Shinkansen Japan’s high speed bullet trains

December 11, 2016 by David Herd

Shinkansen Japan’s high speed bullet trains

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains Shinkansen Japan’s high speed bullet trains are the perfect way to see this wonderful country. Rather than arrive at an airport 2 hours before your flight simply travel to the centre of one city to centre of the next.

Tokyo was the start of my trip

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains My good friend Kayo came to Tokyo Station to help me sort of all the tickets for my trip to six cities I had never seen before.

Currently a Japanese rail pass can only be purchased outside the country however from March 8th 2017 selected Japanese stations will sell them at a more expensive price.

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

As of January 2017 $100 usd = 11,695 Yen.

Tokyo to Kanazawa 4 hours

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

One thing to keep in mind, I stay in budget hotels which are usually near the station. In many cities you can’t check in until 3 or 4 pm. Often I would just leave my luggage and head off to the nearest attraction.

My hotel was great value in a perfect location with free WiFi, book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount.

How about the edible gold leaf?

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Kanazawa’s history with gold leaf began 400 years ago. Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) used to make gold leaf, Kanazawa now is the only remaining production hub of the coveted craft.

Kanazawa to Hiroshima about 5 hours

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

Hiroshima was an emotional experience that I’ll never forget. Seventy one years ago at 8.15 am on August 6th 1945 U.S. pilots dropped an atomic bomb which instantly killed 140,000 people.

As if that was not shocking enough 3 days later they killed 70,000 in Nagasaki.

For a super room rate in a great location with free WiFi just book through THIS LINK.

Cenotaph & park

Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park A memorial is held here every year on August 6th.

Hiroshima to Kumamoto 2 hours 40 minutes

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

I was on my my to Kagoshima so I thought I would stop for one night to see the damage done to the castle by the recent earthquake.

My budget hotel was in an excellent location, good rooms with free WiFi, for a great rate just book using THIS LINK.

Three years to repair wall

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains The city hopes to repair the main keep within three years, while the rest of the grounds are expected to require about 20 years to be fully repaired.

Kumamoto to Kagoshima 2 hours

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

Well worth a visit, the city lies opposite an active volcano.

Wonderful smiling faces

Kagoshima restaurant village Some things in Japan you can be sure of, happy smiling faces, they love to be in a photograph, & people are just so nice & polite.

My hotel was only 10 minutes walk to lots of restaurants & the ferry terminal, a great location with free Wi Fi and a great room rate if you book through THIS LINK.

Kagoshima to Nagasaki 2 hours

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

I had heard a lot aout Nagasaki so I was eagerly looking forward to visiting this seaside city, in particular the atom bomb site & Battleship Island.

 My favourite Nagasaki sign

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains It’s on billboards, the side of trains & trams, wonderful Japanese humour. 🙂

My hotel was only a three minute walk to the station. Rated highly by AGODA, book through THIS LINK for an excellent room rate with free WiFi.

Nagasaki to Fukuoka 2.5 hours

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

The final leg of my Shinkansen rail trip through Japan.

I would certainly recommend the hotel Ascent, for a very good discount just book through THIS LINK.

Craving a change of cuisine

Fukuoka Kyushu Island Japan As much as I love Japanese food after 2 weeks I was craving a change. The fabulous pizza is a speciality at Gorm’s, part of a Danish restaurant chain, opened 2014 in Nagasaki & shortly after in Fukuoka.

Fukuoka was anther surprise packet, lots of things to see and do. Think about flying into Tokyo & out of Fukuoka as I did, travel by bullet train in between these 2 cities.

On the way to Osaka in October 2015 with my friend Hamish

Shinkansen Japan's high speed bullet trains

Hamish of course is world famous for the number of selfies he takes. 🙁 Look closely and you can see me in the background. 🙂

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

December 6, 2016 by David Herd

Tokyo is a wonderful city

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station were the main areas where I spent my time in October 2016. Three nights and 2 days is just not enough time to fully enjoy this great city. It was however my staring point for my 2 week 6 city adventure on the Shinkansen or bullet train.

I travelled to 6 interesting Japanese cities, includung Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Nagasaki & Fukuoka

 Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Lets start around the Tsukiji area, here is my friend Kayo inspecting the produce. 🙂

Sushizanmai

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station My favourite sushi restaurant located close to the Tsukiji seafood market.

We both love Sushizanmai

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station I have also eaten in their braches in Osaka, Hiroshima & Fukuoka.

The eel is absolutely fabulous

photo IMG_5001.jpg There is always a queue waiting to get in, make sure you sit at the sushi counter on the ground floor.

Bluefin Tuna Sells for $117,000 at Tokyo Auction

I have stayed in two excellent budget hotels very close to Sushizanmai, use these links to book and get a very good rate. Hotel Tokyu-Stay and Hotel Ban.

 Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Around the Tsukiji market area there are many sidewalk stores selling fresh seafood. The huge market was supposed to relocate by now, the 81-year old fish market is one of the largest of its kind in the world and is a Tokyo cultural icon.

Many stores will cook for you

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Many people rate the market as the number one attraction in Tokyo.

Everyone deserves a break

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

He probably started work at 3 am so it’s time for a break. 🙂

My hotel was great value in a perfect location with free WiFi, book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount.

We say farewell to the Tsukiji market area

photo IMG_5036.jpg However I can assure you we shall return. 🙂

Lets take a 15 minute walk to Ginza.

photo IMG_5043.jpg On the way we pass the famous Kabuki Theatre.

The theatre dates to 1889 & has been destroyed by fire, earthquakes and war. It re-opened in 2013 and attracts 900,000 visitors a year.

Tokyo love buildings with a twist

 Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

One of the great attractions in Japan is seeing the oild and the new.

The Ginza

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Back in the 1990s real estate in the Ginza was unbelievably expensive, one square meter of land was over 100 million yen. Prices now in 2016 have fallen dramatically however the area is still very expensive.

You can buy anything in the Ginza

photo IMG_5049.jpg Just make sure you have your black Amex card with you. 🙂

 Kayo & I at a Spanish restaurant

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station Close to my hotel there were a number of restaurants including this Spanish one.

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station          Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station          Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

Kayo had a snack & I stuck to the beers & red wine.

Instead of Spanish I chose a busy noisy Japanese restaurant

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station I had only been in Tokyo 24 hours so I was craving Japanese food.

Shumai?

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station

These look more Chinese than Japanese. 🙂

This is more like it

 photo IMG_4994.jpg Chicken Yakitori delicious.

So many restaurants

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station And such little time. 🙂

Tokyo Station

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station There is now a bus from Narita that will bring you to a stop opposite Tokyo Station or Sukiyabashi crossing in Ginza for only 1000 Yen.

Adjacent to Tokyo Station

The lights of Tokyo at night are magnificent.

Akihabara

Tsukiji Sushi Teriyaki Tokyo Station famous for its hundres or perhaps thousands electronic shops.

My hotel was excellent.

Loving Pattaya life 2016 (B)

August 3, 2016 by David Herd

This is not a travel blog just my personal photo collection from the 2nd half of 2016.

Another birthday rolls around July 7.

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Loving Pattaya life 2016 has seen me spend all year here, the quietest travel year I have had this century. I over spent in the last 2 or 3 years so I thought I should pull my horns in. 🙂

I spent 5 days in Koh Samui in June, 2 weeks in Australia in August and a great trip to Japan in October.

Some of the usual suspects

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Greg, Hamish & John helped me celebrate at the Mantra.

Loving Pattaya life 2016          Loving Pattaya life 2016          Loving Pattaya life 2016

A year living in Pattaya seems like about 6 months, time just seems to fly.

Great beach shot August 4th at 7am

Loving Pattaya life 2016

All the boats are waiting for the hordes of Chinese tourists.

And here they come in their thousands

Loving Pattaya life 2016 The busses roll into Beach Road of a morning and the tourists flock to the boats.

Tony & Nikki Murphy at Signature Steak & Seafood.

Loving Pattaya life 2016
The Murphy’s spent a week in Pattaya then 3 nights in Mae Pim before flying back to Australia.

Visitors from San Diego

Paul & crew @ BJs breakfast It was great to catch up with Paul, Eileen, Parker & Elle in Pattaya as part of their 9 week Asian holiday with included Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Koh Samui, Koh Samet & Danang.

Loving Pattaya life 2016        Loving Pattaya life 2016            Loving Pattaya life 2016

I have decided to meet them in Las Vegas next June before staying for a week or so at their home in San Diego. I have also promised myself a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon plus a few days in Central America, maybe Belize or Panama depending on my research? Finally a few days in Tokyo on the way home.

Seagulls in Pattaya?

Loving Pattaya life 2016

Here is a sculpture on Beach Rd showing a flock of seagulls, yet to this day I have never seen a seagull in Pattaya. 🙂

Here comes the rain

Loving Pattaya life 2016 I love seeing the black clouds roll in over Pattaya.

The “odd couple” Larry Krausz & Steven Reade

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Steve is a great mate of Larry’s from the Gold Coast. Terrific news for movie goers which vastly overshadows the recent Brangelina bullshit, the “odd couple” Larry Krausz & Steven Reade have been signed by BangBros, the largest porn studio in the world, to star in a remake of the 1988 movie Twins, which stared Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito. See if you can pick who will play DeVito. 🙂

The more thigs change the more they stay the same

Loving Pattaya life 2016 After many years the Cherry bar on Soi 3 & 2nd Rd has been sold and is now Billabong 2.

Loving Pattaya life 2016          photo Billabong 2 opening party 14.jpg          Loving Pattaya life 2016

And the beat goes on.

When can we have some fun?

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Every night you go out in Pattaya the fun starts.

Good coffee & happy staff

Loving Pattaya life 2016 They are the first to open at the Bay, next will be McDonalds.

Stunning November sunset

Loving Pattaya life 2016

So many great sunsets from myy balcony.

My new home

Loving Pattaya life 2016 On November 1st after 4.5 years I moved from the 17th floor in Markland to the 20th, does that mean I coming up in the world?

The usual suspects

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Jim’s Burgers is a great place for a casul dinner with friends, I’m with Hamish, Jonathon & Matt.

Delicious

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Lots of varieties & you can order small or large.

One of my massage girls

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Used to be a waitress in Chamiko in Soi 3, now she works at a massage parlour in Soi 3 & sometines gives me a reasonable foot massage.

Spectacular clouds over Koh Larn

Loving Pattaya life 2016 These days I seem to be obbsessed with taking photos of clouds & sunsets. 🙂

October in Japan

Loving Pattaya life 2016 I m with my friend Kayo in a Spanish restaurant in Tokyo. I purchased a two week ticket on the Shinkansen or bullet train, then after 3 nights in Tokyo I travelled to 6 interesting Japanese cities, includung Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Nagasaki & Fukuoka

I arrived back in Pattaya on Ocober 28th & the following day my good friend Larry Krausz was rushed to Bangkok Pattaya hospital after suffering a major stroke, now 5 weeks later on December 5th he is still in a serious condition in the intensive care ward.

Ross & Bryce arrive from Australia

Notice for some strange reason known only to Pothole, all his children including daughter Tamara have to have a first name starting with the letter T. Just another one of his many offbeat strange quirks. 🙂 The lovely Japanese girl in the photo is my friend Kayo from Tokyo.

Shopping for a dress in Soi 6

Loving Pattaya life 2016 Even though Soi 6 is one of the wildest streets in Pattaya there is still time for some quiet shopping. 🙂

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one

March 6, 2016 by David Herd

Ryokan Shirouma-so

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one Winter Resort has many good hotels as you would expect, Shirouma-so is a modern Japanese ryokan (inn) combining both traditional wood and modern Japanese ”Wa” architectural styles, resulting in a creative and beautiful design This traditional hot spring hotel is surrounded by trees and only 10 km from Mount Shirouma and 12 km from Lake Aoki.

The mountain awaits

Hakuba Happo-one Winter Resort  The ryokan is 500M away from the main ski resort called Happo One so it’s an easy walk to and from the lifts at the base, only takes 10-15 mins.  Very quiet with no line ups at any of the lifts jut jump straight on every time.

Nice rooms

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one  Shirouma-so is a traditional Ryokan, rather than a hotel, you have traditional room and the beds are put out a night on the floor. Shared showers plus it has a Onasen (bath house) in the basement, and a very traditional Japanese breakfast as you would expect. Use this link for an exceptional room rate.

Small rooms

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one All hotel rooms in Japan are rather small and this is no exception.

Hotel restaurant

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one

In my book there is no better food in the world than Japanese.

Wonderful Japanese food

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one Over the centuries Japanese people have made eating and food an art form.

Hamish Elton

Hakuba Happo-one Winter Resort My friend Hamish is building up his strength for the slopes. I introduced him to Japanese culture in October 2015 and he is now hooked.

Ski Japan Hakuba Happo-one Well, it’s certainly not the A team, like his golf Hamish needs a little improvement to his downhill slalom technique.

Hakuba Happo-one Winter Resort According to Hamish 80% of all the skiers were Australians who were enjoying both the fabulous conditions and lower prices than Australia.

Catch me if you can Hamish

No doubt about it, the boys really looked the part.

Engaku-ji Temple Kamakura Japan

October 13, 2015 by David Herd

Kamakura Station

Engaku-ji Temple Kamakura Japan Engaku-ji Temple Kamakura Japan was about 1 hour 20 minutes by train from Tokyo travelling south through Yokohama. Followed by a short walk to the temple.

Engakuji Temple is a short walk from Kita-Kamakura Station on the JR Yokosuka Line coming from Tokyo Station and Shinagawa Station.

Up the stairs

Engaku-ji Temple Kamakura Japan The ancient temple was founded in 1282 by a Chinese Zen monk through it’s patron Japan’s ruler Hojo Tokimune of the Kamakura Shogunate.

Engakuji Temple was founded in the Kamakura Period of Japanese history on the instructions of regent Hojo Tokimune, who had successfully fought off the two Mongolian invasions of Japan in the late 13th century with the help of fortuitous typhoons known as kamikaze, which had destroyed the invading ships in harbour.

Tokyo Towers Temples Skyscrapers

October 9, 2015 by David Herd

From the Tokyo Tower

Tokyo Tower Tokyo Towers Temples Skyscrapers make this one of the world’s truly great cities. When you add wonderful people, great food & restaurants you have the whole package. This September 2015 trip was my 4th visit to which has now become my favourite city.

Tokyo Towers Temples Skyscrapers                    Tokyo Tower Japan

Tokyo Tower

The photos above were taken from the observation deck of the Tokyo Tower. Built in 1958, the tower’s main sources of revenue are tourism and antenna leasing. Over 150 million people have visited the tower since its opening. FootTown, a four-story building located directly under the tower, houses museums, restaurants and shops. Departing from there, guests can visit two observation decks. The two-story Main Observatory is located at 150 metres (490 ft), while the smaller Special Observatory reaches a height of 249.6 metres (819 ft

Ladies at the Ginza

Ginza Tokyo

Today the kimono are most often worn by women, and on special occasions. Traditionally, unmarried women wore a style of kimono called furisode, with almost floor-length sleeves, on special occasions. A few older women and even fewer men still wear the kimono on a daily basis. Men wear the kimono most often at weddings, tea ceremonies, and other very special or very formal occasions. Professional sumo wrestlers are often seen in the kimono because they are required to wear traditional Japanese dress whenever appearing in public.

The Ginza

Tokyo Towers Temples Skyscrapers One of the best known intersections in the world.  Ginza is recognized by many as one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world, attracting visitors and regulars alike from across the globe.

 Bright lights of Memory Lane

Piss Alley TokyoThe collection of small Shinjuku bars evocatively called Piss Alley (‘Shonben Yokocho’) — or Memory Lane (‘Omoide Yokocho’), as the authorities would rather you call it — is a sliver of post-war Japanese culture a few minutes walk from Shinjuku station. The cramped alley of restaurant and bar stalls offers a ‘nostalgic’ experience, which means something like visiting a decrepit shanty-town.

Harajuku Girls Tokyo

July 22, 2015 by David Herd

Harajuku Girls Tokyo

Harajuku Girls Tokyo Harajuku Girls Tokyo originated among teens on the streets near Harajuku Station in Shibuya, Japan. It may have been brought to many people’s attention by American singer Gwen Stefani, but the evolution of the style certainly didn’t begin with her and it certainly won’t end with her. Like many “street fashions” it is difficult to characterise because it is constantly changing and because it has many manifestations.

Very cute indeed

Harajuku Girls Tokyo

These photos were taken a few years ago, I believe now in 2016 there are not as many girls gathering here every Sunday.

Comparing notes

photo Fabulous Harajuku girls 001 4.jpgMix and (mis)match different fashions. What is now known as Harajuku (like Halloween in Japan every Sunday) style started as teens in the district began to integrate traditional Japanese attire, especially kimonos and geta sandals, into their wardrobe. Before, they wore primarily clothes that were influenced by the West, but by mixing the traditional with the modern, they created a new style. Other examples of mixing and matching including the punk look with the schoolgirl uniform or a goth look with designer clothes. In Harajuku, mixing different styles and mismatching colours and patterns is encouraged – you can do anything you want, as long as your outfit is a thoughtful expression of your individuality.

Lots of style here

Harajuku Shibuya  It’s impossible to pinpoint one “Harajuku style.” Many styles have originated or developed on the streets of Harajuku, and many Harajuku girls (and boys) integrate one or more of these somewhat more defined styles into their outfits.

Pink is my colour

Harajuku Girls Tokyo Decora style favours bright colours, flamboyance and accessories from head to toe. You decorate yourself with plastic toys and jewellery, and it’s not uncommon to have so many that you can hear them click together when the person moves

Here I am

Harajuku Girls Tokyo I just had to get a shot with the Harajuku Girls Tokyo.

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCTokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC, plus Florianopolis, Belnario Camboriu, and Curitiba. In 2007 my 2 month trip which turned out to be one of the two best around the world journeys I have ever done.

Anyone for coffee?

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC Food, food and more food, you gotta love Tokyo. It is certainly one of my favourite cities in the world. In fact I was here for the first time in April this year and loved it so much I’m back in December.

Joan and Bill from Wiltshire

photo IMG_1781.jpgIn fact we were having dinner in Bath, I was travelling to Dorchester the next day with Bill to visit his brother Alan who was a guest of Her Majesty.

Gold Hill, Shaftesbury

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCGold Hill is a steep cobbled street in the town of Shaftesbury in the English county of Dorset. It is famous for its picturesque appearance; the view looking down from the top of the street has been described as “one of the most romantic sights in England

Lisbon

photo Fado restaurant Lisbon 21.jpg Fado  is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins.

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC Lisbon is a great city for food as you can clearly see. 🙂

Rio de Janeiro NYE Copacabana

photo IMG_2296.jpg December 2007 and the city is winding up for New Years Eve. After a couple of weeks I will go to Curitiba to meet my friend Craig aka Sudzy from Australia, then after visiting a few cities we will head back to Rio for Carnival

Sergio, do you think our ship will ever come in?

photo Dec 24 5.jpg Beautiful Copacabana and the first of nine cruise ships arrive for NYE

Curitiba

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCA nice city south of Sao Paulo however one visit is enough, there are more interesting places further south as you will see.

Curitiba

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCI met my friend Craig from Australia and we set out for Florianopolis.

Florianopolis.

Joaquina BeachFlorianopolis wonderful Brazilian city, the photo above is Joaquina beach which is famous throughout the world for surfing.

Florianopolis.

Barra da LagoaBarra da Lagoa Beach has good waves, clear water and a tropical rain-forest, this makes Barra da Lagoa the kind of place you can easily loose track of time! Just sit back and watch the pretty girls at play.

Balneário Camboriú a Brazilian surprise

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCWe had never heard of this place until we were in Florianopolis and what a fabulous surprise it turned out to be.

Balneário Camboriú

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCA similar statue to Rio de Janeiro. Balneário Camboriú is famous for the cable car which (uniquely in the world) links the two beaches of Balneário Camboriú and Laranjeiras. The town is located 10 km (6.2 mi) south of the city of Itajaí and 80 km (50 mi) north of the state capital, Florianópolis, and has a population of 94,344 (2007 census office estimate), which swells to over one million in the summer.

Balneário Camboriú

Balneário CamboriúAntonio cycled around the world for UNESCO in 1999, on his trip the both times he was robbed was in Australia while the Olympics were on in 2000. And people say Brazil is dangerous. :)

Paraty

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCIt’s Probably not hard to guess why this is my favourite photo, a rose between two thorns, I don’t think so. :) Paraty grew in the 18th century as a strategically important port for exporting the gold mined in Minas Gerais. When shipments in nearby Rio began to attract the attention and ambition of pirates and privateers from rival European powers, the Portuguese began using Paraty as their safe port for getting their gold to Lisbon.

Magnificent Brazilian girl

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC

To see more of this beautiful creature just follow THIS LINK.

Take me to your leader

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYC Once a year, when the great Rio De Janeiro carnival takes place, the coastal town Paraty which is located 250 km south west to Rio, holds a unique carnival. In Paraty’s Mud Carnival – (Portuguese: Bloco da lama) the costumes that its participants wear is black sticky mud which is smeared on their bodies. The carnival preserves the ancient local tradition when the Indians smeared their bodies with black mud for medical reasons, and held ritual ceremonies in order to bring cure to the ill. In contrary to Rio carnival where the participants wear marvelous colored costumes, in Paraty carnival the fiesta is based mostly on the simplicity of the junction between men and nature.

 Back to Rio for Carnival

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCAfter a fascinating trip down south we head back to Rio for Carnival.

 Carnival in Ipanema

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCIpanema Carnival street party was one of the best nights in my life with my friend Dave Wylie. There was a “bloco” going on in front of the restaurant.  A “bloco” is a block party during carnival.  There are hundreds of them just in Rio. They are organized by local Carnival groups and the best ones move up the food chain of blocks to become the big samba schools that put on the big Carnival parades each year that Rio is famous for. We had a window table at “Garota de Ipanema” with of course means “The Girl from Ipanema”, and this is the exact spot the song was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel.

With Dave Wylie at Garota de Ipanema

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCHere I am with my good friend Dave Wylie at our window table at Garota de Ipanema. All night the action was all around us as you can see from the photos. As I said earlier Ipanema Carnival it was one of the best and most memorable nights of my life. Another equally memorable night was 4 weeks earlier, New Years Eve on Copacabana, simply awesome.

Garota de Ipanema

Tokyo London Lisbon Rio NYCThis crazy guy was so funny, he was absolutely smashed and spoke to Dave Wylie who is fluent in Portuguese, he said “Voce sabe quem eu sou?” (do you know who I am?”) “Eu sou o deus de dor da cabesa”) (I am the God of Headaches”).

I love New York

photo 7th Thursday 17.jpgAs I said before New York is my favourite city, I like to say to friends, if the cities of the world could be likened to a horse race, New York would win by 10 lengths over the next bunch of cities which would include Paris, London, Sydney, Bangkok, Tokyo, Rome, Budapest, AmsterdamRio De Janeiro & Cape Town, not necessarily in that order.
