Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia is only 40 minutes by fast boat. It seems  a little like Koh Samui 25 years ago, lots of backpackers & hippies.

Leaving Plantation Beach

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia The fare each way to Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia is $13 USD.

500 Horsepower

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia A very fast smooth ride.

Pommie backpackers

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia There were 4 or 5 English backpackers shrieking to each other over the engine noise, as you can see Steve is not too impressed. 🙂

Our frst glimpse of the island.

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia It was like travelling back in time. 🙂

Vagabonds

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia Vagabonds cafe I’m sure has seen it’s share of vagabonds, however this is the first visit by the famous FiveStarVagabond. 🙂 🙂 🙂

The Rising Sun

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia We settled here for a couple of cold beers and a Phad Thai, the place is run by 3 friendly Italians from Milano.

And here they are…..

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia Living the dream on Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia.

Hard at work

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia Well somebody has to do the heavy lifting. 🙂

Crystal clear water here.

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia As you would expect for a tropical island.

The essence of Koh Rong

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia This shot captures the essence of Koh Rong for me,  a lazy tropical island full of backpackers & hippies.

Talking about backpackers…..

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia Here is a perfect example, sadly I arrived 30 years too late. 🙂

Guess I’ll go fishing instead. 🙂

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia Crystal clear water & lots of fish big & small.

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia A nice way to explore the island would be to hire a log tail boat.

Life is very very casual here.

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia You can rent a room overlooking the beach for around $10 USD per night.

Use THIS LINK to book & get an excellent discount.

Back to Sihanoukville

Koh Rong Island Sihanoukville Cambodia We had a bigger boat which took 5 minutes longer.

Sadly this lovely coastal village is never going to be the same, just read THIS STORY.

Koh Samui busy main street

June 27, 2016 by David Herd

Central Festival

Koh Samui busy main street

Koh Samui busy main street

Koh Samui busy main street runs parallel to Chaweng Beach and has hundreds of shops, restaurants & pubs. Central Festival is a huge new shopping mall with all to usual outlets. On the ground floor in this photo is my favourite restaurant The Wine Connection.

Central Festival is in Koh Samui main street

Koh Samui busy main street

The shopping mall covers a huge area from Koh Samui main street to the back road beside the lake.

Koh Samui busy main street

Koh Samui busy main street

There is a food court, Starbucks, lots of restaurants, phone shops and all the fashion houses.

Solo

Koh Samui busy main street

Solo is one of the many popular bars on Koh Samui main street.

Lots of massage parlours.

Koh Samui busy main street

A one hour massage is around B300 however you can find them as low as B200 if you look around.

Massage on the beach at Baan Chaweng

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

Entrance to all the beach-side hotels is from the Koh Samui main street, here is where I usually stay at the Baan Chaweng. The location is perfect, for an excellent room rate just book through THIS LINK.

LadyBoy show

Koh Samui busy main street

Thailand is famous for it’s LadyBoy shows and Samui is no different. If that’s what you want to see then Starz is the place to go.

Lots of fresh seafood

Koh Samui busy main street

There are many restaurants offering fresh seafood all along Koh Samui main street.

Sports pubs are everywhere in Koh Samui main street

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

All these sports pubs have multiple screens showing sport from all over the world.

Samui map

Koh Samui busy main street

As you can see Chaweng Beach is only 15 minutes from the airport. Be careful when organising transport to & from your hotel, the majority of people will overcharge you. For instance our hotel told us a taxi would cost B200 for one person and B300 for two people, how ridiculous is that?

Navigo Samui is a new company offering a very fair price, B200 for a taxi, you can download their app here.

Samui airport

Koh Samui busy main street

I think Samui airport is the nicest airport I have ever flown to or from.

We took a 4 hour taxi ride around Koh Samui at a cost of B2000, it was a great way to explore the delights of this wonderful tropical island, we had a very nice lady driver, her name in Ying and her mobile is 09 1128 3867. Check out some of the great things to see, just follow THIS LINK.

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

June 26, 2016 by David Herd

Henry’s Africa

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Koh Samui excellent sports bars have increased quite a bit since I was there in 2007. Most of the beer bars etc have numerous screens showing sport from all over the world. The header for this post show my friend John Martin aka Pothole & I on our first night in Chaweng at Henry’s Africa which seems to be the best bar in town.

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Henry’s Africa is a huge bar with lot’s of girls, some pool tables and TV screens. As you can see Pothole is enjoying himself. 🙂

Henry’s Africa

Early in the evening they offer Chang beer at B79.

Best racks in town

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Or so they claim.

Opposite Henry’s

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

There are a couple of small bars struggling to attract customers because of the low number of tourists in June 2016.

Green Mango

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

This iconic bar nightclub is a little further along the street, it is arguably Chaweng’s most popular nightspot. It boasts of one of the largest dance floors on the  island, Green Mango is large, loud, & very busy from around 11 pm.

Green Mango

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

A great effect with the green and orange decorations.

Happy Bar

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

A little further around the corner from the Green Mango there are quite a few smaller bars.

Pothole finds another friend.

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Of course I’ll buy you a drink my dear. 🙂

Interesting bar

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

It was a little early and there were no customers, most of the young tourists in Samui don’t go out until around 11 pm. Geriatrics like us are living in a different time zone. 🙂

Hard Rock Cafe

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Keep walking back to the main street and you will find the Hard Rock.

 Bondi Aussie Bar & Grill

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Another sports bar where the Aussies gather for obvious reasons. I was rather put off by the B210 price for a Jack Daniels. So I went to the bar next door to watch the State of Origin played on June 22nd, which QLD won.

The bar next door.

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

A glass or red here was only B80.

The Islander

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

200 meters down the road from the Aussie bar is the Islander where I watched the AFL, next door is Legends, another well known sports bar.

Tropical Murphy’s Irish Pub

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

Quite a way up the road past Central Festival is Tropical Murphy’s another popular sports bar.

Tropical Murphy’s

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

A fairly normal layout, however a funny thing happened as I took this photo, initially the Thai barman was standing towards the front of the bar, but as soon as I raised my camera he ran like a rabbit to get out of the shot. I’m guessing he is hiding from somebody. 🙂

 VW sidewalk bar

Koh Samui excellent sports bars

There are lots of these great mobile bars where I live in Pattaya.

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

June 24, 2016 by David Herd

Big Buddha

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

Taxi ride around Koh Samui starting at the Big Buddha then circling clockwise around the island. It took about 4 hours and the taxi cost was B2000 or $57 usd. Our hotel was on Chaweng beach about 15 minutes drive from the big Buddha. Our very nice lady drivers name is Ying and her mobile is 09 1128 3867.

Beautiful bougainvillea

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

This beautiful flower reminds me of my home in Newport Beach Australia where I lived in the 80s, I had many beautiful bougainvilleas on the property.

Big Buddha & slightly smaller Buddha

My 115 kilos certainly puts me in the Buddha category. 🙂

Lamai Beach

Lamai beach bar & restaurant

Lamai is like a mini version of Chaweng, nice beach and lots of bars and restaurants.

Next stop Guan Yu Chinese shrine.

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

It quite a shock when you first see this fantastic huge statue, there are about 12 or more Chinese restaurants in the square. The Guan Yu shrine is the centre of the Chinese community on Samui island.

He looks rather fierce

He does not look like a happy camper at all. 🙂

 Elephants on Koh Samui

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

What magnificent beasts they are.

Here is a little guy with Mum.

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

I must admit I have mixed feelings about these beautiful animals being held captive, however that’s an argument for another day.

Here is a video of a dancing elephant

He certainly was a happy little jumbo.

Some banana for the little dancing jumbo

They really enjoy bananas, this is my friend John Martin aka Pothole feeding the little guy.

The popular waterfall was just a trickle.

Many people visit this location but sadly there was not much water flowing.

Time for a cool drink

A pleasant place to sit under the shade from the tall trees before continuing our journey.

Bophut beach

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

Bophut beach  was the last stop in our Taxi ride around Koh Samui road trip. Very close to a large new shopping mall called Fisherman’s village.

 Beach bar

Taxi ride around Koh Samui

Bophut is is near the Big Buddha & less than 10 minutes from the airport. The Ibis is a nice hotel opposite the beach, for an excellent room rate just book through THIS LINK.

More peaceful and quieter than Chaweng yet only 15 minutes away from the action.

This was really a good little cafe for lunch, the avocado & bacon baguette was perfect and the staff were really friendly.

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

June 24, 2016 by David Herd

Sensational Samui

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island is the busiest part of the island. However we were lucky in June 2016 the weather was beautiful and there were very few tourists so it was very peaceful indeed.

Baan Chaweng Hotel

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

I have stayed at this hotel 3 times before, the location is ideal, the rooms are good and the staff is friendly. I have noticed however the prices have certainly risen in the last 10 years. For an excellent rate just use THIS LINK to book.

Hotel pool

The hotel grounds are a little like a rain forest.

Massage on Chaweng Beach Koh Samui

In front of the hotel are four massage ladies, B300 for an hour.

Some nice scenery in front of our hotel.

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

A bright green bikini is always going to brighten up my day. 🙂

The Ark Bar

Chaweng Beach Koh Samui Island

The Ark Bar is a huge hotel that’s very popular with the younger crowd, there is a big pool party every Wednesday and Friday. Older dinosaurs like myself are better off 100 meters further on at the quieter Baan Chaweng.

For an excellent room rate at the Ark Bar just book through THIS LINK.

Hillside homes being built

What great views they will have overlooking Chaweng beach.

So many hotel choices on Chaweng Beach

The hotel choices are endless, everything from ultra modern to traditional bungalows.

I have to admit I am not a fan of heavily tattooed females, but to each his own I guess.

She looks better here

Much better because I can’t see her tattoos. 🙂

Chaweng beach is rather special to me, so many memories over the years. My first visit was 1998 followed by many over the following years including New Years Eve 1999.

Price list, what price list? I don’t see a price list. 🙂

Koh Larn Island is close to Pattaya

September 27, 2013 by David Herd

Here is my live webcam from my balcony overlooking Pattaya beach in Thailand.

Koh Larn Island

Koh Larn Island

Koh Larn Island is close to Pattaya, in fact it is only 35 minutes by ferry from Bali Hai Wharf at the end off  Walking St. Many people take the speedboats every morning from Pattaya beach, they cost between 1,500 and 2,500 Baht depending on the size of the boat.

Koh Larn Island

I guess Pattaya wanted to be like the Hollywood of Asia.

Thousands head for Koh Larn.

Koh Larn Island

Every morning thousands of Chinese tourists head for Koh Larn.

Dolphin seafood restaurant.

Koh Larn Island

As we get under way we pass the Dolphin seafood restaurant which doesn’t look too impressive in daylight but when lit up at night it is quite spectacular. One the right overlooking the bay is the Pattaya Hilton.

Royal Cliff Hotel.

Koh Larn Island

Looking to the left or Port to be more accurate we see the Royal Cliff Hotel, it opened in 1974 & in fact was where I stayed on my first visit to Pattaya in 1980. Look closely and you will see the elevator that takes you down to Cosy beach.

Behind the ferry is Royal Cliff hotel.

Koh Larn Island

Please always make sure you have a life jacket close by.

Koh Krok.

Koh Larn Island

Koh Krok is a small island about 8 km off Koh Larn, popular for diving and snorkelling.

Ferries go to both sides of the island, Tawaen beach is on the other side.

The crowd arrives.

B30 is great value for the 40 minute trip.

Tawaen Beach.

Koh Larn Island

Every morning on Pattaya beach thousand of tourists, mainly Chinese (some Indians) climb aboard at least one hundred speedboats and head for Koh Larn. There is one place on Koh Larn where they all gather like lemmings, Tawaen Beach. They really should change the name to China beach, they are all here crammed together like sardines, but I guess if you come from China you are used to crowds.

As you can see the water is so much nicer than Pattaya.

Boats of all shapes and sizes come to the island.

Fresh seafood at Tawaen beach.

Koh Larn Island

Lots of fresh seafood here, the restaurants are huge and packed with people from 11 am.

At 11 am everyone is hungry.

Koh Larn Island

Thousands of Chinese tourists visit every day. They travel by speedboat not by ferry.

This is the most crowded beach on Koh Larn Island.

 Sangwan beach

Koh Larn Island

Unless you are completely crazy and love being swallowed up by thousands of Chinese tourists, walk 5 minutes around the corner to a much quieter and more peaceful Sangwan beach.

Beautiful Sangwan beach Koh Larn Island.

Koh Larn Island

Now this is more my style, not so busy and close to the pier.

Lookout point at Sangwan beach.

Koh Larn Island

The colour of the water here reminds me of when I was in Cancun in 2001.

Koh Larn Island

The water here is so clear and clean unlike Pattaya beach only a short distance to the east.

Tai Yai beach Koh Larn Island.

Koh Larn Island

At the north of the island is a delightful little beach named Tai Yai. Almost deserted with beautiful clear water. Only one small Thai restaurant but very few people on the beach.

A very peaceful part of the island.

 Samae Beach

Koh Larn Island

The solar array looks like a weird spacecraft.   There is a very nice, large Resort located just steps from the beach called Xanadu. They have free shuttle service from Naban Pier for their guests. They also have a conference hall that can accommodate 200 people.
