Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd

November 17, 2018 by David Herd

Excellent low cost Italian food

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd is surrounded by Italian & German restaurants however it still remains one of the most popular restaurants in the street. TripAdvisor rating is #16 of 1,084 Restaurants in Pattaya.

Lets start with the Bruschetta.

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd The anchovies were my favourite followed the Parma ham.

Bruschetta is an antipasto from Italy consisting of grilled bread rubbed with garlic and topped with olive oil and salt. Variations may include toppings of tomato, vegetables, beans, cured meat, or cheese. Wikipedia

A good looking salad.

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd In fact you will find it hard to get a more colourful dish than this one. 🙂

Ain’t love grande?

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd Here we have a middle aged Italian gentleman with his much younger Thai girlfriend, as they say in the classics, you gotta Thailand. 🙂

As you would expect the pasta was excellent.

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd Right opposite is another favourite Italian restaurant Bella Italia. Their main branch is in 2nd road near Soi 6. For lots more information just follow THIS LINK.

The above Pasta alla Boscaiola, or “’Woodman’s Pasta”, is a classic Italian dish that typically combines mushrooms, pancetta, parmesan and cream to create an earthy, creamy sauce.

Lekerle is almost next door.

Great Pattaya German Restaurant

Lekerle is another one of many very good restaurants in the lively busy Soi, excellent German food. Just follow THIS LINK.

Sit inside or outside

Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd Personally I prefer to be inside with the aircon. 🙂 Thanks for visiting my Grottino Soi 33 Naklua Rd  photo blog.

Put iO on your list.

Italian Food Terminal 21 Pattaya

Italian Food Terminal 21 Pattaya

Italian Food Terminal 21 Pattaya can be found at IO Italian Osteria, take the long escalator from gate 2 to the top & the restaurant is on the right hand side towards the other end of the building.

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

August 18, 2015 by David Herd

Another Italian Gem.

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy is the largest Italian lake. The wealthy and the snobbish will always prefer Lake Como because that’s what they read about in the social pages and gossip columns, the experienced traveller however would most certainly choose Lake Garda as the more interesting and user friendly location.

Lake Garda northern Italy

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

Lake Garda is Italy’s largest and most visited lake. The lake is 51km long but only 17km wide at its widest point in the south. The distance around the lake is 158km. Picturesque villages, medieval castles, and lakeside promenades dot the shoreline.

Swimming at Lake Garda

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

The lake has numerous small islands and five main ones, the largest being Isola del Garda. Nearby to the south is Isola San Biagio, also known as the Isola dei Conigli (“Island of the Rabbits”). Both are offshore of San Felice del Benaco, on the west side. The three other main islands are Isola dell’Olivo, Isola di Sogno, and Isola di Trimelone, all farther north near the east side. The main tributary is the Sarca River, while the only outlet is the Mincio River.

Relaxing beside Lake Garda

There are many delightful cafes and restaurants around the lake where you can relax and enjoy the sunshine.

The Castle of Sirmione on Lake Garda.

Beautiful Lake Garda northern Italy

The Sirmione castle is the most significant example of the defensive structures on Lake Garda. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, the village of Sirmione was a border town situated between the land owned by the Della Scala dynasty of Verona and the property of the lords of Milan. The original nucleus was delimited by a tall square wall with three towers, and was probably built on top of the remains of a Roman fortress.

Airole beautiful Medieval Italian village

Airole beautiful Medieval Italian village has a quintessential main town square where everybody gathers to play chess, socialise and relax in the sunshine.

Early evening in Airole

Airole beautiful Medieval Italian village

One of my favourite Italian villages 14 km south of Breil and 14 km north of Ventimiglia on the coast. A beautiful Italian medieval village with a population of 461, it has a delightful town square where the locals meet to chat, play chess & enjoy a vino or an espresso.

The Roya river

On the road to Airole just south of Breil Sur Roya.   The Upper Roya Valley begins at the Col de Tende (1871 m) on the French-Italian border. It runs south about 35 km to Breil-sur-Roya and then another 8 km to where it crosses back into Italy. (The Lower Roya Valley flows into the Mediterranean at Ventimiglia.) TheUpper Roya Valley is a region of mountains and valleys, with swift rivers, thick forests, and villages with an Italian flavor.

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

Magnificent Cinque Terre

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy seems to cling to the side of the cliff, it is the fourth village in the Cinque Terre and quite spectacular. I couldn’t believe how the people would sunbathe on the jagged rocks. 🙂

Manarola on the rocks

Manarola seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Manarola Cinque Terre may be the oldest of the towns in the Cinque Terre, with the cornerstone of the church, San Lorenzo, dating from 1338. The local dialect is Manarolese, which is marginally different from the dialects in the nearby area. The name “Manarola” is probably dialectical evolution of the Latin, “magna rota”. In the Manarolese dialect this was changed to “magna roea” which means “large wheel”, in reference to the mill wheel in the town.

That concrete looks soooo comfortable. 🙂

Manarola’s primary industries have traditionally been fishing and wine-making. The local wine, called Sciacchetrà, is especially renowned; references from Roman writings mention the high quality of the wine produced in the region. In recent years, Manarola and its neighbouring towns have become popular tourist destinations, particularly in the summer months. Tourist attractions in the region include a famous walking trail between Manarola and Riomaggiore (called Via dell’Amore, “Love’s Trail”) and hiking trails in the hills and vineyards above the town. Manarola is one of the five villages. Mostly all of the houses are bright and colourful. Manarola was celebrated in paintings by Antonio Discovolo (1874-1956)

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

The fabulous Italian coast

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy is the third village between Vernazza and Manarola. Many people walk between the villages, lazy people like me catch the train. 🙂

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

Lunch in a peaceful courtyard

Corniglia seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre’s villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Documents dating from 1276-77 mention the existence of a castle. However, remains of the castle have yet to be discovered and the location of the castle grounds is unknown.

Wonderful old buildings in Corniglia.

The only ruins in Corniglia belong to Genoese fortifications, a stronghold on a cliff plunging into the sea, which dates back to approximately 1556.

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

December 7, 2014 by David Herd

The very best of Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy is the second village after Monterosso and before Corniglia. We chose to stay here because we could park the car close to the village. First records recognizing Vernazza as a fortified town date back to the year 1080. Referred to as an active maritime base of the Obertenghi, a family of Italian nobility, it was a likely point of departure for naval forces in defense of pirates.

Great food at Vernazza

In the 1800s, after a long period of stagnation, Vernazza returned to wine production, enlarging and creating new terraced hillsides. The result was a revitalization of Vernazza’s commerce. Also at this time, the construction of the Genova–La Spezia rail line began, putting an end to Vernazza’s long isolation. The population of Vernazza increased by 60% as a result. Meanwhile, the construction of La Spezia’s naval base also proved important to Vernazza in providing employment for many members of the community.

Vernazza at night

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by torrential rains, massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud and debris, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. The town was evacuated and remained in a continued state of emergency

Such a peaceful setting

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

With the arrival of the 20th century, Vernazza experienced a wave of emigration as working the land was viewed as dangerous and the culprit of disease, and the ability to further exploit agriculture diminished.

Sandstone buildings

In 1997, the Cinque Terre was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was born. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue to take place.

So many beautiful homes

Santa Margherita Italian tourist resort

Santa Margherita Ligure is a fair-sized town; large enough not to seem smothered by the tourism which has been an integral part of the town’s existence for decades. The harbor mainly caters for luxury yachts, but the town is also home to a small fishing fleet which can be seen unloading opposite the  morning fish market. There are wide ranges of hotels and restaurants, and many good day trips to make if you get tired of wandering along the laid back seafront.

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Magnificent Mediterranean home

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort, if you want to see how the rich & famous live in Europe just take a wonderful one hour walk from Santa Margherita. The homes are truly magnificent,  prepare yourself for a great experience when you arrive at the beautiful waterfront village of Portofino. The buildings, the boats, the restaurants, it’s all there. Just make sure you have your credit card and a wallet full of Euros.

Bella bella!

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Portofino  is an Italian fishing village, and upmarket resort famous for its picturesque harbour and historical association with celebrity visitors. It is a comune located in the province of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is crowded round its small harbor, is closely associated with Paraggi Beach, which is a few minutes up the coast. Other nearby beaches include Camogli, Chiavari, Lavagna, and Sestri Levante.

An amazing destination

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Just sitting in the morning sun, sing it for us Otis. 🙂

You can smell the money here.  😎

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

This is a fascinating place to visit, it is however very expensive as you can imagine.

The Portofino wealthy Italians arrive

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

I wonder if he can afford to buy everyone lunch? The truth is he can probably afford to buy the damn restaurant.

Lunch, nice but expensive.

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

If I remember correctly my seafood soup was 26 Euros.

King of the hill

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

The sheer wealth here is astonishing, I imagine most of these homes have been handed down through families for centuries. If walls could talk there would be some fascinating tales  to be told here. 😳

Same house different aspect

No matter which way you look at this home it is simply breathtaking, I wonder which boat is theirs? My money is on the red one.

This is the Club Mediterranean yacht.

Quite an amazing looking yacht.

Some people really struggle in life, others don’t.

Naturally there is a helicopter aboard.

And the beat goes on.

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Now this is what I call a great boat.

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Global inequality is certainly growing, in 2015 half the world’s wealth is in the hands of just 1% of the population.

Can you imagine the cost to fill the tank?

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Imagine this, you pull into the dock and say “fill it up please”, it would cost as much as an around the world air fare.

Big Daddy

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

No matter how big your boat is I guarantee someone around the corner someone has a bigger one.

On the hill is Hotel Splendido

Portofino wealthy tourist holiday resort

Hotel Splendido is rated the number one hotel in Portofino.
