Please remember what you have probably already read in the press, hiring a jet ski is flirting with danger, 80% of the operators are running scams, when you return the ski they will claim you have damaged it and try to extort huge sums of money from you. Sadly many police are part of these scams as well, they will pretend they are on your side and negotiate the asking price down from say 60,000 Baht ($2,000) to 20,000 Baht, in Thailand unfortunately they have turned corruption into an art form. However it is no worse than Indonesia, India or Brazil, so just be careful.

First trip Pattaya 1980

First trip Pattaya 1980 with my good friend Rob Symonds. We stayed at the Royal Cliff Hotel which had only been open for 2 years. The photo of the long-tail boat in the header was taken in May 2014 however the fishing boats in 1980 were virtuously the same design, as you will see in this post.

Pattaya Thailand March 1980 was like visiting a sleepy fishing village. Even before the start of the Vietnam War, American GIs had put Pattaya on the map as the best beach destination to unwind and indulge. But when large numbers of troops began to arrive at the neighbouring Ban Sattahip Air Base in 1968, things really picked up in Pattaya. Also known as U-Tapao International Airport, the army base at Sattahip was heavily staffed and used by the US Air Force throughout the Vietnam conflict.

Prior to jet skis

Notice that well before jet skis the little speed boats were powered by a 25 hp engine.

It all started when a group of 500 American soldiers stationed at the military base in Korat were driven to Pattaya on 29th June 1959 for a week of rest and relaxation (R&R). They rented several houses at the southern end of the beach from a prominent Thai, Lord Sunthorn, thus opening Pandora’s Box for this sleepy fishing village. Despite their short stay, the GIs had a great time and raved about the place. The word spread among other American soldiers stationed in the region and Pattaya quickly became a hot alternative to the concrete sprawl of Bangkok.

The beach was very natural on my first trip to Pattaya in in 1980, hardly any deck chairs & umbrellas.

To say walking St was different is an understatement, I have seen this photo of mine used many times in the local press & blogs, however I did take it & you can see my friend Rob Symonds walking towards me.

Royal Cliff Hotel 1980

The Royal Cliff was the most modern hotel in Pattaya in 1980. On fact it had a ten pin bowling alley and above that was a body to body soapy massage parlour, my first introduction to that particular pleasure.

Sadly however I soon discovered she was a LadyBoy, remember this was my first trip to Thailand & it took me a couple of days to work out who were the females & who were not. 🙂

Sexy Phuket LadyBoys & Thai girls when I was there with my friend John Sinclair in July 2005. This was only 6 months after the Tsunami disaster that took so many lives.

OK, lets start with the LadyBoys

Sexy Phuket LadyBoys & Thai girls, it is amazing how many transgenders there are in Thailand where society totally accepts them without question or prejudice. Kathoey or katoey is a Thai term that refers to either a transgender woman or an effeminate gay male in Thailand. While a significant number of Thais perceive kathoeys as belonging to a third gender, including many kathoeys themselves, others see them as either a kind of man or a kind of woman. Related phrases include sao (or phuying) praphet song (Thai: สาวประเภทสอง,”a second kind of woman”) and phet thi sam (Thai: เพศที่สาม, “third gender”). The word kathoey is of Khmer origin. It is most often rendered as ladyboy or lady boy in English conversation with Thais and this latter expression has become popular across South East Asia.

You are looking the wrong way John.

My friend John seems to be enjoying himself way too much. 🙂 Ladyboys really are quite prominent in Thailand and are seemingly accepted by society, not only in the cities but in the countrysides as well. It seems as though it is the relaxed attitude of acceptance and tolerance in Buddhism that keeps people from shunning their lifestyles, although many other Buddhist countries are not as willing to accept a ladyboy living their life in public. Thai Buddhism specifically does not regard homosexuality as a sin and has no specific prohibitions regarding their lifestyle. Though Kathoey continually face discrimination they are gaining acceptance and have made themselves a very distinct part of the Thai society; however, they still have not yet attained equal status with those who are not transgender. There are many restrictions that come with the identity, one being the inability to marry someone of the same sex, another not being able to officially change their birth sex on birth certificates or passports.

Now I’m really worried about him

Perhaps I should rush off and grab a bucket of cold water to throw on him, then again the LadyBoys would probably beat me to death. 🙂

Lets move the emphasis to the female of the species

Thailand is famous for the girly bars, discos & pole dancing, you don’t have to go to Nana Plaza in Bangkok as the main street in Patong offers quite a large selection of places where you can get into all sorts of trouble.

The one on the left we nick-named the Bull-ant.

The one on the left we nick-named the Bull-ant because she was so feisty and confident, the girl on the right had a bandaged knee obviously due to falling off a motorbike which is a common occurrence in Thailand.

This girl was absolutely gorgeous, and yes she did look so much better when she smiled.

It’s very hard not to have fun in Thailand, thousands of beautiful are on hand to make sure you do. I actually live in Pattaya just south of Bangkok but I always enjoy visiting the islands, Phuket, Koh Samui & Koh Chang.

Pattaya – Hua Hin Mini Van

If you are in Pattaya and want to go to Hua Hin there is now a daily minivan service, they have offices in Pattaya, Hua Hin and Cha Am, for Hua Hin the mini van leaves at 8:00, 10:00, 12:00 and takes 4 hours to get to Hua Hin, priced at only 400baht.

The Pattaya office is on South Pattaya Road, if your heading towards Sukhumvit road go over 3rd Road and past Soi Ko Pai/ Soi Bongkot and it’s on the left hand side at soi 10, which is around 300 meters or more from Sukhumvit Road.

Pattaya Beach Road morning Ballet may be a slight exaggeration, however there is enough material along this stretch for a director to produce 10 ballets. Every morning I walk along Pattaya beach and marvel at the unusual sights, it surely is a page out of life’s rich tapestry.

I walk every day along the beach and take in the sights, have breakfast, read the Bangkok Post then walk back home.

Strangely enough I have never seen a seagull on Pattaya Beach Rd, lots of pigeons but no seagulls.

April & May are the two hottest months in Thailand, it is also the time when tides are very low so the beach looks so much better with more sand showing.

Every morning they head for Koh Larn.

Many hundreds of tourists take the boats out to Koh Larn for a day at the beach, most of them return very sunburnt.

Most morning I tale a 25 minute walk to see the latest Pattaya Beach Road Ballet.

Wot! No chairs or umbrellas?

At last there are some sections of the beach without umbrellas, chairs or greedy unfriendly vendors. Not all of them are unfriendly but many are. There are still lots of umbrellas those people like me who don’t want to sit in the direct sun.

It’s a never ending job repairing the beach in the wet season.

Personally I would not do this because I don’t trust the Thai boat drivers, there are always a few people killed each year due to their incompetence.

It really doesn’t matter they are travelling the wrong way in a one way street, after all this is Pattaya Beach Rd.

The busses are bringing Chinese tourists to the beach where they crawl aboard the waiting boats to go para-sailing & visit Koh Larn. Since the August 17 bombing in Bangkok and the Shanghai share-market plunge, now in September 2015 it seems the tourists numbers from China have fallen by up to 50%. However now in 2016 they are back in force.

Every day of the year thousands of Chinese tourists head for the boats. This one is grossly overpowered, around 750 HP.

Good to see the lad and his father wearing crash helmets, riding on the footpath can be quite dangerous when selfish pedestrians think they have “right of way”. 🙂

Jet Ski scammers

Along the Beach Road in Pattaya, often between Soi 10 and Soi 13/4 (entrance to Walking Street), Thai Jet Ski touts will approach the tourist. Most likely time to witness the scam unfolding would be between 5pm – 5:30pm as it is getting dark. Particularly outside Mike Shopping Mall, Royal Garden Plaza, and Soi 13/2 to Soi 13/4. The tourist is required to sign a contract with the Jet Ski operators before they board the Jet Ski and have their fun. Cost is around 700 baht ($20) for thirty minutes. When the tourist returns to the beach the Thai Jet Ski operator will board the Jet Ski and bring it up on to the beach. Here is where the scam starts, as they (theatrically and dramatically) point out the damage and demand that the tourist pay for it, typically ranging anywhere from 30,000 baht ($950) to 70,000 baht ($2,200), but it can be 100,000 baht ($3,180) and up. Of course this damage (deep scrapes on the underside of the Jet Ski, scratches to the paintwork, or a broken plastic bumper) has been there all the time. Often, if not most times, it is a group of tourists that are scammed. More people, more money.

If they use the version of the scam where the tourist boards the Jet Ski when it is already submerged in the water, thus hiding the damage that is already on the underside, the scammers don’t need to cover the damaged areas. The damage is revealed once they bring it on to the shore after the tourist has rented it. More government warnings etc here.

Be careful, you have been warned.

Bangkok Post September 9th 2015

At the emergency meeting in August 2015, Pol. Maj. Piyapong was reported in local media saying that his office received numerous complaints from scam victims that first went to the Pattaya police station only to be ignored. The same press reports also showed that, as far back as 2011, Pattaya mayor Itthiphol Kunpleum said Pattaya’s police were part of the jet ski problem, with corrupt officers assisting scammers… I hope you can now understand what I mean when I call it Pattaya Beach Rd ballet. 🙂

Babushkas Bikinis Pattaya beach is obviously a “tongue in cheek” look at some very overweight European ladies enjoying the beautiful Thailand sunshine. Please don’t be offended, it is simply part of life’s rich pageant, if you want to see some more glamorous beach babes have a look at my Brazilian post or Russian post.

Kantary Hotel Kabinburi Golf Course is rather special, particularly if you are a golfer. The standard of the hotel is fantastic & the golf package can’t be beat. For 3000 Baht or $90 usd, which sadly is now $104 aud, you get 2 18 hole rounds of golf on the magnificent Kabinburi Sport Club which proudly boasts of being the longest course in Thailand. Add to that one nights accommodation & breakfast included, makes this the best value golf package in Thailand.

If that was not enough the three of us were all upgraded to a wonderful one bedroom suite which is the best hotel accommodation I have ever seen anywhere in the country.

Super value at Kantary Hotel Kabinburi.

The kantary hotel has excellent food and a nice selection of wine. Imported Australian beef was cooked to perfection & washed down with the house wine from South Africa. There is also a Japanese & Chinese menu as well, however the Chinese may only be on offer for their lunar new year.

Without a doubt AGODA is the best online Hotel booking site.

Lets talk about the golf course.

The longest course is quite magnificent, very tough for hackers like myself but an excellent workout for the more skilled golfers. 6652 yards long from the white tees up to a monster 8075 from the championship tees. The condition of the course is quite remarkable, by far the best fairways I have ever played on, and the greens are groomed beautifully. If you enjoy your golf the Kabinburi Sport Club is a must to play, make sure you book the hotel package for the best value.

Beautiful bougainvillea decorates many of the greens and there is plenty of water waiting to gobble up your brand new golf balls.

I spent so much time in the sand traps on the back nine my friends were calling me Lawrence of Arabia.

The greens were perfect, very fast but fairly easy to read, of course the caddies make putting an easier task as they know them backwards. This photo gives you an idea of just how perfect the greens are.

The excellent driving range & pro shop is beside the main road, they have a bus to take you and your clubs to the course.

We all agree the whole experience was quite special, Kantary Hotel Kabinburi a great hotel & staff & a terrific golf course. To borrow a General MacArthur quote, “we will return.”

Thailand amazing street food culture is a great way to eat, very cheap and lots of choices. This market in 2nd rd North Pattaya is only 5 minutes walk from my condo.

Prawns & scallops.

Really well cooked fresh food, these two dishes cost me 300 Baht or $10.

So many decisions to make. 🙄

The Thai people have taken street cooking to an art form. Most Thai’s in fact eat out on the street rather than cook at home.

Fantastic ribs

These pork ribs are so good they are addictive. 150 Baht per rack and I always take a couple home to snack on the following day.

Thailand street food comes in all forms however I must admit I still can’t convince myself to eat bugs or insects.

The girls at the market will kill , clean & gut fish while you wait.

Great food served here for lunch & dinner. The only downside at night are the exhaust fumes from the dozens of busses leaving the car park.

Street seafood, delicious.

Lots of seafood in Koh Larn which is a 30 Baht, 30 minute ferry ride from Pattaya.

BBQ fish, calamari & prawns.

Is it any wonder Thailand street food is famous throughout the world? In Thailand street & market food is everywhere so you don’t have to walk too far for dinner.

Corner of 2nd rd & Soi 1 opposite Big C shopping mall. The Empress has excellent rooms at a reasonable price in a very good location. Book the the Sabai Empress here.

The Pullman hotel

Wongamat has a far nicer nicer beach than Pattaya, check out the Pullman Hotel. Their Beach club is a great bar with a happy hour every day from 5 to 7 pm. Excellent seafood buffet Friday & Saturday night. The Pullman is really a 3.5 star hotel in a 5 star location, & probably should not be in my Pattaya budget hotels section.

A-One hotel Beach Rd

This is a very popular hotel with 2 pools and a seafood buffet every night, however it is a little more upmarket than most Pattaya budget hotels. Fantastic location opposite the beach, book A-One hotel here.

Markland is beside the holiday Inn on Beach Road

Markland is a condo with 4 floors of hotel rooms, I would rate it 2.5 stars being a little generous as I actually live in the building. Ask for a room on the south side for the best view in Pattaya. Book Markland here.

Without a doubt this is the best view in Pattaya.

World famous Walking St.

Walking St is where tourists go to gawk at the passing parade. Hundreds of go go bars restaurants & girls, girls, girls, & lets not forget the Ladyboys. 😳 So if you are a single guy who wants good value budget hotels right in the action the Galaxy is the place for you. Only $40 pn & right above one of Pattaya’s best pole dancing clubs, Heaven Above. To get a great deal on your hotel have a look at these great deals.

The Gentlemen’s Club Soi Diamond.

The Gentlemen’s club is my favourite Go Go bar, great looking girls and friendly hosts Robbie & Hamish. I’m sure if you say David sent you they will buy you a drink. Update, the boys have sold the club to some Russian guys, still worth a visit however.

Billabong in LK Metro 1.5 star

One of the good value Pattaya budget hotels for single guys & only $25 pn is The Billabong in LK Metro. This area is the choice for local guys who don’t want to mix with all the Walking St tourists. 1.5 to 2 star in a great location for beer & go-go bars. book the Billabong hotel here.

Soi Buakow area

The Soi Buakow is a budget area and a very popular part of Pattaya, lots of bars & restaurants. The Sawasdee Siam is a two star hotel in the middle of the action. Book the Sawasdee here.

Sutus Court is great value

Rooms are around $30 pr night and the location is close to the LK Metro action. Book Sutus Court here.

Pattaya beach side dining, restaurants are found north & south of central Pattaya. The Beach Club is a great spot to dine and watch the magnificent sunsets.

Tapas at the Beach Club

For lunch there is a choice of Tapas, Club sandwiches & Thai food at very reasonable prices. Friday & Saturday nights they offer a very good seafood buffet.

Food & cocktails on the beach

Happy hour is 5pm to 7pm every day, cocktails are only 110 Baht or $4. 😎 When is comes to Pattaya Thailand beach side food wine there is no better place than the beach club.

There is no better value in Pattaya for dinner in a beautiful location, happy hour cocktails at 110 Baht ($4) followed by their incredible BBQ seafood buffet for 990 Bath ($35).

This is my favourite place to enjoy a drink and watch the sunset.

Great spot to relax and either swim in the ocean or the pool.

A very good selection of food here at reasonable prices for a five star hotel.

Pattaya beach side dining

One of the nicest spots in Pattaya for a lazy lunch.

Rimpa Lapin

One of the best places for Pattaya beach side dining is Rimpa Lapin. Perched on the side of a cliff this multi level Thai restaurant with beautiful garden offers very good food at reasonable prices. It is actually a 25 minute journey from Pattaya, we usually hire a mini bus for 1000 Baht or $30, he takes us there, waits a couple of hours while we eat then drives us back home.

From the lest is Denis Freemongrel from Adelaide in Australia, he now lives in Pattaya, Bill Austin from Wiltshire in England, my two lovely nieces Elyssa & Laura & their father Warren, my brother from Australia.

There is a huge choice on the menu & you can choose a view of the beach or the garden.

Laura loved the Tom Yum but the serving was way too big. Tom yum or tom yam is a spicy clear soup typical in Laos and Thailand. Tom yum is widely served in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, and has been popularized around the world.

Well worth the 35 minute drive from Pattaya.

The Glasshouse.

The Glasshouse is in a a beautiful location right on the beach about 20 minutes drive from Pattaya.

Let me tell you 3 rules to follow in Thailand. (1) Never give a Thai lady a microphone in a department store. She will screech loudly so she can be heard 2 kilometres away. (2) Never give a Thai man a uniform & a whistle in a car park. He takes on such an air of self importance he will send you around the bend with shrill non stop whistling. (3) Finally never ask a Thai lady to order the food at a restaurant if she knows you are paying. There will be three times more food than you can eat.

The boys celebrate their 10 year company anniversary, no better place than Pattaya Thailand beach side food wine at the Glasshouse.

Drifters Cafe

This little gem is just a couple of kms north of the Glasshouse, I had an Aussie pie at this quaint little lay-back beach bar at Na Jomtien. The pie & the red wine was Ok, the beer was cold, perhaps the service left a bit to be desired, but totally in keeping with the casual atmosphere, certainly no complaints from anyone in our group.

As well as Aussie pies they specialise in wood fired pizzas plus many other interesting dishes.

Great spot to watch the sunset, Pattaya beachside dining is one of the great joys of living in this fascinating city.
