Sensational Sydney Fish Market

July 12, 2018 by David Herd

Too much seafood is never enough.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

Sensational Sydney Fish Market in Pyrmont Bridge Road is always a hive of activity. We were there on a Monday in July 2018 and it was as crowded as a Sunday.

A very famous name….

Sensational Sydney Fish Market The Doyles family first opened their doors in Watsons Bay in 1885. Since then and for over 5 generations, the Doyle family have been serving Australian Seafood in a number of outlets around Sydney.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Australian seafood is as good as you will find anywhere in the world.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market

Sensational Sydney Fish Market As they say in the classics, “shop till you drop” at the Sensational Sydney Fish Market. 🙂

A perfect lunch

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Sydney rock oysters & fresh prawns.

Did I mention oysters?

Sensational Sydney Fish Market I just spent 4 days on the Gold Coast & 3 times I visited Chevron Island seafood to swallow a dozen Coffin Bay oysters from South Australia. My good friend Frank is the owner & discounted them to $20 a dozen.

Famous Murray Cod.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market For some strange reason I don’t think I have ever eaten this iconic Australian fish.

Anyone for a swordfish steak?

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Looks very interesting indeed at the Sydney Fish Market.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market still busy after 2 pm.

Sensational Sydney Fish Market Half the lunch crowd had left but there were still lots of people eating.

Giant crabs

Sensational Sydney Fish Market These monsters would be perfect for a long lunch.

Farewell Japan after my 5th visit since 2007.

Overnight Narita Station APA Hotel

Overnight Narita Station

Overnight Narita Station APA Hotel before flying home to Thailand after another wonderful Japanese holiday. My six hour flight was scheduled to leave at 10.00 am so staying in Tokyo would have meant getting up very early.

There is a free shuttle bus from the APA hotel to the airport which takes about 30 minutes.

All you can eat restaurant.

Overnight Narita Station The Spiral Staircase is a small “hole in the wall” restaurant that offers unlimited food for a set price of around 2,200 Yen. They also included the largest glass of red wine that I have ever been served.

Desert included

Overnight Narita StationA pancake with ice cream, delicious.

Reminds me of an old song

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure

June 20, 2018 by David Herd

Eat to live, or live to eat?

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure

 Gastronomical Japanese Adventure

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure in May 2018, started with the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sendai, then I flew to Sapporo before another flight south to Nagoya. After a couple of overcast days I had a short trip on the Shinkansen to Kyoto. Four days later I rested in Hikone for 2 days before spending my final night in Narita.

The Yakitori chicken above was in Tokyo & absolutely mouth watering. 🙂

Sushizanmai is my favourite sushi chain of restaurants.

Gastronomical Japanese AdventureAlways fresh & delicious.

Grilled Avocado at the Cellar Grill Omotosando

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure Quite an amazing taste.

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure continues in Sendai

Gastronomical Japanese Adventure Sendai is famous for oysters, “a cold current that contains nutrient-rich water travels down the coast from north to south. The two currents collide at around the Sanriku area, which includes the coast of Miyagi Prefecture.” The mixing of these currents leads to plankton blooms, which attract migrating fish. “This same nutrient- and plankton-rich water makes Matsushima Bay oysters delicious,” these wild oysters were first discovered as a culinary delight and harvested from Matsushima Bay back in the 17th century.

Salmon & almonds was delicious.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

June 19, 2018 by David Herd

A city between Tokyo & Kyoto

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan sits by the shore of Lake Biwa the largest lake in Japan. In previous blogs I have been a little harsh when writing about Hikone, however the Castle was interesting & I dined at two very good restaurants. Above is Castle Road which as you can guess leads to the famous Castle.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto JapanApparently the buildings along Castle road have been designed like town houses from the Edo Period with white walls.

It was a long walk to Starbucks

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Always worth the effort though. 🙂

My hotel to Starbucks

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I’m sure it took me longer than 31 minutes. 🙂 Hotel Sunroute Hikone is also only 4 minutes walk from the station, you can get a room for around $30 AUD if you book through THIS LINK.

I stopped for an ice cream on the way back to my hotel.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I tend to walk as much as possible to help my fitness, plus you see more of the local environment. Most days I was walking more than 10,000 steps.

Cute coffee shop

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Also there are lots more photo opportunities when you walk.

A monster supermarket

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan By far the biggest I have ever seen anywhere in the world.

The famous Castle

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto JapanFive castles in Japan are national treasures, this is one of them. Hikone Castle’s three storied castle keep is relatively small but displays a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles. This is one reason why the castle keep has been designated a national treasure, the highest designation for cultural properties in Japan, held by only four other castle keeps, namely HimejijoMatsumotojoInuyamajo and Matsuejo.

The other four.

Hikone Castle Japanese National Treasure Hikone Castle is a 15 minute walk along the straight main road from Hikone Station.

Entry to the castle

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto JapanAfter climbing about 800 steps the end is near. 🙂

The climb is worth it.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I have seen so many castles in Japan yet the attraction is still there for me.

The city from the castle.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan As you can see it’s a very small city.

Spare a thought for this guy

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Everywhere you go in Japan there is a photo opportunity.

Apprenti restaurant

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Very good food & delightful owners.

Duck Confit for dinner

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Very French, here is the recipe. Pour the melted fat over the duck (the duck pieces should be covered by fat) and place the confit in the oven. Cook the confit slowly at a very slow simmer — just an occasional bubble — until the duck is tender and can be easily pulled from the bone, 2-3 hours. Remove the confit from the oven.

Followed by desert of course.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I ate here two nights in a row. 🙂

Here I am with the owners of Apprenti restaurant.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Masanori & his wife Hiromi are 2 delightful people who provide excellent French food & wine in their small French restaurant.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

June 16, 2018 by David Herd

You gotta love Yakitori & Sake

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo was an excellent typical, busy, noisy Japanese restaurant serving good food at a very reasonable price.

Small,busy & noisy.

Kushi Dori Yakitori SapporoThe only downside is customers are allowed to smoke in 90% of restaurants.

I went there two of the 4 nights I was in Sapporo.

Kushi Dori Yakitori SapporoEach time I had 5 or 6 skewers & 2 or 3 glasses of sake + an ice cold Asashi for only 1700 yen, or $20 AUD.

Beef tongue & asparagus wrapped in pork.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo Both were delicious as you can imagine. The sake was pretty good also.

The chicken is always hard to beat.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo In some ways it reminds me of eating Dim Sum, lots of different tasty small portions.

Is that “Daddy Cool” waiting for a seat?

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo is always busy & popular.

Very close to my hotel.

Talking about happy chefs.

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

June 14, 2018 by David Herd

 Wide moats and sloping walls

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

Nagoya Castle completed 1612 but most of the buildings in the complex were burned down during the World War II air raids in 1945. Fortunately, however, three corner towers, three gates, and most of the paintings on the sliding doors and walls in the Hommaru Palace survived the fire.

Always lots of students visiting the castles.

Nagoya Castle completed 1612I’m guessing this may be the 12th castle I have visited in Japan. It puts into perspective life many hundreds of years ago.

Modern Skyscrapers Nagoya Japan

June 14, 2018 by David Herd

Some spectacular buildings in Nagoya

Modern Skyscrapers Nagoya Japan

Modern Skyscrapers Nagoya Japan

Modern Skyscrapers Nagoya Japan are scattered all around the main railway station. Located between Tokyo & Kyoto Nagoya is worth spending a couple of days sightseeing, It rained the 2 days I was there in June 2018, however the sun finally came out the day I was leaving for Kyoto on the Shinkansen.

The circular buildings were completed in 1999, the JR Central Towers rise elegantly above Nagoya Station. The building consists of the 245 meter tall Office Tower and the slightly shorter and slimmer Hotel Tower.

Mode Gakuen Spiral Towers

Modern Skyscrapers Nagoya JapanThe building is home to three vocational schools: Nagoya Mode Gakuen, HAL Nagoya and Nagoya Isen.
