Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

April 13, 2017 by David Herd

Road trip with Japanese students.

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia

Surfers Paradise Road Trip South Australia reminds me of the last frontier and a great road trip I took in 2003. Three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & I travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Coober Pedy in South Australia, a fascinating opal mining town where most of the population live in underground houses, then on to Ayers Rock and back home to the Gold Coast via Hervey Bay where we went whale watching. On our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

The above photo is at Tenterfield on the New England Highway.

Our first day on the road, we will overnight in Broken Hill.

Trades Hall in Broken Hill.

The Trades Hall is Broken Hill’s most historically important building.

Typical outback building

In the 19th and early 20th century Broken Hill was home to a community of Afghans. Afghans worked as camel drivers in parts of outback Australia, and they made a significant contribution to economic growth when transport options were limited. The camel drivers formed the first sizeable Muslim communities in Australia, and in Broken Hill they left their mark in the form of the first mosque in NSW (1891).

Wilmington South Australia

Wilmington is a farming community, known for sheep, wheat and barley, but more recently for the planting of olive groves.

This was at Byron Bay near the start of our journey.

Melbas on the Park

Surfers Paradise Sydney Road Trip

I first visited this iconic bar on New Years Day 1982, 35 years ago. The reason I am so sure of the date is it was the day after my unforgettable NYE on Sydney harbour with my overloaded boat being showered by sky rockets.

First stop Kingscliff only a 40 minute drive.

Just a quick stop for a very good breakfast and some photos.

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

November 6, 2014 by David Herd

Port Fairy

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island along the Great Ocean Road via Apollo Bay is one of the great Australian road trips. I took the car ferry across Port Phillip Bay from Queenscliff to Sorrento.

Port Fairy guest houses

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

At the 2006 census, Port Fairy had a population of 2,599. Its main industries are tourism and fishing, and it is the home port for one of Victoria’s largest fishing fleets. A pharmaceutical factory owned by Glaxo Smith Kline is located on the outskirts of the town. Port Fairy was voted as one of the world’s most livable cities with a population under 20,000 after winning the 2012 International LivCom award.

Apollo Bay

Nice little town however I wouldn’t rush back.

I’m reminded of the early 70s when I often use to visit this great part of Australia.

Interesting house on the Ocean Great Road.

A spectacular home dominating the hill.

Cape Patton Lookout

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

Cape Patton lookout on the Great Ocean Road. About 5km on the Apollo Bay side of Kennet River is the high lookout at Cape Patton. The lookout offers more spectacular ocean outlooks and an equally spectacular panorama of the long sweep of ocean beaches culminating in Apollo Bay, along with the impossibly green hills of the hinterland.

Port Fairy Phillip Island by road, there is a shortcut, the ferry takes you from Queenscliff to Sorrento.

Naturally I had to order a wine

Excellent with my very good steak.

The pub is a very lively place that attracts the locals as well as backpackers. Each night they offer a special from the restaurant, I must say steak was excellent & cooked to perfection.

I stayed at the Coachman Motel just one block from the beach & shops. The room & internet was excellent as was the price through AGODA.

Cowes at Phillip Island

Road Trip Port Fairy Phillip Island

Phillip Island is a tourist destination visited by 3.5 million people annually. The Penguin Parade at Phillip Island Nature Park, in which Little Penguins come ashore in groups, attracts visitors from all over the world. They come to see one of the few areas where this species of penguin can be seen.

The island is recognized as having some of the most consistently reliable and varied surf conditions in the country. The island has hosted various surf events in the past, such as the Rip Curl Pro in 2005 and the Roxy Pro Women’s Surfing Festival.

Other events include the Churchill Island Working Horse and Pioneer Festival.

Motorsport

Phillip Island is steeped in the history of Australian motor racing. A circuit composed of the island’s interior roads was used for the original Australian Grand Prix in 1928 and continued to be used for the race up until 1935. In 1952 the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club was formed. They commenced construction on the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit which opened in 1956. In 1960 the original Armstrong 500 was held, although with the bridge to the mainland unable to support heavy hotmix bitumen equipment the track broke after the third running of the race in 1962. In 1963 the race relocated to the Mount Panorama Circuit and over time evolved into the race known today as the Bathurst 1000.

The circuit closed in the late 1970s but was redeveloped and re-opened in 1989 to host the first international version of the Australian motorcycle Grand Prix. It continues to host the race today and is also a venue for the Superbike World Championship, V8 Supercars and the Australian Drivers’ Championship.
