Weekend Bangkok May 2016

Weekend Bangkok May 2016 included visiting new restaurants, sky bars & shopping malls. It’s nice to have a break from Pattaya which is where I live 2 hours south of Bangkok.

Dinner at Via Vai

My friend Hamish Elton and I in Soi 8 eating Italian food which was ok without making you want to rush back.

Via Vai is opposite Monsoon which is one of my favourite Bangkok restaurants.

The Game sports bar

On Sukhumvit beside Nana station this bar has lots of screens showing all the sports. A separate smoking area overlooks the footpath which spares the drinkers inside the bar. The header to this post is a favourite shot of mine that was taken at “The Game”, I call it Minnesota Fats racking them up. 🙂

At best it was barely average, next time I’ll try something different.

Now if it’s good food you want…..

A terrific new Bangkok restaurant, the Pirate Chambre at Chidlom. Hard to find but worth the effort. The fabulous lamb shank was only B480.

A very busy intersection, you can see the building where the Long Table sky bar Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke.

A very good breakfast and the coffee is excellent. Plus I have a 20% discount card.

Every now and then I take a photo I really like, this is one of those. It was taken at “The Game”, sports bar in Nana and I call it “Minnesota Fats racking them up.” 🙂

Central Embassy Shopping Mall Bangkok

Central Embassy Shopping Mall Bangkok in Chidlom is full of high end designer stores, all the famous labels are here. There is direct access from two sky train stations, Chidlom and Ploenchit. It is also connected to Central Chidlom which is their flagship store.

Amazing architecture

Everything about Central Embassy oozes class & luxury, some of the many labels include Versace, Gucci, Prada, Givenchy and many more, in other words it’s way above my pay grade. 🙂

From memory according to Merryl Streep the devil wears it. A great friend of mine in Australia often refers to his wife as “The Prada Princess”, that’s ok because he can afford her expensive tastes.

And the beat goes on

I remember visiting the spot where Versace was shot dead in 1997 on the steps of his Miami home. Fifty is way too young to die.

A word of warning to my male friends, don’t tell your wife about Central Embassy Shopping Mall.

There are many of these converted VWs where I live in Pattaya, what a great idea. No way you could do it in Australia, far too many ridiculous rules and regulations. 🙂

Central Embassy Shopping Mall has a great feel about it, uncluttered and luxurious, I have a lot more to investigate on my next Bangkok visit.

Another wonderful design the Park Hyatt hotel above Central Embassy is expected to open late 2016. Central Embassy will be hoping they will bring potential customers as their traffic since opening has been disappointing.

Great Bangkok bar

Long Table sky bar Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke. Walk in the door and this is the fabulous view of Bangkok. Obviously not as high as many of the Bangkok sky bars but still offers an incredible view of this great city. Photo credit Asia Web Direct.

Only a ten minute walk from Asoke station which is beside Terminal 21 shopping mall.

Best to arrive before sunset to fully appreciate the changing view as the sun sets.

One of my favourite pastimes is to watch the sunset over the Big Mango while sipping an ice cold Carlsberg.

The city starts to light up, this was Sunday May 15 2016, during the week the view is better at night as more lights are on in the buildings.

There is actually a Red Sky bar in Bangkok, it is one of the most spectacular views in the city, just follow THIS LINK.

It is a very long table.

It is easy to see why they call it the Long Table sky bar Bangkok.

A wonderful Bangkok food hall

Central food hall Bangkok is quite fantastic, smaller perhaps than other bigger malls close by however the quality and presentation is first class.

Central has several department store branches in Bangkok, Chidlom however is their flagship store and attracts many expats and “well to do” Thai shoppers.

BBQ duck is delicious at Four Seasons

It does not get much better than this, there is another branch just up the road at the Siam Paragon.

So many great food choices here and so little time. 🙂

Did I mention the choices?

The number of restaurant choices here is staggering, there are over 50 listed here, there are even cooking classes you can attend.

What a terrific display at this specialty Bavarian food stall, you just have to buy something.

It really is a pleasure to shop or eat here, everything is presented beautifully.

If you can’t find something that suits you here you are just not trying. Wines from all the great regions of the world are on sale here.

Many years ago in Sydney Australia I owned a liquor store, believe me it was nothing like you see here. In those days I would store my favourite reds until it was the right time to drink them and what an incredible difference that made.

I sometimes visit friends of mine in Australia who have a vineyard, now that is a lot of fun, follow this link to see what I mean.

The Central seven story building is dwarfed by a number of modern buildings opposite on Sukhumvit road.

Pattaya Bay Beach Resort Thailand

Pattaya Bay Beach Resort Thailand is a city two hours south of Bangkok. My first visit was 37 years ago in 1980 and after many trips over the years since then I decided to move here from Australia in October 2011. Without a doubt it was the right decision given how expensive the cost of living in Australia has become. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Australia with a passion, however at my age Thailand offers a better lifestyle at an affordable price.

The following photos and video were taken from the naval base on Pratumnak Hill beside the communication tower you can see in the centre of the above photo.

A perfect view of Pattaya Bay stretching all the way to Wongamat which is the next beach to the north.

Waterfront condo

Construction was halted in 2014 due to alleged anomalies in the building specifications and planning permits. Nobody seems to have any idea if and when work will re-commence.

In late 2016 it was reported they have to now remove the top 8 floors of the building.

Bali Hai pier

Just below the view point is Bali Hai pier where for B30 you can take a ferry to Koh Larn where there are some excellent beaches and clean water.

The ferries to Koh Larn run about every 39 minutes from 10 am.

Admiral HRH Prince of Chumphon

Admiral HRH Prince of Chumphon(also written as ‘Jumborn‘) is the man who is referred to as the ‘Father of the Royal Thai Navy’.

As you can see there is a lot of construction under way in Pratamnak.

A building boom

Well if it’s not a building boom I’m not sure how you would describe it in May 2016.

The sunsets in Pattaya Bay Beach Resort are as spectacular as anything I have seen in this world, as are the tropical storms.

During the wet season which is May to November these fierce storms roll in over the bay often causing severe damage to the beach. Follow this link to see the aftermath of Vamco in 2015.

Best Pattaya butcher Big C Extra

Best Pattaya butcher Big C Extra in Pattaya Klang. Thai beef & lamb leaves a lot to be desired compared to Australia & New Zealand, and here at Big C they offer great quality imported meat at similar prices to what you would pay in Australia. Perhaps the price may be 10 or 15% more however I am happy to pay a premium to get the beat product.

I don’t eat a lot of steak these days preferring to focus on lamb cutlets, chops and the huge lamb shanks here at Big C Extra.

A lot can change in 5 years

It’s now 2021 & Aussie lamb prices have gone through the roof. Currently B1,590 a kilo, up from B950 in 2016.

Thankfully the cost of living in Pattaya has not risen too much, for some examples just follow THIS LINK.

Lamb Shanks

These two shanks weigh 1.2 kilo for B550 or $20 aud. I either roast them or use a slow cooker, either way they are delicious. The good news is they are so large I get two meals out of each shank, I always bake extra vegetables so the following day lunch is cold roast lamb with bubble and squeak, life does not get much better than that. 🙂

Here are my friends Larry Krausz and Hamish Elton enjoying roast lamb shanks with vegetables & washed down with red wine from Australia.

Sadly we lost Larry in January 2016 after he suffered a major stroke, RIP buddy.

A slow cooked shank with a view

The view from my condo on the 20th floor of Markland in Beach Road Pattaya. After slow cooking for around 5 hours the meat just falls off the bone.

Roast lamb shank & vegetables with Gravox and red wine.

My standard order which gives me six great meals for B800 or $32 aud. The chops are so thick I only need to cook two with some vegetables and gravy.

Mezzo coffee Markland Condo Pattaya has become a favourite place for me to get away from my computer. I live on the 17th floor of Markland and often spend too much time banging on the keyboard producing new photo FiveStarVagabond blogs. So when I need a break I head down for coffee and to chat and have fun with the lovely young girls who work there.

Always smiling

The girls are always happy and smiling, it is a pleasure to walk in and share some jokes with them. The coffee and the cakes are very good also. 🙂

They offer quite a variety of snacks, Mezzo is a Thai group of shops, there is another branch at the rear of Mike shopping mall.

The cakes are my downfall

Sadly I find it hard to resist the selection of cakes and cookies, oh well I guess I have to maintain my 110 kilograms.

I try to limit myself to a cake every 2nd visit, I don’t always succeed. 🙂

How lucky am I?

Here is the view from my condo on the 20th floor, I never tire of looking at this wonderful vista. However as I said before when I want a break from the computer I slip down to Mezzo for a coffee and cake.

Harbor new Pattaya Shopping Mall

Harbor new Pattaya Shopping Mall next to Foodland in Pattaya Klang. A huge complex with lots of shops & restaurants plus a modern supermarket. The photo above was taken in October 2015 while it was still under construction.

The centre is 90% completed, bigger than Big C and lots of screaming kids. Many good Japanese restaurants and all the usual coffee shops.

Being school holidays there were kids everywhere.

Their latte is hard to beat as is their eggs Benedict. 🙂 Au Bon Pain and Coffee world are here also.

I was impressed how big the centre was plus the supermarket was excellent. Lots of car parking at the rear of the building.

Postal service

Many different shops as you would expect.

Tokyo Teppanyaki

I was surprised at the number of Japanese restaurants here.

Another Japanese restaurant.

I’m guessing there must be a lot of Japanese people living in the area because of the number of Japanese restaurants here. Just down the road 200 meters is Big C Extra, here you will be able to buy the best imported beef & lamb from Australia and New Zealand.

Tuna Ichiban

My friend Geoff Robinson made this comment after visiting Tuna Ichiban, “Another great recommendation David Herd best sushi I’ve had in Thailand”.

Harbor new Pattaya Shopping Mall

Apart from this monster there is a huge kids playground on the top floor, make sure you take your earplugs. There is also two floors of phones and computers similar to Tukcom.

Jomtien Beach Pattaya south in my mind used to be Pattaya’s poor cousin, well times have changed. There are many people who prefer to live in this quieter area on the Thai coast rather than busy gridlocked Pattaya beach. The beach stretches for miles & miles and the water is much cleaner than Pattaya bay.

Relax in the shade

Sabai sabai means relax in Thai, one of about 10 words I know the meaning of. I have only been living in Thailand five years so that equates to 2 words a year, hmm I guess I’m a little slow. 🙂

Building boom

The first couple of photos may have given the impression of a sleepy backwater, well nothing could be further from the truth, High rise condos and hotels are exploding on the skyline. This monster has the unfortunate name of Cetus which always reminds me of part of the female anatomy.

Jomtiensaineung Road

Chom Tian is the name you will often see on road signs, located 165 km south-east of Bangkok and a few minutes south of Pattaya.

Lots of restaurants

The beach is about 6 kms long and there are many restaurants opposite where you can enjoy the sunset and the sea breeze.

Indian, Italian, French and many others.

So many restaurants and so little time.

Natan’s is my favourite

Put Naten’s on your bucket list, it is in my top 6 restaurants in Pattaya and Jomtien. The food and décor is exceptional and rather inexpensive

Drifters Beach Cafe

A little further south overlooking the beach is a nice little cafe bar where you can enjoy a cocktail or a pizza while watching the beautiful sunset.

You really need a car to get to Drifters cafe.

Pattaya life 2016

Pattaya life 2016, this is my 5 year in this city by the beach. Why is it the older you get the faster time seems to go? The photo above is the coffee shop at the front of my condo where I go for a daily caffeine hit and sometimes a blueberry cheesecake to go with it. I have decided to slow down on my travel this year due to over spending in 2015. I have some smaller trips planned and another Japan visit in October.

In fact I purchased a two week ticket on the Shinkansen or bullet train, then after 3 nights in Tokyo I travelled to 6 interesting Japanese cities, includung Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Nagasaki & Fukuoka.

This is not a travel blog just a personal photo collection from the 1st half of 2016. Part 2 will commence July 1st.

Larry Krausz and Hamish Elton

I invited two of my friends over for dinner, roasted Australian lamb shanks with baked vegetables. Washed down with Australian red wine which I buy here for B300 ($12) for a 2 litre bottle.

Larry Krausz, a friend for around 30 years suffered a major stroke on October 28 2017. After 2 months in the Bangkok Pattaya hospital on life support he was transported to Australia by a hospital Leer jet, thanks to his Medibank travel insurance. After a further month his life support was removed & he passed away peacefully.

This part of Pattaya always remains the same, an endless choice of girlie bars providing anything an ageing playboy could ever ask for.

The neon lights of Walking Street

Still the main Pattaya tourist attraction, however I would only visit 2 or 3 times a year, mainly when friends come from overseas.

Don’t take it the wrong way, Gordon Shanks from New York and Jonathan Whiting from Brisbane are only addicted to the bright lights, gorgeous girls and exotic locations all over the world.

David Robertson on the right has been a friend for over 30 years, originally from Melbourne he moved to the Gold Coast about 40 years ago. His son Chris on the left is an Emirates pilot who lives in Dubai.

A very common sight in Pattaya, this was February 16 after a short storm.

Mum Aroi at Naklua

A very popular Naklua restaurant specialising in live seafood. Very busy on weekends so try to visit during the week.

Because of the turnover and the live product you can guarantee everything is fresh here.

Valentines day in Pattaya

The local council always find a reason to decorate the footpath on Beach Road.

I’m not sure these beach babes do much to decorate the area.

At Mae Pim

Beach Resort Mae Pim on the gulf of Thailand is only ninety minutes by car east of Pattaya, and 2 hours south of Bangkok. Beautiful white sand and clean water, and so quiet and peaceful after the noise & Madness of Pattaya.

A huge new shopping mall and hotel is being built opposite the Dolphin roundabout in North Pattaya. It will be the same brand as Terminal 21 at Asoke in Bangkok.

Hooters comes to Pattaya

Hooters Pattaya opening night was on New Years Eve 2015 so we decided to make it our first stop when seeing off the old and welcoming the new year. It’s a great addition to Beach Road and naturally has many beautiful sexy babes on the staff. Both Thai & Russian as you can clearly see.

Hooters always seem to be promoting charity events etc to publicise their great venue, check out the charity bike wash here.

Bow and her Bonds

The gorgeous girlfriend of my friend Matt Harkness, an Adelaide guy who is living the dream in Pattaya. A local website held a contest to find “Miss Love Pattaya Thailand”, heats were held at “Planet Earth Beach Club” in Jomtien. Check out my photo blogs for lots of great Thai and Russian babes competing for the B100,000 first prize.

In recent years it has improved out of sight, no longer is it a lazy beach side suburb of Pattaya. There are many new restaurants and hotels generally cheaper and quieter than Pattaya.

Long Table Bangkok

I went to Bangkok 3 times in this first six months not just for a break from Pattaya but to check out lots of great places I have never been to. I was there in January, February and May.

When I’m in Bangkok I like to stay in Sukhumvit Soi 11, here is an excellent budget hotel, if you USE THIS LINK you will get a great rate of around B1100 per night, or $30 USD.
