Sydney 1982 flying high

June 7, 2014 by David Herd

Please note, this is not part of my Travel Blog. It’s part of my personal history, check it out if you wish.

Sydney 1982 flying high enjoying life, was a very good year for me, as were many others. I intend to publish posts on the years I remember most vividly, & there have been quite a few. The header shows the view I had from my apartment at 112 Wrights Rd Drummoyne in Sydney, where I lived from 1979 to 1984. With my white Mercedes Sports in the garage, my Bertram 25 moored out front, plus my very own liquor store in Sydenham, some good friends and a string of beautiful girlfriends, life was very close to perfect.

The boat

I had the perfect mooring right outside my apartment, we had so much fun on Sydney harbor visiting all the great beaches & restaurants.

The car

My beautiful Mercedes Sports was the ultimate chick magnet.

As I said earlier, my life was as close to perfect as you could get.

Lets begin on New Years Eve 1981

Sydney 1982 flying high

One of the best NYEs of my life, we overloaded my boat with 16 people and headed off to a seafood restaurant at “the Spit” for dinner before heading to the Opera House for the incredible fireworks. My girlfriend for the night was the gorgeous one in the middle, very unusual that I can’t remember her name.

New Year’s Eve 1981, the Great Escape.

It was like we were caught in a Beirut bomb zone with huge sky rockets peppering the overloaded boat, causing some of my friends to dive overboard in the middle of the harbor to escape the carnage.

Let’s backtrack to the start of our adventure, it was NYE 1981 and 15 of my friends boarded my Bertram 25 and headed for a seafood restaurant near the “Spit bridge” on Middle Harbor in Sydney. Onboard were some of my best friends, Wolf Wottke, Harley Bradstreet, George McEwan & Graham “Biff” LaRoche from Melbourne and 6 or 7 gorgeous girls. My boat was licensed to carry around 10 or 12 people however it was New Year’s Eve so who really cared?

We moored on the edge of the sand at the rear of the restaurant and at 8.30 pm sat down and ordered a feast. Here is where things started to go wrong, we hadn’t factored in the NYE crowd and the food was very slow to arrive, in fact it was after 11 pm by the time the waiter started to serve our meal. By then we were well along the road to intoxication as we had started drinking late afternoon at my apartment in Drummoyne.

As the Sydney fireworks were due to start at midnight we decided to pack up most of the food and head for the Sydney Opera house to watch the spectacular event.

We faced our second problem re-boarding the boat as the tide had come in and the boat was now floating 30 meters from the shore. Our only option was to wade out carrying the boxed up food in water almost up to our backside. The good news was our nice view of the girls hiking up their skirts waist high, which endorses the phrase that every cloud has a silver lining.

Now “Biff” was a huge man as the name implies, & Harley was almost a midget, sometimes we would cruelly refer to him as an ariel photograph of as human being.  So with Harley clutching a cardboard box filled with oysters “Biff” tucked him under his arm and carried him towards the boat.

I’m not sure why “Biff” dropped him, when only 2 meters from the boat, perhaps Harley wriggled or maybe “Biff” was feeling the effects of too many beers. Anyhow Harley briefly disappeared underwater along with the box of precious oysters, which I’m please to say we did recover.

Harley was our own human disaster area, if something was going to go wrong he was usually at the center of things, in fact it was Harley who coined the memorable phrase “anyone can have a bad decade”.

By the time we all got on board it was around 11.30 pm and is was a good 30 minute journey to the Opera House so I gave the boat full throttle and sped toward the Harbour Bridge.

We arrived in record time about 11.55 and I was weaving through the 1500 or so boats like a drunken sailor, which of course I was, searching for a spot to anchor that was not too close to any of the hundreds of spectator craft.  Hallelujah, what seemed to be a minor miracle unfolded before my eyes. A clear circle of water right in the middle of all the boats, so naturally I gave out a cheer and dropped the anchor just as the first fireworks explosion sounded right above us.

Elation quickly turned to fear as huge smoking wooden rods started raining down upon us. As I said at the start It was like we were caught in a Beirut bomb zone with huge sky rockets peppering the overloaded boat causing some of my friends, in particular Harley, to dive overboard in the middle of the harbor to escape the carnage. In the middle of the mayhem & panic it suddenly occurred to me we were smack bang in the middle of the fireworks “drop zone” which the water police had cleared in readiness for the show before retreating out of danger themselves.

I sprang into action like a drunken super hero and pulled up the anchor in record time, then fled the danger zone. No mean feat as my boat lacked an electric winch, so I had to manually pull the damn thing up by hand while standing on the bow.

We moored safely out of harm’s way and assessed the damage, naturally Harley was the most wounded, soaking wet with minor burns on his arm, plus a few small cuts from the smashed champagne bottle he was holding when hit by the first rocket.

Well we settled down and watched the rest of the fireworks reliving the experience that would be told many times over in the coming years, our own personal “great escape”.

Later we motored along the Parramatta River to Habberfield to drop off some passengers, and finally returned “drunk as skunks” to Drummoyne at dawn. Later that day George, Biff & I on impulse flew to the Gold Coast to continue our New Year celebrations.

New Years Eve 1982, the party continues…..

It seems 1982 was one continual never-ending party, here I am NYE in Sydney 1982 with Steve Bates, Helen Burke & Robyn Underwood.

Three or four times a week my boat & I would head for Doyles restaurant & the Watson’s Bay hotel at Watson’s Bay. This was our favourite destination for long drunken lunches.

Helen & I spent most of 1982 together after bumping into each other (having not been in contact for several years) at Melbas nightclub in Surfers Paradise on the evening of January the 1st, the night after my epic “great escape” on Sydney Harbour.

I caught up with Helen again in 2014 at her home in Dromana where she produces excellent wine.

Grahame aka “Biff”, Kitty & Helen Burke.

January 1982 and the party continued on the Gold Coast. The new sexy girl in the photo was “Kitty” a totally uninhibited Dutch girl who I knew from Sydney, but that’s another story. 🙂

Kitty

Without a doubt one of the sexiest most uninhibited women I have ever known.

A very difficult achievement

Sydney 1982 flying high

Here is Kitty, Di & Helen helping me achieve one of those very important difficult goals that I set myself during my younger years. Three ladies that I have bonked in one photo, that’s kind of like winning 3 Olympic gold medals, made more difficult when each of the three knew about the other two, priceless. 🙂

First trip Pattaya 1980

May 29, 2014 by David Herd

First trip Pattaya 1980

First trip Pattaya 1980

First trip Pattaya Thailand March 1980

First trip Pattaya 1980 with my good friend Rob Symonds. We stayed at the Royal Cliff Hotel which had only been open for 2 years. The photo of the long-tail boat in the header was taken in May 2014 however the fishing boats in 1980 were virtuously the same design, as you will see in this post.

Pattaya Thailand March 1980 was like visiting a sleepy fishing village. Even before the start of the Vietnam War, American GIs had put Pattaya on the map as the best beach destination to unwind and indulge. But when large numbers of troops began to arrive at the neighbouring Ban Sattahip Air Base in 1968, things really picked up in Pattaya. Also known as U-Tapao International Airport, the army base at Sattahip was heavily staffed and used by the US Air Force throughout the Vietnam conflict.

Prior to jet skis

First trip Pattaya Thailand March 1980

Notice that well before jet skis the little speed boats were powered by a 25 hp engine.

It all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29th June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn, thus opening Pandora’s Box for this sleepy fishing village. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to the concrete sprawl of Bangkok.

Where are the deck chairs?

The beach was very natural on my first trip to Pattaya in in 1980, hardly any deck chairs & umbrellas.

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Copacabana beach

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio dominates many photos taken on Copacabana beach. Ride the cable car to the top & see the breathtaking view of Rio.

The name Sugarloaf was coined in the 16th century by the Portuguese during the heyday of sugar cane trade in Brazil. According to historian Vieira Fazenda, blocks of sugar were placed in conical molds made of clay to be transported on ships. The shape given by these molds was similar to the peak, hence the name.

holds 65 passengers

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

A glass-walled cable car (in popular Portuguesebondinho – more properly called teleférico), capable of holding 65 passengers, runs along a 1400-metre route between the peaks of Pão de Açúcar and Morro da Urca every 20 minutes. The original cable car line was built in 1912 and rebuilt around 1972/1973 and in 2008.

The cable car leaves a ground station located at the base of the Babilônia hill, to the Urca hill and then to the Pão de Açúcar.

You don’t have to take the cable car, if you can afford it grab a helicopter.

Sugarloaf Mountain Rio De Janeirio

What a view from the top, from here Copacabana looks like standing room only.

Wedged between the mountains & sea.

Sugarloaf Mountain Rio De Janeirio

160,000 people live in Copacabana and 44,000 or 27.5% of them are 60 years old or older. Many friends now tell me in 2017 Rio does not have the same appeal as 10 years ago, perhaps this is true however it will always remain as one of the most spectacular cities in the world.

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Copacabana covers an area of 7.84 km² which gives the borough a population density of 20,400 people per km².   Residential buildings eleven to thirteen stories high built right next to each other dominate the borough. Houses and two-story buildings are rare.

Vermelha Beach

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Praia Vermelha is the smallest city beach in Rio de Janeiro, and it lies in a sheltered cove between the 688 ft Morro da Urca and the 754 ft Morro da Babilonia. It’s here where you catch the 2 stage cable car up to Morra da Urca and then on to the 1300 ft Sugar Loaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar) out in the bay.

Vidigal favela

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

You can also see Vidigal favela at the north end of Ipanema.  Vidigal overlooks Ipanema Beach  and Ilhas Cagarras. It is located in the South Zone of Rio, between Leblon and São Conrado neighborhoods.   The neighborhood is a place of hardship for the residents. They have the problem of drug wars, and when fighting occurs, sometimes they must stay in their homes for days.   In November 2011, Vidigal and its neighboring community, Rocinha were pacified by the Pacifying Police Unit.

Sugarloaf Rio De Janeirio

Rio de Janeiro is one of the most visited cities in the southern hemisphere and is known for its natural settings, carnival celebrationssambaBossa Novabalneario beaches such as Barra da TijucaCopacabanaIpanema, and Leblon. Some of the most famous landmarks in addition to the beaches include the giant statue of Christ the Redeemer (“Cristo Redentor”) atop Corcovado mountain, named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World; Sugarloaf mountain (Pão de Açúcar) with its cable car; the Sambódromo, a permanent grandstand-lined parade avenue which is used during Carnival; and Maracanã Stadium, one of the world’s largest football stadiums.

Botafogo is a beachfront neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a mostly upper middle class and small commerce community, and is located between the hills of Mundo Novo, Dona Marta and São João.

Cagarras Islands

Uninhabited archipelago lying just 5km (3 miles) off legendary Ipanema Beach. The Cagarras Islands (Ilhas Cagarras in Portuguese) are a wildlife refuge for sea gulls and other marine birds, and you can frequently spot — or swim among — dolphins in the waters offshore.

May 16, 2014 by David Herd

Russian babes go to the Pattaya Beach Club and so do I. 🙂

Wealthy Play St Tropez

May 2, 2014 by David Herd

Let the games begin.

Wealthy play St Tropez

Wealthy Play St Tropez

Wealthy Play St Tropez, a place for sheer opulence, people watching, & great restaurants and bars. Please remember to take your money with you. 🙂

Boules-type games are traditional and popular in FranceItaly and Croatia, and are also popular in some former French colonies. In those countries, boules games are often played in open spaces (town squares and parks) in villages and towns. Dedicated playing areas for boules-type games are typically large, level, rectangular courts made of flattened earth, gravel, or crushed stone, enclosed in wooden rails or back boards.

Paella anyone?

Wealthy Play St Tropez

The huge place des Lices Market is a kaleidoscope of everything from fruit and veg to antique mirrors and slippers. It’s truly legendary and It is studded with plane trees, cafés and (when the market’s not on) pétanque players.

Saturday is market day in St Tropez

Wealthy Play St Tropez

The seaside resort town Saint Tropez is still very popular with the tourists, although the jetset and the in-crowd have long since left it behind. Set on the lovely blue water of the Bay of Saint-Tropez, this modern version of a medieval town is most popular for the line of yachts along the quay, and the facing line of terrace cafés, divided by a parade of strolling tourists.

Look at me, look at me. 🙂

Wealthy Play St Tropez

Naturally all the chairs face the footpath so customers can ogle & gawk at the people passing, while pretending not too. 🙂

The famous Cafe de Paris.

Wealthy Play St Tropez

There is of course another famous Cafe de Paris in Monte Carlo.

So many restaurants & so little time. 🙂

Wealthy Play St Tropez

I guess I’m stating the obvious however you can get far better value for your money by visiting the restaurants a couple of blocks away from the sea front.

The old part of town is quite fascinating.

Wealthy Play St Tropez

Behind the cafés, the small streets and old buildings are picturesque, but they’re more popular for the multitude of shops and restaurants than historical significance.

The back streets are interesting

Very interesting back streets of ST Tropez.

You can really smell the money here. 🙂

Not much traffic here so a bike would be a safe way to see the city.

Cape Town City South Africa

April 2, 2014 by David Herd

Long St Cape town City

Cape Town City South Africa

Cape Town City South Africa

Cape Town City is an interesting mix of new & old, Long Street is one of the main streets located in the City Bowl section of Cape Town. It’s famous as a bohemian hang out, the street is lined with many book stores, pubs, & many ethnic restaurants and bars.

Many interesting buildings

Cape Town City South Africa

Unlike my other posts on Cape Town city which are all very positive, I was disappointed in Long Street. I chose a hotel in the city just to be near this Street because of the information I had received when researching my trip. As it turned out I found the restaurants rather ordinary, plus walking down the street alone at night was rather intimidating. I have been alone at night in some of the most dangerous cities in the world so I do know what I’m talking about, Cape Town city at night was certainly a bit edgy.

These guys are here for a reason

Cape Town City South Africa

Many of these public safety guys are all over the Cape Town city, there is obviously a very good reason for their presence.

Here is what how the websites describe Long Street, It’s probably fine if you are a backpacker or with a group of friends, however for anyone else my advice is go to the V & A Waterfront which is totally the opposite to Long Street;

MOTHER CITY PARTY CAPITAL

If you’re looking for fun vibes and an excuse to stay out all night, visit Long Street, party capital of the Mother City.

One of the many great old buildings

Cape Town City South Africa

The old buildings in Cape Town city certainly have character, plus if you are drinking on the first floor verandas you won’t be bothered by the many beggars. The locals call Cape Town city the Mother city.

 Grand Daddy Hotel

Cape Town City South Africa

Contrary to what I said before I did have an enjoyable meal at Grand Daddy Hotel.

Cape Town city Grand Daddy Hotel

This was a nice meal at a very reasonable price.

Time to leave Long Street

Cape Town City South Africa

I have no idea what this building is, if I ever go back to Cape Town I’ll find out and let you know.  😳

Metlife Centre

Cape Town City South Africa

The Metlife Centre, is a 28 floor, 120 meter tall modernist skyscraper situated close to the Cape Town International Convention Center in the City Bowl area of Cape Town city, South Africa. The spired antenna on the building’s roof is 22 m/72 feet tall and was lifted into place by helicopter just prior to its completion in 1993.

A 30 minute walk

Cape Town City South Africa

From V & A Waterfront to the city is about 30 minutes walking.

 Castle of Good Hope

Cape Town City South Africa

The Castle of Good Hope is a star fort built in the 17th century in Cape Town city, South Africa. Originally located on the coastline of Table Bay, following land reclamation the fort is now located inland.

Hotel on St Georges

Cape Town City South Africa

A very good value hotel in the city center with very helpful staff. Ask for a double bed, NOT two singles jammed together. Book here for a good price. The real shining lights for me in Cape Town city were V & A Waterfront, the wonderful Table Mountain & the impressive coastline.

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Cable car to the top

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Loving charismatic Cape Town & especially one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist attractions with approximately 800,000 people a year using the cableway.  On the 29 December 2004 the cableway passed its 16 millionth visitor.

Loving charismatic Cape Town which lived up to what people had told me to expect, charismatic, colourful & spectacular. The city is dominated by the mystical Table mountain however the coastline & the V & A Waterfront have a huge amount of appeal also.

From the cable car

Loving charismatic Cape Town

It’s a long way down, if you are afraid of heights you may find this ride a little challenging.  😳

Top of the mountain

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Lots of thrill seekers actually climb to the top, I guess it also saves spending money on the cable car.

Downtown Cape Town from the mountain

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Cape Town is such a windy city Table Mountain is often closed to tourists.

Signal Hill

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Signal Hill, or Lion’s Rump, is a landmark flat-topped hill located in Cape Town, next to Lion’s Head and Table Mountain. The hill was also known as “The Lion’s Flank”, a term now obsolete.

Hout Bay

Loving charismatic Cape Town

The sheltered bay of Hout Bay has a white sand beach, a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike. Hout Bay has one of the busiest fishing harbors in the Western Cape with and established tuna, snoek and crayfish industry. The harbor is home to the Hout Bay Yacht Club and several restaurants.

Coast near Hout Bay

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Certainly the best way to get an appreciation of Cape Town is to ride the on & off bus, there are two routes, the red & the blue line. The blue is more interesting but does not include Table Mountain.

View from the bus

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Cape Town has a beautiful coast line, one of the beaches however are clogged with seaweed which prevents swimming.

Waterfront homes

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Some waterfront homes have a height restriction that does not let them build above street level giving unobstructed views from the road.

Green Point Lighthouse

Loving charismatic Cape Town

If you were a Victorian-era sailor home from the sea in Cape Town, the Lighthouse Service beckoned. You learnt your new trade at the Green Point lighthouse, which was built in 1824. This lighthouse was designed and built by a German stone-dresser and architect called Herman Schutte. It was commissioned by the acting governor of the Cape, Sir Rufane Donkin, and building began in 1821. To receive my latest posts please follow me on Twitter

Camps Bay Cape Town

Loving charismatic Cape Town

Camps Bay is an affluent suburb of Cape Town. In summer it attracts a large number of foreign visitors as well as South Africans looking for a beach holiday, there are lots of trendy restaurants opposite the beach.

Here is where I had lunch in Camps Bay.

Loving charismatic Cape Town

For most of the 1800s Camps Bay was undeveloped. Lord Charles Somerset used the area for hunting and used the Roundhouse as his lodge. Kloof Road was built in 1848 and in 1884 Thomas Bain was commissioned to build a road from Sea Point to Camps Bay using convict labor. The road was completed in 1887 and named Victoria road to honor Queen Victoria’s jubilee in 1888. The road allowed people to cycle out to Camps Bay which had gained popularity as a picnic site. This led to the development, in 1901 of the Camps Bay tramway to bring people out for the day and with it the development of the tidal pools, the Rotunda (now the Bay Hotel) and a pavilion for concerts and shows. In 1913 Camps Bay was incorporated into Cape Town although it was still seen as a recreational area rather than a residential area.

Camps Bay

Loving charismatic Cape Town

The first residents of Camps Bay were the San (Hunter Gatherers) and the Goringqhaique, Khoi pastorates. When Jan van Riebeek established a refreshment station for the VOC (Dutch East India Company), the 12 Apostles were covered in forests with lion, leopard and antelope.

No matter where you go in Cape Town Table Mountain is nearly always in sight, it totally dominates the landscape.

Food, food & more food

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Great food Waterfront Cape Town, I had a terrific dinner at OYO restaurant & cocktail bar, the entree pictured above was as good as I have had anywhere in the world. Prawn and avocado tian with sesame wonton crisp’s and a touch of “caviar” for around $9. A dozen Oysters were only $22.

Food & the magic mountain, two things stick in my mind when I think of Cape town,  great food at V & A Waterfront and the magnificent Table Mountain with clouds cascading over the top.

LIFE DOESN’T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THIS

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Add a stunning view, excellent decor and very efficient staff to the great food and you have all the ingredients for a very good evening.

I have eaten oysters all over the world, please check out THIS LINK.

Great food Waterfront Cape Town & wonderful smiling faces

Two of the friendly staff at OYO, how about those terrific smiles?

Den Anker, Belgium restaurant & Bar

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Great statue on the bar at Den Anker, they import their beers from top Belgian producers to ensure that locals have the opportunity to taste the best Belgium has to offer. Here is their description of what they serve; “We have 6 amazing beers on tap as well as some really exciting bottle brands.Liefmans Cuvee Brut is a firm favorite and if you are feeling a little adventurous you may like to try a Duvel Tripel Hop. We serve Trappist beers, Orval, Westmalle and Chimay for the real traditionalists. Beer drinkers wanting to sample Kwak beer should check the state of their socks. The draught beer is served in so special (and expensive) a glass that we demand one of your shoes as a deposit. It’s kept in a basket at the bar till you’ve returned our glass.”

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in the historic heart of Cape Town’s working harbour is South Africa’s most-visited destination, having the highest rate of foreign tourists of any attraction in the country, Situated between Robben Island and Table Mountain and set against a backdrop of sea and mountain views, it offers a variety of shopping and entertainment options to visitors, intermingled with office locations.

Nice colonial building on the waterfront.

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Next time I visit I’ll choose a hotel near the V & A.

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront

Great food Waterfront Cape Town

Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, began construction of the harbor in 1860. The first basin was named after himself, the second after his mother, hence the name. The Victoria & Alfred Waterfront development is a renewal project that incorporates much of the historic harbor infrastructure. The whole complex is managed by a private company owned by Transnet. An international consortium of Dubai World and London & Regional Properties acquired the development in 2006 at a record value in South African terms of 7.4 billion rand.

Beauty & the Beast

Safari Aquilla Game Park

Safari Aquilla Game Park

Safari Aquilla Game Park Cape Town, a privately owned reserve 3 hours north of Capetown. Although there were not an abundance of animals & species it was still a great experience, our guide was very good and we were able to get very close to the magnificent animals. The lions were in a separate enclosure and contrary to what our guide said, I think they are kept there so they won’t eat the other animals.  😳

Up close & personal

Safari Aquilla Game Park

We were only 4 meters away from this beautiful beast in an open truck, however our guide said we were safe because they only ate at night.  😆

This man would not lie to you.  🙄

Safari Aquilla Game Park

Reg was an excellent friendly guide, and if he says the lion won’t eat you through the day then I choose to believe him.

My favourites were the rhinos.

Safari Aquilla Game Park

I really loved seeing these beautiful animals up close. Living in Thailand means I get to see a lot of elephants, Tigers etc, however the rhino has always fascinated me.

They always sit facing the opposite

It was fantastic to see these powerful beasts up close.

Such a powerful animal

They look absolutely prehistoric.

Another evil eye

I am told hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal.

Young 18 month old hippos.

These two were quiet shy, as we came closer they slid into the damn.

A great looking Zebra

It almost seemed like he was posing for the cameras.

There certainly doesn’t seem to be much to eat here.

Our safari truck

As you can see there is not much protection from a wild animal attack.  🙁

Here come the big guys.

Safari Aquilla Game Park

As I said earlier, there may not be many animals at Aquila, but the guides do a terrific job getting you close so you can enjoy the experience.

Magnificent beasts at Safari Aquilla Game Park Cape Town

Safari Aquilla Game Park

One species of African elephant, the bush elephant, is the largest living terrestrial animal, while the forest elephant is the third largest. Their thickset bodies rest on stocky legs, and they have concave backs.  Their large ears enable heat loss. The upper lip and nose form a trunk. The trunk acts as a fifth limb, a sound amplifier, and an important method of touch. African elephants’ trunks end in two opposing lips, whereas the Asian elephant trunk ends in a single lip. Please click on Google + to help my page ranking.

What’s Gnu?

Safari Aquilla Game Park

The wildebeest, also called the gnu is an antelope in the genus Connochaetes. It belongs to the family Bovidae, which includes antelopes, cattle, goats, sheep and other even-toed horned ungulates.Connochaetes includes two species, both native to Africa: the black wildebeest, or white-tailed gnu (C. gnou); and the blue wildebeest, or brindled gnu (C. taurinus). Fossil records suggest these two species diverged about one million years ago, resulting in northern and southern species. The blue wildebeest changed very little from the ancestor species, while the black wildebeest took on more morphological changes to adapt to a habitat of open grassland in the south. Today, the blue wildebeest has five subspecies, while the black wildebeest has no named subspecies.  In East Africa, the wildebeest is the most abundant big-game species, both in population and biomass.

Ostrich

Safari Aquilla Game Park

The ostrich shares the order Struthioniformes with the kiwis, emus, rheas, and cassowaries. It is distinctive in its appearance, with a long neck and legs, and can run at up to about 70 km/h (43 mph), the fastest land speed of any bird. The ostrich is the largest living species of bird and lays the largest eggs of any living bird (extinct elephant birds of Madagascar and the giant moa of New Zealand laid larger eggs).

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach

February 11, 2014 by David Herd

Ain’t over till the fat lady sings. 🙂

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach is obviously a “tongue in cheek” look at some very overweight European ladies enjoying the beautiful Thailand sunshine. Please don’t be offended, it is simply part of life’s rich pageant, if you want to see some more glamorous beach babes have a look at my Brazilian post or Russian post.

Feel the sand between your toes

The girls are about to hit the surf, correction, when they dive in they will create the surf.  😆

Smoking used for weight control

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach

I am told many super models smoke to help keep their weight under control, clearly in this case it has not worked.

Cosy beach Babushkas

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach

Cosy beach used to be a magnet for Russian Babushkas, there are about 100 steps to get down to the beach so it’s no easy task for them.

Babushka eye candy

Sexy girls in brief bikinis are a traffic hazard here in Pattaya, motorists take their eyes off the road to admire the passing parade. Live webcam from my balcony at Markland overlooking Pattaya beach in Thailand.

Supermodel photo shoots happen all the time on Pattaya beach.

We can only hope they don’t turn over.

We can only hope they don’t turn over, however perhaps you should  avert your eyes in case they do.
