Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand

Fascinating Thai history

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand

Ayutthaya Historical Park ThailandAyutthaya Historical Park Thailand is about 80 kms north of Bangkok, however we were travelling from Pattaya so it was a 2.5 hour drive. The first thing we saw was this little dancing elephant.

I don’t like to see them trained like this.

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand They are treated cruelly in the training process which is very sad.

Enjoying the ride

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand This activity is fine, but I wish they would stop the cruel training.

These ruins are all over the city.

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand It seems 90% were destroyed by people from Myanmar.  It was capital of the Kingdom of Siam, and a prosperous international trading port, from 1350 until razed by the Burmese in 1767.

 My travelling companions

The local transport

Very impressive

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand I was surprised to see how many ruined temples there were.

Quite spectacular

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Certainly exceeded my expectations.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand We struck a beautiful day with a light breeze.

Very popular with tourists

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand

Buddhist temple in Ayutthaya Lots of tourists everywhere.

Lots of cameras here. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand I prefer my Canon Ixus however I also use my pone or some.

There is a lot to enjoy here.

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand

We were too lazy to go up the stairs.

Too may Buddhas are never enough. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand I do like the yellow scarves. ๐Ÿ™‚

Here we are at  Wat Phra Sri Sanphet

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the holiest temple on the site of the old Royal Palace in Thailand’s ancient capital of Ayutthaya until the city was completely destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. Wikipedia

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Not may tourists here.

Why did the elephant cross the road?

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Because anything the chicken can do he can do better. ๐Ÿ™‚

Finally lunch then back home.

Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand Col One Love Restaurant was a bit of a tourist trap, we didn’t do our research & took our drivers advice. (kickbacks would apply here) Food was ok but not good value.

Thanks for visiting my Ayutthaya Historical Park Thailand photo blog.

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site, this temple is often referred to as “Doi Suthep” although this is actually the name of the mountain where it’s located. Perched on top of the mountain 15 kms from the city.

You have a choice

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site

Climb the 300 steps to the top or take the tram. I compromised by taking the tram up & walking down. ๐Ÿ™‚

At peace among the trees

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site Our driver told us there were 2,200 temples in Chiang Mai province.

Lots of gold here.

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site Featuring a photo of the new King.

Lots of Thai people paying respect.

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site As well as Thai there seemed to be a lot of Chinese tourists.

 Lots of steps

Chiang Mai Province Sacred site

Lots of steps & it was a very hot day, like most days in Thailand. ๐Ÿ™‚

Background on Thailand: A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict.

Shame about the advertising.

Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand, even though we were only here 4 days we found some very good restaurants. I hope his photo blog takes away the guesswork for you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Aiku

Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand

Aiku was right beside our hotel above Starbucks, good Japanese food at a reasonable price.  Our hotel the Dusit Princess was a terrific hotel in the very best location in Chiang Mai, book through THIS LINK for a discounted room rate.

Out of 108 Japanese restaurants in Chiang Mai TripAdvisor rate Aiku number 5.

Whole Earth restaurant

Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand Nestled in a beautiful garden setting this turned out to be a nice surprise, food & service were excellent.

Mushroom soup was delicious

Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand Very filling & a great start to our meal.

Lamb shank

Interesting Food Chiang Mai Thailand Two of us ordered the lamb shank & were surprised when the bill showed a B200 price difference. Talking about he owner

You gotta love a pink elephant. ๐Ÿ™‚

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand Wat Ban Den is the most impressive I have ever seen. It was totally renovated in 1998 after the new Abbott Kru Ba Tuang raised huge amounts of money from people all over the country.

Work is still in progress

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand Everywhere you look there is another fabulous statue.

Totally spectacular

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand As I said before Wat Ban Den is the most impressive Thai Temple I have ever seen.

Absolutely brand new.

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand It’s a huge credit to Abbott Kru Ba Tuang & all the generous Buddhists who donated money to completely renovate the original structures as well as adding new.

Magnificent dragon

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand This would be a great location for an Asian version of “Game of Thrones.” ๐Ÿ™‚

Renovated in 1804 & 1998.

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand In  1804, Kruba Thueang Natsilo, a former abbot, also had the temple renovated. It became far more exquisite with Lanna-style architecture. The abbot intended to turn it into a beautiful place of worship with religious teachings. He hoped this would attract more people to the temple so that they would have a chance to learn about the religion.

Ring the bell folks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Remarkable Temple Chiang Mai Thailand The temple stands prominently on top of a small hill and can be easily seen from afar.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

July 19, 2017 by David Herd

Typical Bangkok street kitchen

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy over a 4 day period in July 2017. There are so many terrific places to eat in Bangkok, from 5 star hotels to street food & everything in between. The 3 of us guys were wondering if any Thai people actually eat a home. ๐Ÿ™‚

Au Bon Pain for breakfast

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy We start our day at Au Bon Pain in Silom or one of the many Starbucks in and around Silom Rd near Sala Daeng BTS station. The coffee & croissants are excellent, my favorite is the ham & cheese at Starbucks.

Here it is

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

A perfect start to the day, add a tall latte for a cost of B230 or $7 usd.

However if you are on a budget

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Foodland (open 24/7) has a breakfast “happy hour”, if you eat before 9.am an American breakfast including coffee & juice will only cost you B62 or $1.80 usd, priceless. ๐Ÿ™‚

Le Bouchen in Patpong

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

TripAdvisor rates Le Bouchen #176 of 9,969 restaurants in Bangkok. I think this is a gross exaggeration, don’t get me wrong, the couple of entrees we had were very good, however it’s an old world French restaurant that doesn’t deserve such a high rating. Dishes were Lasagna with lobster sauce & a Lobster bisque in pastry which was quite excellent.

 These were excellent

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy    Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Lasagna with lobster sauce & a Lobster bisque in pastry.

Uminoya Izakaya

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

I really enjoyed the food & wine at Uminoya.

Two excellent dishes

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Funny story of the day, the skewers were around B250 & the eel B180, or so I thought until the bill came. It was B2100 or $84 aud including 2 large glasses of red, I had made a small error, the eel was B1189 ++, when I ordered it I thought it seemed too cheap. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

China White 3rd floor Central World

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Really good low cost Chinese food.

I will definitely visit China White again.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy They served the best BBQ pork I have had for a long time.

Roast at The Commons

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

My brother Warren & I both agree the lunch โ€œspecialโ€ at โ€œRoastโ€ on the top floor is the best value we have ever had in Thailand, & in most other countries as well. There is a choice on entree, main course & desert for only B340 or $10 usd.

The busy kitchen at โ€œRoastโ€.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

We were both so impressed not just with the food, but the presentation, service & cleanliness of this reasonably hard to find top floor restaurant.

 Fresh vegetables in Patpong

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Thai people has taken street to an art form. Follow THIS LINK for more Thai street food.

Capri pizzas at Asiatique

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy This is definitely one of my favorite photos.

 Chicken skewers look good here.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy The Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy continues, there is temptation around every corner.

The Wine Connection

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy There are about 6 branches in Bangkok, this one is in Silom. Choose your wine from their well stocked cellar.

My favorite dish at Wine Connection

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Garlic prawns cooked exactly like I used to have them in Australia 40 years ago. ๐Ÿ™‚

Ice cream shop at Central World

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy We used our willpower & resisted the temptation until we got to Swensen’s at Siam Paragon. ๐Ÿ™‚ Can you believe TripAdvisor rate Swensen’s  #166 of 10,489 Places to Eat in Bangkok.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

The frenzy continued in Pattaya, here is Ray overwhelmed by the size of the schnitzel at Lekerle.

Well that’s all for now folks, farewell from EmQuartier

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Many thanks for visiting my Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy photo blog.

When Iโ€™m in Bangkok I like to stay in Sukhumvit Soi 11, here is an excellent budget hotel, if you USE THIS LINK you will get a great rate of around B1100 per night, or $30 USD.

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok

July 17, 2017 by David Herd

Up the lazy river

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok are one of the many interesting sights in this great city. Take the Sky Train to Saphan Taksin station or grab a taxi. The river ferries leave from just below the station.

Above is the free shuttle to Asiatique an excellent night market 10 minutes away. Lots of terrific restaurants, be careful if you want to take a taxi home from there, they will quote B400 for an B80 ride, the Bangkok taxi Mafia is in full operation here.

Sathorn Unique Tower

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok

Planned as a high-rise condominium complex, construction of the building was halted during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, when it was about 80 percent complete. It’s now the most prominent of Bangkok’s many derelict buildings, and has become a destination for urban explorers.

One of the many skyscrapers.

Boats Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok Bangkok is really going through a building boom, particularly along the mighty Chao Praya river.

One of the very tall buildings.

Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

July 15, 2017 by David Herd

The Commons Soi 55 Thonglor

Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct is off Soi 55 Sukhumvit in Thonglor. A wonder collection of eateries in an interesting “factory like” building.

Interesting name

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct One of the many terrific food outlets on the ground floor market area.

Fresh bread fro the bakery

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct We enjoyed some of this bread with lunch at “Roast”.

Soul food anyone?

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct There are some fabulous choices of interesting cuisines at this fabulous Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct.

Here is the best tip I can pass on to you.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

Both my brother Warren & I both agree the lunch “special” at “Roast” on the top floor is the best value we have ever had in Thailand, & in most other countries as well. There is a choice on entree, main course & desert for only B340 or $10 usd.

The set lunch Menu

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

The quality of the food & presentation is exceptional.

Smoked salmon & avocado

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct Warren chose this for his main course after his mixed leaf Caesar to begin.

Wonderful pasta.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

After my entree of potato chowder I had what may be one of the best pastas I have ever eaten.

We both had the Millefeuille for desert.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct And yes, it tasted just as goo as it looks. ๐Ÿ™‚

The busy kitchen at “Roast”.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct We were both so impressed not just with the food, but the presentation, service & cleanliness of this reasonably hard to find top floor restaurant.

The “Roast” bar

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

Do yourself a favor & put the Roast on your Bangkok bucket list. I’m not exaggerating how good this place is, TripAdvisor rates it #107 of 9,975 Restaurants in Bangkok.

Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct Craft beer

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct Craft beer bars are a little bit like the “selfie stick”, they are everywhere. I’m not really a fan of paying double the price for a beer & not knowing if I’m going to like it or not.

 The Plant House

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct The Commons is 90% food with a couple of exceptions like the Plant house, there is also a large children’s play room.

The Lobster Lab

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct This was my first choice for lunch before my brother found the “Roast”, however I will return. ๐Ÿ™‚

Source is the resident grocer.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct Just another one of the fabulous food outlets.

Meat & Bones

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct What a great name, Split logs piled in the open kitchen hint at the way in which food is prepared, although due to sizing constraints all meat is roasted off-site, at a house on Sukhumvit Soi 105.

I love this mural.

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct There is a lot to like about Bangkok’s Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct.

Liquor outlet at The Commons

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct They have covered most of the bases here. ๐Ÿ™‚

 Location

Bangkok's Artisan Cafe Restaurant precinct

Thonglor is quite an upmarket area of Bangkok. Follow THIS LINK for more on this area.

One One Hotel is 5 minutes walk  from the Commons.

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

July 2, 2017 by David Herd

Famous Restaurant district

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore is one of the cities best districts for food. Very popular after work meeting place for office workers, in fact this quaint little waterfront area is dwarfed by high rise office buildings.

Original buildings preserved

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

Boat Quay is the name of the road along the quay, which has been converted into a pedestrian mall. As early as 1822, Sir Stamford Raffles had already designated the area south of the river to be developed as a Chinese settlement. Boat Quay was completed in 1842 and the Chinese, mostly traders and laborers, settled there in large numbers. Conditions were squalid but Boat Quay flourished, rapidly exceeding in volume the trade on the north bank where the Europeans had their offices, houses and government buildings. WIKIPEDIA.

Established in the 19th century

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

Boat Quay is one of the early roads established in the 19th century when the Singapore River was the main port area of the colonial city.

Expats meeting after golf.

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

A very popular meeting place for expats, here is a group of friends dining at an Italian restaurant at Boat Quay.

Chili crab is my favorite

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

These monster mud crabs are imported from Sri Lanka are are delicious.  Rather expensive of course like most things in Singapore, however you can haggle over the price at Boat Quay.

Alive & kicking

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

You certainly can’t get any fresher than this. ๐Ÿ™‚

Victorian London Pub

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

Victorian London Pub is one of the very popular pubs in Boat Quay where you can meet friends for pre dinner drinks.

A very colorful character

Boat Quay Live Seafood Singapore

This guys certainly brightens up the place. ๐Ÿ™‚

Great view across the river

As the sun sets the city lights up.

Certainly should go on your bucket list if you are visiting this great city.

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

July 1, 2017 by David Herd

Surf & Turf

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant offers good food in a great seaside location on Wongamat beach. There’s a huge menu & my only complaint is the wine cost, like many other Pattaya restaurants they do not offer a glass of house wine for between B120 & B150. This oversight certainly costs them customers.

What a fabulous view

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

I prefer lunch over dinner for two reasons, the fabulous view & I find the wine far too expensive at night.

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

As you can see the beer prices are fine.

Let’s take a look at the food

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

My seafood pasta was very good indeed.

Scallop Mornay was excellent.

Just looking at this photo makes my mouth water. ๐Ÿ™‚

Succulent Oysters

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

As you can see, the food is beautifully presented.

Spanish Paella

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

One of the many interesting dishes on the extensive menu.

Chicken, onion rings, sweet corn , YUM!

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

By now you probably realize why this is a favorite Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant.

Spinach soup, what a great color.

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

Often a soup & a selection of entrees suits me better than a large main meal.

TripAdvisor rating

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant

TripAdvisor rate Surf & Turf 111 out of 870 restaurants in Pattaya. I’m a little surprised there are only 870, I really thought there were more. On another subject I have never been a fan of food served on wooden plates, I just wonder whether are are as hygienic as normal plates?

Two visitors from Australia

Excellent Beachside Pattaya Restaurant Ross Kennedy & Bryce Mathews enjoying their first visit to Pattaya.
