Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

April 14, 2017 by David Herd | 0 comments

Incredible landscape

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine, nowhere else in the world have I seen colours similar to outback Australia. Red earth, blackened trees and a beautiful blue sky.

I took three Japanese students, Yukako, Megumi & Noriko & travelled from the Gold Coast in Queensland, through Broken Hill  NSW to Cooper Pedy on the first leg of our journey on the way to Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Excitement

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine The girls started clapping wildly when they saw the kangaroo sign so you can imagine how excited they were when they saw a live one.

Here we are in Coober Pedy

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine You know when you are near the town when you see all the mounds of dirt & gravel.

OK, what are we waiting for?

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Let’s go & check out this underground village.

My trusty Holden Commodore was our transport on our marathon journey all through the Australian Outback we traveled 7,300 kilometers  which was around 82 hours behind the wheel.

Mini mountains everywhere

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine Coober Pedy is a town in northern South Australia, 846 km north of Adelaide. The 2011 census showed its population was 1,695 (953 males, 742 females, including 275 indigenous Australians). The town is sometimes referred to as the “opal capital of the world” due to the quantity of precious opals that are mined there.

 Men at work

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This was our first indication of work happening around the mines.

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine As you can clearly see not all the people live underground.

 Opal capital of the World

photo 594a05c9-2ec2-49a7-b40a-dccf5dd15fa6.jpg There are quite a few opal shops, restaurants and a variety of accommodation ranging from four star to backpackers and caravan/camping areas.

Desert Cave Hotel

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

The hotel has rooms above ground and in underground caves, this relaxed hotel is a 14-minute walk from the Big Winch Lookout. For an excellent discount just book through THIS LINK.

Big Winch Lookout

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine The famous historic Big Winch Scenic Lookout with 360 degrees view of the town.

Is this Coober Pedy art?

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine To be honest with you I have no idea what it is. 🙂

On the other hand….

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This may well be the brother of “Tin Man” from The Wizard of Oz. 🙂

 On the subject of movies

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine This monster was apparently part of a movie set that has been abandoned and left here as a talking point.

We have finished the first stage of our Journey.

Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine

Next stop is Uluru aka Ayers Rock.

Thanks for visiting my Blue Sky Red Earth Coober Pedy Opal Mine photo blog.

Personally I preferred the city in the 70s & 80s before the explosion of modern high rise hotels and apartments. Having said all that, it is quite a spectacular part of Australia.

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok

March 22, 2016 by David Herd

Totally awesome

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower BangkokSirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok is one of the best rooftop restaurants bars in the world. In fact I really doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok. I would certainly like to know if there is any place more spectacular than Sirocco which is located of the 64th floor of the State Tower building in Bangkok.

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok Otherwise known as the Dome the distinctive gold roof glints in the Bangkok sunshine and can be seen from all over this great city. The tower is also home to the Lebua Hotel, for a great room rate just use this link.

Sunset from Sirocco Sky Bar Bangkok

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok Sky bar at Sirocco is amazing, the restaurant is very popular with the trendy Bangkok crowd, the food is good but the price is ridiculously high.

Centre Point Silom Hotel

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok

One of my favourite Bangkok Hotels, use this link to book and get a great room rate.

 Centre Point Hotel Silom

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok Great location close to the Sky Train and the river ferries. One of the nicest ways to spend an hour in Bangkok is cruising along the mighty Chao Phraya river. The river ferry takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.

Back to Sirocco

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok Here are some friends of mine from Wiltshire west of London. Naturally among the many places I showed them in Bangkok Sirocco was a must see. Of course we also did a canal cruise on a long-tail boat.

Fabulous food

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok As you would expect the food is fabulous but the price is very high. Make sure you have your credit card with you. 🙂

Beautiful smile at Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok

Bangkok before & after sunset

Bangkok Silom Sky Bar Cloud 47

Bangkok Sky Bar Cloud 47 in Sathorn Rd is one of the many wonderful Sky bars in this great city. Much more casual and affordable than the others with an amazing city view.

Looking toward Baiyoke Tower

Bangkok Silom Sky Bar Cloud 47 About 45 minutes before sunset  in this city of 8 million people.

A closer look at Baiyoke Tower

Bangkok’s tallest building

MahaNakhon is a luxury mixed-use skyscraper currently under construction in the Silom/Sathon central business area of Bangkok. Designed to fit into the Thai landscape with a unique pixelated facade, it will have the unconventional appearance of a glass curtain walled square tower with a cuboid-surfaced spiral cut into the side of the building. Upon its estimated completion in 2015, it will become the tallest building in Bangkok at 314 metres (1,030 ft), with 77 floors. Featuring hotel, retail and residences, 200 units of The Ritz-Carlton Residences, Bangkok inside the building are priced between around US$1,100,000 to US$17,000,000, making it one of the most expensive condominiums in Bangkok. From Wikipedia.

My favourite time of the day

Bangkok Sky Bar Cloud 47 Such an exciting sight to see the lights of the “Big Mango” start to come to life.

 Bangkok traffic

Larry is quenching his thirst

Bangkok Silom Sky Bar Cloud 47 My friend Larry Krausz has recently moved to Thailand from Australia, we have known each other for quite a while, in fact in 1999 we travelled around the world including Carnival in Rio de Janeiro.

Absolutely breathtaking

Bangkok Silom Sky Bar Cloud 47 City views don’t get much better than this.

A great night

Bangkok Silom Sky Bar Cloud 47 This certainly was a night to remember, Cloud 47 will become one of my regular Bangkok haunts. For those of you who like to boogie the band starts at 9 pm.

Remember the name

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

December 24, 2015 by David Herd

Absolutely amazing

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok offers a breathtaking view of this wonderful city. Perched on the 56th floor at Centara Grand Hotel on top of Central World shopping Mall.

Bistro and bar

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok A huge wines selection at the bistro which occupies the entire 55th floor, both indoor and outdoor dining sections to choose from, and the solely outdoor bar deck of the 56th floor wraps around the circular core of the building providing an uninterrupted 360 degree panorama of the amazing Bangkok metropolis.

Happy hour is 5 to 7 pm

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok Buy one get one free is a good deal as the price as you would expect at such a venue is rather high. A Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 so getting 2 for 1 is a good deal.

After happy hour finishes

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok Well that’s another story, some friends turned up and Lisa from Townsville was drinking champagne which turned out to be B1,100 per glass, which equals $42 AUD or $30 USD. Now that’s not really a problem but her and her friend John left without paying, subsequently Greg, the little guy in the middle got stuck with a huge drink bill. 🙂

Enough of that, back to the amazing view.

Red Sky Bar Central World Bangkok

The Baiyoke tower is 85 stories and is the tallest building in Bangkok, it includes the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, the tallest hotel in Southeast Asia and the seventh-tallest all-hotel structure in the world.

Game changer

Newton Abbott in Devon

Newton AbbottI an find only two reasons anybody would want to visit Newton Abbott in Devon. First I understand it is quite famous for horse racing, secondly, and this was my reason, there is a low security prison where I paid a very good friend a visit. This is the 4th English prison I have been to in the last 8 years. Last year it was Stafford, before that Dovegate and finally Dorchester.

London Underground

London blue skyIf you are spending a few days in London make sure you buy an Oyster Card for the underground as well as the London busses. Only 30 Quid for unlimited travel, a terrific saving.

Holiday Inn Kensington

London blue sky This is also a terrific location, in fact it is opposite my budget hotel the Villa Kensington. There is a huge price difference, 300 Quid for the Holiday inn  and 65 for Villa Kensington.
