Hilton Pattaya five star hotel dominates the skyline in central Pattaya. Perched above Central festival shopping mall the location is perfect.

Certainly one of the best locations in Thailand to watch the magnificent sunsets while enjoying a cocktail.

The Hilton Pattaya is in a perfect location opposite the beach and above Pattaya’s best shopping malls. Central Festival has a huge amount of restaurants and shops so you never really have to leave the building.

Pattaya – Hua Hin Mini Van

If you are in Pattaya and want to go to Hua Hin there is now a daily minivan service, they have offices in Pattaya, Hua Hin and Cha Am, for Hua Hin the mini van leaves at 8:00, 10:00, 12:00 and takes 4 hours to get to Hua Hin, priced at only 400baht.

The Pattaya office is on South Pattaya Road, if your heading towards Sukhumvit road go over 3rd Road and past Soi Ko Pai/ Soi Bongkot and it’s on the left hand side at soi 10, which is around 300 meters or more from Sukhumvit Road.

Holiday Inn Pattaya Beach Road, opposite the Beach in North Pattaya. Consisting of two huge towers, several swimming pools and all the usual five star facilities. The tower on the left opened in October 2009 and the one on the right in August 2014.

Great location

Away from the crowds and madness of south Pattaya the location is more peaceful and quiet yet only a 10 Baht bus ride to get to the action.

Just north of Pattaya is Wongamat where there are some nice bars and restaurants.

This is one of my favourite places in Pattaya for coffee and cake. At 7pm they offer sandwiches, cakes & pies at 1/2 price.

An exciting place to live

Pattaya beach bay & city views is a collection of photos from Pattaya bay & the surrounding area. Here’s what I see each day from my condo, best view I have had from any of my previous homes.

From July for a few months we get very low tides and the beach looks better than it really is.

Chinese tourists boarding the boats

Every day they line up in their hundreds to go Para Sailing and to visit Koh Larn island.

This sight is repeated every day of the year on Pattaya beach bay.

Bali Hi Wharf south Pattaya

In the background the building under construction is now 50 floors high (as of September 2014) Currently shrouded under controversy due to alleged unauthorized changes to the original plan.

Ferry to Koh Larn

A cheaper way to get to Koh Larn is by ferry from south Pattaya, a 40 minute ride for 30 Baht.

North Pattaya & Wongamat

To the left of the Holiday Inn, the building with the green light, is Markland. I live on the 20th floor with views of Pattaya beach bay.

The opposite view from the previous photo, the building with all the lights is the Pattaya Hilton. My friend Kayoko from Tokyo is enjoying the wonderful view with a Japanese beer.

Work stopped on this project in 2014 due to disputes over height and position.

Nothing like a little shade.

Anything to escape the heat.

This is a very common sight during the wet season.

Ok, lets fix it

The rainy season in August & September plays havoc with the beach, Pattaya drains & gutters can’t handle the incredible downpours which overflow and wash away the sand.

This fantastic hotel is rather unique, check it out if you get the chance.

The Hilton is in the prime position on Beach Road and they charge accordingly.

In the distance is Thailands main port, Laem Chabang.

Wongamat beach, in the centre is the luxury Condo “The Cove” and to the left is Cape Dara hotel.

The Beach Rd sculpture shows several seagulls, I have lived opposite the beach for several years and have never seen a seagull here, lots of pigeons but no seagulls. 🙂

Unique Pattaya hotel Siam @ Siam is totally fascinating, I don’t often write a post on a single hotel but Siam @ Siam is so architecturally different it is worth sharing. Perched on the corner of Soi 2 & 2nd Rd North Pattaya across the road from Big C shopping mall.

Each night they show movies on a huge screen so you can relax on a comfortable lounge with a cocktail and watch a movie under the stars at Pattaya hotel Siam @ Siam.

I dine at the Big Fish every week, they serve the best lamb Massaman curry I have ever had.

THEY USE A SLOW COOKED LAMB SHANK, THE MEAT LITERALLY FALLS OFF THE BONE, DELICIOUS. Pattaya is a city with endless choices of great food & restaurants.

Possibly the best known Thai dish in the world, beautifully presented at Siam @ Siam.

If you look over Oay’s shoulder you will see the sculpture of a guy holding a big fish, you got it, that’s where the restaurant name came from. 🙂

Pattaya Best Sunsets Thailand are from my balcony overlooking the gulf of Thailand or from Horizon bar on the top floor of the Hilton, I am so lucky as I see so many from my Pattaya condo. The one above was August 18 2013. Very orange in colour compared with the purple below.

Pattaya Ladyboys Kathoeys, not girls, boys. They seem to be everywhere in Thailand. Often when you see a beautiful tall Thai girl it turns out to be a boy. 🙂

If you want to see beautiful ladyboys, go to Tiffany; but if you want to see a great show, head over to Alcazar. Pattaya has made good of its long-time love affair with ladyboys. Extravagant costumes, convincingly stunning ladyboys, spectacular stage sets are all part of a grander show that delights you with non-stop fantastic entertainment, from the Russian stage to K-Pop to Persian harlem and even outer space. Whether you are in for the beautiful ‘ladies’ or the show, you’ll get your money worth at Alcazar.

Ladyboys in Thailand are also known as Kathoeys, Australian scholar of sexual politics in Thailand Peter Jackson claims that the term “kathoey” was used in premodern times to refer to intersex people, and that the usage changed in the middle of the twentieth century to cover cross-dressing males. The term can refer to males who exhibit varying degrees of femininity – many kathoeys dress as women and undergo “feminising” medical procedures such as breast implants, hormones, silicone injections, or Adam’s apple reductions. Others may wear makeup and use feminine pronouns, but dress as men, and are closer to the Western category of effeminate gay man than transgender.

Please remember what you have probably already read in the press, hiring a jet ski is flirting with danger, 80% of the operators are running scams, when you return the ski they will claim you have damaged it and try to extort huge sums of money from you. Sadly many police are part of these scams as well, they will pretend they are on your side and negotiate the asking price down from say 60,000 Baht ($2,000) to 20,000 Baht, in Thailand unfortunately they have turned corruption into an art form. However it is no worse than Indonesia, India or Brazil, so just be careful.

First trip Pattaya 1980

First trip Pattaya 1980 with my good friend Rob Symonds. We stayed at the Royal Cliff Hotel which had only been open for 2 years. The photo of the long-tail boat in the header was taken in May 2014 however the fishing boats in 1980 were virtuously the same design, as you will see in this post.

Pattaya Thailand March 1980 was like visiting a sleepy fishing village. Even before the start of the Vietnam War, American GIs had put Pattaya on the map as the best beach destination to unwind and indulge. But when large numbers of troops began to arrive at the neighbouring Ban Sattahip Air Base in 1968, things really picked up in Pattaya. Also known as U-Tapao International Airport, the army base at Sattahip was heavily staffed and used by the US Air Force throughout the Vietnam conflict.

Prior to jet skis

Notice that well before jet skis the little speed boats were powered by a 25 hp engine.

It all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29th June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn, thus opening Pandora’s Box for this sleepy fishing village. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to the concrete sprawl of Bangkok.

The beach was very natural on my first trip to Pattaya in in 1980, hardly any deck chairs & umbrellas.

To say walking St was different is an understatement, I have seen this photo of mine used many times in the local press & blogs, however I did take it & you can see my friend Rob Symonds walking towards me.

Royal Cliff Hotel 1980

The Royal Cliff was the most modern hotel in Pattaya in 1980. On fact it had a ten pin bowling alley and above that was a body to body soapy massage parlour, my first introduction to that particular pleasure.

Life did not get much better than this on our first trip to Pattaya.

Sadly however I soon discovered she was a LadyBoy, remember this was my first trip to Thailand & it took me a couple of days to work out who were the females & who were not. 🙂

Russian babes Pattaya Beach Club at the Pullman hotel, this is the best beach-side bar in Pattaya for Russian beach babes. Happy hour is at 5 pm every day & cocktails cost about $3.

The bikini is a perfect fit

One of my favorite pastime is watching the Russian beach babes walking along the beach while I’m drinking a nice cold beer.

Every time friends come to town or if someone has a birthday we wind up at the Beach Club. The big fellow 2nd from the left is Nathan Corbett who has been world champion in Muay Thai boxing 11 times in 3 different weight divisions.

OK I did get sprung taking photos of this gorgeous Russian babe. However her boyfriend looked a bit of a wuss and I was with my English friend Bill, an ex para military regiment leader who used to be on the boxing team, and still does some bouncing at a couple of venues in Trowbridge. 🙂
