Japan, five popular places to visit

Japan, five popular places to visit

Japan, five popular places to visit. Japan is a beautiful country, with one of the most ancient civilizations in the world. There are many Japanese customs that have endured for hundreds of years – you’ll love their commitment to politeness and their incredible hospitality. The depth of Japan’s history is reflected in the many breathtaking tourist attractions waiting to be discovered, both natural and man-made. Here are five of the top ones for you to explore yourself.

1. Mount Fuji

Japan, five popular places to visit

At 3,776 metres high, Mount Fuji is Japan’s highest mountain. It is an exquisitely-shaped volcano that has long been worshiped as a sacred natural monument and is a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike. It remains active, though its most recent eruption was in 1707, and it can even be seen from Tokyo and Yokohama when visibility is good. You can take the world-famous bullet train to enjoy views of this awe-inspiring landmark, and there are many attractions and resorts near the foot of the mountain to see it up close.

2. Snow monkeys

Japan, five popular places to visit

Image by Steven Diaz on Unsplash

You may have heard of the famous snow monkeys of Japan, which are actually Japanese macaques. There are numerous attractions in Jigokudani, Yamanouchi and Nagano based around these majestic animals. The Jigokudani Yaenkoen park is a particular favourite for visitors, where the primates can be observed in their natural habitat. It’s a great diversion if you are staying at one of the ski resorts of the Shiga Kogen region which are renowned for their beauty. Just make sure everyone in your party takes ski safety seriously – a surprising number of people still ski without helmets, for example, with helmet wearing rates in Germany falling as low as 40%!

3. Kyoto Temples

Japan, five popular places to visit

Image by David Emrich on Unsplash

There are more than 1,600 temples in Kyoto, so it can be quite challenging choosing which ones to visit in the city. To help you out, here are a few recommendations:

  • Nanzen-ji Temple – this is a sprawling Zen haven amid luscious green hills.

  • Tofuku-ji Temple – reputed to be one of the most beautiful of Kyoto’s temples, Tofuku-ji also has the advantage of not being overly crowded (unless you visit during the autumn).

  • Daitoku-ji Temple – more than just a temple, this is a whole world of temples, with some of the most exquisite Zen gardens you’ll find anywhere.
  • 4, The Japanese Alps
  • Japan, five popular places to visit
  • If you want to soak up some of Japan’s most breathtaking natural beauty, the Japanese Alps are the best place to go. There’s plenty of opportunity for hiking, skiing and enjoying a soak in some of the country’s most scenic locations. There are also some unique attractions to discover, like a ninja theme park and a wasabi farm. A journey around the region could also involve a trip to Matsumoto, Kamikochi, Nagano and Obuse.

5, Himeji Castle

Japan, five popular places to visit

Image by Sebastian Sammer on Unsplash

When it comes to places of historical significance in Japan, Himeji Castle ranks highly. It has an elegant, white appearance and is exquisitely preserved for tourist visits. It is a world heritage site, one of Japan’s 12 original castles, and has stood since the 1400s. As it survives today, the complex is over 400 years old, made up of over 80 buildings connected by various gates and winding paths. The castle almost personifies Japanese culture and is not to be missed.

The magic and wonder of Japan comes from over a thousand years of rich cultural heritage, and there is so much more beyond these five highlights for you to discover. If you are visiting, you will enjoy the absolute privilege of taking in this wonderful culture.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

June 19, 2018 by David Herd

A city between Tokyo & Kyoto

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan sits by the shore of Lake Biwa the largest lake in Japan. In previous blogs I have been a little harsh when writing about Hikone, however the Castle was interesting & I dined at two very good restaurants. Above is Castle Road which as you can guess leads to the famous Castle.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto JapanApparently the buildings along Castle road have been designed like town houses from the Edo Period with white walls.

It was a long walk to Starbucks

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Always worth the effort though. 🙂

My hotel to Starbucks

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I’m sure it took me longer than 31 minutes. 🙂 Hotel Sunroute Hikone is also only 4 minutes walk from the station, you can get a room for around $30 AUD if you book through THIS LINK.

I stopped for an ice cream on the way back to my hotel.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I tend to walk as much as possible to help my fitness, plus you see more of the local environment. Most days I was walking more than 10,000 steps.

Cute coffee shop

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Also there are lots more photo opportunities when you walk.

A monster supermarket

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan By far the biggest I have ever seen anywhere in the world.

The famous Castle

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Five castles in Japan are national treasures, this is one of them. Hikone Castle’s three storied castle keep is relatively small but displays a unique design that combines multiple different architecture styles. This is one reason why the castle keep has been designated a national treasure, the highest designation for cultural properties in Japan, held by only four other castle keeps, namely HimejijoMatsumotojoInuyamajo and Matsuejo.

The other four.

Hikone Castle Japanese National Treasure Hikone Castle is a 15 minute walk along the straight main road from Hikone Station.

Entry to the castle

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan After climbing about 800 steps the end is near. 🙂

The climb is worth it.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I have seen so many castles in Japan yet the attraction is still there for me.

The city from the castle.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan As you can see it’s a very small city.

Spare a thought for this guy

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan He is delivery goods to the shop, a long hard climb.

Take a boat ride on the moat.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Everywhere you go in Japan there is a photo opportunity.

Apprenti restaurant

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Very good food & delightful owners.

Duck Confit for dinner

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Very French, here is the recipe. Pour the melted fat over the duck (the duck pieces should be covered by fat) and place the confit in the oven. Cook the confit slowly at a very slow simmer — just an occasional bubble — until the duck is tender and can be easily pulled from the bone, 2-3 hours. Remove the confit from the oven.

Followed by desert of course.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I ate here two nights in a row. 🙂

Here I am with the owners of Apprenti restaurant.

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Masanori & his wife Hiromi are 2 delightful people who provide excellent French food & wine in their small French restaurant.

Uomaru

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan So many restaurants as such little time.

Busy chef at Omaru

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan Always great to watch the chef in action.

Avocado

Hikone Small City Near Kyoto Japan I’m always looking for this on the menu. 🙂

Excellent Food Hikone Japan

June 18, 2018 by David Herd

Not much to see other than the castle.

Excellent Food Hikone Japan

Excellent Food Hikone Japan

Excellent Food Hikone Japan, which was a real bonus because there is not much more to see or do there. Located on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa west of Tokyo. I’m not too sure why I decided to end my trip in Hikone even though I was badly in need of a rest after a very hectic two weeks.

Things actually turned out fine, I saw the castle & had dinner at two excellent restaurants. The one pictured above is a delightful French restaurant called Apprenti.

Very good food

Excellent Food Hikone Japan After eating Japanese food every night for 2 weeks I decided to go French. I’m so glad I did, the food was terrific & the owners Hiromi & Masanori are absolutely delightful people. The terrine was top class, the onion soup very good, as was my main course the Duck Confit was cooked to perfection. Put this lovely little restaurant on your bucket list.

Delicious onion soup.

Excellent Food Hikone Japan Quite different to what I expected, very smooth & creamy.

Duck confit was tender & tasty.

Excellent Food Hikone JapanBelow is a You Tube video on how to cook this excellent French dish.

Excellent Food Hikone Japan Ice cream & toffee to finish off a terrific meal. Apprenti is rated by TripAdvisor #68 of 551 Restaurants in Hikone.

The owners of Apprenti

Excellent Food Hikone JapanMasonari & his lovely wife Hiromi, they were so friendly & nice it made it a perfect dinner for me.

Uomaru was a busy noisy restaurant.

Excellent Food Hikone JapanGood food & atmosphere, very popular with the locals.

Avocado & sake to start proceedings.

Excellent Food Hikone Japan I had been looking for grilled avocado the whole trip & this was the closest I got to it.

So simple to make.

How to Grill an Avocado

A taste to die for. 🙂

The chicken was perfect as was the sake.

Excellent Food Hikone JapanThe best chicken I have ever taste is at a Japanese Yakitori restaurant. Both restaurants featured in this photo blog were only a few minutes walk from my hotel. Hotel Sunroute Hikone is also only 4 minutes walk from the station, you can get a room for around $30 AUD if you book through THIS LINK.

Unlike the hotel chains that make you wait until 3 pm to check in, they allowed me to check in at noon.

A good bar next door to Uomaru

Excellent Food Hikone Japan I enjoyed a couple of cold beers before dinner.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan

June 17, 2018 by David Herd

Was hardly worth a visit.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan left me a little disappointed. After Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo & Kanazawa Omicho fish market I expected more.

Rows of shops opposite each other.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan This is obviously the retail section, the wholesale warehouses are 5 or 6 blocks away. Several restaurants are among the shops, including a collection of small bars and restaurants.

Lots of varieties here.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo JapanLive, fresh & frozen are all available here at Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan.

Here is a big guy swimming around.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan Reminds me of my home on Australia’s Gold Coast during the 90s, I used to catch large mud crabs from my jetty.

Looks like octopus to me.

Nijo Seafood Market Sapporo Japan Nice & chewy for sure.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

June 16, 2018 by David Herd

You gotta love Yakitori & Sake

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo was an excellent typical, busy, noisy Japanese restaurant serving good food at a very reasonable price.

Small,busy & noisy.

Kushi Dori Yakitori SapporoThe only downside is customers are allowed to smoke in 90% of restaurants.

I went there two of the 4 nights I was in Sapporo.

Kushi Dori Yakitori SapporoEach time I had 5 or 6 skewers & 2 or 3 glasses of sake + an ice cold Asashi for only 1700 yen, or $20 AUD.

Beef tongue & asparagus wrapped in pork.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo Both were delicious as you can imagine. The sake was pretty good also.

The chicken is always hard to beat.

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo In some ways it reminds me of eating Dim Sum, lots of different tasty small portions.

Is that “Daddy Cool” waiting for a seat?

Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo Kushi Dori Yakitori Sapporo is always busy & popular.

Very close to my hotel.

The chefs love having their photo taken.

Kushi Dori Yakitori SapporoI have some friends in Thailand who selfie addicts also, lets just call them Hamish & BT.

Talking about happy chefs.

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

June 14, 2018 by David Herd

 Wide moats and sloping walls

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

Nagoya Castle completed 1612

Nagoya Castle completed 1612 but most of the buildings in the complex were burned down during the World War II air raids in 1945. Fortunately, however, three corner towers, three gates, and most of the paintings on the sliding doors and walls in the Hommaru Palace survived the fire.

Always lots of students visiting the castles.

Nagoya Castle completed 1612I’m guessing this may be the 12th castle I have visited in Japan. It puts into perspective life many hundreds of years ago.

Nagoya Castle completed 1612Coming through the gate you get a feeling of the history of this wonderful castle.

Here is my new friend. 🙂
