Good restaurants Vientiane Laos

April 17, 2019 by David Herd

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosGood restaurants Vientiane Laos and terrific coffee shops. You won’t go hungry in this nice city. I was with my friend from Australia Tony Murphy & we both really enjoyed the food & wide choice of restaurants.

Pimenton was one of the best.

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosTripAdvisor rate this establishment 6 out of 424 restaurants in Vientiane.

Tony chose duck prosciutto

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosVery tasty & well presented.

A vegetable side dish.

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos I can’t remember what it was, but it was certainly colourful. 🙂

I chose the pork ribs.

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos Very tender & tasty indeed.

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosRed wine & service was excellent & deserved it’s high rating.

Cafe Sinouk

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos Very good value here, I had a hamburger & 3 glasses of red wine for around $17 AUD.

Hamburger at Sinouk.

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosTo be fair it was not a great hamburger, I would rate it about 6.5 out of 10.

Excellent French food at L’Adress

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosA TripAdvisor rating of 18 out of 424 restaurants in Vientiane seemed too low to me. The food & service was excellent, I’m surprised it’s not in the top 10.

I chose the spinach soup as an entree.

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosVery good, I would rate it 8.5 out of 10.

Main course was beef liver.

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos Different to what I would normally order, however it was on the “specials list” at a very good price. Tasted fine & very French. 🙂

Caesar salad for Tony.

Good restaurants Vientiane Laos It tasted as good as it looks.

Escargot & scrambled eggs.

Good restaurants Vientiane LaosNow this is what I call a very interesting creation. 🙂

We stayed at the Bloom Boutique Hotel.

Bloom Boutique Hotel Vientiane I would like to recommend the Bloom Boutique Hotel, excellent rooms, friendly staff & a great breakfast. Use THIS LINK to book for a very good discount.

Thanks for visiting my Good restaurants Vientiane Laos photo blog. We took a taxi for an hour ($10 USD) to check out the city, follow THIS LINK to see some of the sights.

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville

October 29, 2017 by David Herd

Ideal spot to chill out

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvilleSokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville has a great pool & a beautiful private sandy beach. Exceptional food & very good rooms, what more could you possibly want? 🙂

Pool bar

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville Cocktails or a cold beers at the pool bar.

There are two room sections, we stayed at the cheaper option, the Sokha Express. You still have full use of all the facilities, for a great room rate just book through THIS LINK.

If you prefer the Sokha Beach Resort use THIS LINK for a discount.

It doesn’t get much better than this. 🙂

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvilleRarely were there many pople in the pool which made it absolutely ideal.

But wait, there’s more……

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvilleThe beautiful beach has pure white sand and warm tropical water.

The beach goes on forever, where are the people???

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvilleGenerally Asian people like to stay out of the sun so us foreigners have the place to ourselves. 🙂

 The main building

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville Breakfast is served here & it’s as good as it gets a you can imagine.

The property is huge

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville The deck is around 500 meters from the main building & pool. It’s worth the walk however, you have the choice of two excellent restaurants, Lemongrass & the Lotus.

Why do they call it “The Deck”?

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvilleWell it’s pretty bloody obvious if you ask me. 🙂

Lemongrass Restaurant

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville Food was very good & the place almost deserted.

Soup to die for.

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville

I really do love my soup.

Serendipity Beach

Serendipity Beach SihanoukvilleThis is where most people dine at night, it’s the net beach & all the action is here. Only a 10 minute Tuk Tuk ride.

Tuk Tuk

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville The ten minute ride to Serendipity is only $2 or $3 USD.

Lovely ladies They were working at a wedding that was in the hotel grounds.

This is supposed to be happy hour. 🙂

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville Nobody looks happy, & in fact there certainly were not. 🙂

Drinks are 2 for one at happy hour between 5 & 7 pm.

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville  Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville

Pizzas & burgers are reasonably priced as well.

The Beach Bar

Sokha Beach Resort Sihanoukville Sadly is closes around 7.30 pm.

I guess they want you at their casino.

Sokha Beach Resort SihanoukvillePart of the hotel & when we went there there were more staff than customers.

Sadly this lovely coastal village is never going to be the same, just read THIS STORY.

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia

October 26, 2017 by David Herd

40 minutes by fast boat.

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia is only 40 minutes by fast boat. It seems  a little like Koh Samui 25 years ago, lots of backpackers & hippies.

Leaving Plantation Beach

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaThe fare each way to Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia is $13 USD.

500 Horsepower

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaA very fast smooth ride.

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia Pommie backpackers

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaThere were 4 or 5 English backpackers shrieking to each other over the engine noise, as you can see Steve is not too impressed. 🙂

Our first glimpse of the island.

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaIt was like travelling back in time. 🙂

Vagabonds

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaVagabonds cafe I’m sure has seen it’s share of vagabonds, however this is the first visit by the famous FiveStarVagabond. 🙂 🙂 🙂

The Rising Sun

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaWe settled here for a couple of cold beers and a Phad Thai, the place is run by 3 friendly Italians from Milano.

And here they are…..

Hard at work

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia Well somebody has to do the heavy lifting. 🙂

Crystal clear water here.

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaAs you would expect for a tropical island.

The essence of Koh Rong

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia This shot captures the essence of Koh Rong for me,  a lazy tropical island full of backpackers & hippies.

Talking about backpackers…..

Koh Rong Sihanoukville CambodiaHere is a perfect example, sadly I arrived 30 years too late. 🙂

Guess I’ll go fishing instead. 🙂

Koh Rong Sihanoukville Cambodia Crystal clear water & lots of fish big & small.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

November 11, 2015 by David Herd

On display at the Foreign Correspondents Club.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh & in fact throughout Cambodia, is everywhere you look. There is a huge gap between rich & poor. Apart from this I found the people to be some of the nicest I have met anywhere in Asia.

My recent journey in May 2010 from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville was delayed because I was enjoying myself so much in the city I found it hard to leave.

I returned in October 2017 & couldn’t believe the changes, mainly due to Chinese investments.

The Foreign Correspondents Club

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

I was so surprised by the number of quality restaurants and bars, excellent food, good service and nice decor. On the other side of the coin is the poverty, Cambodia is certainly a third world country struggling to drag itself into the 21st century. Like most poor countries the gap between rich and poor is immense.

The foreign correspondents club.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Relaxing most days in the Foreign Correspondents Club overlooking the Mekong River is like being transported 60 years back in time. Sipping a gin & tonic in the big comfortable leather chairs makes you feel like you are in an Oliver Stone movie covering the Vietnam war.

Shutters on the windows

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Letting in the breeze.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Here is a lovely family playing cards under a tree on a public footpath seemingly without a care in the world.

Happy face selling sunglasses

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

A lasting memory for me is how nice the people are, sure many of them will try to sell you something, however they do it with a smile on their face and without the persistence and aggression of their counterparts in Vietnam and Indonesia.

Taxi

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

A huge bonus in Phnom Penh which is out of character with every other Asian city I have ever visited, is how slow the Motorcycle taxis travel, there is no stress or haste, you sit back, relax and enjoy the ride, plus as you can see the seats are very comfortable.

Monkeys

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

This photo was opposite our hotel, notice the wire grill on one of the upstairs homes. A simple explanation, it is there to stop the dozens of noisy monkeys from entering the home. Every day they scamper along the rooftops and balconies making one hell of a racket, quite funny really.

Malis Restaurant at 136 Norodom Boulevard, Phnom Penh

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

The Mali restaurant was an excellent example of the high quality restaurants in Phnom Penh, great food and fabulous decor. There is another bonus you can buy bags of Cambodian pepper to take home with you, many people, myself included, believe Cambodian pepper is the best in the world.

Good low cost hotel. The Pickled Parrot is a budget hotel run by an Australian, rooms are fine and there is a good bar & restaurant on the ground floor, the location is excellent. The best hotel booking site is Agoda, you have a choice whether to pay now or later when you check out of your hotel.

The mighty Mekong river.

A terrible cruel sight, dying in the heat.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Heartbreaking to see these poor birds suffer in 35 degree heat.

Hot truck probably owned by a government official.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Many expats in Cambodia tell me a lot of government officials spend foreign aid money on expensive cars etc for their own benefit, while continuing poverty Phnom Penh prevails.

Pickled Parrot

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

A bunch of Aussies, next to me is Roger Gaffney who now lives in Saigon, then old mate Tony Murphy with his camera locked and loaded. Can’t remember the other 2 guys.

A great way to relax in the heat of the day.

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Life generally is fairly lay-back in Cambodia.

The mighty Mekong River

Extreme poverty Phnom Penh

Mekong River Phnom Penh Cambodia is certainly changing rapidly, not necessarily for the good I’m afraid. However there are still many wonderful experiences to enjoy in this fascinating country.

I have been lucky enough to visit some of the worlds great rivers as well as the Mekong, the Nile, the Amazon, the Mississippi and the Yangtze. And of course in Australia the Murry and the Darling.

Pretty face at the market

And I certainly don’t mean Murphy. 🙂

Vung Tau South Vietnam coast

January 21, 2015 by David Herd

Put this on your bucket list

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam coast is a 90 minute fast ferry ride from Saigon. One surprise certainly was the statue of Christ similar to Rio on a smaller scale. Wayne Morris, my friend from Sydney climbing the 811 stairs to reach the top. It was very hot and I had to rest 5 times on the way up. 🙂

A tough climb

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This climb reminded me of El Castillo at Chitzen Itza, that one was more frightening but this one was far tougher. Lucky for me they have quite a few rest stations which I was happy to take advantage of. 🙂

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam

A you can see there is access to the very top of the statue, however it is closed between 11 and 1 pm.

Happy dragon

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Halfway down the mountain this happy dragon appears.

Vung Tau South Vietnam ferry terminal

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Only 90 minutes from Saigon in a fast ferry that costs just $10 usd.

Vung Tau fisherman

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vietnam of course specialise in seafood due the the incredibly long coastline.

Downtown Vung Tau

Vung Tau South Vietnam

During 14th and 15th centuries, the cape that would become Vũng Tàu was a swamp which European trading ships visited regularly. The ships’ activities inspired the name Vũng Tàu, which means “anchorage”. The French Indochinese government named it Cap Saint-Jacques (“Cap Xanh Giắc”, in Vietnamese). The cliff of Vũng Tàu is now called Mũi Nghinh Phong (literally meaning “Cape of breeze welcome“) or (“Cape of greeting the wind“).

Enjoying the evening breeze

Vung Tau South Vietnam

late afternoon and late into the evening people gather along the seaside to chat and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Escaping from the sun.

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Most Asian ladies are very careful to stay out of the sun.

 No clever remarks please

Vung Tau South Vietnam

I realise some of my friends will not be able to resist the comparison between myself and the whale. 🙂

Green Hotel $40 pn

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Good location and great value if you book through this AGODA link.

View from Green Hotel

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Although this was a very good location if you like the beach, however next time I visit I’ll probably stay in the town.

Opposite Green Hotel

Vung Tau South Vietnam

The long sandy beach was ideal for my regular morning walk.

 Five Star Imperial Hotel

Vung Tau South Vietnam

My friend was staying 800 meters from The Green Hotel at the five star Imperial Hotel. There is of course no comparison in the facilities, however there is a huge price difference. If you book through AGODA you will get a competitive rate of $230 to $300 aud, but that is a lot more than $40 for the Green hotel.

Imperial Hotel

Vung Tau South Vietnam

An excellent upmarket hotel with a pool and bar right on the beach.

Very unfriendly place

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This beer bar is part of the Imperial hotel, sadly the staff are quite rude and unfriendly. I wanted to have a drink while waiting for my friend to arrive, it was early and only about 4 customers in the whole place.

I wanted to sit near the window to keep an eye out for my friend, however they insisted I sit at the bar because I was alone. Because of their poor attitude I rang my friend and we had drinks elsewhere.

Lucy’s Sports Bar

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This friendly bar is totally the opposite from Vuvuzela, great food and very friendly staff. It’s run by an Aussie called KJ who certainly makes you feel welcome.

Lucy’s Sports Bar

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Here are the friendly girls at Lucy’s, nice food and a good atmosphere.

Scallop salad at Lucy’s sports bar

Vung Tau South Vietnam

The extensive menu offers some great choices, I had a terrific seafood chowder and a great cheeseburger.

Aussie hamburger at Lucy’s

Vung Tau South Vietnam

A bar run by an Aussie is always going to serve a great hamburger.

Sunset at Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This is the view from Lucy’s bar overlooking the bay.

Hollywood night club

Vung Tau South Vietnam

There is a reasonable selection of late night venues, many of them seem to focus on Karaoke.

 Lan Rung

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Good food here and even better beer which they brew themselves.

Shrimp and cauliflower at Lan Rung

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Lan Rung restaurant, shrimp and cauliflower.

 Fresh spring rolls, my favourite.

Vung Tau South Vietnam

They were delicious, I remember a little Vietnamese restaurant on the Gold Coast  beside the fire station near Monaco St, they had some of the best Summer rolls I have ever eaten.

Hoang Hoa Tham road Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This road is a short cut from the beach to the town, about 30% lower taxi fare than going around the coast. You can guess which route the taxi drivers prefer. 🙂

French bakery

Vung Tau South Vietnam

This is a very good French bakery and coffee shop in  Hoang Hoa Tham road, it’s quite large so you can’t miss it. The address is 128 Hoàng Hoa Thám, Xa Vung Tau, Bà Rịa-Vũng Tàu, Vietnam 064. Here is the bakery on Google Earth.

 Fast ferry to Vung Tau

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Only 90 minutes at $10 usd from Saigon to Vung Tau South Vietnam.

15 minutes from HCMC

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Every now and then I take a photo I really love, this is one of those.

HCMC to Vung Tau

Vung Tau South Vietnam

It was an interesting trip from HCM to Vung Tau South Vietnam by river.

Even better value is the luxury mini bus

Vung Tau South Vietnam

They run every hour and pick up from your hotel, the road is excellent, 65% express-way.  The trip from Vung Tau to Saigon was only 80 minutes.

Vung Tau South Vietnam

Vung Tau South Vietnam

I’m the only passenger from Vung Tau to Saigon.

Many thanks for visiting my Vung Tau South Vietnam photo blog.

Sihanoukville Cambodia Coast

August 7, 2013 by David Herd

Cambodia, interesting friendly & mysterious.

Sihanoukville Cambodia coast

Sihanoukville Cambodia coast

Sihanoukville Cambodia Coast is about 3 hours by bus from Phnom Penh. We were sad to leave the city however with the high May temperature we were looking forward to relaxing on the beach while sipping on a few cold beers.

Nice sand & lots of activity

Sihanoukville Cambodia coast

The beaches were more crowded than usual due to a public holiday. Never the less it was great to enjoy the casual atmosphere and sea breeze.

Lots of casual bars along the beach where you can get a nice cold beer.

Sihanoukville was the place of the last official battle of the United States Army in the Vietnam War, although the incident took place outside Vietnam. The Mayaguez incident of 12–15 May 1975 involved US forces and the Khmer Rouge. Currently, divers at Koh Tang, one of the Sihanoukville islands where the major battle to free the USS Mayaguez took place, can see two shipwrecks on the sea floor 40 metres (130 ft) down.

Ziggy was running a small hotel in Sihanoukville in the town center, next time I return I will stay on the beach.

My main impression of Sihanoukville is don’t expect too much in the way of luxury unless you check into an upmarket hotel, just enjoy the casual atmosphere and super low prices compared with other Asian countries.

Thanks for visiting my Sihanoukville Cambodia Coast photo blog.

Angkor Wat Cambodia spectacular

August 6, 2013 by David Herd

Angkor Wat Cambodia 7th wonder of the world.

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Angkor Wat Cambodia one of the 7 Wonders of the World was built in the first half of the 12th century, situated in Cambodia’s northern province of Siem Reap, it is one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. It extends over approximately 400 square kilometres and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures (basins, dykes, reservoirs, canals) as well as communication routes. For several centuries Angkor, was the center of the Khmer Kingdom.

I was quite overwhelmed by this amazing ancient kingdom, to me it is far more impressive than Egypt’s Pyramids. I feel Cambodia is many things, friendly, spectacular and sad all at the one time. In Ankor Wat you are very close to the  Khmer Rouge “Killing Fields” which surely must rate as one of the most atrocious barbaric  periods in human history. I really don’t wish to write about the details of this crime against humanity, which disregarded human life and produced repression & massacres on a massive scale. If you want to find out more please let Google give you the answers.

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Stretching over some 400 square kilometres, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire of the 9th to the 15th centuries, including the largest pre-industrial city in the world. The most famous are the Temple of Angkor Wat and, at Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple with its countless sculptural decorations.

Angkor Wat Cambodia, amazing ancient ruins

Angkor Wat Cambodia

My lasting impressions are of the breathtaking ruins, beautiful children & Cambodia’s unbelievable history.

Beautiful faces in the ruins.

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Sadly, poverty is everywhere in Angkor Wat Cambodia, and I can’t help wondering what % of the billions of dollars in aid ever gets to the people who really need it? Particularly when you see so many government officials driving around in luxury motor vehicles. Oh well, apart from that it is a fascinating country, hopefully at the end of this post I can provide you with a few travel tips for you to consider. One of the many lasting memories for me are the beautiful smiles on the faces of the children who have so little, when it comes to material possessions, yet so much true happiness in their hearts.

Another beautiful face among the ruins

The children always have a smile for you.

Below a “not so” beautiful face among the ruins.

Everywhere you turn there is a magical sight to see.

Magic scene at Angkor Wat

Angkor Wat Cambodia

Located six kilometre north of Siem Reap, Angkor Wat Cambodia is one of the largest of Khmer monuments. Built around the first half of 12th century by King Suryavarman II, the temple’s balance, composition and beauty make it one of the finest monuments in the world.

Though ‘Wat’ is the Khmer (Cambodian) word for temple, the westward orientation of the structure is atypical of temples. Scholars believe that the architecture and sculptures are that of a temple where Lord Vishnu was worshipped but it was also built as a mausoleum for the king after his death.

Lots of strange things to eat here.

Angkor Wat Cambodia

I would be a little wary of shopping here. 🙂

Eat it at your peril. 🙂
