Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

March 18, 2015 by David Herd

A very interesting city

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina capital is the largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an estimated population of 369,534. The Sarajevo metropolitan area, including Sarajevo, East Sarajevo and surrounding municipalities, is home to 608,354 people.

The photo above is in the Baščaršija district of the Old Town and is only about 80 meters from my hotel.

Sebilj

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

The Sebilj is a pseudo-Ottoman-style wooden fountain (Sebil) in the centre of Baščaršija square in Sarajevo built by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica in 1753. It was relocated by Austrian architect Alexander Wittek in 1891. It is also frequently called “the pigeon square”.

Painting of The Sebilj

I saw this in a coffee shop just near the The Sebilj and thought it looked so good I would include it in this post.

Hotel Kovaci

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

The location is perfect, the rooms are average for the price of $70 aud per night. Breakfast is very average indeed but I would stay there again purely for the location. For a very good room rate just book through THIS LINK.

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital, close to Kavaci hotel

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

The tram is right at your doorstep of the Kovaci hotel. You can catch the number 1 tram straight to the Bus & railway station. A word of caution, make sure you validate your ticket inside the tram, I didn’t and had to pay a $20 aud fine to a couple of Bosnian thugs, c’est la vie. 🙂

Avaz Twist Tower

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

The Avaz Twist Tower is a 176 m tall skyscraper,  construction began in 2003 and was finished in 2008.

View from the tower

I imagine the snow on the mountains is normal for March.

The view from the tower really give you an appreciation of the layout of the city.

This huge interesting sculpture dominates the foyer of the Avaz Twist Tower.

 Cevapcici

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Ćevapi has its origins in the Balkans during the Ottoman period, and represents a regional specialty similar to the kofte kebab. I had one in Dudbovnik and was rather disappointed, however in Bosnia they were perfect, in fact I ate them three days in a row, twice for lunch and once for breakfast.

Donner Kebab

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Another specialty is the Donner Kebab originally from Turkey, delicious but for me the Cevapcici wins hands-down. 🙂

Every day they play

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

They also debate every move in loud voices while playing, the onlookers shout advice to the opponents.

I think I have got you now.

Orthodox Church

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

By now you can probably see there are many photo opportunities in Sarajevo.

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital, Taslihan

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Taslihan was built in 1543 as the Ghazi Husrev-Bey’s waqf. It had a fountain, mosque, yard, shops and storage rooms. It was severely damaged in several fires that struck Sarajevo.

Favorite pastime is drinking coffee

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

No different to most other European cities, drinking coffee on the side-walk while being bought up to date with the latest gossip.

Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

During the Siege of Sarajevo, Serbian forces purposely targeted many centers of the city’s culture, having suffered a significant amount of destruction, the reconstruction of the Mosque started with foreign help in 1996, right after the war.

Bascarsija Sarajevo

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

Baščaršija was built in 1462 when Isa-Beg Isaković built the Ishaković han, in addition to its many shops. At that time, most of the inhabitants of Sarajevo lived in the vicinity of the Emperor’s Mosque. Therefore, Isa-Beg Isaković built a bridge across the Miljacka to focus the main Sarajevo suburb and a new economic center of the city, Baščaršija.

Sarajevo tram

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

The trams are not too flash, they can also be expensive if you don’t validate your ticket on board. I was lazy and paid a $20 fine when two Bosnian thugs checked my 50 cent ticket and found I had not validated it, c’est la vie. 🙂

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital Dveri restaurant in

Sarajevo Bosnia Herzegovina Capital

I had dinner at this highly rated restaurant two nights in a row, it was very close to my hotel and quite unique. The veal soup was sensational, I returned the 2nd night just to have it again.

Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina

Mostar was a great surprise

 Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina

Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina

Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina turned out to be a real surprise package, my hotel by the river is only $35 and the nice couple Arnela & Adis running the place booked me a car to do a 3 hour tour of the area for $70 aud. The funny thing was they said “we are not busy today can we come with you?” So as it turned out I had 3 personal translators and tour guides including Admir the driver. Consequently I was able to see a lot of the surrounding country , we visited a town that has become famous because some children claim to have seen a vision in 1981, now thousands of believers (mainly Italian) flock here every year which has turned the village into a boom-town called Medjugorje.

Adis, Arnela & Admir

Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina

This is Adis, Arnela & Admir who were my translators and tour guides, we drove to Medjugorje, Kravice Waterfalls, Pocitelj and Blagaj. Anela & Adis work at the Vila park hotel which is a terrific place to stay, close to the Old Town and the bus station. Anelia helped me so much organizing taxis and even taking me to the phone shop to have a data package put on my phone. The Vila park only costs about $35 per night if you book through Agoda.

Admir is a great taxi driver who will charge you the correct price, he speaks German & the local language but only a little English. You can phone him on +387 62 600 260, or if you are local 062 600 260.

Pocitelj Castle

Mostar Bosnia Herzegovina

Počitelj is a town in the Čapljina municipality, Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The historic site of Počitelj is located on the left bank of the river Neretva, on the main Mostar to Metković road, and it is to the south of Mostar. During the Middle Ages, Počitelj was considered the administrative centre and centre of governance of Dubrava župa (county), while its westernmost point gave it major strategic importance. It is believed that the fortified town along with its attendant settlements were built by Bosnia’s King Stjepan Tvrtko I in 1383. The walled town of Počitelj evolved in the period from the 16th to the 18th centuries.

The Pile gate to Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city, first impression certainly lived up to it’s reputation. It’s no wonder it is one of the most popular European destinations. This is the 3rd Croatian city I have visited starting with Zagreb then onto Split before taking a 5 hour bus trip down the coast to Dubrovnik.

Neum in Bosnia

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

Just north of Dubrovnik you have to cross the Bosnian border at Neum. They check your passport going in and going out.

Just inside the Pile Gate

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

Here is the first thing you see when you enter the city through the Pile Gate.

Lots of bars and restaurants

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

There is a big choice of places to eat and drink in Dubrovnik, being the low season they are all screaming for customers.

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city has amazing stone walls.

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian city

I walked right around the entire city on top of the walls which costs about $20 and is well worth it. It really gives you a sense of this majestic city.  Dubrovnik’s Old Town is completely surrounded by enormous stone walls that date back to the 10th century. Up to 6m (19ft) thick and 2.5m (8ft) high in places, Dubrovnik’s Ancient City Walls were built to protect the city and deter would-be invaders. You can walk along the entire (2km/1.2mi) length of the ancient walls today and it is one of the best ways to appreciate the majesty of the Old Town plus get some great views over the Adriatic sea.

There are 2 towers and 2 forts incorporated into the walls that were built and strengthened in the 15th century to bolster the city’s defenses. The Minceta Tower protects the city’s northern edge; the Bokar Tower protects Pile Gate (the city’s main entrance); Lovrjenac Fort protects the west, and the Revelin Fort protects the eastern entrance.

The harbour

Dubrovnik medieval Croatian cityMarc is a friendly Englishman who will point you in the right direction for restaurants and has a great knowledge of Dubrovniks history. Dubrovnik was significantly affected by the break-up of Yugoslavia. In the early 90s, Greater Serb aggression resulted in Dubrovnik suffering its most serious existential threat. Over two thirds of the historic town’s buildings were hit by artillery. The town’s cobbled streets were struck by hundreds of direct hits. For the first time in history, the medieval city walls themselves received over a hundred direct hits. Many historic palaces were badly damaged by the resulting fires. The renowned Sponza and Rector’s palace, St Blaise’s church, the Franciscan monastery and the Amerling and Onofrio fountain all suffered severely. The total reconstruction cost was said to be some $ 10 million.

Crisis in Dubrovnik
Marc van Bloemen has lived in the old town of Dubrovnik, a Croatian citadel widely praised as the jewel of the Adriatic, for decades, since he was a child. He says it used to be a privilege. Now it’s a nightmare.

Crowds of tourists clog the entrances to the ancient walled city, a Unesco World Heritage Site, as huge cruise ships unload thousands more daily. People bump into each other on the famous limestone-paved Stradun, the pedestrian street lined with medieval churches and palaces, as fans of the popular TV series Game of Thrones search for the locations where it was filmed.

Dubrovnik is a prime example of the effects of mass tourism, a global phenomenon in which the increase in people travelling means standout sites — particularly small ones — get overwhelmed by crowds. As the numbers of visitors keeps rising, local authorities are looking for ways to keep the throngs from killing off the town’s charm.

“It’s beyond belief, it’s like living in the middle of Disneyland,’’ said van Bloemen from his house overlooking the bustling Old Harbor in the shadows of the stone city walls.

So many cruise ships.

On a typical day there are about eight cruise ships visiting this town of 2,500 people, each dumping some 2,000 tourists into the streets. He recalls one day when 13 ships anchored here.

“We feel sorry for ourselves, but also for them (the tourists) because they can’t feel the town anymore because they are knocking into other tourists,’’ van Bloemen said. “It’s chaos, the whole thing is chaos.’’

The problem is hurting Dubrovnik’s reputation. Unesco warned last year that the city’s world heritage title was at risk because of the surge in tourist numbers.

The popular Discoverer travel blog recently wrote that a visit to the historic town “is a highlight of any Croatian vacation, but the crowds that pack its narrow streets and passageways don’t make for a quality visitor experience.’’

It said that the extra attention the city gets from being a filming location for Game of Thrones combines with the cruise ship arrivals to create “a problem of epic proportions.’’

It advises travellers to visit other quaint old towns nearby: “Instead of trying to be one of the lucky ones who gets a ticket to Dubrovnik’s sites, try the delightful town of Ohrid in nearby Macedonia.’’

In 2017, local authorities announced a “Respect the City’’ plan that limits the number of tourists from cruise ships to a maximum of 4,000 at any one time during the day. The plan still has to be implemented, however.

“We are aware of the crowds,’’ said Romana Vlasic, the head of the town’s tourist board.

But while on the one hand she pledged to curb the number of visitors, Vlasic noted with some satisfaction that this season in Dubrovnik “is really good with a slight increase in numbers.’’

The success of the Croatian national soccer team at this summer’s World Cup, where it reached the final, helped bring new tourists.

It’s a nightmare

Vlasic said that over 800,000 tourists visited Dubrovnik since the start of the year, a 6% increase from the same period last year. Overnight stays were up 4% to three million.

The cruise ships pay the city harbor docking fees, but the local businesses get very little money from the visitors, who have all-inclusive packages on board the ship and spend very little on local restaurants or shops.

Krunoslav Djuricic, who plays his electric guitar at Pile, one of the two main entrances of Dubrovnik’s walled city, sees the crowds pass by him all day and believes that “mass tourism might not be what we really need.’’

The tourists disembarking from the cruise ships have only a few hours to visit the city, meaning they often rush around to see the sites and take selfies to post to social media.

Inside the Golden Gate

Split Ancient Croatian Coastal city

The northern gate of the Palace (called the Golden Gate) had been conceived as the main entrance to the Palace and so it had been elaborately decorated with statues of the Emperor Diocletian and his co-regent Maximilian.

The Golden Gate

Emperor Diocletian walked through them as he entered the Palace on the 1st of June 305. They were built in the shape of a rectangle, with double doors, as part of the defensive military tactics (propugnaculum).

The facade was decorated with niches containing figure sculptures of the four tetrarchs (Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius and Constantius Chlorus). Wikipedia.

Lots to do in Zagreb

Zagreb Croatia bars restaurants

Zagreb Croatia bars restaurants

Zagreb Croatia bars restaurants are everywhere, what really surprised me however is the amount of outdoor seating with large heaters to keep you warm. I arrived March 6th and it was freezing.

The cold days don’t seem to bother the locals in the outdoor bars.

Rugged up for evening drinks

The overhead heaters are very warm indeed, the problem is my back was freezing. Another problem for me is they smoke inside the restaurants as well.

Josip Jelačić

Josip Jelačić was the Ban of Croatia between 23 March 1848 and 19 May 1859. He was a member of the House of Jelačić and a noted army general, remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and for his abolition of serfdom in Croatia.

Statue of Petrica Kerempuh

Standing in a small square filled with flower stalls is a mischievous looking statue of Petrica Kerempuh, the work of sculptor Vanja Radauš. A much-loved character from Croatian literature, Petrica Kerempuh is a plebeian prophet, rascal and cynical commentator on contemporary events, a sort of predecessor of modern standup comedians. His most notable incarnation can be found in “The Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh” (1936), written by Croatia’s leading 20th-century writer Miroslav Krleža.

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Istanbul is a super city

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul is a must for your bucket list, I took the long cruise to Anadolu Kavağı, departing 10.30 from Galata Bridge with a 3 hour break for lunch and returning at 4.30.

Bosphorus bridge connecting Europe and Asia was completed in 1973,  it is the 22nd longest suspension bridge span in the world.

The trip starts here

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

The ferry leaves from the Galata bridge for the 1.5 hour cruise to Anadolu Kavağı.

Rumeli Hisarı Fortress

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

At the narrowest part of the Bosphorus, Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror ordered the great fortress of Rumeli Hisarı to be built on the European shore in order to control commercial and military traffic in preparation for the siege of Constantinople.

Homes on the Bosphorus

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

You really get an appreciation of the sheer size of the city when you take the Bosphorus Cruise Istanbul. Anadolu Kavağı is about 25 kms towards the Black sea and on both sides of the river there are thousands and thousands of homes.

Luxury home on the Bosphorus

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Looking back I realise I should have allocated at least a few more days to explore this interesting part of the world.

Up market Istanbul

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

There are many upmarket areas in Istanbul.

We have arrived at Anadolu Kavağı.

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Time to leave the Bosphorus river Cruise and have some lunch.

 The restaurants wait for customers

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

It must be the off season as there are not many people in the restaurants.

Many restaurants to choose from

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

They all compete aggressively for customers, each guy seems to use the same spiel, they say the price of this fish is 20, but for you 16, and so on.

Street cooking

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

This is a good way to sample the food which is very reasonably priced.

Two very friendly guys

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

These happy fellows really made you welcome.

The seafood here was reasonably priced

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

Except the large king prawns were very expensive.

Decision has been made

Bosphorus river Cruise Istanbul

The fish was quite good, the salad average, with a small bottle of sparkling water & a basket of nice fresh bread the cost was only $12 AUD.

Waterfront homes

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

Bosphorus Bridge

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe, experience the incredible diverse population that coexists in this huge metropolis. Minarets dot the skyline and there seems to be a noisy bazaar around every corner.

Istanbul, Constantinople & Byzantium are three of the names this ancient city has been called since it was founded in 660 BC.  However Istanbul may have been inhabited as early as 3000 BC, but it was not a city until Greek colonists arrived in the area in the 7th Century BC. The city has been conquered, fought over and rebuilt many times over the centuries.

Bosphorus bridge connecting Europe and Asia was completed in 1973,  it is the 22nd longest suspension bridge span in the world.

If the world were a single state, Istanbul would have been its capital” …said Napleaon Bonaparte.

Hop on, hop off

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

As in many other cities around the world the best way to quickly become acquainted is to ride the ‘hop on, hop off” bus. You can buy a two day pass for about $33, great value.

Istanbul cultures nations religions

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

I don’t think I have ever seen a city with so many markets and bazaars, I certainly have not seen one with so many mosques, there are over 3000 here and 83,000 in the whole country.

As you would expect the Istanbul markets are chaotic and fascinating.

Fish roll

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

Fish sandwiches come as half loaves of bread, sliced in two and stuffed with a freshly grilled mackerel, the problem for was the little bones were still in the fish. After eating half I got tired of nearly swallowing bones so I left the rest.

The Turkish name is balık-ekmek, it’s a grilled fish fillet in a half-loaf of bread along with a scoop of alata, lettuce, tomatoes and onions.

We are the Sultans

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe      Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

Throughout the centuries some of Turkey’s rulers gave themselves some very good names, from 1494 to 1566 we had Suleiman the Magnificent. In 1453 we had  Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror”  who captured Constantinople and declared it the new capital of the Ottoman Empire.

The Grand Bazaar

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with 61 covered streets and over 3,000 shops which attract between 250,000 and 400,000 visitors daily.

I’m quite sure the bazaar has not changed in centuries.

Hippodrome German Fountain

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

This octagonal building with water taps around was constructed in 1898. Inside the fountain, there are lovely mosaics which depicts the signatures of Wilhelm II and Sultan Abdulhamit II, the sultan of that time. This fountain was to commemorate the alliance of German Empire and Ottoman Empire against the allied powers of Russia, Great Britain,France and Japan before the World War I.

The Blue Mosque

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque is a historic mosque in Istanbul. The mosque is popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior. It was built from 1609 to 1616, during the rule of Ahmed I.

 Hotel Spectra

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

A great location 80 meters from the Blue Mosque, in fact the first photo above was taken from the hotel restaurant. The food is reasonable, the rooms are nice & the staff are very helpful. As usual I booked through Agoda and got a great deal.   To clarify my take on food and wine in Istanbul,  Wine is very drinkable , but the food was not to my taste, in my top 5 cities for food you have Tokyo, New York, Bangkok, Cape Town and Sydney, Istanbul would struggle to make the top 50. Here is an example to back up my comment, while paying my bill at the hotel restaurant I noticed the waiter and the barman were eating some nice looking food. I asked what is was because it did not seem to be anything on the menu. They said it is not from the kitchen here, we order from outside and they deliver, I rest my case.

Wine with dinner at the Spectra Hotel

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

The Turkish wine was very good indeed.

Galata Tower

Istanbul Asia Meets Europe

On the hill in the distance is the Galata Tower, called Christea Turris by the Genoese, it’s a medieval stone tower in the Galata/Karaköy quarter of Istanbul. The boat above is a much nicer sister ship of the rust bucket that I spent 4 hours cruising on along the Bosphorus.

A couple of blocks from the Hotel Spectra

There are many interesting streets to wander near the Hotel Spectra.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy is the 5th and final village that are called in English “the five lands.” Then we have Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town’s vineyards.

Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses. Riomaggiore’s main street is Via Colombo, where numerous restaurants, bars and shops can be found.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre, all connected by trail. The water and mountainside have been declared national parks.

Also quite well known for the wine they produce in their own vineyards.

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.

Boats are everywhere

The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive.

Lots of little restaurants tucked away.

Manarola seaside village Italy

Magnificent Cinque Terre

Manarola seaside village Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy seems to cling to the side of the cliff, it is the fourth village in the Cinque Terre and quite spectacular. I couldn’t believe how the people would sunbathe on the jagged rocks. 🙂

Manarola on the rocks

Manarola Cinque Terre may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo, dating from 1338. The local dialect is Manarolese, which is marginally different from the dialects in the nearby area. The name “Manarola” is probably dialectical evolution of the Latin, “magna rota”. In the Manarolese dialect this was changed to “magna roea” which means “large wheel”, in reference to the mill wheel in the town.

That concrete looks soooo comfortable. 🙂

Manarola’s primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned; references from Roman writings mention the high quality of the wine produced in the region. In recent years, Manarola and its neighbouring towns have become popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell’Amore, “Love’s Trail”) and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town. Manarola is one of the five villages. Mostly all of the houses are bright and colourful. Manarola was celebrated in paintings by Antonio Discovolo (1874-1956)

Corniglia seaside village Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

The fabulous Italian coast

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy is the third village between Vernazza and Manarola. Many people walk between the villages, lazy people like me catch the train. 🙂

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre’s villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Documents dating from 1276-77 mention the existence of a castle. However, remains of the castle have yet to be discovered and the location of the castle grounds is unknown.

Wonderful old buildings in Corniglia.

The only ruins in Corniglia belong to Genoese fortifications, a stronghold on a cliff plunging into the sea, which dates back to approximately 1556.
