Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Sandy beach at Bournemouth.

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort has a sandy beach unlike Brighton beach and many others of the English coast. I was there in 2007 and returned in 09 mainly to visit the Westbeach restaurant again. The Beach is long and clean. There is plenty of space to chill out. Lovely views and lots to do with places to eat on the promenade and pier.

The benefit of sand

You certainly can’t do this on a beach with stones instead of sand. 🙂

Remember what I said? Bournemouth Beach has sand.

Bournemouth Beach has sand which is a huge improvement on many English beaches.

Westbeach Restaurant

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

Good English restaurants, many people think they are few and far between, but here is one to consider. The Westbeach restaurant in Bournemouth is certainly worth a visit, great location on the beach, with a good menu offering a nice selection. I first visited Westbeach December 2007 then returned in 2009 so things may have changed by now.

AFC Bournemouth

Huge news in 2015 for the local football club who are to be promoted to the premier league. As recently as 2008, Bournemouth sat slumped at the very foot of the four levels of the English league pyramid. Of the 92 teams spanning League Two all the way up to the Premier League, the Cherries, who began the season with minus-17 points as a penalty for entering bankruptcy with £4 million worth of debt, were no. 92. Bournemouth weren’t just on the brink of dropping out of the division structure,  but out of existence altogether. Seven years later, a club that recorded an annual turnover of just £5.1 million for the 2012-13 season will be flooded with about £120 million in additional Premier League revenue.

My local bar in Thailand

Bournemouth English Seaside Resort

My local bar in Thailand is the Cherry Bar so I guess now I’ll have to follow the Cherries. 🙂

Sadly the bar was sold in 2016 & is now called Billabong 2, life as I knew it will never be the same. 🙂

Another restaurant near the Pier.

The city has a much more relaxed atmosphere than Brighton.

Also as a comparison to Brighton sand is so much more inviting than pebbles. 🙂

Thanks for visiting my “Bournemouth English Seaside Resort” post, it is certainly a place to add to your bucket list. Head west from there and visit the delightful village of Lyme Regis on the Jurassic Coast.

The Eye Brighton beach

Brighton Beach English resort, what a pleasant surprise. If you can overlook the pebbles on the beach instead of sand there are so many great pubs and restaurants to choose from. The photo above was taken from my hotel, the New Madeira, only 40 Quid per night.

For a good discount just book through THIS LINK.

Super travel tips. Great Britain has an excellent rail service, save up to 80% by booking your ticket before you arrive, just click here.

The New Madeira hotel is in a great location across the road from the Brighton Pier, only 40 Quid per night for a single room, the walls are a little thin so the rooms can be a little noisy, but the price is right as is the location. If you want something more upmarket choose the Holiday Inn.

If the English winter is too cold for you jump on a plane to Thailand

Plymouth South Coast Devon

December 19, 2013 by David Herd

Driving into the city

Plymouth South Coast Devon

Plymouth South Coast Devon

Plymouth South Coast Devon is a nice city and a unitary authority area on the south coast of Devon, England, about 190 miles south-west of London. It is situated between the mouths of the rivers Plym to the east and Tamar to the west, where they join Plymouth Sound.

Plymouth South Coast Devon

Plymouth South Coast Devon

The cities history goes back to the Bronze Age, when its first settlement grew at Mount Batten. This settlement continued to grow as a trading post for the Roman Empire, until the more prosperous village of Sutton, the current Plymouth, surpassed it.

Plymouth Hoe

Plymouth South Coast Devon

Plymouth is Devon’s largest city and a famous old port that played a key part in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 thanks to ex-slaver Francis Drake and the bad weather, waved goodbye to the Mayflower’s ‘Pilgrim’ passengers on their way to America in 1620, shipped out both Captain Cook and Charles Darwin and was bombed flat by the Luftwaffe in the 1940’s. Some of the old city survived but much of the rebuild was lacking in both style and sensitivity so the city is hardly packed with attractions and traffic can be terrible. However, the Hoe is calm, pretty and encompasses varied memorials and an outdoor pool (Tinside Lido), naval-gazing is popular with the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Citadel at the fore and Crownhill Fort at the rear, while a handful of stately homes offer sumptuous treats such as Saltram, Mount Edgcumbe, Elizabethan House and the Merchant’s House Museum.

Two days in Plymouth was quite enough for me, I think there are many more nicer places along the South coast.

SMEATON’S TOWER.

Plymouth South Coast Devon

Rated as one of the top attractions in the whole of Devon, a visit to Smeaton’s Tower is not to be missed. This eye-catching red and white lighthouse is easy to spot and is located in the Plymouth Hoe area. Dating back to the 18th century, Smeaton’s Tower was actually originally located some 14 miles / 23 km away, in nearby Eddystone Rocks and was painstakingly moved piece by piece to its current location in 1882. It is possible to climb the steep stone stairs to the very top and enjoy the spectacular panoramic views on offer.
