David Herd, here’s my bio.

My name is David Herd, I have a passport, camera, kindle, & I really love to travel.

David Herd, here’s my bio.

David Herd

David Herd, I have been living in Thailand for the last 8 years. Where has the time gone? It seems like you go to sleep one night, wake up the next morning, and 20 years have flashed by. Who knows how many years I have left, however let me be clear on one thing, I have enjoyed a wonderful charmed life, and if it all ended today I would leave this world with no regrets. OK, enough of the morbid stuff, born in Sydney halfway through the last century, started my travels in the 60s with the usual U.K. Europe adventure at the age of 20, back to Australia and worked in Sales & Marketing with multinational companies including Sanyo, Canon & Remington. Engaged to be married 3 times and never quite made it to the alter, moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland in 1987, worked for a couple of banks as a Financial Planner, and after 25 fun filled years packed up and moved to Thailand. What is the purpose of this blog? I intend to use it to record my travel history, to offer & receive good travel tips, display photographs, comment on places I visit, restaurants I eat in, and  it can replace the autobiography that I intended to write.  I plan to return to Australia to enjoy the Autumn of my years around 2024.  My main concern is I may find life rather boring after Thailand.

One of the great benefits to me of my photo blog is I get to re-live all the fabulous moments in my life, without photos as a reminder I believe you forget 80% of what you have done.

I moved to Thailand mainly because I wanted to keep travelling while my health allowed me to, there are huge advantages being closer to all the places I want to visit.

Cost of living in Thailand is around 35% of the cost in Australia, plus flights are 50% cheaper because you are much closer to everywhere. 🙂 Consequently I am able to travel to many more places compared to living in Australia.

Having said all that, it is & has always been my intention to return to Australia when my travelling is finished, I predict this will happen around 2024.

DH, 1980 Singapore

As you can see I have not changed much since 1980, however when friends see this photo they often remark that it reminds them of a Miami drug dealer from the mid 80s, very cruel wouldn’t you agree?  😆

In fact this photo was taken in Singapore when my old friend Rob Symonds & I traveled to the Philippines,  Hong Kong & Thailand, my first introduction to Bangkok & Pattaya.  Thailand obviously  had a huge effect on me as it has been my home since October 2011.

As well as being a travel fanatic I guess you could say I am an obsessive amateur photographer, check these links for lots of photos;

I have travelled extensively for many years and I know quite a lot about Australia, Japan, Brazil, Thailand, Italy & England. I also know  a bit about CambodiaVietnam & the French Riviera so if I can be of any assistance to you please ask. A rare occurrence, David Herd flying Qantas 1st class New York to L.A.  😎

A rare treat in 1st class. 🙂

Still going strong December 2013.

In March 2015 I had just completed my Eastern European Odyssey  plus London, it was a hectic 4 week trip to a number of cities I had never visited before. First stop was Istanbul on February 25 2015 then on to London for a few days before flying to Zagreb in Croatia. A 3 hour bus trip took me to Split on the coast for a couple of days followed by 5 hours on the bus down the coast to Dubrovnik.

From Dubrovnik I travelled to Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina then onto Sarajevo. Finally back to Zagreb for one night before a horror train journey to Budapest due to construction work on the railroad.

A stand out feature of this trip was my selection of hotels and apartments, everyone of them was in a perfect location with a very reasonable price when booked through Agoda,

Had another fabulous trip back to Tokyo,  Osaka and first time to South Korea in late September.

In 2016 I had a quieter year for travel, Koh Samui in June and Japan again in October.

Relatively quite again in 2017, two trips to Oz then Chiang Mai & Cambodia in October.

Quiet again in 2018 due to falling interest rates in Australia & a poor AUD exchange rate. My trip to northern Japan was fantastic. The Gold Coast in July was very good as well.

My history, particularly over the last 30 years is dominated by overseas travel. I sold my home in Australia October 20th 2011 and have have been living in Thailand since then. I don’t know where the time has gone? It seems like you go to sleep one night, wake up the next morning, and 20 years have flashed by. Not sure how many years I have left, however I have enjoyed a wonderful charmed life, and if it all ended today I would leave this world with no regrets. I was born in Sydney halfway through the last century, started my travels in the 60s with the usual U.K. Europe adventure at the age of 20, back to Australia and worked in Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide in Sales & Marketing with multinational companies including Sanyo, Canon & Remington. Engaged to be married 3 times and never quite made it to the alter, finally realized by the mid 90s I was not cut out for "long term relationships" so I moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland in January 1987, worked for a couple of banks as a Financial Planner, I took a year off work in 1998 to travel and never went back to full time work again, after 25 fun filled years on the Coast I packed up and moved to Thailand. What is the purpose of this blog? Well I really want to use it to record my travel experiences & to display my photographs, give and receive travel tips, comment on places I visit, restaurants I eat in and use it to replace the autobiography I intended to write, apart from all that it helps me fill in my day. :) I moved to Thailand mainly because I wanted to keep travelling while my health allowed me to, there are huge advantages being closer to all the places I want to visit. Cost of living in Thailand is around 35% of the cost in Australia, plus flights are 50% cheaper because you are much closer to everywhere. ???? Consequently I am able to travel to many more places compared to living in Australia. Having said all that, it is & has always been my intention to return to Australia when my travelling is finished, I predict this will happen around 2021.
