Manarola seaside village Italy

Magnificent Cinque Terre

Manarola seaside village Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy seems to cling to the side of the cliff, it is the fourth village in the Cinque Terre and quite spectacular. I couldn’t believe how the people would sunbathe on the jagged rocks. 🙂

Manarola on the rocks

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola Cinque Terre may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo, dating from 1338. The local dialect is Manarolese, which is marginally different from the dialects in the nearby area. The name “Manarola” is probably dialectical evolution of the Latin, “magna rota”. In the Manarolese dialect this was changed to “magna roea” which means “large wheel”, in reference to the mill wheel in the town.

That concrete looks soooo comfortable. 🙂

Manarola’s primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned; references from Roman writings mention the high quality of the wine produced in the region. In recent years, Manarola and its neighbouring towns have become popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell’Amore, “Love’s Trail”) and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town. Manarola is one of the five villages. Mostly all of the houses are bright and colourful. Manarola was celebrated in paintings by Antonio Discovolo (1874-1956)

Corniglia seaside village Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

The fabulous Italian coast

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy is the third village between Vernazza and Manarola. Many people walk between the villages, lazy people like me catch the train. 🙂

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

Lunch in a peaceful courtyard

Corniglia seaside village Italy

The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre’s villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Documents dating from 1276-77 mention the existence of a castle. However, remains of the castle have yet to be discovered and the location of the castle grounds is unknown.

Monterosso seaside village Italy

Unique coastal resort

Monterosso seaside village Italy

Monterosso seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Monterosso seaside village Italy is the first village of the Cinque Terre, or five lands as they say in English, the next one along the coast is Vernazza. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town. The two areas are divided by a single tunnel that caters to pedestrians and the very few cars in the town.

Monterosso

Monterosso seaside village Italy
The beach at Monterosso runs along most of the coast line and is well used by tourists and locals. The beach is the only extensive sand beach in the Cinque Terre. Monterosso is a small town that in the summer months is overrun by tourists.

Pebbles on the beach

The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949. This is because Italian officials considered the village too large to be considered part of the historic trail.

Vernazza seaside village Italy

December 7, 2014 by David Herd

The very best of Italy

Vernazza seaside village Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Vernazza seaside village Italy is the second village after  Monterosso and before Corniglia. We chose to stay here because we could park the car close to the village. First records recognizing Vernazza as a fortified town date back to the year 1080. Referred to as an active maritime base of the Obertenghi, a family of Italian nobility, it was a likely point of departure for naval forces in defense of pirates.

Great food at Vernazza

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

In the 1800s, after a long period of stagnation, Vernazza returned to wine production, enlarging and creating new terraced hillsides. The result was a revitalization of Vernazza’s commerce. Also at this time, the construction of the Genova–La Spezia rail line began, putting an end to Vernazza’s long isolation. The population of Vernazza increased by 60% as a result. Meanwhile, the construction of La Spezia’s naval base also proved important to Vernazza in providing employment for many members of the community.

Vernazza seaside village Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by torrential rains, massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud and debris, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. The town was evacuated and remained in a continued state of emergency

Such a peaceful setting

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

With the arrival of the 20th century, Vernazza experienced a wave of emigration as working the land was viewed as dangerous and the culprit of disease, and the ability to further exploit agriculture diminished.

Sandstone buildings

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

In 1997, the Cinque Terre was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was born. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue to take place.

Great Ocean Road Australia

Twelve Apostles

Great Ocean Road Australia

Great Ocean Road Southern Australia

Great Ocean Road Australia on the south coast of Victoria offers some of the most breathtaking spectacular scenery in the world. Look at the following photos to see what I mean.

Breathtaking scenery

Great Ocean Road Southern Australia

I drove from Adelaide to Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road Australia in October 2014, I had driven this road once before in  1988.

In 2009, gone baby gone.

Now there are only 8 Apostles left. 🙂

Of course there were more Apostles back then. 🙂

The Twelve Apostles Great Ocean Road Australia

Great Ocean Road Southern Australia

The Great Ocean Road officially starts at Torquay and travels 243 kilometres westward to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool, the largest city along the road. The road is two lane (one in each direction), and is covered by a speed limit changing between 80 kilometres per hour and 100 kilometres per hour Great Ocean Road as viewed from Teddy’s Lookout, south of Lorne The road is considered a tourist attraction in the area, in which much of the road hugs coastline affectionately known as the Surf Coast between Torquay and Cape Otway and the Shipwreck Coast further west of Cape Otway, providing visibility of Bass Strait and the Southern Ocean. The road traverses rainforests, as well as beaches and cliffs composed of limestone and sandstone, which is susceptible to erosion.

The road travels via Anglesea, Lorne, Apollo Bay, and Port Campbell, the latter being notable for its natural limestone and sandstone rock formations including Loch Ard Gorge, The Grotto, London Arch and The Twelve Apostles.  At the stretch of the Great Ocean Road nearer to Geelong, the road meanders along the coast, with tall, almost-vertical cliffs on the other side of it. Road signs put up along the road warn motorists of possible rockfalls, which have occurred before.

Now you see it, now you don’t.

Here is one of my favourite travel stories, I’m guessing the conversation went something like this, “gee Dave do you think it’s safe to go out there?” “Of course it is, what could possibly go wrong Kelli? This has been standing here for millions of years. It was the 15th of January 1990 & just as they got to the end of the bridge it collapsed behind them, they were later rescued by police helicopter.

Australian Football Fanatics

AFL or Australian Football Fanatics

Australian Football Fanatics

Australian Football Fanatics

Australian football fanatics is an understatement, ten days ago on Saturday September 27 2014 100,000 people were at the MCG for the grand final. Sadly for me Hawthorn smashed my beloved Sydney Swans. The Swans did win the flag in 2012 & 2005, this post focuses on my trip to Melbourne in 2006 for what we Aussies call an Australian football fanatics weekend escape.

Another incredibly busy year in 2006 for travel including Belem at the mouth of the mighty Amazon , Fortaleza on the north coast of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Buzios, Cabo Frio & another great trip to Tuscany & Portofino.

Melbourne Cricket Ground

Australian Football Fanatics

Melbourne Cricket Ground or the MCG is the home of Australian football. Until the 1970s, more than 120,000 people sometimes crammed into the venue – the record crowd standing at around 130,000 for a Billy Graham evangelistic crusade in 1959, followed by 121,696 for the 1970 VFL Grand Final. Grandstand redevelopments and occupational health and safety legislation have now limited the maximum seating capacity to approximately 95,000 with an additional 5000 standing room capacity, bringing the total capacity to 100,024.

 Flinders St Station

Australian Football Fanatics
Flinders Street is served by Metro’s suburban services, and V/Line regional services to Gippsland. It is the busiest station on Melbourne’s metropolitan network, with some 92.6 million passenger movements recorded in 2011/12.

It was the first railway station in an Australian city and the world’s busiest passenger station in the late 1920s.

The main station building, completed in 1909, is a cultural icon of Melbourne, with its prominent dome, arched entrance, tower and clocks one of the city’s most recognisable landmarks. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. The Melburnian idiom “I’ll meet you under the clocks” refers to the row of clocks above the main entrance, which indicate the time-tabled time of departure for trains on each line; another idiom, “I’ll meet you on the steps”, refers to the wide staircase underneath these clocks. Flinders Street Station is responsible for two of Melbourne’s busiest pedestrian crossings, both across Flinders Street, including one of Melbourne’s few pedestrian scrambles.

St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne

Australian Football Fanatics

St Paul’s Cathedral is built on the site where the first public Christian services in Melbourne were led by Dr Alexander Thomson in 1836.  Soon afterwards a small wooden chapel was built elsewhere, and the area became a corn market until 1848, when it was made available for the building of the bluestone St Paul’s Parish Church.  Consecrated in 1852, this Church was used until 1885, when it was demolished to make way for the present Cathedral.

Religion in Australia is diverse but the country is predominantly Christian with, in an optional question on the 2011 Census, 61.1% of the Australian population declaring some variety of Christianity. Historically the percentage has been far higher and the religious landscape of Australia is changing and diversifying.  Also in 2011, 22.3% of Australians stated “no religion”, and a further 8.55% chose not to answer the question. The remaining population is a diverse group which includes Buddhists (2.5%), Muslims (2.2%), Hindus (1.3%), Jews (0.45%) and Sikhs (0.3%).

Federation Square

Federation Square in Melbourne, is a mixed-use development covering an area of 3.2 hectares and centred around two major public spaces: open squares and one covered, built on top of a concrete deck above busy railway lines.

The Yarra River

Australian Football Fanatics

The lower stretches of the river is where the city of Melbourne was established in 1835 and today Greater Melbourne dominates and influences the landscape of its lower reaches. I hope you have noticed that Australian football is not the only attraction in Melbourne. 🙂

Pattaya beach bay city views

September 6, 2014 by David Herd

An exciting place to live

Pattaya beach bay

Pattaya beach bay

Pattaya beach bay & city views is a collection of photos from Pattaya bay & the surrounding area. Here’s what I see each day from my condo, best view I have had from any of my previous homes.

Pattaya Beach Bay at low tide

Pattaya beach bay

From July for a few months we get very low tides and the beach looks better than it really is.

Chinese tourists boarding the boats

Pattaya beach bay

Every day they line up in their hundreds to go Para Sailing and to visit Koh Larn island.

Boats everywhere

Pattaya beach bay

This sight is repeated every day of the year on Pattaya beach bay.

Bali Hi Wharf south Pattaya

Pattaya beach bay

In the background the building under construction is now 50 floors high (as of September 2014) Currently shrouded under controversy due to alleged unauthorized changes to the original plan.

Ferry to Koh Larn

Pattaya beach bay

A cheaper way to get to Koh Larn is by ferry from south Pattaya, a 40 minute ride for 30 Baht.

 North Pattaya & Wongamat

Pattaya beach bay

To the left of the Holiday Inn, the building with the green light, is Markland. I live on the 20th floor with views of Pattaya beach bay.

Looking south from Markland.

Pattaya beach bay

The opposite view from the previous photo, the building with all the lights is the Pattaya Hilton. My friend Kayoko from Tokyo is enjoying the wonderful view with a Japanese beer.

South Pattaya

Pattaya beach bay

Work stopped on this project in 2014 due to disputes over height and position.

Nothing like a little shade.

Pattaya beach bay

Anything to escape the heat.

Storm damage Pattaya beach

Pattaya beach bay

This is a very common sight during the wet season.

Ok, lets fix it

Pattaya beach bay

The rainy season in August & September plays havoc with the beach, Pattaya drains & gutters can’t handle the incredible downpours which overflow and wash away the sand.

Siam @ Siam Hotel

Pattaya beach bay

This fantastic hotel is rather unique, check it out if you get the chance.

Hilton Hotel Pattaya

Pattaya beach bay

The Hilton is in the prime position on Beach Road and they charge accordingly.

North Pattaya

Pattaya beach bay

Looking north at low tide in August with the high rise buildings at Wongamat on the left.

In the distance is Thailands main port, Laem Chabang.

Wongamat

Wongamat beach, in the centre is the luxury Condo “The Cove” and to the left is Cape Dara hotel.

Beach Rd sculpture

Pattaya beach bay

The Beach Rd sculpture shows several seagulls, I have lived opposite the beach for several years and have never seen a seagull here, lots of pigeons but no seagulls. 🙂

Beautiful clouds over Pattaya Beach Bay.

What an amazing sunset, it only covers half the beach & bay.
