Fat Coco A-One Hotel

July 24, 2021 by David Herd

Fat Coco A-One Hotel

Fat Coco A-One Hotel

Fat Coco A-One Hotel is a rather unsusual name, I have no idea what it means or what it stands for. Having said all that I was able to follow the entire building process from my balcony on the 21st floor of Markland Condo. The shot above was how it used to look before somebody decided to spoil what was an attractive unusual landmark on Beach Road.

OK, lets do it.

Fat Coco A-One HotelThis particular construction started on the 31st of January 2021.

January 19 2021

Fat Coco A-One HotelWhat a great view from my balcony, I have lived in Markland for 10 years.

Up come the tiles

Fat Coco A-One Hotel

Next job is the demolish the beautiful swimming pool. This is what I call a very cunning plan. ๐Ÿ™‚

After all, who needs a nice pool at a Beach resort?

Fat Coco A-One Hotel

Far greater minds than I know the answer. ๐Ÿ™‚

Now we are getting somewhere

Fat Coco A-One HotelI have always been of the belief, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. That logic certainly does not apply here. ๐Ÿ™‚

What a fabulous locating

Fat Coco A-One HotelPattaya beach in all it’s glory.

Those trees have to go.

Fat Coco A-One HotelReplace them with concrete please. ๐Ÿ™‚

Bring in the excavators

Fat Coco A-One HotelThose palms will be “gone baby gone”.

Fat Coco A-One Hotel February 23rd 2021

Fat Coco A-One HotelAs you can see progress is being made.

Thats my condo in the background

Fat Coco A-One HotelI get an excellent view of the renovation from the 21st floor.

We need some bamboo

Fat Coco A-One Hotel

Bamboo will certainly enhanse the tropical theme. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pattaya Beach

Fat Coco A-One HotelRight across the road is Pattaya Beach.

The finished product

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

July 2, 2021 by David Herd

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya offers an extensive menu for Thai & western food at a price which is hard to beat. I remember a few years ago when you could buy a bottle of Aussie red for only B400 or $16 AUD, which is a good price in Thailand. Of course now in June 2021 with the Covid-19 crisis alcohol is not available in restaurants.

Very good selection of food

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Tripadvisor ranked #331 of 1407 restaurants in Pattaya.

The avocado is my favourite

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

I had lunch there yeserday July 1st 2021 & sadly there was no avocado.

So I settled for a hamburger & desert

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

The burger was very good & only cost B85, or $3.50 AUD.

Penty of calories here I’m afraid. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

The crepe suzette was also was only B85.

Sausages mash & gravy

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

After you finish this I guarantee you won’t be hungry anymore. ๐Ÿ™‚

Club sandwich

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Good value as usual. ๐Ÿ™‚

On 2nd thoughts

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

There is always room for some icecream ๐Ÿ™‚

Meatballs & gravy

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

So many choices & such little time. ๐Ÿ™‚

Phad Thai

Pad Thai and mango and sticky rice, a perfect lunch. B225 or $9.50 AUD including a 10% tip.

Mango & sticky rice

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

A taste sensation. ๐Ÿ™‚

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

Dinner with my two friends, Hamish Elton, a Queenslander who lives in Pattaya & Dave Elder, a Queenslander visiting on holiday in 2017. I remember very well, prior to dinner we had drinks at Retox Game On which sadly has now closed due to Covid-19. Anyhow on one of the many TVs we saw a terrific game of Australian Rules football, my team the Sydney Swans narrowly beat Essendon in an absolute thriller. ๐Ÿ™‚

Make sure you visit mathilda

Mathilda restaurant Pattaya

This is certainly a very good restaurant with excellent Thai & western food at the right price.

Foodland low cost breakfast

June 28, 2021 by David Herd

Foodland low cost breakfast

Foodland low cost breakfast

Foodland low cost breakfast is the best value in Pattaya & Bangkok, only B65 or $2.70 AUD. This low price is available everyday between 6.30 & 9.30 am. I’m a regular at the Terminal 21 branch in Pattaya.

Very busy prior to Covid-19.

Foodland low cost breakfast

Now due to Covid customers are way down. Often there are only 6 or 7 other people there beside me.

Modern open kitchen.

Foodland low cost breakfast

One thing is for sure, currently with so few customers the breakfast arrives in record time. ๐Ÿ™‚

OK, here it is.

Foodland low cost breakfast

Includes orange juice, toast & jam & tea or coffee.

Scrambled eggs this morning

Foodland low cost breakfast

They were excellent. One thing to remember, right now it’s a little difficult to get to the branch at Terminal 21 before the mall opens due to a new carpark being built. You must enter from the back road.

Next door to the restaurant is a supermarket

Foodland low cost breakfast

I often do my shopping after breakfast, sadly however it’s too early to buy booze but 5 minutes down Pattaya Nua is the wholesale part of Best supermarket. ๐Ÿ™‚ See more  about this market by following THIS LINK.

An excellent deli

Fabulous Foodland Terminal 21 Pattaya

The supermarket has an excellent deli with a hugh selection of cold meats.

Pattaya Klang branch

Best Pattaya breakfast coffee service

Located 200 meters north of Big C, sit at the counter if there is a spare seat. ๐Ÿ™‚

Menu

Foodland low cost breakfast

The restaurant is actually called Took Lae Dee, they have a large food selection, my apologies for the blured menu. For lunch one day I had the Oxtail Stew which was excellent.

Many thanks for visiting my Foodland low cost breakfast photo blog, if saving money is your aim this is the place to go.

Living with Covid-19

June 25, 2021 by David Herd

Living with Covid-19

Living with Covid-19

Living with Covid-19 in the first six months of 2021 makes me feel like I am just treading water. It many ways life is good, it’s very peaceful in Pattaya without tourists. The downside is not being able to travel & having friends & family who can’t visit me in Thailand.

In fact for the last year or so it feels like I have just been treading water.

A surprise addition to Pattaya

Living with Covid-19

This monster is parked adjacent to Soi 6, plans are to turn it into a tourist food destination. Progress has stopped due to Covid.

Good value in Soi Buakhao

Living with Covid-19

A big renovation has been in progress for the last six months, however I think the original looked much better.

This mob just like to spend a ton of money unnecessarily. ๐Ÿ™‚

New hotel between Soi 2 & Soi 3

Living with Covid-19

There is no hurry to finish this project as Thailand’s hotel industry has been devastated by Covid-19. In May & June the average occupancy rate is only 6%.

Food handouts for the Thai people

Food for Pattaya peopleSadly there are many people struggling to survive in the pandemic, daily food handouts are a great help for them.

OK, I’m ready for the next 6 months. ๐Ÿ™‚

Living with Covid-19

Lets hope by Xmas Thai & Australian borders will be open.

It’s very sad to see so many businesses close their doos due to Covid-19, please see more on THIS LINK.

Cheap Charlie’s Pattaya Restaurant

Cheap Charlie’s Pattaya Restaurant

Cheap Charlie's Pattaya Restaurant

Cheap Charlie’s Pattaya Restaurant is located in busy Soi Buakhao next door to the Sutus Court Hotel. Tripadvisor give it a rating of #386 of 1,105 Restaurants in Pattaya.

This is their small breakfast

Cost of living Thailand

Probably one of the cheapest in Pattaya, only B89 or $4.84 AUD including tear or coffee. The bacon was excellent compared to other low cost breakfasts I have had in recent times.

Daily specials

Cheap Charlie's Pattaya Restaurant

Some very interesting choices here at very good prices, no wonder it’s one of Pattaya’s most popular restaurants.

Outdoor area

Cheap Charlie's Pattaya Restaurant

I guess some people like being outside, personally I can do without the exhaust fumes from busy Soi Buakhao. ๐Ÿ™‚

Other choices

Cheap Charlie's Pattaya Restaurant

Voted number one in 2020. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cost of living Thailand

June 22, 2021 by David Herd

Cost of living Thailand

Cost of living Thailand

Cost of living Thailand compared to Australia is is quite surprising. As a rough estimate it is around 35% lower in Pattaya which is a beachside city 90 minutes south of Bangkok. I will highlight some examples including services which I would not be able to afford in Australia, such as pedicures & massages. ๐Ÿ™‚

Cheap Charlies is a good example, breakfast starts at B89 or $4.84 AUD including tea or coffee.

Cheap Charlies

Cost of living Thailand

Located in Soi Buakhao beside the Sutus Court Hotel.

Cha Bear coffee

Cost of living Thailand

Diagonally across the road from Cheap Charlies & opposite Sutris Court Hotel, a hot coffee latte is only B40, or $1.68 AUD.

I love a foot massage

Cost of living Thailand

Normal price in Pattaya is B200 for 1 hour, or $8.40 AUD, I usually leave a B60 tip.

Some parlours in Pattaya Klang have slashed their price to B100, or $4.20 AUD.

Cost of living Thailand

The Covid crisis has forced may to close their doors or offer a discount. This is one of them located near 3rd Rd. The average price in Australia is around $70 as opposed to $8.40.

If you want to spend a little more on breakfast

Cost of living Thailand

This is B175 or $7.36 AUD, naturally the 1/2 avocado & the smoked salmon is the reason at Robin Hood Tavern.

If you have trouble reaching your toes…..

Cost of living Thailand

A pedicure is definitely the answer for B150 or $6.30 AUD + tip.

The view from my studio apartment

Cost of living Thailand

Rent is B4,150 or $175 AUD per week, for a view like this in Sydney or the Gold Coast you would pay $500 t0 $600 per week.

Now an example of low cost living close the the action of Soi Buakhao

Cost of living Thailand

Air conditioned room with a sports bar & restaurant downstairs. B4,500 per month or $190 AUD.

Only 2 minutes walk to Cheap Charlies. ๐Ÿ™‚

CC

Great location for $44 AUD per week.

Low cost lunch in Pattaya Klang

Cost of living Thailand                  Cost of living Thailand

One of the many Chinese restaurants in Pattaya Klang or Central Road. Total cost including a bottle of water B240 or $10.90 AUD.

Massaman chicken curry at Robin Hood Tavern

Best Pattaya restaurants

Only B185 or $7.80 AUD, not only was it delicious I ordered take-away & got two full meals.

Transport in Pattaya

Cost of living Thailand

These Songthaews or Baht busses are a fantastic method of transport in Pattaya, there are hundreds of them, you rarely have to wait more than a minute. It’s hard to believe the cost of each ride is only B10, or 42 cents Australian. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great value at Jasmine’s Cafe in Pattaya Klang.

Best Pattaya restaurants

Breakfast, lunch & dinner, excellent good low cost food.

Prawn & broccoli at Jasmine.

Best Pattaya restaurants  Best Pattaya restaurants

Only B140 or $5.90 AUD, + breakfast at B119.

The best value breakfast in Pattaya.

Foodland low cost breakfast

Foodland at Terminal is the place to go if you are looking for a low cost breakfast,  only B65 or $2.70 AUD. This low price is available everyday between 6.30 & 9.30 am. Includes Tea or coffee, orange juice 7 toast & jam ๐Ÿ™‚

Sewing lady

Cost of living Thailand

These nice ladies set up on the footpath and repair anything that needs sewing. She fixed up a pair of shorts for me for 80 cents AUD, so I I gave her an extra 80 tip. You gotta love Thailand. ๐Ÿ™‚

April storm smashes Pattaya

April storm smashes Pattaya

April storm smashes Pattaya, In the 10 years I have lived here I think this was the most intense storm I have experienced. The thunder & lightning was unbelievable, I thought Armageddon had finally arrived.

There goes the beach

New pumps opposite Soi 6

April storm smashes Pattaya

The council are trying to control the storm damage to the beach.

These new pumps can’t handle the volume.

April storm smashes Pattaya

The best solution is to accept the inevitable damage & send in the excavators quickly to repair the damage.

And that’s what they did…..

April storm smashes Pattaya

The following morning on April 12 the cavalry arrived.

They need to retrieve a lot of sand

Aussie Expat Pattaya

Aussie Expat Pattaya

Aussie Expat Pattaya Thailand, my 10th year living the dream, life is very easy here & costs me around 40% compared with living in Australia. People often ask about the life here so I thought I would put some details together, at the end of the day a picture is worth a thousand words. ๐Ÿ™‚ The photo above is the view from my condo, I’m on the 20th floor of Markland which is one the corner of Beach Rd & Soi 1. I was paying B18,000 pm currently the rent has been discounted to B15,000 due to Covid 19.  This equals $625 AUD.

There will be lots of links in this post for you to follow to other blogs.

Warn atmosphere

The food and service is excellent, don’t let the location deter you, this is a very good restaurant.

I don’t suppose you can really call Thomas Shelby a cowboy, Birmingham is a long way from Texas. ๐Ÿ™‚

What about the food you ask?

Peaky Blinders Pattaya Restaurant

Sorry it took so long, on our first visit my old mate “Pothole” & I both had the corned beef which was very good but nothing like what we have in Australia. Both of us however thought the cabbage was the best we have ever tasted in our lives. This was the daily special at B350, or $14.80 AUD.

A week later we returned for the hamburgers

Pothole really enjoyed the Wagyu beef hamburger, however the real surprise packet were the sweet potato fries, absolutely delicious. Good value at B190 or $8 AUD.

For me it was the Wagyu sliders

Very good indeed even though I struggled a little to get through the three. ๐Ÿ™‚ Very good value at B175, or $7.40 AUD.

Shepherds Pie

The owner E.T. made 2 servings of Shepherds pie especially for Pothole & myself, it was absolutely delicious. I only ate 1/2 of mine & took the 2nd half home to eat tomorrow. Pothole of course not only ate the lot, but washed it down with 2 pints of Guinness which is a meal in itself. ๐Ÿ™‚

We have not tried this yet, I borrowed this photo & the one below from their website.

They open for breakfast as well.

Very convenient for those living in the building.

We certainly will return

There are lots of other dishes on the menu I want to try.

Having a party?

Peaky Blinders Pattaya Restaurant

Here is a great room for celebrating a birthday or a divorce, totally separate from the main room.

Terrific decor

A pensive Pothole

I just had to include a shot of Pothole, normally he doesn’t travel past Soi 6, but for the good food & service at Peaky Blinders he is happy to make an exception. ๐Ÿ™‚
