Two weeks Gold Coast 2019

July 15, 2019 by David Herd

Two weeks Gold Coast

Two weeks Gold Coast

Two weeks Gold Coast 2019 provided a welcome relief from months of hot weather in Thailand. Caught up with some old friends & celebrated another birthday at Melbas on the park. Most days were overcast with scattered showers which suited me just fine. Above is Marine Parade Labrador.

 [aws_search_form]

Talking about Labrador…

Two weeks Gold CoastThere is a nice restaurant next door to the Aqua building called The Lazy Lobster.

Lunch with an old friend.

Two weeks Gold CoastI have known Shane for around 30 years, he took me to lunch for my birthday.

I chose the baby Barramundi

Two weeks Gold CoastThe dish was very nice however I must admit my favourite place for seafood is on Chevron Island.

Chevron Island Seafood

Two weeks Gold CoastAlways fresh & the price is right. If you go make sure you say hi to Frank & Wozza.

Malcolm Kennedy

Two weeks Gold CoastCoffee on Chevron Island with Mal, another guy I have known for 30 years. Mal originally owned the Typsy Prawn restaurant on the corner of Upton St & Ashmore Road. He moved to Phuket around 2001 & opened a restaurant on the beach with the same name. Then after a few years he moved to Jomtiem & bought a venue called Simon’s Fish & Chips, he now resides on Chevron.

Melbas 38th birthday

Two weeks Gold Coast Beside me is Dave Allen, Adrian, Greg Craig & Graham La Roche. More birthday photos on  THIS LINK.

Check out this new illuminated LED menu idea.

Now you can throw away your glasses. 🙂

Breakfast at the Island Cafe.

Two weeks Gold CoastExcellent food & coffee here.

Australian lamb price is at all time record levels.

Two weeks Gold CoastTo be fair this is at the Brickworks in Ferry Rd Southport, both the seafood & butcher shop are known for their over the top prices.

Meet Sam Murphy

Two weeks Gold CoastI stayed with Tony & Nikki Murphy at their lovely home in Sorrento, Sam however is totally in charge of the house. 🙂

Burleigh Heads Surf Club

Burleigh Heads breakfast A very good breakfast here, more photos of Burleigh on THIS LINK.

Avanti St Mermaid Waters

Two weeks Gold CoastMy brother Ian & his wife Sandra just demolished their home & built duplexes. They sold one & live in the other. 50% of the homes in this street are now duplexes. Incredibly there is one a few doors down from Ian that just sold for $1.8 million.

Drinks at Melbas

Two weeks Gold Coast Caught up with the usual suspects.

Gold Coast birthday celebrations

Gold Coast birthday celebrations

Gold Coast birthday celebrations in July 2019 bought back many wonderful memories for me. Thursday 4th was the 38th birthday for Melbas on the park, & Sunday 7th was mine.

On the left above is old friend Lloyd Ross who without a doubt has spent more money in Melbas than anyone else by a country mile. In the middle is the general manager Dave Allen the son of the legendary Melbas founder Paul Allen.

For a look at some of the great Melbas memories just follow THIS LINK.

I recall my first visit to this iconic restaurant/nightclub was January 1st 1982. This was the start of an amazing year, just check out THIS LINK.

Omeros Gold Coast

Omeros Gold Coast Restaurant has been a favourite of mine for around 30 years from back when it was known as the Paragon. A fabulous on the Broadwater looking towards Southport.

I usually sit inside with the air conditioning. 🙂

Omeros Bros Gold Coast Seafood RestaurantHowever if I’m dining with a noisy mob outside is better. 🙂

Lunch with friends

Omeros Bros Gold Coast Seafood RestaurantRoss & Mariana Kennedy are legends in their own lunchtime. They now live 5 minutes away at Paradise Waters.

A couple of drinks at the bar first is a good idea.

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

September 6, 2018 by David Herd

Who said nostalgia is a thing of the past?

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland Coast

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland, it’s been many years since I visited this Australian resort town on Queensland’s Whitsunday Coast, known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef.

I have only been to Airlie 3 times, 1979, 1992 & 2003, each time I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

A great place for a holiday

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland Coast

Bright blue water & a bright blue sky, what more could you want?

Beach, what beach?

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

There really isn’t much of a beach at Airlie, just a few small strips of sand, you need to head to the island for the really good beaches.

Swim in the lagoon.

Located between the main street & the ocean.

The Hog’s breath Cafe

Overlooking the lagoon & the bay.

Greg Clee was the owner of the Hog’s Breath.

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

A man of many names, aka Storming Jack Dawson. 🙂 Remember this was 2003, now in 2018 Greg & I both live in the same building in Pattaya Thailand.

Greg in his classic Mercedes coupe

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

My visit was part of a 7,000 kilometre road trip with 3 Japanese students which included Coober Pedy & Ayres Rock.

And here they are.

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

It was a huge buzz showing these lovely girls outback Australia.

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland

The girls went crazy every time we saw Kangaroos, emus or camels. 🙂

Talking about wildlife, these guys are as wild & dangerous as anything on the planet.

This was at a local wild life park when I visited in 1992.

My gorgeous kiwi girlfriend

Karen & I went out for a year or so, until a week after we returned to the Gold Coast from Airlie Beach.

Remembering Airlie Beach Queensland Certainly one of the best beaches in Australia.

Alan Pearson & I both lived in Adelaide in the mid 70s.

Alan moved to Airlie Beach & made a living playing guitar & singing in pubs & restaurants.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

July 12, 2018 by David Herd

Too much seafood is never enough.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

Sensational Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont Bridge Road is always a hive of activity. We were there on a Monday in July 2018 and it was as crowded as a Sunday.

A very famous name….

Sensational Sydney Fish Market The Doyles family first opened their doors in Watsons Bay in 1885. Since then and for over 5 generations, the Doyle family have been serving Australian Seafood in a number of outlets around Sydney.

Doyles at Watsons Bay in 1982

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Australian seafood is as good as you will find anywhere in the world.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

Sensational Sydney Fish Market As they say in the classics, “shop till you drop” at the Sensational Sydney Fish Market. 🙂

A perfect lunch

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Sydney rock oysters & fresh prawns.

Did I mention oysters?

Sensational Sydney Fish Market I just spent 4 days on the Gold Coast & 3 times I visited Chevron Island seafood to swallow a dozen Coffin Bay oysters from South Australia. My good friend Frank is the owner & discounted them to $20 a dozen.

Famous Murray Cod.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market For some strange reason I don’t think I have ever eaten this iconic Australian fish.

Anyone for a swordfish steak?

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Looks very interesting indeed at the Sydney Fish Market.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market still busy after 2 pm.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Half the lunch crowd had left but there were still lots of people eating.

Giant crabs

Sensational Sydney Fish Market These monsters would be perfect for a long lunch.

Gold Coast Broadwater

August 22, 2017 by David Herd

Spectacular Gold Coast View

 Gold Coast Broadwater

Gold Coast Broadwater Gold Coast Broadwater all add up to a breathtaking view of Surfers Paradise which is located 800 kilometers north of Sydney & 80 kilometers south of Brisbane.

We are looking east to Marina Mirage on the right & the Vercace Hotel o the left.

Broadwater entrance

Gold Coast Broadwater Beside those rocks is the entrance channel to the Broadwater, or the exit depending on which way you are going. 🙂

Blue Sky Boats Gold Coast Broadwater

Gold Coast Broadwater Here is a closer look at the rock wall on the southern side of the seaway entrance.

Hundreds of boats use the seaway every day.

Gold Coast Broadwater Everything from jet skis to huge luxury cruisers, all hoping to enjoy Blue Sky Boats Gold Coast Broadwater & maybe a bag full of fish.

For a great hotel room rate (with free cancellation) just book through THIS LINK.

Some get into trouble when the sea is rough.

Blue Sky Boats Gold Coast Broadwater The rescue boat is always there to lend a hand.

My friend’s catamaran.

Gold Coast Broadwater

A nice way to escape the rat race of Surfers Paradise. 🙂

Gold Coast Broadwater

Gold Coast Broadwater

A great day out on the Broadwater.

Some guys prefer to fish.

Gold Coast Broadwater Boats, who needs boats? We are here to catch a big one.

And I’m here for a sun tan.

Gold Coast Broadwater

So no matter what you are interested in you will find it n the Broadwater.

Did I mention the seafood?

Gold Coast Broadwater You have two great choices, pull into Charis seafood at Labrador & pick up your lunch. Those of you with a sharp eye will notice the mud crabs are $36.90 a kilo, well tat was 2010, sadly in 2017 they have doubled in price.

Direct from the trawler.

Gold Coast Broadwater This is my preference, they are located just north of Marina Mirage, just call Curly on 0417 668 591, he’s one of the boat owners, he will let you know what they have in stock.

Best prawns in the world.

Gold Coast Broadwater These medium size king prawns are around $25 aud a kilo. Check out more seafood on THIS LINK.

Decisions, decisions.

Gold Coast Broadwater Take the at out or……..

Order lunch at one of the many restaurants?

Gold Coast Broadwater

So many decisions & such little time. 🙂

Gold Coast Broadwater

Gold Coast Broadwater What a fabulous part of the world.

Houston, we have lift off.

The kite surfer is having a ball.

An amazing view.

Gold Coast Broadwater From my friends apartment, it does not get better than this. By the way it’s for sale3 for a lazy $1.5 million AUD.

I’m guessing now in 2021 it will be closer to $2.5 million.

Here is the view from the opposite side of the Broadwater towards Southport.

Gold Coast Broadwater

Over the years I spent countless hours on my boat in this very area.

Finally a birds eye view of Surfers Paradise

Gold Coast Broadwater

Absolutely spectacular, featuring the Southport yacht in the foreground.

Sydney Boats Beaches Harbour

Sydney Boats Beaches Harbour were all waiting for me after my leisurely drive down the east coast from Surfers Paradise in QLD.

It was a great drive down from from Surfers Paradise  to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.

The historic Roseville Cinema

On the road between Hornsby & Sydney is The historic Roseville Cinema on the Pacific Highway, noted for its art deco facade. It became Traynor’s Picture Palace in 1919, but did not become a full-scale cinema until 1936. Roseville Cinema was renovated & updated to two screens in 1995.

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

April 14, 2017 by David Herd

Incredible landscape

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Coober Pedy Opal Mine Coober Pedy Opal Mine, nowhere else in the world have I seen colours similar to outback Australia. Red earth, blackened trees and a beautiful blue sky.

I took three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Cooper Pedy on the first leg of our journey on the way to Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Excitement

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

The girls started clapping wildly when they saw the kangaroo sign so you can imagine how excited they were when they saw a live one.

Here we are in Coober Pedy

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

You know when you are near the town when you see all the mounds of dirt & gravel.

OK, what are we waiting for?

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Let’s go & check out this underground village.

My trusty Holden Commodore was our transport on our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

Mini mountains everywhere

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 km north of Adelaide. The 2011 census showed its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians). The town is sometimes referred to as the “opal capital of the world” due to the quantity of precious opals that are mined there.

This was our first indication of work happening around the mines.

As you can clearly see not all the people live underground.

There are quite a few opal shops, restaurants and a variety of accommodation ranging from four star to backpackers and caravan/camping areas.

Is this Coober Pedy art?

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

To be honest with you I have no idea what it is. 🙂

On the other hand….

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

This may well be the brother of “Tin Man” from The Wizard of Oz. 🙂

 On the subject of movies

Coober Pedy Opal Mine

This monster was apparently part of a movie set that has been abandoned and left here as a talking point.

We have finished the first stage of our Journey.

Next stop is Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Road Trip South Australia

April 13, 2017 by David Herd

Road trip with Japanese students.

Road Trip South Australia

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

Road Trip South Australia reminds me of the last frontier and the road trip I took in 2003. Three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & I travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Coober Pedy in South Australia, a fascinating opal mining town where most of the population live in underground houses, then on to Ayers Rock and back home to the Gold Coast via Hervey Bay where we went whale watching. On our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

The above photo is at Tenterfield on the New England Highway.

Typical outback building

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

In the 19th and early 20th century Broken Hill was home to a community of Afghans. Afghans worked as camel drivers in parts of outback Australia, and they made a significant contribution to economic growth when transport options were limited. The camel drivers formed the first sizeable Muslim communities in Australia, and in Broken Hill they left their mark in the form of the first mosque in NSW (1891).
