Harlan Goldstein Food plus Personality, add to this craft beers, excellent wines, creative cocktails with funky music & crazy staff, you wind up with a fabulous and unique Pattaya restaurant venue that is rapidly gathering a cult following.

The 56-year-old started out as a young boy in his uncle’s New York restaurant and worked his way up to the kitchen of the three Michelin-starred La Francaise in Chicago, eventually coming to Asia as the executive chef at Shangri-La’s China World Hotel in Beijing. He is pictured here with Wayne & Sally Schmidt from Australia who are enjoying an extended world trip including several magic months in Thailand.

Mark discovered this gem of a restaurant hidden away on a side street on Pratumnak Hill & has become a regular visitor. As you can see Mark loves Harlan’s Bloody Marys.

Harlan seems to be forever on the move, either preparing his creations in the small open kitchen to circumnavigating the restaurant like a force of nature. Constantly carrying his camera (phone) in one hand & usually a cold beer in the other. 🙂

He occasionally pauses to ring the bell

Thus signalling a round of tequila shots for everyone in the room including his friends drinking outside on the veranda.

You may get a little confused at this rather unique venue, I found myself wondering if I was at a restaurant or a private party.

What about the food you cry????

Sorry it took me so long to mention the fine fare. 🙂 For our Sunday there was a set menu giving 5 choices of food from around the world. Cuban, Italian, Thai, Argentinian & Mexican ranging from B600 to B1000. Whichever one you chose included a variety of excellent entres & desert.

The sliders above were one of the entres & were absolutely delicious, thankfully Hamish has banned bread from his diet so I ate his as well as mine.

From the top right we have the Argentinian Steak at B998 which literally melted in your mouth, it was huge & I imaging they made zero on it. Next is the Mexican battered fish, sorry to say I was disappointed with it, not much fish & batter too thick, please forgive me Harlan. Next the Italian spaghetti with prawns, & finally the Cuban chicken. (I should have ordered this or the Cuban Chicken)

Finally the magnificent desert.

This was soooo bloody good. 🙂

Keep that booze coming baby…

The food price is very reasonably given the quality & flare, the money maker for Harlan would certainly be the booze.

A great place for a party

I honestly can’t think of a better place in Pattaya for a party, if you have enough friends (and I don’t) just book out the whole restaurant & have a night you will never forget.

My great friend Hamish Elton (aka the selfie king) with two of his great friends Wayne & Sally Schmidt, clearly Wayne is punching way above his weight. 🙂

Eat me drink me

Hamish & May returned for dinner November 8th 2018

They live in Vision condo just an 11 minute walk away. I’m betting they didn’t walk. 🙂

The cost including one cocktail & 3 glasses of white wine was B2,800, or $85 USD.

Prawn Paella, Fish Taco & Sliced Pork in Tuna Cream Sauce, all delicious according to Hamish. 🙂

Big Changes Nana Plaza

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 are taking place right now in March 2018. A huge roof is being built over the Plaza & the bars in the centre are being built again.

Lucky Lukes is still the same

First bar on the right as you enter.

VW bar at the back

Quite a nice addition to the plaza, apparently it has been here 3 years yet I rarely venture to the back of Nana.

Playschool is an old favourite revamped

Lollipop makes a comeback. It was Suckers & before that Lollipop again.

Here it is in 2017.

This to me is the quintessential Nana Plaza photo, sums up many of the customers. 🙂

Re-building the bars, again.

This is at least the 3rd time the bars in the centre courtyard have been re-built, I have a feeling the current owners will do it right this time.

Turn the clock back to 1997

My first visit was 1997 which was the start of a long and happy connection, not necessarily because of the Thai girls who are there basically to relieve you of your hard earned cash, more because of the great times I have enjoyed with friends from all over the world. Check out this photo blog which showcases them and many of the gorgeous babes we got tangled up with over these decades of decadence. 🙂

Let’s wander down Soi 4

This is one of about 4 Hillary bars.

New kid on the block

Just a short stroll down Soi 4 on the opposite side of the road.

Located in front of the old Rajah hotel.

The bars offer a nice alternative to the rowdy Nana Plaza.

Opposite Broadway is the Red Zone

Apart from the new bars there are a couple of high rise buildings under construction, hotels or condos, not sure which.

Used to be Bangkok & before that Spellbound

The more things change the more they stay the same. I first came to Nana Plaza in 1996, & here I am again in October 2018 drinking ice cold Tiger beer & listening to the Eagles sing Hotel California, the perfect song for this incredible venue. “You can check out anytime you want but you can never leave.”

Big Dogs has also changed a little.

Still a great spot to watch the arrivals.

Excellent Pattaya dentist

Doctor dentist locksmith Car Rental Pattaya, there are so many choices it can be difficult to know who is good and who is average. I have a couple of suggestions I can personally recommend. The dentist you see in the header of this post is Dr Tapasat who can be found in Pattaya North Rd near 3rd Rd. He trained and worked in the U.S.A for 20 years and speaks perfect English. He takes time to talk to you and clearly explains the procedures and alternatives.

Pattaya clinic offers good value services

I regularly get mail from a major Pattaya international hospital advertising their prices for blood tests etc. This month they were offering a service for B3,999 to cover all the usual areas, Cholesterol, triglyceride, urine analysis, blood pressure and pulse. liver & kidney function, blood sugar, hepatitis, EKG, (electrocardiogram) etc etc.

Then a friend told me about Clinic Lifecare Pattaya located 40 meters off 3rd road not far from Tony’s gym at 247/59 Moo 10, Sai 3 Road. They are offering a special at B999 for the month of December. I added a further test for PSA which added B600.

Tradesmen plus health services

The clinic was clean and efficient with friendly staff. I arrived at 7.45 am and was the first customer. The results were e-mailed to me at 6pm the same day.

Good value and service.

One tip is to take a urine sample with you, that will save you going through the process in the clinics bathroom.

Locksmith

I phoned Pattaya keys and safes at 10 am and the Thai owner said he would replace 2 door locks for me between 2 and 3 pm that same day. At 2.30 he called to say he would arrive in 30 minutes and he did. Within 30 minutes both locks were fitted and spare keys handed over for a cost of B1,800.
