckerle have a large menu to choose from, all dishes are reasonably priced.

However this one is my favourite

Great Pattaya German Restaurant Pea soup with German sausage. The good news is that it’s the best I have ever tasted, the bad news is it is rather filling and I have to settle for a small 2nd course. πŸ™‚

 Everyone loves the soup

Great Pattaya German Restaurant Here is my good friend from Australia Geoff Robinson & his Thai lady Nana, they agree with me that Leckerle is great value.

Nana love the deserts

photo fe79f12d-3467-40c3-8b75-95e1a007f0c5.jpg I must admit I do as well.

More Aussie friends

photo Leckerle Viv amp friends 2.jpg The big guy Viv Kennelly is another friend from Australia, I introduced hiom & his friends to Leckerle in February 2017 & they likes it so much they returned the following evening. πŸ™‚

Another favourite dish

Great Pattaya German Restaurant After the soup this is a small dish I often order, prawns & bacon on German bread, delicious.

Great Pattaya German Restaurant

Great Pattaya German Restaurant Another tasty small dish I often have after the soup. Slices of ham on German bread.

 Nice decor

Great Pattaya German Restaurant Plus another bomus is they always seem to play very good background music from the 80s & 90s.

Hamish & I attack the Pork Knuckle

Great Pattaya German Restaurant My friend Hamish Elton also loves his food & remarked the knucle was one of the best he has eaten in Pattaya.

Sabai Wing Soi 1 North Pattaya

Great Pattaya German Restaurant

Sabai Wing Soi 1, 3 swimming pools and nice rooms, 100 meters from BigC, & a 10 minute walk to Leckerle, great value at only $30 usd per night as of 2017. I live in the high-rise in the background, Markland. For a great room rate book here.

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya started in November 2015 when they started demolishing the shopping complex. That seemed to take the best part of a year before actual building commenced. Now they are really making progress as you will see from this photo blog.

It’s a huge site adjacent to the Dolphin roundabout  as you can see from the above photo.

A popular cafe

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya I used to often have breakfast at this popular little Thai restaurant beside the Dolphin roundabout.

Above you see it, below you don’t. πŸ™‚

The wrecking ball at work.

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya          Building Terminal 21 Pattaya

It is taking months & months.

Slowly everything is coming apart

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya Escalators & elevators have already gone.

Here comes the heavy machinery

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya Now they are getting serious. πŸ™‚

Workplace health & safety

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya Does not really exist in Thailand. πŸ™‚

Looking like a bomb site December 24 2015

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya You could be mistaken thinking this is a war zone.

Bye bye Hong Club

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya Not sure what went on here but it’s all over now folks.

All this has to be removed

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya Knocking it down seems like the easy part, now somebody has to remove the rubble.

OK, we are getting somewhere May 21st 2016

Building Terminal 21 Pattaya In the top left hnd corner you can see the Dolphin roundabout.

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya

April 4, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya is located on Beach Rd next to the Hard Rock hotel. I have been walking past every morning since it opened early 2015 & never realised what a hidden gem it was.

Beautiful decor

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya Overlooking Beach Rd & Pattaya bay the decor is as good as anything in Pattaya.

Coffee & pastry at the front

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya The room is made up of two adjoining sections, coffee shop at the front & the moree formal restaurant & kitchen at the rear.

Looking towards the rear

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya Here is a modern version of Buggs bunny with one blue eye & one red. πŸ™‚

The main restaurant section

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya The door at the far end connects to the Mera Mare Hotel. For an excellent room rate just book through THIS LINK.

Excellent food

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya This dish, Pork Belly & Prawns was quite different and perfectly cooked.

Mango Cheesecake

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya Desert is one of my many weaknesses and this mango cheesecake was to die for. πŸ™‚

Many more varieties here

photo Pastry addiction 7.jpg Plus a variety of ice cream flavours as well.

I’m coming back for the mango

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya is a great choice for afternoon tea, lunch or dinner. It’s a touch on the expensive side & a glass of house wine is priced way over the top at B260.

Wine is too expensive.

photo 2d75e81b-f96e-4dcd-aede-45c6ec610e0a.jpg Sadly B260 for a glass of house wine will probably stop me & many of my friends coming for dinner, hopefully management with see the light and offer house wine at around B150.

Ultra modern kitchen

Pastry Addiction Mera Mare Hotel Pattaya A fabulous looking kitchen which matches the rest of the decor.

Location

Another look at the rabbit.
