Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy with it’s cobblestone lanes and elegant buildings with beautiful views over the famous lake. The village is characterised by century-old buildings & interesting stone lanes & steps.

 Cobblestone steps

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Climbing all the Bellagio stairs is an excellent way to work up an appetite. 🙂

View from the top of the steps.

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Every time you turn around there is another great photo opportunity.

Narrow lanes

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy I used to wonder why so many European towns & villages had such narrow streets & lanes. Then a friend of mine Riny Doyle, from Breil Sur Roya in the south of France, explained it was simple to control the temperature. Narrow lanesw meant a much cooler enviroment, & lets face it in those ancient times there were no air conditioned shopping malls where you could het relief from the heat. 🙂

Delightful little cafes & restaurants

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Around every corner there is a little cafe or restaurant.

If you prefer a water view

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy Here is a perfecy spot to soak up the view of Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy. Perhaps if you hange around long enough you may see George Clooney wander in with his beautiful bride. 🙂

Sadly I don’t have the time.

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy

I don’t have the time to wait for George as I’m about to catch the car ferry to the other side of the lake.

Bit of a rust bucket

Beautiful Bellagio Lake Como Italy At least I don’t have far to travel.

Lets explore a little more before I leave.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg

May 24, 2016 by David Herd

Austrian Summer Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg rates up there with my favourite European memories. Breathtaking scenery, snow capped mountains and the wonderful food in Salzburg. This was certainly my best ever European trip which started in Lake Como then on to the French Riviera, a few days in the Cinque Terre  before heading for Milan,  Verona and Lake Garda.

I spent 10 days in a beautiful little French village north of Menton called Breil Sur Roya is known for trout fishing.

Hohensalzburg Castle

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg This fortress is over 900 years old and was originally built to guarantee the safety of the archbishops, while also serving as barracks and a prison.

Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg Salzburg has has three universities and a large population of students.

High fashion in Austrian Summer Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I’m rushing straight to the shops to buy a pair.

It’s nice to walk around clean city streets with no traffic.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg Salzburg is on the banks of the Salzach River, at the northern boundary of the Alps.….. The city acts as a hub for south-bound trains through the Alps into Italy.

Busy Salzburg Street

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg It’s always a pleasure to wander around parts of the city where there are no vehicles.

Nice square in Austrian Summer Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg Everybody is enjoying this perfect summer day.

Seafood in Salzburg.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg We are a long way from the ocean but the seafood looks fantastic.

Too much seafood is never enough

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg What a fabulous display, it looks as good as I have seen anywhere in the world.

Salzburg wedding

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg The blushing bride looks very happy indeed.

Hotel Bristol Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I stayed at this very nice hotel a few kms out of the city. Nice room and very good food in the restaurant.   Agoda rate the hotel Bristol at 9.2, this is very high indeed.

Dinner at my hotel

Austrian Summer Salzburg A schnitzel is compulsory in Austria. 🙂

OMG, the calories.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I’m guessing there may be over 2000 calories in this desert.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg My hotel was quite upmarket and in a great location, use THIS LINK for a very good discount.

Salzburg is the home of Mozart.

Austrian Summer Salzburg Born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a musician capable of playing multiple instruments who started playing in public at the age of 6. Over the years, Mozart aligned himself with a variety of European venues and patrons, composing hundreds of works that included sonatas, symphonies, masses, concertos and operas, marked by vivid emotion and sophisticated textures. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg.

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

August 18, 2015 by David Herd

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy is the largest Italian lake. The wealthy and the snobbish will always prefer Lake Como because that’s what they read about in the social pages and gossip columns, the experienced traveller however would most certainly choose Lake Garda as the more interesting and user friendly location.

Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Lake Garda is Italy’s largest and most visited lake. The lake is 51km long but only 17km wide at its widest point in the south. The distance around the lake is 158km. Picturesque villages, medieval castles, and lakeside promenades dot the shoreline.

Swimming at Lake Garda

Beautiful Lake Garda northern ItalyThe lake has numerous small islands and five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. Nearby to the south is Isola San Biagio, also known as the Isola dei Conigli(“Island of the Rabbits”). Both are offshore of San Felice del Benaco, on the west side. The three other main islands are Isola dell’Olivo, Isola di Sogno, and Isola di Trimelone, all farther north near the east side. The main tributary is the Sarca River, while the only outlet is the Mincio River.

Relaxing beside Lake Garda

Beautiful Lake Garda northern ItalyThere are many delightful cafes and restaurants around the lake where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine.

The surrounding countryside is magnificent.

The Castle of Sirmione on Lake Garda.

Sirmione castle Lake GardaThe Sirmione castle is the most significant example of the defensive structures on Lake Garda. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the village of Sirmione was a border town situated between the land owned by the Della Scala dynasty of Verona and the property of the lords of Milan. The original nucleus was delimited by a tall square wall with three towers, and was probably built on top of the remains of a Roman fortress.

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy

Lake Como northern Italy

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times, it’s a very popular tourist attraction with many artistic and cultural gems. It has many villas and palaces such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni, and Villa Carlotta.

Fabulous Lake Como home

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy

Lake Como weather is generally mild. It is known for its Mediterranean-like climate where sub-tropical plants can grow year-round, Average daily temperatures range from about 2 °C (36 °F) in January to 30 °C (86 °F) in July.

Bellagio on Lake Como northern Italy

Bellagio Lake Como

Bellagio is a wonderful upmarket village on Lake Como, certainly a place that attracts the wealthy. Bellagio & Lake Como are both beautiful and famous, however I do prefer the larger Lake Garda which is a couple of hours east. I found it more “user friendly” in so much as there were many more places you could actually access the lake itself. The wealthy and the snobbish will always pick Como because that’s what they read about in the fashion magazines and gossip columns, but the experienced traveller I believe would choose Lake Garda as the more interesting location.

My little road rocket

San Giacomo Church, Ossuccio

Dramatic scenery Lake Como northern Italy This Romanesque church is situated along the shore at Spurano, Ossuccio.  It was built between the 10th and 12th centuries. The sail bell tower on the outside wasn’t built until after the 14th century.  The double arched apse is typical of the local architecture and inside the church you can see visible traces of original frescoes.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

December 10, 2014 by David Herd

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre is the 5th and final village that are called in English “the five lands.” Then we have Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town’s vineyards.

Riomaggiore, one of the five villages at Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses. Riomaggiore’s main street is Via Colombo, where numerous restaurants, bars and shops can be found.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.

Boats are everywhere

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre

The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive.

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre ItalyManarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy seems to cling to the side of the cliff, it is the fourth village in the Cinque Terre and quite spectacular. I couldn’t believe how the people would sunbathe on the jagged rocks. 🙂

Manarola on the rocks

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola Cinque Terre may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo, dating from 1338. The local dialect is Manarolese, which is marginally different from the dialects in the nearby area. The name “Manarola” is probably dialectical evolution of the Latin, “magna rota”. In the Manarolese dialect this was changed to “magna roea” which means “large wheel”, in reference to the mill wheel in the town.

That concrete looks soooo comfortable. 🙂

Manarola’s primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned; references from Roman writings mention the high quality of the wine produced in the region. In recent years, Manarola and its neighbouring towns have become popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell’Amore, “Love’s Trail”) and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town. Manarola is one of the five villages. Mostly all of the houses are bright and colourful. Manarola was celebrated in paintings by Antonio Discovolo (1874-1956)

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre ItalyCorniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy is the third village between Vernazza and Manarola. Many people walk between the villages, lazy people like me catch the train. 🙂

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre’s villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Corniglia Cinque Terre

Documents dating from 1276-77 mention the existence of a castle. However, remains of the castle have yet to be discovered and the location of the castle grounds is unknown.

Wonderful old buildings in Corniglia.

The only ruins in Corniglia belong to Genoese fortifications, a stronghold on a cliff plunging into the sea, which dates back to approximately 1556.

Monterosso seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

December 8, 2014 by David Herd

Monterosso seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Monterosso seaside village Cinque Terre ItalyMonterosso seaside village Cinque Terre Italy is the first village of the Cinque Terre, or five lands as they say in English, the next one along the coast is Vernazza. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town. The two areas are divided by a single tunnel that caters to pedestrians and the very few cars in the town.

Monterosso

The beach at Monterosso runs along most of the coast line and is well used by tourists and locals. The beach is the only extensive sand beach in the Cinque Terre. Monterosso is a small town that in the summer months is overrun by tourists.

Pebbles on the beach

The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949. This is because Italian officials considered the village too large to be considered part of the historic trail.

This really does not look comfortable to me. 🙂

During World War II, many young men from the Cinque Terre fought for the resistance against the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini, and the subsequent Nazi German occupation of Italy.

Out of all the Cinque Terre villages this is the only one with a substantial beach.

Monterosso Cinque Terre railway station

In 1870, the Italian government built a railroad line into the city, which opened it up to the outside world. It is the main way in which people enter the city.

Tanned & gorgeous, shame about those rocks.
