Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour

April 18, 2017 by David Herd

Driving south from Gosford to Sydney.

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour were all waiting for me after my leasurely drive down the east coast from Surfers Paradise in QLD.

It was a great drive down from from Surfers Paradise  to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.

The historic Roseville Cinema

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour On the road between Hornsby & Sydney is The historic Roseville Cinema on the Pacific Highway, noted for its art deco facade. It became Traynor’s Picture Palace in 1919, but did not become a full-scale cinema until 1936. Roseville Cinema was renovated & updated to two screens in 1995.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney where on a sunny weekend thousands of people head for the pubs & restaurants as well as the famous beach.

Beach or the pool

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Decisions decisions, the answer is whatever you prefer. 🙂

The pool & surf club are an iconic landmark

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney What a fabulous setting, absolutely breathtaking. Located right beside the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club.

The main attraction is the beautiful beach.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney This is around 5pm so most of the crowd have gome home or to the pub.

Rock pool at northern end of Coogee Beach.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Late afternoon as the sun sinks in the west.

Copacabana or Coogee

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Seeing the beach volley ball always reminds me of Copacabana where I have been lucky enough to visit 8 times between 1999 & 2010.

This is what brings the crowds

 photo b30bc5ef-4740-408b-8740-b4fc2117f03c.jpg Magnificent Coogee Beach.

Wonderful views from these homes.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Can you imagine how much it would cost to live here?

The average Coogee home price is $2,627,000 for a house & $1,o39,500 for a condo. However these overlooking the ocean & beach would be double that.

Here are serviced apartments for rent.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Amazing location overlooking the beach, ideal for a long stay. Use THIS LINK for an excellent room rate.

Would you prefer to stay in a Dive?

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Don’t be fooled by the name, the location is fantastic overlooking Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney. Book the Dive Hotel through THIS LINK.

The older side of Coogee

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Many parts of Coogee are quite ancient as you can see, probably worth several million as a devlopement site here in Arden Street.

This one is certainly worth preserving.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Not sure if it will be kept as a private recidence or a guest house.

Overlooking Coogee Bay

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney As you can see Coogee is quite hilly.

Important safety message

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney When on the beach in Australia make sure you always use sun blockout, wear a hat & swim between the flags.

In recent years I have had many skin cancers removed, doctors tell me the damge was done many years ago before I turned 16 years of age. In those days we NEVER wore hats or used sun protection.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

March 25, 2017 by David Herd

Sunday in Maroubra

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb located 10 klms south of the city was so busy on this beautiful sunny Sunday. Just finding a place to park the car was a major frustrating excercise.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Some of the expensive apartments overlooking the beach. In fact the average price of an apartment in Maroubra is around $850,000, however those in the photo would be more than double that. The average house price in the suburb is $1,840,000.

Here is what makes Maroubra famous

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Without a doubt Sydney’s beaches are among the best in the world. In my opinion the only country that can compare is Brazil, especially Florianopolis.

One of Sydney’s best surfing beaches.

photo 78c4c95e-9690-4c20-8bb0-43ea127655cb.jpg Everyone is waiting for a wave to ride.

The blue building is the surf club.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb You can clearly see the lookout tower where the lifesavers keep a close eye on the swimmers.

A favourite photo

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb You have the camera man, the babe doing excercises, the Bra Boy heading for the surf & a couple just watching the action.  Bra Boys are a notorious surf gang, at their home beach Maroubra.

In December 2005 riots broke out between Muslum gangs from Sydneys Western suburbs & Eastern suburbs surfers. Follow THIS LINK for details. Contrary to popular opinion I personally was proud of the Aussie surfers that day.

That’s a huge zoom lens

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb No doubt tis guy is a serious photographer. 🙂

A great family enviroment

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb What a place to grow up & to have fun on a magificent beach like Maroubra.

 Sidewalk cafes

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Similar to every other Sydney beachside suburb sidewalk cafes abound.

Dive Hotel

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb A great view from this boutique hotel overlooking Coogee Beach, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount.

Location

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

As you can see Maroubra lies south of other fanous beaches such as Bondi & Coogee.

Dover Calais Ferry

June 16, 2016 by David Herd

Uttoxeter in Staffordshire

Dover Calais Ferry Dover Calais Ferry from England to France was our starting point for our road trip to Brugge and Versailles, which finished in Brighton on the south coast of England. I was travelling with two English friends Bill Austin & Dave Catchpole, & the reason our trip started in Uttoxeter was to visit my good friend Alan Austin (Bill’s brother) who was a guest of Her Majesty for a rather major indiscretion involving transportation of a certain white powder from Spain to England.

Overnight at Maidstone

Dover Calais Ferry We stayed in the Townhouse Hotel in Maidstone which was excellent and left early for Dover, little did I realise at the time that quite a bit of tension would build up between the 3 of us over the coming days. Bill & I had been on successful road trips in the past which went as smooth as silk, however adding Dave to this trip seemed to effect the dynamics resulting in an unfortunate parting of the ways in Brighton.

First glimpse of the white cliffs

Dover Calais Ferry We really didn’t explore Dover, instead we went straight to the ferry terminal.

Waiting in the queue

Dover Calais Ferry There were certainly a lot of vehicles making the crossing.

Lots of trucks carrying freight

Dover Calais Ferry The trucks go on the ferry first then the private vehicles.

Ferries are quite large.

Dover Calais Ferry Which is comforting given the weather conditions can be rather rough in the channel.

A little chilly on deck

Dover Calais Ferry Bill and I looking forward to leaving Dover.

Incoming Dover Calais Ferry

Dover Calais Ferry They seem to be rather frequent travelling both ways.

Farewell to the white cliffs.

Dover Calais Ferry I guess any time old guys like me talk about the white cliffs of Dover a particular song comes to mind.

Let’s hear it Vera.

The magnificent white cliffs

Dover Calais Ferry The cliffs look quite fantastic, only 22 miles to Calais.

 Bankok’s famous Long-tail boat

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry The long-tail boat, known as Ruea Hang Yao is a type of watercraft native to Southeast Asia, which uses a common automotive engine as a readily available and maintainable power-plant. A craft designed to carry passengers on a river may include a lightweight long canoe hull, up to 30 meters, and a canopy. There is much variation among these boats, some have evolved from traditional craft types, while others have a more improvised look. The sole defining characteristic is a second-hand car or truck engine.

Cold beer in Chinatown

Explore Bangkok Chao Phraya river ferry The Bangkok river ferry got me to Chinatown along the mighty Chao Phraya river which is known as the River of Kings. It is the life blood of Bangkok, around 50,000 people use its ferries each day. Slow barges bearing cargo coast upstream, kids still frolic in the brown water. Wooden shacks, mottled by the elements, still hang over the water. Check out my photo blog here.

Soaring hotels and condominiums hem in solemn temples, churches and civic buildings that look 19th century European, while close by the odd wooden sampan sells noodle soup or dried squid to hungry river workers. It is this juxtaposition of calm and chaotic, modern and traditional, religious and secular, ugly and sublime, foreign and indigenous that makes the Chao Phraya so evocative. My thanks to Bangkok.com for their wonderful description of the River of Kings.

Not everybody is happy on the river

A Vietnamese cargo ship ploughed into riverside houses along the Chao Phraya River in Phra Pradaeng district yesterday April 5t 2017, damaging three homes.

Residents fled to the streets in panic as the cargo ship loomed over them. Three houses were damaged, one badly, but nobody was injured.

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

Bill Austin & Joan Baptiste

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney, in 2010 the reason for my visit was to show Joan & Bill, my friends from Wiltshire in the UK, my wonderful home town with the best harbour in the world.

This is not a travel blog just a personal photo collection from 2010.

Overnight at Port Macquarie

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney We stay at Port Macquarie at my brother’s home on the way to Sydney, there was a vintage car rally with some terrific examples.

Warwick loves his food

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

However it caught up with him in 2013, he underwent a triple heart bypass, so much for over indulgence. 🙂 Now here is quite a coincidence, his heart surgeon was Dr Alan Farnsworth, he was captain of our rugby team at Homebush High school in Sydney & I was vice captain. From memory he was dux of the school & I struggled to pass my intermediate, however we were both pretty good footballers.

While I’m on the nostalgia kick I fondly remember our football coach Peter Philpott, an Australian leg spinner & a terrific guy.

I took a sentimental journey to Auburn, the Sydney suburb I grew up in. The main st had not changed much except for the Vietnamese & Muslim establishments. My real shock came when I drove past our family home at 58 Kihilla Rd, it was now totally run down, a very heartbreaking sight for me.

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy

August 17, 2015 by David Herd

Lake Como northern Italy

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times, it’s a very popular tourist attraction with many artistic and cultural gems. It has many villas and palaces such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni, and Villa Carlotta.

Fabulous Lake Como home

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy

Lake Como weather is generally mild. It is known for its Mediterranean-like climate where sub-tropical plants can grow year-round, Average daily temperatures range from about 2 °C (36 °F) in January to 30 °C (86 °F) in July.

Bellagio on Lake Como northern Italy

Bellagio Lake Como

Bellagio is a wonderful upmarket village on Lake Como, certainly a place that attracts the wealthy. Bellagio & Lake Como are both beautiful and famous, however I do prefer the larger Lake Garda which is a couple of hours east. I found it more “user friendly” in so much as there were many more places you could actually access the lake itself. The wealthy and the snobbish will always pick Como because that’s what they read about in the fashion magazines and gossip columns, but the experienced traveller I believe would choose Lake Garda as the more interesting location.

My little road rocket

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy This little car really covered a lot of miles in the coming weeks, all the way to Saint Tropez, Cinque Terre, Menton, Breil Sur Roya, Verona, Pejo, St Moritz and Salzburg.

For whom the bell tolls

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy Pardon me quoting the title of Ernest Hemingway’s 1940 novel, however I’m sure he would have sometime in his life sipped his double daiquiris on the shore of Lake Como. 🙂

Hemingway did enjoy a drink

What a fabulous old photo.

San Giacomo Church, Ossuccio

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy This Romanesque church is situated along the shore at Spurano, Ossuccio.  It was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. The sail bell tower on the outside wasn’t built until after the 14th century.  The double arched apse is typical of the local architecture and inside the church you can see visible traces of original frescoes.

Como

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern ItalyComo is a city and comune in Lombardy, Italy. It is the administrative capital of the Province of Como. Its proximity to Lake Como and to the Alps has made Como a popular tourist destination and the city contains numerous works of art, churches, gardens, museums, theatres, parks and palaces.
