Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour

April 18, 2017 by David Herd

Driving south from Gosford to Sydney.

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour were all waiting for me after my leasurely drive down the east coast from Surfers Paradise in QLD.

It was a great drive down from from Surfers Paradise  to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.

The historic Roseville Cinema

Sydney City Boats Beaches Harbour On the road between Hornsby & Sydney is The historic Roseville Cinema on the Pacific Highway, noted for its art deco facade. It became Traynor’s Picture Palace in 1919, but did not become a full-scale cinema until 1936. Roseville Cinema was renovated & updated to two screens in 1995.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney where on a sunny weekend thousands of people head for the pubs & restaurants as well as the famous beach.

Beach or the pool

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Decisions decisions, the answer is whatever you prefer. 🙂

The pool & surf club are an iconic landmark

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney What a fabulous setting, absolutely breathtaking. Located right beside the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club.

The main attraction is the beautiful beach.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney This is around 5pm so most of the crowd have gome home or to the pub.

Rock pool at northern end of Coogee Beach.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Late afternoon as the sun sinks in the west.

Copacabana or Coogee

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Seeing the beach volley ball always reminds me of Copacabana where I have been lucky enough to visit 8 times between 1999 & 2010.

This is what brings the crowds

 photo b30bc5ef-4740-408b-8740-b4fc2117f03c.jpg Magnificent Coogee Beach.

Wonderful views from these homes.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Can you imagine how much it would cost to live here?

The average Coogee home price is $2,627,000 for a house & $1,o39,500 for a condo. However these overlooking the ocean & beach would be double that.

Here are serviced apartments for rent.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Amazing location overlooking the beach, ideal for a long stay. Use THIS LINK for an excellent room rate.

Would you prefer to stay in a Dive?

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Don’t be fooled by the name, the location is fantastic overlooking Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney. Book the Dive Hotel through THIS LINK.

The older side of Coogee

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Many parts of Coogee are quite ancient as you can see, probably worth several million as a devlopement site here in Arden Street.

This one is certainly worth preserving.

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney Not sure if it will be kept as a private recidence or a guest house.

Overlooking Coogee Bay

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney As you can see Coogee is quite hilly.

Important safety message

Busy Chaotic Coogee Beach Sydney When on the beach in Australia make sure you always use sun blockout, wear a hat & swim between the flags.

In recent years I have had many skin cancers removed, doctors tell me the damge was done many years ago before I turned 16 years of age. In those days we NEVER wore hats or used sun protection.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

March 25, 2017 by David Herd

Sunday in Maroubra

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb located 10 klms south of the city was so busy on this beautiful sunny Sunday. Just finding a place to park the car was a major frustrating excercise.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Some of the expensive apartments overlooking the beach. In fact the average price of an apartment in Maroubra is around $850,000, however those in the photo would be more than double that. The average house price in the suburb is $1,840,000.

Here is what makes Maroubra famous

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Without a doubt Sydney’s beaches are among the best in the world. In my opinion the only country that can compare is Brazil, especially Florianopolis.

One of Sydney’s best surfing beaches.

photo 78c4c95e-9690-4c20-8bb0-43ea127655cb.jpg Everyone is waiting for a wave to ride.

The blue building is the surf club.

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb You can clearly see the lookout tower where the lifesavers keep a close eye on the swimmers.

A favourite photo

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb You have the camera man, the babe doing excercises, the Bra Boy heading for the surf & a couple just watching the action.  Bra Boys are a notorious surf gang, at their home beach Maroubra.

In December 2005 riots broke out between Muslum gangs from Sydneys Western suburbs & Eastern suburbs surfers. Follow THIS LINK for details. Contrary to popular opinion I personally was proud of the Aussie surfers that day.

That’s a huge zoom lens

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb No doubt tis guy is a serious photographer. 🙂

In recent years I have had many skin cancers removed, doctors tell me the damge was done many years ago before I turned 16 years of age. In those days we NEVER use sun protection.

A great family enviroment

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb What a place to grow up & to have fun on a magificent beach like Maroubra.

 Sidewalk cafes

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb Similar to every other Sydney beachside suburb sidewalk cafes abound.

Dive Hotel

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb A great view from this boutique hotel overlooking Coogee Beach, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount.

Location

Maroubra Sydney Beachside Suburb

As you can see Maroubra lies south of other fanous beaches such as Bondi & Coogee.

Sydney landmarks harbour bridge

Sydney Harbour Bridge

Sydney landmarks Sydney landmarks harbour bridge were on my agenda when I spent a couple of days in Sydney in 2005. This was my first stop on an exciting around the world trip to San Francisco, Miami, Rio de Janeiro for Carnival, north East coast of Brazil, Paris, Bangkok and Pattaya.

Sydney Landmarks

Sydney landmarks The magnificent Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge are two of the most recognisable structures in the world.

“Check out these top 28 Sydney Hotels With Perfect Harbour Views by HotelsCombined for great views of these iconic sights.”

ANZAC War Memorial in Hyde Park

Sydney landmarks Looking down from Centrepoint Tower at the Anzac memorial, lest we forget.

Centrpoint Tower a great Sydney Landmark

The Manly ferry can certainly also be regarded as a Sydney landmark, South Steyne is now a Floating Restaurant and Function Centre.

 Circular Quay

Sydney landmarks harbour bridge Circular Quay is a focal point for many Sydney celebrations throughout the year.

Sydney Opera House

Sydney landmarks harbour bridge Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the facility formally opened on 20 October 1973  after a gestation beginning with Utzon’s 1957 selection as winner of an international design competition. The NSW Government, led by Premier Joseph Cahill, authorised work to begin in 1958, with Utzon directing construction. The government’s decision to build Utzon’s design is often overshadowed by circumstances that followed, including cost and scheduling overruns as well as the architect’s ultimate resignation.

Though its name suggests a single venue, the project comprises multiple performance venues which together are among the busiest performing arts centres in the world — hosting over 1,500 performances each year attended by some 1.2 million people.

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

Bill Austin & Joan Baptiste

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney, in 2010 the reason for my visit was to show Joan & Bill, my friends from Wiltshire in the UK, my wonderful home town with the best harbour in the world.

This is not a travel blog just a personal photo collection from 2010.

Overnight at Port Macquarie

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney We stay at Port Macquarie at my brother’s home on the way to Sydney, there was a vintage car rally with some terrific examples.

On top of the world.

Food Friends Family Home Town SydneyYou may be wondering why I didn’t make the climb, well that can be easily narrowed down to one word, FEAR!

Warwick Robinson, David Herd & Michael Saleh.

Food Friends Family Home Town SydneyIt’s always good to catch up with old friends when I’m in Sydney.

Warwick loves his food

Food Friends Family Home Town Sydney

However it caught up with him in 2013, he underwent a triple heart bypass, so much for over indulgence. 🙂 Now here is quite a coincidence, his heart surgeon was Dr Alan Farnsworth, he was captain of our rugby team at Homebush High school in Sydney & I was vice captain. From memory he was dux of the school & I struggled to pass my intermediate, however we were both pretty good footballers.

While I’m on the nostalgia kick I fondly remember our football coach Peter Philpott, an Australian leg spinner & a terrific guy.

I took a sentimental journey to Auburn, the Sydney suburb I grew up in. The main st had not changed much except for the Vietnamese & Muslim establishments. My real shock came when I drove past our family home at 58 Kihilla Rd, it was now totally run down, a very heartbreaking sight for me.

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

June 24, 2015 by David Herd

Our journey starts here

Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry is one of the most famous trips in this great city. I remember a slogan from when I was a child, “7 miles from Sydney & 1000 miles from care”.  This was the slogan used by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company in 1940 to describe Manly “Australia’s Premier Seaside Resort”.

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

Sydney Circular Quay Manly Ferry

The best way to travel to Manly is take a ferry from Circular Quay which will give you a view of the world’s best harbour.

Gold Coast party house 1994

The parties never stopped

Gold Coast party house Gold Coast party house 1994, looking back as I often do, I can’t believe the fun we had at my beautiful Gold Coast home all through the 90s and beyond.

The fabulous photo shows two beautiful Argentinian girls and my late great friend AndreBuzek who lost his life in a Cuban car accident in the late 90s.

Please note, this is not part of my Travel Blog. It’s part of my personal history, check it out if you wish, also note this post contains nudity, so if you are bothered by naked humans please leave now.

Gold Coast party house What is it with dark skin girls named Sonia, are they all crazy? 🙂 I was having dinner at a restaurant in a Gold Coast apartment building, after a few drinks Sonya stripped down to her underwear, walked through the restaurant and dived in the pool. It certainly stopped traffic and caused a ripple of whispered conversation throughout the restaurant. 🙂

Old friends

Gold Coast party house  Lisa from Melbourne and Dennis “the hyena” Freeman.  My thanks to John Sinclair for the perfect nickname.

Helen Burke and Martin from Melbourne.

Gold Coast party house Helen and I were an item way back in 1982, we had a lot of fun together. We caught up again last year in October 2014 at her winery in Dromana in Victoria.

Flashback to 1982

Gold Coast party house Here we are in Hawaii in 1982 on the way home from America. Helen’s other boyfriend was a high roller from Melbourne, an Austrian called Willie. In the 2 months we were away we constantly played backgammon for money. When Helen lost she would settle the bet by paying for hotels and restaurants using Willie’s credit card. This was her revenge for Willie playing around with lots of other girls, I never found out what Willie’s revenge was. 🙂

Meet my new girlfriend Carolyn

Gold Coast party house Towards the end of 1994 Carolyn Clarke and I started going out together. She was and still is a terrific girl, we had a lot of fun in the following 12 months.

Gold Coast party house That’s tricky Vicky on the left and Amanda Hassel on the right. My caption for this shot has always been “guess which girl has a boyfriend”. 🙂

Coffs Harbour with Murphy.

Gold Coast party house Tony was the local weather man on channel 10, I remember an unkind viewer writing to the station and calling Tony a “prancing Pillock”, for those who are not sure what that means, check it out here. Tony was originally a Sydney disc jockey in the 60s, even after all these years he still has a great radio voice.

New Years Eve at Coffs Harbour

Great memories from the 90s.

Thanks for visiting my 90s nostalgia kick at my Gold Coast party house.

Gold Coast party house I finish the way I started with a stunning shot of this beautiful Argentinian Princess. Have a listen to my song that tells you how I felt in 1994, exactly how I feel today.

RIP Andre Buzek and Ray Brown.

Jim Thompson House Bangkok Museum

December 13, 2013 by David Herd

Jim Thompson House Bangkok Museum

Jim Thompson House Bangkok Museum

Jim Thompson House Bangkok Museum showing traditional Thai architecture combined with Western influences.   In 1967, Jim Thompson went on holiday with friends to the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. There he set out for a walk in the surrounding jungle but never returned. Thus began the Jim Thompson legend.

Jim Thompson House is a museum in Bangkok. It is a complex of various old Thai structures that the American businessman Jim Thompson collected in from all parts of Thailand in the 1950s and 60s.

Popular Thailand tourist destination.

Jim Thompson Bangkok Museum

Jim Thompson, an American businessman was perhaps ‘the best known foreigner in Bangkok, and possibly in Southeast Asia’. “In the twenty years before his ill-fated holiday in Malaysia, he had accomplished more than most men in a full life. He had built a major industry in a remote and little known country whose language he could not speak; he had become an authority on an art that, previously, he scarcely knew existed and had assembled a collection that attracted scholars from all over the world; he had built a home that was a work of art in itself and one of the landmarks of Bangkok; and, in the process of doing all this, he had become a sort of landmark himself, a personality so widely known in his adopted homeland that a letter addressed simply ‘Jim Thompson, Bangkok’ found its way to him in a city of three and a half million people.”

Living Room

Jim Thompson House Bangkok Museum

In 1958 this American businessman began what was to be the pinnacle of his architectural achievement, a new home to showcase his art collection. Formed from parts of six antique Thai houses, his home (completed in 1959) sits on a klong (canal) across from Bangkrua, where his weavers were then located. Most of the 19th-century houses were dismantled and moved from Ayutthaya, but the largest – a weaver’s house (now the living room) – came from Bangkuar.

Without a doubt AGODA is the best online Hotel booking site.

Silk Loom at Jim Thompson House.

Thailand tourist destinationWith his natural flair for design and colour, and driven by his single-minded dedication to reviving the craft, Thompson soon gained worldwide recognition for his success in rebuilding the silk industry in Thailand, for generating international demand for Thai silk and for contributing to the growth of the silk industry.

Elevated rooms.

Jim Thompson Bangkok Museum In the hot and humid tropical climate, the airy, open quality of a Thai house and the broad overhangs of its roof protect the interior from both sun and rain. Elevated houses facilitate the circulation of air and offered a more comfortable living space. It was cooler to live in and protected the home from the risk of floods in the monsoon season. It also offered protection from hostile wildlife. The open space beneath the house was versatile. It was used as a living area in the hot season, as storage for the season’s harvest, and as a place to keep livestock.

All visitors have a guide.

Jim Thompson House Bangkok MuseumIt’s such a popular Thailand tourist destination you are not allowed to walk around the property by yourself, you must wait for a guide to take you in groups.

Rice storage.

Jim Thompson House Bangkok MuseumThis separate room was where they stored the rice. It is such a unique property in the heart of Bangkok, you can see why it’s such a popular Thailand tourist destination.
