Wongamat & Cosy Beach Pattaya

Wongamat & Cosy Beach Pattaya  are located north & south of the main Pattaya beach and offer far better conditions than the very busy and noisy Pattaya beach. There are no noisy speedboats taking people para sailing and to the islands so it is much easier to relax and enjoy the warm waters of the gulf of Thailand.

Hi rise condos at Wongamat.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

There are some huge condos and hotels at both locations, so if you want a more peaceful environment pick one of these relaxing places. I prefer Wongamat as it is much easier to visit the the Pattaya action plus there are many more restaurants and bars close by.

Many new condos at Wongamat

Cosy Beach Pattaya

There is an explosion of new high-rise condominiums overlooking Wongamat beach.

Centara Grand Mirage hotel Wongamat.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

The Centara is one of the many luxury five star hotels in Pattaya, the grounds here are like the lost city of Atlantis.

Centara is perfect for families as there are lots of pools to keep the children occupied.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

My favourite bar is the Beach Club at the Pullman Hotel in Wongamat, here is my Australian friend Nathan Corbett relaxing with a cool drink. Nathan has held 10 World titles for Muay Thai kickboxing in 3 separate weight divisions. He likes to come to Pattaya and train at Fairtex gym on Pattaya north rd.

Beach Club at Wongamat.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

I think this is the best spot in Pattaya to watch the magnificent sunsets while sipping a half price cocktail at happy hour, between 5pm and 7pm every day.

As good as any place in the world for beautiful sunsets.

Nice view at the Beach Club.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

There always seems to be something nice to look at when you visit the Beach Club.

Excellent view at Cosy Beach also.  🙂

Cosy Beach Pattaya

There is no doubt about it, these Russian girls at Cosy Beach Pattaya have given us guys more incentive to go to the beach.

Cosy Beach Pattaya is beside the Royal Cliff hotel.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

The Royal Cliff was the hotel I stayed in on my first visit in 1980.

Cosy Beach & Royal Cliff hotel.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

The Royal Cliff has an elevator to take guests down to the beach.

Cosy Beach Pattaya gets crowded in the high season.

Cosy Beach Pattaya

Things have changed somewhat in these days, firstly the huge numbers of Russian tourists are not coming due to the crash of the Rouble, and secondly the food outlets have been removed due to orders from the Navy who control the area. Very few people come here now.

 Cosy Beach Pattaya.

Rio di Janeiro Carnival

October 8, 2013 by David Herd

The greatest show on Earth.

Rio di Janeiro Carnival

Rio di Janeiro Carnival

Rio di Janeiro Carnival worlds sexiest show,  it is really the greatest show on Earth. I was at the Sambadrome in 1999 and 2005, then I celebrated Carnival at a Bloco in Ipanema in 2008. I was way up in the bleachers in 1999 so in 2005 I paid about $500 to have a front row seat. Therefore I have been fortunate enough to have experienced Carnival from 3 different aspects.

Happy dragon at Sambadrome.

Carnival worlds sexiest show

The Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí is center stage of Rio Carnival, the host venue of the annual parade of Samba Schools. It is important to note that Rio Carnival, popularized around the world as the greatest party on the planet,is about much more than drinking and partying. At its heart, Carnival is an exhilarating combination of competition and camaraderie as organizations called Samba Schools battle for the title of Rio Carnival Samba Parade Champions. For Cariocas, the local residents of Rio de Janeiro, is a time to show the world the product of a year’s worth of hard work and dedication. All the magic of Rio Carnival — the beats, songs, dances, floats and costumes — are the product of well-orchestrated machines called Samba Schools.

Rio Carnival floats are spectacular.

Rio di Janeiro Carnival

A samba school (Portuguese: Escola de samba) is a club or dancing school. They practice and often perform in huge square-compounds (“quadras de samba”) devoted to practicing and exhibiting samba, an African-Brazilian dance. The schools are traditionally associated with a particular neighbourhood, often shanty towns (“favela”). Throughout the year the samba schools have various happenings and events, most important of which are rehearsals for the main event which is the yearly carnival.

Another beautiful float.

Rio di Janeiro Carnival

The parades during carnival are a showcase of each “escola” enhanced by the participation of celebrities, fans and guests who often pay large sums of money for their costumes.  Each school displays glamour in colorful costumes and floats with special effects and is organized into different segments or “alas”. The “alas” represent different components of the school’s theme, or “enredo”, as they act out a homage to a myth, historic event or figure, or express their view on a social, environmental or international issue. The “alas” display distinct costumes or “fantasias” and also reflect traditional samba school roles developed years ago.

Thus, each samba school parade has the “comissao de frente“; individuals who open the parade by walking in social attires, saluting the crowds; the “ala das Baianas”, or the traditional segment of Bahian African-Brazilian ladies with impressive round dresses spinning through the avenue; the “puxadores” (lead singers) singing the “samba-enredo” or theme-song while they play the “cavaquinho” or other string instruments; the “velha guarda,” or veterans who made history in the school; the “bateria”, or samba band with drums, “cuicas” and other instruments, preceded by the “madrinha da bateria”, or band godmother who is often a sexy female celebrity. The “porta-bandeira”, or the female flag holder, and the “meste-sala”, or male cortsy, display and salute the school’s flag, as they dance and strive to show harmony and samba expertise, as their performance is carefully observed and scored by the judges.

Havana Cuba great city for music

October 4, 2013 by David Herd

Havana Cuba great city for music.

Havana Cuba great city

Havana Cuba great city for music, one of my most vivid memories is visiting many Havana bars which were empty when we walked in to order a beer, then withing one minute a 5 or 6 piece band would appear and start playing incredible latin music. After a few songs they would try to sell you their CD, then we would move on to the next bar and the whole process would be repeated. The amazing thing is the fact they were all so good.

Please forgive the poor quality of my photos, it was 2001 and one of my first digital cameras which left a lot to be desired.

In every bar there was a new band.

Havana Cuba great city

Before the Communist revolution, Havana was one of the vacation hot-spots of the Caribbean, and since Cuba reopened to tourism in the 1990s, it has become a popular destination once again, albeit with many fewer U.S. citizens, due to an almost total ban on travel maintained by the U.S. federal government. However, there will be lots of tourists at any time of year, so expect huge crowds and long lines in places.

Hotel Nacional de Cuba

Havana Cuba great city

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a historic luxury hotel located on the Malecón in the middle of Vedado, Havana, Cuba. It stands on Taganana hill a few metres from the sea, and offers a view of Havana Harbour, the seawall and the city. The hotel was built on the site of the Santa Clara Battery, which dates back to 1797. Part of the battery has been preserved in the hotel’s gardens, including two large coastal guns dating from the late 19th Century. There is also a small museum there featuring the 1962 Cuban missile crisis. During the crisis, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara set up their headquarters there to prepare the defence of Havana from aerial attack.

The Hotel Nacional de Cuba is a World Heritage Site and a National Monument, among its first illustrious guests were artists, actors, athletes and writers such as Frank Sinatra, Ava Gardner, Mickey Mantle, Johnny Weissmuller, Buster Keaton, Jorge Negrete, Agustín Lara, Rocky Marciano, Tyrone Power, Rómulo Gallegos, Errol Flynn, John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Marlon Brando and Ernest Hemingway. The hotel’s reputation is backed by patrons such as Winston Churchill, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, scientist Alexander Flemming, and innumerable Ibero-American Heads of State and European monarchs. Minnesota (United States) Governor Jesse Ventura stayed at the hotel while visiting Cuba on a trade mission in 2002. (From Wikipedia)

Fidel Castro.

Havana Cuba great city

The illegitimate son of a wealthy farmer, Fidel Castro adopted leftist anti-imperialist politics while studying law at the University of Havana. After participating in rebellions against right-wing governments in the Dominican Republic and Colombia, he planned the overthrow of the United States-backed military junta of Cuban president Fulgencio Batista, and served a year’s imprisonment in 1953 after a failed attack on the Moncada Barracks. On release he traveled to Mexico, where he formed a revolutionary group with his brother Raúl and friend Che Guevara, the 26th of July Movement. Returning to Cuba, Castro led the Cuban Revolution which ousted Batista in 1959, and brought his own assumption of military and political power. Alarmed by his revolutionary credentials and friendly relations with the Soviet Union, the U.S. governments of Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy unsuccessfully attempted to remove him, by economic blockade, assassination and counter-revolution, including the Bay of Pigs invasion of 1961. Countering these threats, Castro formed an economic and military alliance with the Soviets, and allowed them to place nuclear weapons on the island, sparking the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.

Fidel Castro & Che Guevara.

Havana Cuba great city

After seizing power changes to state wages were implemented; judges and politicians had their pay reduced while low-level civil servants saw theirs raised. In March 1959, Castro ordered rents for those who paid less than $100 a month halved, with measures implemented to increase the Cuban people’s purchasing powers; productivity decreased and the country’s financial reserves were drained within two years. Although refusing to categorise his regime as socialist and repeatedly denying being a communist, Castro appointed Marxists to senior government and military positions; most notably Che Guevara became Governor of the Central Bank and then Minister of Industries.  Appalled, Air Force commander Pedro Luis Díaz Lanz defected to the U.S.

Stayed a night with a local family.

Havana Cuba great city

A couple of hours north of Havana we stayed a night in this Cuban  guys house, He was an engineer &  his wife an architect, their wage was $15 USD a month while the police and army personnel received $40 USD per month so it’s easy to see how Castro kept control. They had adult children living in America and only one of them at a time was allowed to leave Cuba to visit the children.

Coco taxi.

Havana Cuba great city

Coco Taxis and yellow three wheel motorbikes are a cheap way of getting around central Havana.

Camel bus discontinued in 2008.

Havana Cuba great city

Havana used to have a public transportation service called the El Camello, a split-level bus pulled by a semi-truck, and resembling a 2 humped camel (thus the name). Camellos finished operation in April 2008 and were replaced by modern city busses imported from China.

Many wonderful old buildings.

This city really has a lay-back atmosphere, & the people are extremely friendly.

El Capitolio, or National Capitol Building Havana

Havana Cuba great city

El Capitolio, or National Capitol Building in Havana, Cuba, was the seat of government in Cuba until after the Cuban Revolution in 1959, and is now home to the Cuban Academy of Sciences. “El Capitolio” has a size of 681 by 300 ft. Its design and name recall the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., but it is only superficially similar. Completed in 1929, it was the tallest building in Havana until the 1950s and houses the world’s third largest indoor statue.

The good news is, as of January 2014 Cubans can now buy motor vehicles, the bad news is they don’t have the money to do it. Average wage is $20 per month.

Here is my favorite Cuban song by Celia Cruz, a wonderful artist who Castro would not let back in the country for many years. In 2008 I saw the Broadway show about her life, called Celia. The following is from Wikipedia, Úrsula Hilaria Celia de la Caridad Cruz Alfonso de la Santísima Trinidad (October 21, 1925 – July 16, 2003) was a Cuban-American salsa performer. One of the most popular salsa artists of the 20th century, she earned twenty-three gold albums and was renowned internationally as the “Queen of Salsa” as well as “La Guarachera de Cuba.  She spent much of her career living in New Jersey, and working in the United States and several Latin American countries. Leila Cobo of Billboard Magazine once said “Cruz is indisputably the best known and most influential female figure in the history of Cuban music.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

Always something to see in Pattaya Beach

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach, that is an understatement, this post is dedicated to showing you some of the weird and amusing things I come across nearly every day. The drainage system in Pattaya and most of Thailand is no match for the torrential Tropical storms. However as you can see in the photo above it does not deter the dedicated local beer drinkers.

Here is my live webcam from my balcony overlooking Pattaya beach in Thailand.

Nothing stops the Baht bus.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya

This was taken in Pattaya south rd in front of Tukcom.

Houston, we have a problem.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya

Two weeks ago a section of the new footpath on Beach rd collapsed due to the storms. They laid new concrete and repaired it, then planted two large palm trees. I guess the Thais think concrete sets hard immediately, (in reality it takes 28 days) however the weight of the palms was too much for the new base with is only about 2.5 inches thick. Well the picture tells the story, “BANG, CRASH, BOOM,” back to where they started.

Here is an update, the same section just collapsed again for the 3rd time.

After the storm.

Not a pretty sight.

Chick Magnet

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

He waltzed into town and sent all the local girls into a frenzy.

OK, Ok, I realise you need to see more.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

I think he was only in town for a week or two, who knows how many hearts he broke when he left?

Always something to see on Beach Rd.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

I walk down beach road every morning and there is always something unusual to see, hansum man? I don’t think so. 🙂

I’m not sure how far this guy travels with these baby pigs in the 30 degree heat, I just think packing them in ice may be a good idea.

While on the subject of pigs

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

Here is  typical Thai street kitchen roasting a pig, he sells portions for 100 Baht or $3. If the police tell him to move he will simply set up around the corner.  😆

Two are better than one.

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

Too many roast pigs is never enough.

Not another roast pig?

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

As you have guessed by now roast pork is hugely popular in Thailand, in fact every time someone in a beer bar has a birthday you can be certain a huge pig will be roasting on the spit to celebrate.

Thai people will eat anything

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

These are bugs, grubs & grasshoppers, I have never been brave enough to sample them.

I have a suggestion for the Thai tourist authority, many tourists, particularly from China don’t understand & are confused by highly skilled complex whistle blowing. A 20 minute lesson at the airport on arrival would clear up this confusion. 🙂

Strange amusing sights Pattaya Beach

No, this has not been photo-shopped, it’s a real person, it’s our resident lunatic John Martin aka Pothole. I have known him for over 20 years and in that time have noticed the gradual deterioration in his erratic behaviour. He probably provides a large % of my entertainment here in Pattaya, which is much appreciated. In many ways he is a role model, the antithesis of everything you do not want to be or become. 😆

Think about this scenario, earlier this year after receiving his well deserved reward for Thailand’s “most dysfunctional family” I imagine Pothole Martin could give this interview to the the local paper;

Long before I abandoned all hope I had a dream that one of my sons would compete in the Olympics. I never new what sport would suit until the birth of my youngest child. Recently when I heard that “crying & screaming” was to be included in in the Tokyo Olympics and I knew my time had come.

I have actually been training young Tyrone since birth, his mother & I spent up to 5 hours each day screaming at each other knowing this would form a vital part of his future personality. We knew we had a winner from the moment his slipped out of his mother’s hands and fell on his head on the concrete floor, his piercing screams all the way to the hospital inspired me to continue his training.

I am well qualified to coach him as I have cried in front of detectives at North Sydney police station in Australia on a number of occasions, and have screamed in many of Pattaya’s top hotels & restaurants. Please also remember that being irresponsible is not as easy as I make it out to be.

Finally, you are most welcome to view my training sessions, just meet me at any shopping center when I have the children with me, or better still ride in the car while they are in the back shrieking & screaming at a championship level.

I have recently developed a very good “low impact” training exercise called “weeping and whaling”, I use it on a daily basis in front of my bathroom mirror each morning. For some reason the image staring back at me tends to encourage both the weeping and the whaling.

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

September 30, 2013 by David Herd

João Fernandinho Beach Buzios

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil, are resort towns  located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2012, the Buzios population consisted of 23,463 inhabitants and its area of 69 km². Today, Búzios is a popular getaway from the city and a worldwide tourist site, especially among Brazilians and Argentinians. In the early 1900s  Búzios was popular with the Carioca’s high society, who wanted to escape from the chaotic city life of Rio de Janeiro and enjoy over 23 beaches that the peninsula offers. But it wasn’t until 1964, when the famous French Actress Brigitte Bardot visited Búzios, that it grew to be a popular tourist destination.  (From Wikipedia)

One of 23 beautiful beaches.

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

During the 16th century, the Tupinanbás Indians occupied the area, which is now known as Búzios. During the 17th century, the Europeans invaded what was then a small village and as a result, the Tupinanbás developed strict relationships with the French pirates and smugglers, who were interested in smuggling pau-brasil (famous Brazilian reddish wood) and selling African Slaves. Eventually the French were expelled by the Portuguese due to their bloody disputes with the Tupinambás, which resulted in a significant decrease in the Indian population in that region. (From Wikipedia)

Buzios

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

Búzios is located at 105 miles NE from the city of Rio de Janeiro, about a 2 hour drive from that city. You come to a fork in the road, straight ahead for Cabo Frio and left for Buzios.

Buzios was made famous by Brigitte Bardot.

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

Brigitte Bardot was a famous French Actress in the 1960s that decided to go to Rio with her Brazilian boyfriend, Bob Zagury. However due to the intense amount of paparazzi following them, Bob took his girlfriend to Búzios in order to enjoy the rest of their trip in a quieter and more exclusive site. At the time, the small town had no electricity and life there was quite bucolic yet it was the simplicity of the place, in conjunction with the peninsula’s natural beauty, that made Brigitte Bardot fall in love and declare her admiration for the small fishing village. Inevitably, Búzios became a global spotlight and although other famous stars like Mick Jagger and Madonna followed her path, none left such an impression as Bardot did.

Cabo Frio.

Buzios Cabo Frio Brazil

Cabo Frio is a popular beach destination which draws a lot of beach goers and surfers from around the state, as well as the neighboring landlocked state of Minas Gerais. It was founded in the 16th Century, after the Portuguese chased the French away from the area, and remained small for most of its history. In recent years, with the income from the growing tourism industry and the influx of retired folks from Rio de Janeiro, it has grown to a city of over 185,000, with a wide range of amenities for the traveller.

Koh Larn Island is close to Pattaya

September 27, 2013 by David Herd

Here is my live webcam from my balcony overlooking Pattaya beach in Thailand.

Koh Larn Island

Koh Larn Island

Koh Larn Island is close to Pattaya, in fact it is only 35 minutes by ferry from Bali Hai Wharf at the end off  Walking St. Many people take the speedboats every morning from Pattaya beach, they cost between 1,500 and 2,500 Baht depending on the size of the boat.

Pattaya City sign

Koh Larn Island

I guess Pattaya wanted to be like the Hollywood of Asia.

Thousands head for Koh Larn.

Koh Larn Island

Every morning thousands of Chinese tourists head for Koh Larn.

Dolphin seafood restaurant.

Koh Larn Island

As we get under way we pass the Dolphin seafood restaurant which doesn’t look too impressive in daylight but when lit up at night it is quite spectacular. One the right overlooking the bay is the Pattaya Hilton.

Royal Cliff Hotel.

Koh Larn Island

Looking to the left or Port to be more accurate we see the Royal Cliff Hotel, it opened in 1974 & in fact was where I stayed on my first visit to Pattaya in 1980. Look closely and you will see the elevator that takes you down to Cosy beach.

Behind the ferry is Royal Cliff hotel.

Koh Larn Island

Please always make sure you have a life jacket close by.

Koh Krok.

Koh Larn Island

Koh Krok is a small island about 8 km off Koh Larn, popular for diving and snorkeling.

Ferries go to both sides of the island, Tawaen beach is on the other side.

The crowd arrives.

B30 is great value for the 40 minute trip.

Tawaen Beach.

Koh Larn Island

Every morning on Pattaya beach thousand of tourists, mainly Chinese (some Indians) climb aboard at least one hundred speedboats and head for Koh Larn. There is one place on Koh Larn where they all gather like lemmings, Tawaen Beach. They really should change the name to China beach, they are all here crammed together like sardines, but I guess if you come from China you are used to crowds.

Thousands of Chinese tourists visit every day. They travel by speedboat not by ferry.

Unless you are completely crazy and love being swallowed up by thousands of Chinese tourists, walk 5 minutes around the corner to a much quieter and more peaceful Sangwan beach.

Hua Hin popular resort

September 25, 2013 by David Herd

Nice town south of Bangkok

Hua Hin popular resort

Hua Hin popular resort

Hua Hin popular resort combines the attractions of a modern holiday destination with the charm and fascination of a still active fishing port. While most other Thai holiday destinations cater mainly to foreign tourists, Hua Hin Thai resort is a holiday destination for foreigners and Thais.

Besides it’s great 5 mile long beach Hua Hin provides the highest density of world class golf courses anywhere in Thailand while it’s yet virtually undiscovered as an international Golf destination. Green-fees and other costs are currently among the lowest in the world while course maintenance and services are superb.

Hilton Hua Hin Thai resort

Hua Hin popular resort

In 1928, the late King Rama VII built Klai Kangwon Palace which remains until this today an official royal residence. It is still frequently used by members of the royal family and is open to the public for visits.

Hua Hin Thai resort continued to develop in its own leisurely way, with the added attraction of an 18-hole golf course, and as a fishing port. The Railway Hotel, today’s Sofitel Central Hua Hin, was built by the State Railways of Thailand in 1923 in the architectural style of old Siam.

Many of Bangkok’s rich and famous built their own beachfront summer homes to the north and south along the curving sandy bay, enjoying leisurely family weekends in a resort which has maintained its unique identity.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand.

September 19, 2013 by David Herd

Songkran April madness.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand, the festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year’s Day from 13 to 15 April. It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia. Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from an Indian festival. It is now observed nationwide, even in the far south. However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it continues for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for immersion in another culture.

Songkran bazooka.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Songkran is scheduled to last 2 days which would be entertaining, however in Pattaya and some other areas the madness goes on for 8 or 9 days. For us locals that is 5 days too long, so we either stay indoors most of the time or take a holiday away from Thailand. Otherwise every time you step out your door you get soaked.

Are you feeling lucky punk?

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

I really love the the “don’t mess with me” look this guy has on his face.  👿

Dressed for the fight.

Songkran is so much fun for everybody young and old. Often however there is ice in the water which can kind of sting when it hits you.

Resting before the battle.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Troops must always try to rest before the battle begins, any footpath will do. Sadly there will be casualties.  😆

On the hunt in Beach Road.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

No one is safe, lucky April the the hottest month of the year in Thailand, the best thing you can do is wear some old clothes and prepared to be soaked.

My friends join in the fun.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Here are my friends Justine, Nui & Macca joining in the fun.

The kids reload.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

As you can imagine the kids think it is the greatest time of the year. Here they are reloading their guns.

You can run but you can’t hide.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Nowhere are you safe from being soaked, as you can see the main form of transport in Pattaya are the Baht buses, and they have open sides and become prime targets for the predators.

Thai people love Songkran.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

For Thai people it is such a happy joyful time of the year, I feel rather guilty for not being a great supporter, well that’s not entirely true, I would love Songkran if it only lasted for 2 or 3 days.

Bacardi Breezer promotion.

Here we have the ultimate wet tee-shirt celebration. The Bacardi Breezer promotion always has lots of gorgeous girls getting soaked.

Beautiful Thai girls having fun.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Move baby move, get in the grove now.

Sexy Thai girls celebrate Songkran in Beach Rd Pattaya Thailand, April 19.

Shake it baby shake it!

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Well I know I am repeating myself but Thai people really love Songkran, plus thousands of travellers from all parts of the world come here to join the fun, why don’t you?

The fun police are here.

Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand

Here are the cops making sure nobody goes overboard, I have never seen these uniforms before, I think they are military police from the navel base. If you want to communicate with them I suggest you learn some Thai.

Thanks for visiting my Songkran madness Pattaya Thailand photo blog, I’m looking forward to Songkran 2017.

Belem Amazon Gateway Brazil

Fresh fish in Belem.

Belem Amazon Gateway Brazil

Belem Amazon Gateway Brazil

Belem Amazon Gateway Brazil which represents more than half the planet’s remaining rain forests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rain-forest in the world. Founded in 1616 by the Kingdom of Portugal, Belém was the first European colony on the Amazon but did not become part of Brazil until 1775. The newer part of the city has modern buildings and skyscrapers. The colonial portion retains the charm of tree-filled squares, churches and traditional blue tiles. The city has a rich history and architecture from colonial times. Recently it witnessed a skyscraper boom.

Ancient fishing boats.

All the fishing boats at the docks make it a fascinating area to wander around and soak up the atmosphere, you get the feeling nothing has changed here for centuries.

Old man of the sea.

Can you imagine how many years this old man has been standing here on the wharf casting his net into the river?

The banks of the mighty Amazon.

Belem Amazon Gateway Brazil

Naturally I took an interesting river tour along the mighty river to add to my river bucket list which includes the Nile, The Mississippi, the Mekong and the Murray. Most of the city seemed old and ancient with many old rusting boats of all shapes and sizes lining the waterfront. However according to Wikipedia Belem has it witnessed a skyscraper boom, which is a shame. Here is a video clip of two Brazilian dancers on the cruise.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

September 12, 2013 by David Herd

Welcome to Koh Chang

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang I first visited 10 years ago & I wanted to see whether there were many changes on this lovely island. This jetty is the first thing you see upon arrival, then after a 10 minute hilly drive down the west coast you arrive at White Sands Beach.

It really has not changed much since I was there in 2003.

Ferry was a rust bucket.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

The ferry service is very good, 1/2 an hour across the water and only 280 Baht or $9 for our SUV & 2 people. Lots of drinks & snacks on board as well. For those without a vehicle there are busses waiting to take you to your hotel.

White Sands Beach Koh Chang

White Sands Beach Koh Chang

In many ways Koh Chang reminds me of Koh Samui 15 years ago. I used to love Koh Samui in the 90’s but the more it developed the more the attraction faded. That is until I returned in 2015 and found Chaweng had much more to offer with restaurants, bars & shopping centres.

Pool at the Kacha Resort.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

The Kacha Resort was a great place to stay, close to lots of restaurants and bars and probably one of the best hotel rooms I have ever stayed in. This time I lived up to my name, the Five Star Vagabond. Here is a short video showing some details of this terrific hotel.

Use THIS LINK for a great room rate.

Nong Bug restaurant.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

This Thai seafood restaurant with the great name was the busiest in White Sands Beach by a long way. To us that meant the food was fresh because of the turnover. The price was low and the food excellent.

Street market White Sands Beach.

White Sands Beach Koh Chang

All the usual stuff is on sale at the street markets, a sexy ladies bikini can be bought for 250 Baht or $8. Naturally you are expected to haggle.

Genuine reproductions here.

There are many art shops in Thailand where you can have your favourite painting copied for a very low cost, want a Picasso? Well this guy will paint you one.  😳

Happy beach vendors.

White Sands Beach Koh Chang

The beach vendors here are a happy bunch, lots of bracelets, and goodies for 50 to 100 Baht.

Amari Emerald Cove hotel Koh Chang.

White Sands Beach Koh Chang

The Amari Hotel Emerald Cove is quite an amazing property, absolute luxury. It is on the beach and has the biggest swimming pool I have ever seen in a hotel. If you want to spoil yourself this could be the place for you.

La Dolce Vita.

dd4f2d6d-48e0-4ed9-bb46-d37ec38ee16b

La Dolce Vita is a very good Italian restaurant in White Sands Beach, the staff are friendly and the food is good. The owner hails from Milan and knows how to make a very good pizza.

Caught up with the owner

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

A happy Italian who serves up good food.

Beautiful Coconut Beach.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

Just 6 kms south of White Sands Beach is Coconut Beach, a beautiful almost deserted stretch of white sand where the water is clean and calm. A number of resorts are here for those who prefer a quieter more peaceful environment. The Coconut Beach Resort is one worth considering.

Coconut Beach Resort.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

Much quieter than White Sands Beach, and a much nicer stretch of sand, I imagine it would be an ideal honeymoon destination.

Koh Chang sunset.

White Sands Beach Koh-Chang

Koh Chang is famous for beautiful sunsets, I never get tired of watching the sun set in the west. My next Thai island adventure will probably be a return to Koh Samui.

In fact I went back to Koh Samui in June 2016, & was pleased to see it has improved out of sight.
