Eastern European Odyssey

March 25, 2015 by David Herd

One of my greatest trips.

Eastern European Odyssey

Eastern European Odyssey

Eastern European Odyssey plus London was a hectic 4 week trip to a number of cities I had never visited before. First stop was Istanbul on February 25 2015 then on to London for a few days before flying to Zagreb in Croatia. A 3 hour bus trip took me to Split on the coast for a couple of days followed by 5 hours on the bus down the coast to Dubrovnik.

From Dubrovnik I traveled to Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina then onto Sarajevo. Finally back to Zagreb for one night before a horror train journey to Budapest due to construction work on the railroad.

A stand out feature of this trip was my selection of hotels and apartments, everyone of them was in a perfect location with a very reasonable price when booked through Agoda,

Istanbul The Blue Mosque

Eastern European Odyssey

It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I. Its Külliye contains a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is still popularly used as a mosque.

I stayed at the Hotel Spectra right next door to the Blue Mosque, it was in a great location and very good value if you book through Agoda.

Singing for the crowd

Eastern European Odyssey

There were quite a few buskers around the city.

Second stop London

Eastern European Odyssey

St Pauls Cathredal  The cathedral is one of the most famous and most recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren’s City churches, dominating the skyline for 300 years.

Enoteca da Luca

Eastern European Odyssey

Very close to St Pauls is this delightful Italian restaurant, put it on your list, it’s a breath of fresh air in a city not known for its fine food. 🙂

The Villa Kensington 10-11 Ashburn Gardens SW7  This excellent budget hotel is in a great location, only 2 blocks from Gloucester Road underground and surrounded by dozens of good restaurants. I booked through Agoda as usual and stayed in a newly renovated room for only 50 Quid or $98 usd including breakfast.

The Walkie Talkie and The Gherkin

London blue sky cold winter wind

Plus of course we have the Tower of London in the foreground.

Third stop Zagreb

Unforgettable Eastern European Odyssey

My hotel the Dubrovnik, looked over Zagreb’s Main Square, the perfect location for exploring this interesting city.

The Corner Bar

Eastern European Odyssey

This hidden away little bar was a gem, drinks, snacks of simply good coffee.

Zagreb Cathredal

Eastern European Odyssey

The cathedral towers over the city.

Next stop Split

Eastern European Odyssey

A three hour bus ride through the mountains to the coastal city of Split. My two bedroom apartment was terrific, only $60 per night in a perfect location. Book it through Agoda for this great rate.

Part of the old city

Eastern European Odyssey

There seemed to be a surprise around every corner wandering through the old part of the city.

The Prokurative

Unforgettable Eastern European Odyssey

The square has long been established as an excellent stage for cultural events, especially the pop music festival, and the local bars and restaurants made it a popular venue for the citizens of Split.

Beautiful Dubrovnik

Eastern European Odyssey

I was so pleased I was here in the “off season” as the crowds of tourists in the summer would be a real turn off.

Amazing city walls

Unforgettable Eastern European Odyssey

You can walk around the entire city on top of the ancient walls, it takes about 1.5 hours and is well worth the effort. If you visit Dubrovnik and want a fantastic apartment look no further than Karmen apartments.  The location is perfect and the price is very reasonable indeed. Marc the owner is very helpful and a hive of information. Staying here is like staying in your own home, the furniture, atmosphere and comfort is simply fantastic.

Outside the walls

Eastern European Odyssey

You can see why some scenes from Game of Thrones was filmed here.

Great Dubrovnik video clip

Mostar Bosnia-Herzegovina

Eastern European Odyssey

Bosnia was never part of my original plans until a couple of people suggested I should go as it was so close to where I was in Dubrovnik. I’m pleased I took their advice as Mostar turned out to be a real surprise packet. The Old Bridge was the jewel in the crown, it was destroyed in the war around 1993 and rebuilt.

Opposite the Bella Vista restaurant

Eastern European Odyssey

This reminded me of a mini version of Table mountain in Cape Town, in fact it was exactly one year ago when I was there.  My hotel by the river is in a terrific location and the nice couple Arnela & Adis running the hotel booked me a car to do a 3 hour tour of the area for $70 aud. The funny thing was they said “we are not busy today can we come with you?” So as it turned out I had 3 personal translators and tour guides including Admir the driver. The Vila park only costs about $35 per night if you book through Agoda.

Adis, Arnela & Admir

Eastern European Odyssey

Admir is a great taxi driver who will charge you the correct price, he speaks German & the local language but only a little English. You can phone him on +387 62 600 260, or if you are local 062 600 260.

Next stop Sarajevo

Another bus trip, unusual for me when travelling to take so many buses, however you certainly see a lot more of the country. These guys gather every day to play chess in the square, lots of shouting from the spectators as they give advice to the players.

Avaz Twist Tower

Eastern European Odyssey

The tallest building in Sarajevo, they have a lookout on the top floor which gives you a great view of the city.   My hotel in Sarajevo was in a perfect location with a good price, even though the rooms & breakfast were average I would stay at the Kovaci Hotel again.

Unforgettable Eastern European Odyssey

Eastern European Odyssey

I bought a nice leather bag for only $15.

The final stop Budapest

Eastern European Odyssey

What a fabulous city, so many photo opportunities particularly at night with all the lights. Buda Castle above is a beautiful example.

Hungarian Parliament

Eastern European Odyssey

For a reasonably priced hotel in the perfect location book the Promenade City hotel through this Agoda link.

Buda Castle

Eastern European Odyssey

What a super city Budapest was.

Budapest beautiful city

Budapest beautiful river Danube

Budapest beautiful river Danube

Budapest beautiful river Danube bridges on show in eastern Europe, in fact rarely has the first 24 hours in any city had such an impact on me. The lights, the beautiful buildings and bridges on the Danube are breathtaking. Buda Castle dominates the skyline near my hotel, certainly it’s more spectacular at night. The castle is the historical complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest, and was first completed in 1265.

Little Princess

Budapest was united from three cities in 1873 and seven years later the Diet resolved to establish a new, representative Parliament Building, expressing the sovereignty of the nation.

This 161-passenger vessel features a combination of amenities and design details never before seen on the great waterways of Europe. Featuring an impressive range of stateroom categories, dining options and public lounges, AmaBella will transport you on the river cruise of a lifetime.”

This should be called the rainbow boat

Cruising along the river was one of the highlights for me.

100 year old restaurant Budapest

Budapest beautiful river Danube

That is the actual name of the restaurant, I had dinner there on my first night in Budapest. It’s only 80 meters from my hotel, I was very tired after a long day travelling from Zagreb so perhaps I was not in the right mood.

I found the music was good but too loud and the Hungarian Goulash was ok, but I didn’t like the pasta that came with it.

Margaret Bridge

It is the second northernmost and second oldest public bridge in Budapest.

The Kiosk is my favourite bar

Budapest beautiful river Danube

Just around the corner from my hotel this terrific bar shows old movies on the wall.

Some like it hot

One of the best comedy movies ever made was playing the other night, I had forgotten just how good it was.

Bar staff at the kiosk

The guys behind the bar were very friendly.

That beautiful smile was certainly worth a photo.

The Buddha Bar

This is the Budapest Buddha bar, I was in the Paris Buddha bar exactly 10 years ago in February 2005, have a look at my Paris post.

Museum of Fine Arts

I took this photo from the “hop on hop off” bus. These tours are a great way to get a feel of the city.

Heroes’ Square

Heroes’ Square or Hősök tere is one of the major squares in Budapest, Hungary, noted for its iconic statue complex featuring the Seven Chieftains of the Magyars and other important national leaders, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

New York Cafe

Budapest beautiful river Danube

While riding on the “hop on hop off” bus I heard about the New York Cafe, I immediately got off and had lunch in this fabulous establishment.

New York Cafe lunch

Delicious food and not overly expensive give the venue.

Oinos Restaurant

Budapest beautiful river Danube

A terrific restaurant which was recommended by Attila from the KIOSK. TripAdvisor rate Oinos 15 out of 1942 restaurants in Budapest. Their sweet Pea soup was as good as I have ever tasted anywhere. I also enjoyed the Lasagna but I wish I had ordered the ribs instead. A nice touch was a champagne welcome drink plus a liquor to finish.

Buda Castle

Budapest beautiful river Danube

I really like this statue at the castle.

Buda Castle

Certainly one of the major attractions in Budapest.

This is to honor the Jews who were killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen in Budapest during World War II. They were ordered to take off their shoes, and were shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and were carried away. This memorial represents their shoes they left behind.

St. Stephen’s Basilica

It is named in honor of Stephen, the first King of Hungary (c 975–1038), whose right hand is housed in the reliquary. It was the sixth largest church building in Hungary before 1920. Today, it is the third largest church building in present-day Hungary.

Buda Castle

Budapest beautiful river Danube

The castle at night is one of the greatest sights I have seen anywhere in the world.

I hope you enjoyed my post on this wonderful city.

Budapest beautiful river Danube

Here are three bits of advice for you when Budapest, for a reasonably priced hotel in the very best location book the Promenade City hotel. Secondly, spend around $25 on the “hop on hop off” bus which will give you two days on the bus and also a very good river tour.

Live webcam here.

Finally stay away from this bar in Vaci St,  it is a shocking rip off joint, 2 girls struck up a conversation with me on the way in, we sat together and I had one beer, they were drinking like crazy. The bill came to 99,000 or $350 USD, I refused to pay it then they wanted 1/3. The waitress was in on the scam siding with the two blonds, she knew very well I only ordered and drank one beer. Just to get out of there I decided to pay 10,000, or $35 USD and left. Avoid this place at all costs. It’s such a shame they let this happen in this great city.

I hope this warning may save some people the cost and embarrassment.  Of course I should have realized as soon as these two young women started to chat me up there was  scam involved. Which only reminds me when travelling in strange cities you must always be on your guard. 🙂
