Amazing World Food Volume Two

Eat to live or live to eat?

Amazing World Food Volume Two starting with Japan

Amazing World Food Volume Two Amazing World Food Volume Two closely following  “Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one” featuring my favorite food from all over this wonderful world. I’m not pretending to be a food critic I’m just highlighting some memorable food I have enjoyed over the years.

Kanazawa

Amazing World Food Volume Two Salmon sashimi with salmon caviar sprinkled with edible gold leaf.  The gold leaf is used in jewelry, cosmetics etc as well as the edible product you see here.

Shabu Shabu at The Ginza

Amazing World Food Volume Two Wagyu beef at Shabusen at the Ginza, a terrific restaurant for Shabu Shabu, go at lunch time for special prices. I could dedicate this whole post to Japanese cuisine which is my favorite food, however I do that in another photo blog.

 Itaewon in Korea

Amazing World Food Volume Two This particular street in Seoul where all the restaurants are looks very ordinary through the day but it comes alive when night falls. It is the best bar restaurant area I have ever seen anywhere in the world.

Korean Street food

French food in Seoul

photo c7b9e5df-3908-4234-b88f-4c8eaa7d7810.jpg To be honest I’m not a huge fan of Korean food which is mainly due to ignorance, in future I must try ta few more dishes. Consequently here I am in Seoul eating french food, an entree of prawns, avocado & egg followed by steak tartare.

Steak Tartare

photo e3c63387-3f12-43e2-881c-a775c79141a3.jpg As I have found over the years this is a very tasty dish but too much for one person, better to share next time.

Lisbon in Portugal

photo 9f2c84f4-f698-4b7e-a0e2-3d71a96fee6e.jpg A wonderful city for food & wine, in fact it quickly became one of my favorite European cities.

What an amazing atmosphere

photo fa7e414c-7705-4b86-95d1-94e226b782e0.jpg I’m sure this restaurant has not changed for hundreds of years. 🙂

One of the 6,000 restaurants.

photo f618c9b4-3b76-4680-873c-dfbd05b4e7bb.jpg TripAdvisor show around 6,000 restaurants is Lisbon so I’m guessing nobody eats at home. 🙂

The cakes & tarts

Amsterdam

A light lunch at Cafe de Prins

Dinner at De Belhamel, lamb cooked to perfection.

photo a5601f90-2df6-41c2-b93e-026cca6687be.jpg TripAdvisor rate #93 of 3,241 Restaurants in Amsterdam. Here is the Michelin guide description; This art nouveau style restaurant is located at the confluence of two canals and has a delightful terrace overlooking the water. Influences from France and Italy combine to deliver tasty dishes with clearly defined flavours.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one

Eat to live or live to eat?

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one starting with AUSTRALIA.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one, you are probably not mistaken thinking my life revolves around food. I guess I’m guilty as charged, therefore I’m going to highlight through my photo blog called “Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one” my favorite food from all over this wonderful world.

The best seafood in the world.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Of course that’s just my opinion, Australia has the 7th longest coastline in the world, 25,760 km (16,006 miles) so is it any wonder there is an abundance of seafood on offer?

There is only one problem.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Seafood like most things in 2017 in Australia, is rather expensive. However that is not going to stop me enjoying this wonderful food. In March 2017 I was in Port Macquarie on the NSW coast where they have some of Australia’s best seafood. What you see above was around $25.

Next in the alphabet I believe is AUSTRIA.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one If you visit Austria you will certainly eat a schnitzel, absolutely delicious 🙂

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one

We are a long way from the ocean in Salzburg but that makes no difference, they love seafood and offer very high quality as you can clearly see. Check out my road trip from St Moritz to Salzburg.

Belgium

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one I have traveled to Brussels & Bruges & really enjoyed the food. They seemed have an obsession with Mussels & Fries, & Mussels I can take or leave. Consequently I indulged in other areas. There is no doubt they brew the best beer in the world.

Bruges.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one

One of my many weaknesses, I guess that’s why I’m 112 kilos.

CAPE TOWN

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one  The entree pictured above was as good as I have had anywhere in the world. Prawn and avocado tian with sesame wonton crisp’s and a touch of “caviar” for around $9 aud. A dozen Oysters were only $22 aud.

We can’t escape the seafood in Cape Town

photo 758056a7-645c-4b01-a049-0af49830746c.jpg Why would we want to when it’s served like this? 🙂

Lets take a closer look at this great food

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one If you are in Cape Town make sure you visit  OYO restaurant & cocktail bar.

Croatia & Bosnia

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Without any doubt they have the best  Cevapcici in the world. This fabulous snack was in Sarajevo, Ćevapi has its origins in the Balkans during the Ottoman period, and represents a regional specialty similar to the kofte kebab.

Donner Kebab

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Another specialty is the Donner Kebab origininally from Turkey, delicious but for me the Cevapcici wins hands-down. 🙂

And the winner is….

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one THE Cevapcici.

ITALY BELLA BELLA

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Famous of course for both food & wine, when I am there I’m always looking for a  Veal Scallopini. I doubt if I have ever had a better one than this in a side walk restaurant beside Lake Como.

I know this is the best pizza I have ever eaten.

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one Caffè Italiano, Via Isola delle Stinche, 11R-13R in Florence. Without a doubt this is the best pizza I have ever eaten in my life. You can’t book at this small restaurant, you must wait outside in the lane until there is a free table, believe me however, the wait is worth it.

Just go there

Amazing Food Planet Earth Volume one The magician who makes them is originally from Naples.

Portifino costa plenty. 🙂

photo 03ee6257-1efc-4f44-910e-fb6a9733ce34.jpg I’m going to wind up volume one at Portofino where the delicious seafood soup in 2006 cost 26 Euros, it’s probably twice that price now. 🙂

Lunch by the Bay

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant is on the waterfront in Naklua. At low tide the view is not very attractive & the restaurant itself resembles a large barn. Put all that aside & just enjoy the fabulous fresh seafood & quick efficient service.

A big tin shed

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant The customers who regularly eat here would be 95% Thai, mainly because tourists would never walk past or hear about it.

Location

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant

Either catch a Baht bus from the Dolphin roundabout or just hire a taxi. Believe me it’s worth the effort.

What about the food you ask?

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Fresh, reasonably priced & lots to choose from.

Clams with lots of garlic

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Delicious, in Australia we call them pippies.

Prawns cooked to perfection

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Fresh & cooked to perfection.

Why are they are so fresh?

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Shortly before they arrive at your table they are happily swimming around without a care in the world. 🙂

Salted fish, a Thai specialty.

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Thai’s have mastered salted fish, one of their many terrific dishes.

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Being an amateur camera enthusiast I’m more than happy with the low tide mudflats of Naklua, it provides so many more photo opportunities.

Can you imagine the “for sale” sign?

Mum Aroi Pattaya Seafood Restaurant Needs a little work. 🙂

Bath River Avon South West England

June 9, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Ancient English City

Bath River Avon South West England

City of Bath photo Bath69.jpgBath River Avon South West England is quite a beautiful city. Located 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 13 miles (21 km) south-east of Bristol. In 2011, its population was 88,859.

The Royal Crescent in Bath

Bath River Avon South West England

Many notable people have either lived or stayed in the Royal Crescent since it was first built over 230 years ago, and some are commemorated on special plaques attached to the relevant buildings.

The Royal Crescent now includes a hotel and a Georgian house museum, while some of the houses have been converted into flats and offices. It is a popular location for the makers of films and television programmes, and a major tourist attraction in its own right.

The Empire is a landmark building

Bath River Avon South West England

Like many other cities I visit I took advantage of the open top tourist bus to see many interesting parts of the city.  The Empire is a landmark building in Bath in the heart of the city was built in 1901.

Inside the Empire is Garfunkel’s an interesting restaurant and is part of a chain with branches in London and Edinburgh.

Roman Baths

Bath River Avon South West England

Bath is famous for the Roman Baths that date back to when the first shrine at the site of the hot springs was discovered by the British king Bladud who built the first baths in 836 BC.

Bath River Avon South West England

Bath River Avon South West England

Pulteney Bridge  was completed by 1774, and connected the city with the newly built Georgian town of Bathwick.  Pulteney Bridge is open to pedestrians, but only buses and taxis can drive across.

The weir at Pulteney Bridge

Quite an impressive sight.

Bath Abbey

Bath River Avon South West England

The Abbey Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul,  commonly known as Bath Abbey, it is an Anglican parish church and a former Benedictine monastery. Founded in the 7th century, Bath Abbey was reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries.

It is a pleasure to walk around this lovely city.

Very distinctive architecture in Bath River Avon South West England.

County Hotel Bath

Bath River Avon South West England

Bath celebrity chef Martin Blunos has returned. This well known Chef has opened his latest venture at the County hotel. Martin became a fixture on the Bath cullinary scene in the 1990s with his restaurant Lettonie which earned two Michelin stars. Simply named Blunos, the new restaurant will be dedicated to serving fresh fish and seafood and Martin says it will be very different from Lettonie.

Holburne Museum in Bath

Bath River Avon South West England

The first public art gallery in Bath is home to fine and decorative arts built around the collection of Sir William Holburne. The foundation stone was laid in 1796 and the building was ready by 1799. Bath South West England is certainly worth a visit, not far away on the same river is Bradford on Avon, put it on your itinerary.

Bath Priory Restaurant

Bath River Avon South West England You feel as though you are a guest in a wonderful private house rather than a hotel.

Bruges Medieval Buildings Cobblestone Streets

June 6, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Bruges is really worth a visit.

Bruges Medieval Buildings Cobblestone Streets

Bruges Medieval Buildings Cobblestone Streets

Bruges Medieval Buildings Cobblestone Streets, in fact I knew very little of this great place until I saw the 2008 movie called “In Bruges” with Colin Farrell, then I knew I just had to visit, I had the same feeling about Versailles after seeing the Woody Allen movie “Midnight in Paris,” so actually this European trip was planned around both those fascinating destinations. I was not disappointed the city is quite special, expensive but really special.  😆

Bruges waterfront homes.

In fact they were grumpy most of the trip which caused us to split up once we got back to Brighton on the south coast of England.

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Sandy beach at Bournemouth.

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort has a sandy beach unlike Brighton beach and many others of the English coast. I was there in 2007 and returned in 09 mainly to visit the Westbeach restaurant again. The Beach is long and clean. There is plenty of space to chill out. Lovely views and lots to do with places to eat on the promenade and pier.

The benefit of sand

You certainly can’t do this on a beach with stones instead of sand. 🙂

Bournemouth Beach has sand which is a huge improvement on many English beaches.

Westbeach Restaurant

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort Good English restaurants, many people think they are few and far between, but here is one to consider. The Westbeach restaurant in Bournemouth is certainly worth a visit, great location on the beach, with a good menu offering a nice selection. I first visited Westbeach December 2007 then returned in 2009 so things may have changed by now.

Here is an example of the Westbeach food.

AFC Bournemouth

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort Huge news in 2015 for the local football club who are to be promoted to the premier league. As recently as 2008, Bournemouth sat slumped at the very foot of the four levels of the English league pyramid. Of the 92 teams spanning League Two all the way up to the Premier League, the Cherries, who began the season with minus-17 points as a penalty for entering bankruptcy with £4 million worth of debt, were no. 92. Bournemouth weren’t just on the brink of dropping out of the division structure,  but out of existence altogether. Seven years later, a club that recorded an annual turnover of just £5.1 million for the 2012-13 season will be flooded with about £120 million in additional Premier League revenue.

My local bar in Thailand

David Herd Cherry bar My local bar in Thailand is the Cherry Bar so I guess now I’ll have to follow the Cherries. 🙂

Sadly the bar was sold in 2016 & is now called Billabong 2, life as I knew it will never be the same. 🙂

Another restaurant near the Pier.

Beachside at Bournemouth

Also as a comparison to Brighton sand is so much more inviting than pebbles. 🙂

Beckington Trowbridge South West England

Church of St George, Beckington

Beckington Trowbridge South West England

Beckington Trowbridge South West England

Beckington Trowbridge South West England 2009, how did I find myself there you may well ask. Quite simple really, since 2007 I have been travelling to England to visit my friend Alan who is a guest of Her Majesty. His brother Bill Austin and I have become good friends as well, so I stay with him and his partner Joan Baptiste, and between visiting Alan Bill and I tour around the country.

So to answer the question, Bill lives in Beckington and works for the council in Trowbridge. Beckington village is 5.8 miles from Trowbridge town centre and 10 miles from the historical city of Bath.

The church is just across the road from Bill and Joan’s home and dates back to the 14th century.

Trowbridge

There is evidence that the land on which Trowbridge is built was being farmed more than 3,000 years ago. In the 10th century written records and architectural ruins begin marking Trowbridge’s existence as a village.

Wandering around South West England

Shaftesbury in Dorset

Wandering around South West England is a total pleasure.

Wandering around South West England

Wandering around South West England, I have taken thousands of photos there and this one is my favorite. It is Gold Hill, Shaftesbury which is in Dorset. There is a nice tea room at the top of the hill where you can enjoy scones with jam & cream while enjoying the view. I will try to give you some useful travel tips towards the end of this post.

Lyme Regis, Dorset.

Wandering around South West England Lyme Regis in Dorset is a special place, the coastline in either direction is magnificent. The cliffs over the  boarder are grey and crumbling, those eastwards, towards Charmouth are also unstable – especially after heavy rain, and those at Black Ven are capped with a layer of Gold. The town is noted for the fossils found in the cliffs and beaches, which are part of the Heritage Coast—known commercially as the Jurassic Coast—a World Heritage Site. For information please click here.

Weymouth Travelling South West England

Travelling South West England

Weymouth is a seaside town in Dorset,  situated on a sheltered bay at the mouth of the River Wey on the English Channel coast. The town is 13 kilometres (8 mi) south of Dorchester and 8 kilometres (5 mi) north of the Isle of Portland. The town’s population is 52,323 (2011). The town is the largest settlement in Dorset following the unitary authorities of Bournemouth and Poole   The history of the borough stretches back to the 12th century; including involvement in the spread of the Black Death, the settlement of the Americas, the development of Georgian architecture, and preparations for World War II. Fishing and trading employ fewer people in the area since their peak in earlier centuries, but tourism has continuously increased its presence in the town since the 18th century and is now the primary industry. Weymouth is a tourist resort, and its economy depends on its harbor and visitor attractions; the town is a gateway situated halfway along the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site on the Dorset and east Devon coast, important for its geology and landforms. Weymouth Harbour is home to cross-channel ferries, pleasure boats and private yachts, and nearby Portland Harbour is home to the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, where the sailing events of the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games were held.

Wandering around South West England to Dorchester

Wandering around South West England

Dorchester is the county town of Dorset. A historic market town, Dorchester lies on the banks of the River Frome, in the Frome Valley, just south of the Dorset Downs and north of the South Dorset Ridgeway, that separates the area from Weymouth, 8 miles (13 km) south. Dorchester is noted as being home and inspiration to the author Thomas Hardy, whose novel The Mayor of Casterbridge was based on the town. In the 2001 Census the official population of Dorchester was 16,171, although by 2010 this was estimated to have risen to 18,280.

St Ives in Cornwall

Wandering around South West England

St Ives is a seaside town, civil parish and port in Cornwall. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing. Wikipedia

Wandering around South West England Here we are at Lands End in Cornwall, England’s most westerly point. Wind levels in winter reach around 20-25 knots, which is windier than most of England. The highest temperature recorded is 28.9 °C, and the lowest temperature recorded is -3.4 °C.

Tithe Barn Bradford on Avon

Wandering around South West England

A tithe barn was a type of barn used in much of northern Europe in the Middle Ages for storing tithes—one tenth of a farm’s produce which was given to the Church. Tithe barns were usually associated with the village church or rectory and independent farmers took their tithes there.

Tithe Barn

Wandering around South West England

The village priests wouldn’t have to pay tithes—the purpose of the tithe being their support—and some had their own farms anyway, which are now village greens in some villages.
