Central food hall Bangkok

May 16, 2016 by David Herd

A wonderful Bangkok food hall

Central food hall Bangkok

Central food hall Bangkok

Central food hall Bangkok is quite fantastic, smaller perhaps than other bigger malls close by however the quality and presentation is first class.

Central has several department store branches in Bangkok, Chidlom however is their flagship store and attracts many expats and “well to do” Thai shoppers.

BBQ duck is delicious at Four Seasons

It does not get much better than this, there is another branch just up the road at the Siam Paragon.

So many great food choices here and so little time. 🙂

Did I mention the choices?

Central food hall Chidlom Bangkok

The number of restaurant choices here is staggering, there are over 50 listed here, there are even cooking classes you can attend.

Catering for the Germans.

What a terrific display at this specialty Bavarian food stall, you just have to buy something.

The displays are so inviting

It really is a pleasure to shop or eat here, everything is presented beautifully.

For all you seafood lovers

A selection of salmon to die for, get your dose of amiga 3 here.

You will need some wine as well

If you can’t find something that suits you here you are just not trying. Wines from all the great regions of the world are on sale here.

Many years ago in Sydney Australia I owned a liquor store, believe me it was nothing like you see here. In those days I would store my favourite reds until it was the right time to drink them and what an incredible difference that made.

I sometimes visit friends of mine in Australia who have a vineyard, now that is a lot of fun, follow this link to see what I mean.

The Central seven story building is dwarfed by a number of modern buildings opposite on Sukhumvit road.

Thanks for visiting my Central food hall Bangkok photo blog. Incidentally you can walk directly into the neighbouring Central Embassy which has  has one of the best cinema’s in Bangkok, plus many upmarket labels including Versace, Gucci, Prada,  Givenchy and many more, in other words it’s way above my pay grade. The architecture will knock your socks of. 🙂

Seven deadly Songkran days

April 16, 2016 by David Herd

Songkran 2016

Seven deadly Songkran days

Seven deadly Songkran days

Seven deadly Songkran days photo blog focuses on two things, first the tragic loss of life and the thousands of people who are seriously injured. Sadly Thailand has the 2nd worst road toll in the world after war torn Libya, mainly due to poor driving skills and alcohol fueled accidents. Songkran however is the black spot of this terrible statistic.  My sadness and sympathy does not lie with the several hundred who lose their life, they are gone and know nothing any more, my sympathy is for the parents who have lost children and the thousands of Thai people seriously injured during these Seven deadly Songkran days.

Secondly, lots of photos showing the joy and happiness thousands of people get from this famous celebration.

I would like to give credit to the Bangkok Post for borrowing many of their photos for this blog, many thanks to this great newspaper.

The first four days

Seven deadly Songkran days

The fourth day of the Songkran festival’s “seven dangerous days’’ saw 259 people lose their lives in road accidents across the country, up almost 36% from 2015.

Most accidents involved motorcycles, with 78.8%, followed by pick-up trucks, 10.8%. (BKK Post)

The madness that is Songkran

Seven deadly Songkran days

The Songkran celebration has many symbolic traditions. The mornings begin with merit-making, visiting local temples and offering food to the Buddhist monks. On this specific occasion, pouring water on Buddha statues is considered an iconic ritual for this holiday. It represents purification and the washing away one’s sins and bad luck. Originally water was splashed gently on friends family & neighbours, today it has evolved into an all out water fight which certainly does not reassemble the original tradition.

Lets focus on happiness

Seven deadly Songkran days

The tragedy & sadness of the road carnage needs to be balanced by the joy and happiness most people in Thailand, consequently here is the sort of thing that makes me happy this time of the year. 🙂

A beautiful lady in traditional dress.

Seven deadly Songkran days

This is one of my favourite Songkran images, not sure who to credit.

Traditional Songkran

Gently pouring water on Buddha statues is considered to be an iconic ritual for this holiday. It represents purification and the washing away one’s sins and bad luck.

The other side of the coin

Seven deadly Songkran days

The two photos above demonstrate the both ends of the spectrum.

Have you ever seen a happier child?

Seven deadly Songkran days

Riding on his father’s shoulders he is having the time of his life.

More happy faces

Thanks once again to the Bangkok Post for another great photo.

Gunfight at the Bangkok Corral

Seven deadly Songkran days

Thousands of tourists flock to Thailand to participate in the greatest water fight in the world. Pamplona in Spain has the running of the bulls, Thailand has the running of the water cannons. 🙂

What did I do?

Seven deadly Songkran days

This guy seems to be denying any wrongdoing, could it be because he is not wearing a helmet? No, they rarely enforce that in Thailand, unless of course they see a Farang without one. 🙂

Here is one of my favourite Bangkok hotels in Sukhumvit Soi 11, use this link for a great rate.

Fabulous foam at Centralworld

A sea of white foam and everybody is having fun.

The very best of Songkran

I intended to focus on the danger on the roads during Songkran however images like the one above totally distract me.

Total determination

Concentrating totally on eliminating the enemy. 🙂 (Photo Bkk Post)

Many of these water cannons have a very long range.

Fifth day the terrible toll continues.

Seven deadly Songkran days

The number of people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol over the past seven is 81,541, including 50,271 motorcycle drivers and 31,270 drivers of cars and public vehicles.

How sweet she is.

Songkran Madness Thailand

After any bad news like the shocking road toll we need some good news, and here she is. 🙂

My name is Rambo

Seven deadly Songkran days

I have a licence to spill.

Songkran is “so in your face”

Seven deadly Songkran days

There is absolutely no escape from this “in your face” experience. 🙂

Day six and the news is still bad

Seven deadly Songkran days

The first six days of the “seven dangerous days” of Songkran saw 397 people lose their lives in road crashes across Thailand, a 29.74% jump from last year, with drink-driving remaining the major cause. (BKK Post)

Songkran madness in 2nd road Pattaya

What could possibly go wrong?

Seven deadly Songkran days

You are on a bike, you get hit by a stream of water, what could possibly go wrong?

The battle rages

Seven deadly Songkran days

I feel overall we have to properly balance the whole situation, fun versus death & suffering, in my book fun loses. I’m not advocating doing away with Songkran, however somehow the authorities have to do more to stop the road carnage.

Seven deadly Songkran days

Seven deadly Songkran days

Drink-driving remained the biggest single cause of road crashes, blamed for 34.09%, followed by speeding at 32.93%. Most crashes involved motorcycles (80.67%), followed by pick-up trucks (8.85%). (From Bangkok Post.)

Compare the last six years.

Seven deadly Songkran days

Four out of every five accidents involved motorcycles. So far a total of 442 people have been killed. It should also be noted that statistics taken inside Thailand only includes victims who died at the scene. Can you imagine how much worse the statistics would be if they also included people who died within 30 days?

80 lives lost every day

This link may answer some of the questions.

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Good value Bangkok hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels are very good value in this part of the city. I place these hotels in the under B1,700 category, which is under $50 USD.  The photo above is on Sukhumvit close to Soi 4 Nana.

Without a doubt AGODA is the best online Hotel booking site.

Lets check out the Dynasty Inn.

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

The Dynasty Inn is in Sukhumvit  Soi 4 Nana, a few meters from the infamous Nana Plaza. I can highly recommend this 2.5 star hotel because I have stayed there probably 50 times in the last 20 years. For lots of information regarding Nana Plaza  check out my blog.

Dynasty Grande

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Just around the corner at 21 Soi Sukhumvit 6, Sukhumvit Rd is the more upmarket Dynasty Grande, very good large rooms, I would rate it 3 to 3.5 stars. Rooms are around 2,000 Baht per night or $60. Bear in mind that is the same rate at Centre Point in Silom which is a much better hotel. The Dynasty however is a good choice for those who can’t resist the lure of Nana Plaza. If you use this link you can sometimes get a room for B2000.

Citadines hotel is a great location in Soi 11 Sukhumvit to stay in Bangkok, right in the middle of the action. Mulligans 24 hour Irish pub is on the ground floor.

Located a fair distance down Soi 4 Nana, they provide a shuttle to Sukhumvit every 30 minutes. Make sure you book a superior room, use this link for a great price.

On the ground floor are mostly open-air beer bars to choose from. Girls will try to tempt you in for a drink or a game of Jenga but not much really happens here, however it is where I prefer to drink and watch the passing parade.  The shows and the A Go Go Bars with naughty names like Lollipop,Pretty Lady and Red Lips are located on the first floor.  Girls here will step into your path and will try to drag you in for a look.

Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok

Totally awesome

Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok

Sirocco Bangkok

Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok is one of the best rooftop restaurants bars in the world. In fact I really doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok. I would certainly like to know if there is any place more spectacular than Sirocco which is located of the 64th floor of the State Tower building in Bangkok.

Great location close to the Sky Train and the river ferries. One of the nicest ways to spend an hour in Bangkok is cruising along the mighty Chao Phraya river. The river ferry takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.

Back to Sirocco

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

March 21, 2016 by David Herd

Waiting for sunset

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok  is one of the many sky bars in this great city. I doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok.

Mode Sathorn Hotel

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

Located on the 38th floor of the Mode Sathorn Hotel which is right next door to Surasak sky train. A nice relaxing atmosphere and the drinks are rather expensive as you would expect.

Freeway traffic

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

The Bangkok afternoon traffic builds up just before sunset.

High above the traffic.

Rooftop Bar Sathorn Bangkok

The bar opens at 6pm so you can have an early drink and wait for the sunset. It was rather disappointing on this particular due the the haze caused by farmers burning off in the north of the country.

Waiting for the crowd to arrive.

One this evening I enjoyed pre dinner drinks before dining at the Wine Connection in Patpong.

The lovely lady is the Roof manager, very friendly with a beautiful smile. She has worked at some other bangkok Roof bars and I think the 38 bars is very lucky to have her on the staff.

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

January 27, 2016 by David Herd

On everybody’s bucket list

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

Patpong Road red light

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok is known as the cities original red light district. These days it is more popular as a night market, however many pole dancing & beer bars are still there. These days Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are more popular so called entertainment areas.

Shop to you drop at Patpong Road Bangkok

I notice many of the items here are so much cheaper if you shop at Chinatown.

It was a Tuesday night and very quiet, perhaps it was a little early for the crowds at Patpong Road Bangkok.

There is no doubt Thai people have taken street food to an art form.

You can eat well here for around B50.

Up a lazy river

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry

Chao Phraya river ferry which takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.In the photo above you have The Peninsula Hotel on the left and the Shangri-La Hotel on the right.

 Bankok’s famous Long-tail boat

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry

The long-tail boat, known as Ruea Hang Yao is a type of watercraft native to Southeast Asia, which uses a common automotive engine as a readily available and maintainable power-plant. A craft designed to carry passengers on a river may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters, and a canopy. There is much variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look. The sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

Cold beer in Chinatown

Chao Phraya river ferry

The Bangkok river ferry got me to Chinatown along the mighty Chao Phraya river which is known as the River of Kings. It is the life blood of Bangkok, around 50,000 people use its ferries each day. Slow barges bearing cargo coast upstream, kids still frolic in the brown water. Wooden shacks, mottled by the elements, still hang over the water. Check out my photo blog here.

Soaring hotels and condominiums hem in solemn temples, churches and civic buildings that look 19th century European, while close by the odd wooden sampan sells noodle soup or dried squid to hungry river workers. It is this juxtaposition of calm and chaotic, modern and traditional, religious and secular, ugly and sublime, foreign and indigenous that makes the Chao Phraya so evocative. My thanks to Bangkok.com for their wonderful description of the River of Kings.

Not everybody is happy on the river

A Vietnamese cargo ship ploughed into riverside houses along the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng district yesterday April 5t 2017, damaging three homes.

Residents fled to the streets in panic as the cargo ship loomed over them. Three houses were damaged, one badly, but nobody was injured.

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

December 25, 2015 by David Herd

Welcome to Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing is a hive of activity as you would expect, narrow lanes with thousands of people hunting for bargains.

Thien Fah Foundation

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

The Tien Fa foundation was formed in 1902, making it the oldest charitable society in Bangkok. The foundation provides free medical care to the indigent. The buildings surrounding the shrine actually house the hospital facilities.

The foundation is on Yaowarat Road just a short distance from the Chinatown gate in the circle.

  Very busy street Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping

The Chinese community in Bangkok pre-dates the founding of the Thai capital in the city. Indeed, the land where the grand palace is today was originally a community of Chinese traders. When King Rama I decided to establish the capital on the site of the village of Bangkok, he asked the traders to move. They settled to the east of the new city, along the river. It may be hard to believe today, but the narrow Sampaeng Lane, which isn’t even big enough for a car, was once the Chinatown Bangkok main street.

Typical side-walk shop

The best way to see the area is to pick a starting point and wander around.

Very handy transport, however usually the drivers try to badger you into visiting a gem store etc so they can receive a kickback. Taxis are a far better option, cheaper and air conditioned.

Lots of toy shops in Chinatown

Prices are notably cheaper here than other parts of the city, of course haggling is expected. 🙂

Absolutely amazing

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok offers a breathtaking view of this wonderful city. Perched on the 56th floor at Centara Grand Hotel on top of Central World shopping Mall.

Bistro and bar

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

A huge wines selection at the bistro which occupies the entire 55th floor, both indoor and outdoor dining sections to choose from, and the solely outdoor bar deck of the 56th floor wraps around the circular core of the building providing an uninterrupted 360 degree panorama of the amazing Bangkok metropolis.

Happy hour is 5 to 7 pm

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Buy one get one free is a good deal as the price as you would expect at such a venue is rather high. A Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 so getting 2 for 1 is a good deal.

After happy hour finishes

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

Well that’s another story, some friends turned up and Lisa from Townsville was drinking champagne which turned out to be B1,100 per glass, which equals $42 AUD or $30 USD. Now that’s not really a problem but her and her friend John left without paying, subsequently Greg, the little guy in the middle got stuck with a huge drink bill. 🙂

Enough of that, back to the amazing view.

Red Sky Bar Bangkok

The Baiyoke tower is 85 stories and is the tallest building in Bangkok, it includes the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh-tallest all-hotel structure in the world.

Game changer

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

MahaNakhon is a luxury mixed-use skyscraper currently under construction in the Silom/Sathon central business area of Bangkok. Designed to fit into the Thai landscape with a unique pixelated facade, it will have the unconventional appearance of a glass curtain walled square tower with a cuboid-surfaced spiral cut into the side of the building. Upon its estimated completion in 2015, it will become the tallest building in Bangkok at 314 metres (1,030 ft), with 77 floors. Featuring hotel, retail and residences, 200 units of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok inside the building are priced between around US$1,100,000 to US$17,000,000, making it one of the most expensive condominiums in Bangkok.
