Breathtaking view from Red Sky Bar

Spectacular Bangkok Sky Bars

Spectacular Bangkok Sky Bars

Spectacular Bangkok Sky Bars, I really doubt if any city in the world has as many amazing rooftop bar/restaurants than Bangkok. This photo is from the 56th floor of the Red Sky Bar located above CentralWorld.

Happy hour at Red Sky Bar

Spectacular Bangkok Sky Bars Generally as you can imagine Sky Bars are expensive venues, however between 5 & 7 pm buy one get one free is a good deal, for instance  a Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 or $10.50 usd, so getting 2 for 1 is a good value.

I rate Red Sky Bar 5 stars.

I rate Sirocco 5 stars.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

February 16, 2017 by David Herd

Happy hour happy street

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok was a street I had known about for such a long time but had never ventured there until now. It seemed every Bangkok restaurant review would recommend an establishment in this area & now I can understand why.

El Guacho

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I am a great fan of the Wine Connection chain of restaurants & Google told me there was one at 208 Thong Lo 8 Alley so my brother & I caught the Sky train to Thonglo station & walked for 20 minutes or so looking for the restaurant. What we in fact found at the address was El Gaucho, so I’m assuming either Google got it wrong or the information was simply out of date. 🙂

Here is what Googled showed.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok Wine Connection has morphed into El Gaucho.

So many restaurants & so little time.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I have decided on my next visit to Bangkok I will tear myself away from my beloved Soi 11 & stay in Thonglor.

Grand Centrepoint Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Right in the heart of Thonglor, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount. Sukhumvit 55 or Soi Thong Lo, is well known for its classy bars, boutique shops, fashionable clubs plus lots of hip restaurants. Its also acknowledged as the Siam Square of Bangkoks East side.

Absolute luxury

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok These beautiful rooms are 40 M2.

Lots of Japanese restaurants

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I was amazed by the number of Japanese restaurants in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, they were everywhere.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, The Dock

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I am looking forward to having dinner at The Dock, they specialise in seafood & the menu looks excellent. Being an Aussie I love Sydney Rock Oysters as well as those big juicy ones from Tasmania. Kumamoto featured, I was there last October, & Brittany on the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, has over 2800 km of coastline, it provides nearly 60,000 tons of oysters each year, almost 50% of the total French oyster production.

This Soi 55 building caught my eye.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Prior to moving to Thailand from Australia in 2011 I lived on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise. On the beach there is a building called Focus which is the twin of this Soi 55 round building. 🙂

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace

September 8, 2016 by David Herd

Turn the clock back to 1997

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace is an iconic South East Asian red light district. My first visit was 1997 which was the start of a long and happy connection, not necessarily because of the Thai girls who are there basically to relieve you of your hard earned cash, more because of the great times I have enjoyed with friends from all over the world. This photo blog showcases them and many of the gorgeous babes we got tangled up with over these two great decades of decadence. 🙂

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace          Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace          Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace

In the middle photo is Doug Ritchies from Adelaide, he was responsible for introducing me to Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace in 1997. For the last 25 years or more he has lived near Kingscliff just south of the QLD border. I have some great memories from Adelaide in the 70s when Doug & I were on the rampage. 🙂

Sadly four friends featured throughout this photo blog are no longer with us, RIP.

August 1999

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace I’ll throw in some old shots & videos of the plaza however this photo blog is more about the terrific people who will forever be in my memories.

More from 1999

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace          Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace          Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace

The thing I notice most comparing the 90s to 2016 is the LadyBoy population in Nana Plaza has increased buy a huge amount, which really does not suit me at all.

Lovely Jane

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace August 1999 & yes I was another punter finding a gorgeous young girl who was happy to accompany me to Pattaya & Koh Samui.

Soi 4 Nana

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace Those great years in the 90s saw elephants wandering down Soi 4 looking for bananas. Here is my good friend Paul McNeil from San Diego contributing to their appetite.

More from the 90s

photo Nana plaza 3.jpg There has never been a shortage of pretty faces in Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace.

Let’s jump to 2016

photo Nana Plaza suckers 2.jpg For me this is the quintessential shot of Nana Plaza because I can assure you I have met some suckers there over the last 20 years. I’m talking about those delusional types who actually believe the girls who call them “handsome man” & tell them how much they love them. 🙂

Now believe me I’m not knocking the ladies who are there to make a living, I just find it strange so many Farangs can be sucked in by their stories. All these girls either have a Thai boyfriend or husband in the background who gladly accept a fair % of the girls earnings.

December 2014

photo Nana Plaza Dec 13 1.jpg

December 2014 On the right is my friend Roland, a barrister from Sydney, beside him is Matt originally from Adelaide, now running a factory for SMR Automotive in Rayong producing accessories for the motor industry. Here is a funny story, Matt actually receives a hardship allowance from his employer for living in Pattaya, priceless. 🙂 Bow is Matt’s live in girlfriend, a wild child who is a lot of fun after a few drinks.

Straps on the 1st floor.

 photo Nana Plaza upstairs.jpg

I’ll let your imagination run wild about what goes on inside. According to “Stickboy” this LadyBoy bar had to close for a couple of days in March 2016 for some minor infringements.

Jane February 2003.

photo Jane old friend.jpg You may remember my friend Jane who I took to Samui in 1999, here she is back at Nana in 2003 after a stint working in Switzerland.

2001 at the Voodoo bar

photo DH at Nana Plaza.jpg This is where I met Phung who very quickly became my favourite Nana Plaza girl for the next 6 or 7 years. I preferred to call her Cleopatra which I think suited her better. 🙂

Here she is in

photo Bangkok June 06 006.jpg           photo Bangkok June 06 004.jpg           photo Bangkok June 06 015.jpg

The last I heard of Cleo she was living with a punter in Switzerland. I really thank her for the great times we spent together.

The usual suspects

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace From the left is Greg Clee who for some strange likes to call himself Jack Dawson, John aka Secrets, originally from Adelaide who has been living in Thailand for about 15 years & Sean Fenton from North Queensland. Greg lives in Pattaya and owns “Heaven Above” in Soi Diamond off Walking St. John lives in Soi 4 Nana and is a regular at the Plaza. Sean married a Thai girl from Kanchanaburi and has produced 2 or 3 kids with her.

Oh! I forgot to mention John aka “Secrets” has a habit of placing people on his black list, I have recently been put back on after a couple of years of being in favour, Greg is a long time resident on the list & I think Sean is on shaky ground.

This is Beer

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace This photo was from around 2000, however Beer (a great girl) has been well know in the Plaza for quite a few years.

John Martin aka Pothole & Apple 2003

 photo Gekko amp Apple Pie.jpg

John David Martin aka Pothole Bin Ladin, the Mouse of Markland. He took “Apple Pie” to Australia a couple of times before discovering he was simply one of 5 different punters from around the world she was collecting money from. A few years later she married one of the guys, a retired English police officer, produced a child then accompanied him to Buckingham Palace when he was awarded an MBE. Not bad for a bar girl from Nana Plaza.

Pothole in 2014

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace

He lives in the same building as I do in Pattaya and actually has this photo as the wallpaper on his phone. He really should be managing one of the Nana Plaza LadyBoy bars. 🙂

Nothing stays the same

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace Not so long ago Suckers was Lollipop and Bangkok Bunnies was Spellbound.

Before it was big Lollipop

My fabulous family in January 2011 (my favourite Nana Plaza photo)

Nana Plaza Bangkok pleasure palace What a great holiday we all had, starting at Nana Plaza in Bangkok then heading down the road to “Sin City” Pattaya. The little guy at the back with the glasses is my brother Warren, the 3 at the front are his beautiful daughters (my nieces) Laura & Elyssa & son Michael. The dark good looking German lad is Bjorn Luders, Michaels partner who sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer early in 2016. RIP Bjorn, we miss you buddy.

Long Table sky bar Asoke Bangkok

May 17, 2016 by David Herd

Great Bangkok bar

Long Table sky bar Asoke Bangkok Long Table sky bar Asoke Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke. Walk in the door and this is the fabulous view of Bangkok. Obviously not as high as many of the Bangkok sky bars but still offers an incredible view of this great city. Photo credit Asia Web Direct.

Use THIS LINK for a great rate of around $80 USD + tax for a 62 M2 serviced apartment.

Grab a seat beside the pool

Long Table sky bar Asoke Bangkok Happy hour is 5 pm to 7 pm, you get 2 for 1 drinks so two cold beers will only cost you B210.

 The Sheraton and Terminal 21.

Looking towards Sathon.

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

April 4, 2016 by David Herd

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels are very good value in this part of the city. I place these hotels in the under B1,700 category, which is under $50 USD.  The photo above is on Sukhumvit close to Soi 4 Nana.

Without a doubt AGODA is the best online Hotel booking site.

Lets check out the Dynasty Inn.

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

The Dynasty Inn is in Sukhumvit  Soi 4 Nana, a few meters from the infamous Nana Plaza. I can highly recommend this 2.5 star hotel because I have stayed there probably 50 times in the last 20 years. For lots of information regarding Nana Plaza  check out my blog.

Dynasty Grande

Bangkok budget hotelsJust around the corner at 21 Soi Sukhumvit 6, Sukhumvit Rd is the more upmarket Dynasty Grande, very good large rooms, I would rate it 3 to 3.5 stars. Rooms are around 2,000 Baht per night or $60. Bear in mind that is the same rate at Centre Point in Silom which is a much better hotel. The Dynasty however is a good choice for those who can’t resist the lure of Nana Plaza. If you use this link you can sometimes get a room for B2000.

View of Soi 11 from Mulligans

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Citadines hotel is a great location in Soi 11 Sukhumvit to stay in Bangkok, right in the middle of the action. Mulligans 24 hour Irish pub is on the ground floor.

Nana Plaza area is good for Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels

Bangkok Budget Sukhumvit Hotels On the ground floor are mostly open-air beer bars to choose from. Girls will try to tempt you in for a drink or a game of Jenga but not much really happens here, however it is where I prefer to drink and watch the passing parade.  The shows and the A Go Go Bars with naughty names like Lollipop,Pretty Lady and Red Lips are located on the first floor.  Girls here will step into your path and will try to drag you in for a look.

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing

December 25, 2015 by David Herd

Welcome to Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing is a hive of activity as you would expect, narrow lanes with thousands of people hunting for bargains.

Thien Fah Foundation

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing The Tien Fa foundation was formed in 1902, making it the oldest charitable society in Bangkok. The foundation provides free medical care to the indigent. The buildings surrounding the shrine actually house the hospital facilities.

Lighting candles at The Tien Fa foundation

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing The foundation is on Yaowarat Road just a short distance from the Chinatown gate in the circle.

  Very busy street Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing The Chinese community in Bangkok pre-dates the founding of the Thai capital in the city. Indeed, the land where the grand palace is today was originally a community of Chinese traders. When King Rama I decided to establish the capital on the site of the village of Bangkok, he asked the traders to move. They settled to the east of the new city, along the river. It may be hard to believe today, but the narrow Sampaeng Lane, which isn’t even big enough for a car, was once the Chinatown Bangkok main street.

Typical side-walk shop

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing The best way to see the area is to pick a starting point and wander around.

Roast Duck

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing Chinese food is my 2nd favourite cuisine after Japanese.

Shanghai Mansion

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing What could possibly go wrong?

Nice looking Tuk Tuk in Chinatown Bangkok

Chinatown Bangkok Very handy transport, however usually the drivers try to badger you into visiting a gem store etc so they can receive a kickback. Taxis are a far better option, cheaper and air conditioned.

Lots of toy shops in Chinatown

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing Prices are notably cheaper here than other parts of the city, of course haggling is expected. 🙂

Chinatown Bangkok For example check out these prices.

Ratchawong

Chinatown Bangkok shopping sightseeing The easy way to reach Chinatown is a B40 ferry ride, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up this road.

Ferry to Chinatown Bangkok

Chao Phraya River You can buy a ticket for B150 and travel up and down the river all day, very good value indeed.

Bangkok Weekend December 2015

December 23, 2015 by David Herd

The Big Mango Bangkok December 2015

Bangkok Weekend December 2015 Bangkok Weekend December 2015 was a two day break from Pattaya, we discovered some great new bars and restaurants. In particular the Red Sky Bar, Above 11 and the Pirate Chambre. Xmas decorations were everywhere, the photo above is at Central shopping mall at Chidlom.

Hooters is here

Hooters Soi 4

Hooters Soi 4 Bangkok          Hooters Bangkok          Bangkok Weekend December 2015

Due to open in Soi 4 Nana on December 23rd, sadly I believe it is destined to fail, wrong location, local “Cheap Charlies” will never pay extra for their drinks. They will sit opposite where the drinks are cheaper and the bar girls are available for extra activities.

Big Dogs Nana Plaza

Nana Plaza Diagonally across the road is the infamous Nana Plaza with dozens of beer bars s and Go Go bars. Here I am with my friend Hamish from Pattaya, I’ll bail out around 10 pm and Hamish will kick on to dawn. 🙂

Bangkok Weekend December 2015 CentralWorld is a shopping plaza and complex in Bangkok. It is the sixth largest shopping complex in the world. The complex, which includes a hotel and office tower, is owned by Central Pattana. The Red Sky Bar has an impressive 360-degree panoramic view from its 55th floor. Check out my photo blog here.

Soi 13 Sukhumvit Rd

Bangkok Weekend December 2015 In Bangkok the building never stops, another skyscraper is coming out of the ground on Sukhumvit between Soi 11 & 13. Here is my photo blog on Bangkok’s building boom.

Eggs Benedict at the JW Marriott

JW Marriott Bangkok Normally breakfast here is excellent, not so today. It took 40 minutes to arrive and was not up to the usual excellent Marriott standard, perhaps they were having an off day. Plus even after using my Griffin card which gives me a 20% discount, the price with a Latte was 387 Baht or $15 aud. Cheap by Australian standards but a little expensive for Thailand. I’m probably only complaining because the food quality was less than it normally is + I don’t like hash browns or cooked tomato. 🙂

River cruise to Chinatown

Chao Phraya River I took a river ferry to Chinatown for a B40 fare, a great way to see some of Bangkok’s most iconic buildings.
