Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast

Fabulous Robina food court

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast is the largest and most expensive in QLD costing a whopping $160,000,000. Combining bars, cafes, restaurants along with 40 fresh food retailers. Spread over two levels it features eateries from local hospitality heavyweights such as the Honeyeater Kitchen from ex-Songbirds chef Trent Scarr, David Hayles’ Betty’s Burgers and James Brady’s Mr Pigs Bakehouse; alongside celebrity chef George Calombaris’ first Queensland restaurant, Jimmy Grants.

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast The whole place is quite spectacular, I will certainly visit again next time I’m on the coast.

Pure Meats

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast Butchers have come a long way since I grew up, I clearly remember them having sawdust on the floor. Here is an explanation from an old butcher explaining why;

When my Dad and I butchered, we used it as a safety enhancement and for ease of cleanup as was mentioned. No, we wouldn’t have meat on the floor, but it seemed as the floor would get slippery over time, and without sawdust, it was only a matter of time before someone would slip and it didn’t matter much what you had for footwear.

Often we wore cowboy boots as you basically stand for 8 to 14 hours at a time and it seemed easier on you, but as you can imagine they aren’t known for tractive abilities. If you are packing a 135# or so hind, you really want your feet to stay under you. We never would have worked without sawdust on the floor in the back, the front we left sawdust free but eventually it would make its way up there.

It is a pain though tracking sawdust all over the place, in your vehicle, etc.

Naturally the beef must be hung. 🙂

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast Why is meat hung you may well ask;

Meat hanging is a culinary process, used in beef ageing, that improves the flavor of meats by allowing the natural enzymes in the meat to break down the tissue through dry ageing. The process also allows the water in the meat to evaporate, thus concentrating the flavor.

Fish Lab by Wiliam Wu

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast Not only is this a good looking restaurant they also have a “drying room” next door. Follow THIS LINK for more about it.

The drying room

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast I have never seen anything like this before in a food court.

One of the many cafes

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast There is certainly lots of choices where to have a coffee here.

Too many coffee shops are never enough. 🙂

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast

Not too sure if they are all making a living, and I’m guessing the rents are astronomical.

Such a feeling of space.

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast The high ceilings and open plan gives a feeling of space.

Spectacular roof at Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast The architects have really done a great job here.

Lucky Luciano’s

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast I wonder if it’s a mafia hangout? 🙂

Woolworth’s for some serious shopping.

Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast As you can see Kitchens Robina Town Centre Gold Coast caters for everything.

Farewell from Robina

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

February 16, 2017 by David Herd

Happy hour happy street

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok was a street I had known about for such a long time but had never ventured there until now. It seemed every Bangkok restaurant review would recommend an establishment in this area & now I can understand why.

El Guacho

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I am a great fan of the Wine Connection chain of restaurants & Google told me there was one at 208 Thong Lo 8 Alley so my brother & I caught the Sky train to Thonglo station & walked for 20 minutes or so looking for the restaurant. What we in fact found at the address was El Gaucho, so I’m assuming either Google got it wrong or the information was simply out of date. 🙂

Here is what Googled showed.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok Wine Connection has morphed into El Gaucho.

So many restaurants & so little time.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I have decided on my next visit to Bangkok I will tear myself away from my beloved Soi 11 & stay in Thonglor.

Grand Centrepoint Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Right in the heart of Thonglor, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount. Sukhumvit 55 or Soi Thong Lo, is well known for its classy bars, boutique shops, fashionable clubs plus lots of hip restaurants. Its also acknowledged as the Siam Square of Bangkoks East side.

Lots of Japanese restaurants

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I was amazed by the number of Japanese restaurants in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, they were everywhere.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, The Dock

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok I am looking forward to having dinner at The Dock, they specialise in seafood & the menu looks excellent. Being an Aussie I love Sydney Rock Oysters as well as those big juicy ones from Tasmania. Kumamoto featured, I was there last October, & Brittany on the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, has over 2800 km of coastline, it provides nearly 60,000 tons of oysters each year, almost 50% of the total French oyster production.

This Soi 55 building caught my eye.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Prior to moving to Thailand from Australia in 2011 I lived on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise. On the beach there is a building called Focus which is the twin of this Soi 55 round building. 🙂

Focus in Surfers Paradise

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Compare the twins. 🙂

When I’m in Bangkok I like to stay in Sukhumvit Soi 11, here is an excellent budget hotel, if you USE THIS LINK you will get a great rate of around B1100 per night, or $30 USD.

Good food Wongamat Beach Pattaya

January 13, 2017 by David Herd

Rim Talay

Good food Wongamat Beach Pattaya Good food Wongamat Beach Pattaya, here are four restaurants that are worth visiting. The first one is Rim Talay located at the southern end of Wongamat, this is a great location for a cold beer on a hot day. Fresh prawns come straight out of huge tanks behind the restaurant.

Without a doubt the beach here is much cleaner than Pattaya.

You have the choice to sit inside or out.

Silver Lining

Good food Wongamat Beach Pattaya This rather spectacular restaurant is located in Zire Condominium right on the beach. At 9 pm the huge section of roof & walls slide out and cover the outdoor section of the restaurant.

A unique experience

Good food Wongamat Beach Pattaya Apart from the food it is worth going just to see the roof slide into place. 🙂

If there is a better place in Pattaya to watch the sunset I have not found it, apart from the Hilton of course which is exceptional as well.

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa

November 24, 2016 by David Herd

Omicho Seafood Market

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa, Omicho was a delight to visit, the noise, the atmosphere & the food. I enjoyed a terrific lunch with edible gold leaf sprinkled on my sashimi.

Fresh seafood packed on ice

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa

The only problem I found was finding somewhere to sit after you purchased some food.

Fresh crab

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa These look great but reasonably expensive at 4,500 Yen.

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa There were lots of species here I was not familar with.

Salmon roe is absolutely fantastic

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa I could almost eat it every day.

My hotel was in a perfect location just a short walk to the market, book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount.

So many choices

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa The market really does have an enormous variety of seafood.

Fresh fruit as well

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Being Japan the quality is very high indeed.

I decided to have lunch at one of the popular restaurants

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Very busy and excellent fresh sashimi.

Very crowded

Omicho Market Kanazawa Well it was Sunday lunch time so I guess that is one of the busiest times to be there.

Check this out

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa The sashimi came in three sizes, I chose the middle one, it was excellent.

How about the edible gold leaf?

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Kanazawa’s history with gold leaf began 400 years ago. Kyoto and Edo (modern-day Tokyo) used to make gold leaf, Kanazawa now is the only remaining production hub of the coveted craft.

Lets have a closer look

Sushi Seafood Market Kanazawa Naturally the leaf is used in jewellery, cosmetics etc as well as the edible product you see here.

Check out my YouTube video

The salmon roe is absolutely delicious.

Fresh oysters

photo Omicho market 21.jpg I really love fresh oysters but I decided they were a little too expensive and I have five more cities to visit. 🙂

A great selection of seafood

Omicho Fresh Food Market Kanazawa Omicho Market has been around for over 300 years, initially however it only supplied the privileged towns near the castle.  Finally in 1904, the market was opened to the public and ever since then has been one of the most popular places to shop in Kanazawa.

Sushizanmai

Omicho Fresh Food Market Kanazawa Sushizanmai is my favourite chain of Japanese restaurants with the best one at Tsujiki markets in Tokyo. I have also eaten at their branch in Osaka & Fukuoka.

The market is 10 minutes walk from my hotel

Hiroshima city food transport

November 22, 2016 by David Herd

Ōta River Hiroshima

Hiroshima city food transport Hiroshima city food transport, as you would expect the top four or five things to see in Hiroshima revolve around the shocking event on August 6th 1945. Sadly 140,000 people lost their lives when U.S. airmen unleashed the first atomic bomb on the unsuspecting Hiroshima civilians.

Three days later of course the repeated the horror at the beautiful city of Nagasaki.

Hiroshima Peace Clock Tower

One of many symbolic monuments within the Memorial Peace Park the clock tower marks the exact time of the explosion, 8.15 am.

The castle

 Hiroshima streetcars

Hiroshima city food transport Streetcars or trams are a great way to get around the city, however I prefer the bus. If you hold a JAL rail pass the bus is free, this paticular one called the loop bus leaves from in front of the Hotel Granvia beside Hiroshima station. There are two different routes which take you past all the Hiroshima attractions, you simply hop on & off as many times as you wish. For a super room rate with free WiFi just book through THIS LINK.

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle

November 19, 2016 by David Herd

Kumamoto Tram

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle, I was travelling on the Shinkansen from Hiroshima to Kagoshima & decided to spend 24 hours in Kumamoto to see the earthquake damage to the beautiful castle. I am very glad I stopped, firstly the damage was more than I expected, secondly Kumamoto turned out to be yet another very interesting Japanese city. The colourful efficient trams were a great way to move around the city.

Comfortable, cheap & efficient

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle My hotel the Toyoko Inn was in a terrific location but I couldn’t check in until 3 pm so I took a tram to the castle and walked around the perimeter.

First glimpse of the castle

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle My first reaction was there didn’t seem to be much damage, however I was totally wrong.

Not too much damage on this side

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle However the further around I went the worse the damage was.

The extent of the damage is starting to show

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle Naturally the castle is closed due to the damage and lots of work is being carried out.

Crumbling walls

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle Very few structures have survived the centuries since the castle’s construction in 1607. The original castle keep burnt down in 1877 just before the siege in in the Seinan Civil War.

Three years to repair wall

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle The city hopes to repair the main keep within three years, while the rest of the grounds are expected to require about 20 years to be fully repaired.

What a mess

Earthquake damages Kumamoto Castle Naturally as you would expect the castle grounds are closed to the public indefinitely until further notice. Knowing the nature of Japanese workmen they will ensure the repaired buildings and grounds will be close to perfect for the public to once again enjoy this great Japanese castle.

Yakitori washed down with hot sake.

Kagoshima restaurant village One of my favourite Japanese dishes.

Such a busy place

Kagoshima restaurant village The action never stops here. There really isn’t any English spoken however you can get by just pointing at the menu. 🙂

This nice guy spoke a little English

Kagoshima restaurant village Not only that he was in Thailand on holiday the previous week. He took great delight in telling me how much he enjoyed Soi 4 & Nana Plaza. 🙂

Lots of narrow little alleys

 photo Kagomma20Furusato20Yataimura2064.jpg

This village reminded me so much of “Piss Alley” in Shinjuku in Tokyo.

Wonderful smiling faces

Kagoshima restaurant village Some things in Japan you can be sure of, happy smiling faces, they love to be in a photograph, & people are just so nice & polite.

Hot sake coming up sir. 🙂

Kagoshima restaurant village

I realised after my first two glasses of sake the waitress was adding about 30% hot water, I thought they were tasting a little weak. Perhaps she did me a favour. 🙂

Great location & excellent hotel

Kagoshima City Aquarium Kinko Bay

My hotel was only 10 minutes walk to lots of restaurants & the ferry terminal, a great location and a great room rate if you book through THIS LINK.

A very busy village

Kagoshima restaurant village I didn’t see any other foreigners here, I was the only one.

The village is quite close to the railway station which is adjacent to the Ferris wheel.

Keeping the rain out

photo Kagomma20Furusato20Yataimura2024.jpg Rain is absolutely no problem here.

Happy customers

Kagoshima restaurant village You gotta love the Japanese people, as soon as they see a camera they want to be in the photo. 🙂

Here is a map of the village

Unagi no Sueyoshi

photo Unagi 8.jpg Fabulous food Kagoshima Japan, I have enjoyed eating in the local restaurants so much I had to do a photo blog focusing just on the food. Unagi is rated number 6 out of 2,921 in Kagoshima by TripAdvisor.

They specialize in eel

Fabulous food Kagoshima Japan I must say the food was fantastic, best eel I have ever tasted, washed down with a bottle of Kirin beer and some hot sake.

Miami Ave

The food & service was excellent, a typical noisey, happy, busy Japanese restaurant.

The 3 Samuri at Mekkemon

Fabulous food Kagoshima Japan I like this photo, it seems to capture the happiness, energy & enthusiasm of the chefs.

Happy faces at Kagomma Furusato Yataimura

Fabulous food Kagoshima Japan This is a whole different story & deserves it’s own blog. There are 25 lively and unique stalls and each has room for only 8 or nine customers, in fact it’s Kagoshima’s answer to Tokyo’s Piss Alley. 🙂

Mae Pim Thailand fabulous food

July 28, 2016 by David Herd

 Thailand beach resort fabulous food

Thailand beach resort fabulous food at Mae Pim

Thailand beach resort fabulous food at Mae Pim was high on our list when my brother & I took some Australian friends to this quiet little seaside village 90 minutes east of Pattaya. The 3 days & 4 nights had the feel of an eating odyssey centred mainly around the Tequila Sunrise bar & restaurant. There is an international team, a Swiss owner, Peter the German chef, Gary an Australian manager & some very nice Thai staff who run this popular establishment. We had lunch there 3 times, dinner once and cocktails every evening. Above is Swedish Skagen at Tequila Sunrise

Skagen is one of my favourite dishes, here is Jamie Oliver’s recipe.

Swedish smoked salmon

Thailand beach resort fabulous food My good friend Tony Murphy rated this beautiful salmon 10/10 at Tequila Sunrise.

Tony Murphy strikes a pose

Here is Murph doing his best to imitate a rather dour Swede as a salute to this fabulous salmon dish.

Jag älskar verkligen att äta rök lax
 Bratwurst at Tequila Sunrise

Thailand beach resort fabulous food Naturally with a German chef you would expect bratwurst to be on the menu. 🙂 However let’s not forget the mash potato which was excellent.

Chris Lockwood aka Dr Evil

Thailand beach resort fabulous food

Dr Evil & Nikki Murphy fell in love with the Pina Coladas at Tequila Sunrise. Chris has just completed a terrific South American trip, read his hilarious blog, just follow THIS LINK.

Here is a Pina Colada recipe.

A bunch of Aussies

Thailand beach resort fabulous food From the left we have Chris Lockwood, Warren Herd, Nikki Murphy and Tony Murphy.

Nikki snaps the Sea Bass.

Thailand beach resort fabulous food This was certainly worth a photo, another excellent dish at Tequila Sunrise.

Peter the talented chef at Tequila Sunrise

Thailand beach resort fabulous food Peter was a chef at the Hard Rock Hotel in Pattaya until he saw the light and moved to Mae Pim. Now nothing short of an atomic bomb will get him to move anywhere else. Originally from Hamburg in Germany, he returned home for 2 weeks in May 2016, after 33 years this was his only visit. After speaking with him I’m guessing it may be his last trip home. 🙂

Up to now it seems like Tequila Sunrise is the only place we ate at, however there were a couple of other places. Here is my Tequila Sunrise photo blog from February.

Thailand beach resort fabulous food at Xing Xing

Xing Xing Mae Pim One of the many Mae Pim seafood restaurants, lots of live product on offer at very reasonable prices. Above is their Prawn & Vermicelli which was absolutely delicious.

Rock Lobster at Xing Xing

Mae Pim Thailand fabulous food Rock Lobster at Xing Xing certainly lived up to the Mae Pim Thailand fabulous food category.

Seafood tanks at Xing Xing

Thailand beach resort fabulous food Lots of fresh seafood to choose here.

Lots of varieties

Thailand beach resort fabulous food I’m not even sure what this little beast is. 🙂

Curry crab & spring rolls Thailand beach resort fabulous food

Thailand beach resort fabulous food The crab was very good (B600) and the spring rolls were fantastic.

Book through THIS LINK for a great Pattaya hotel room rate.

 Next door to Tequila Sunrise

Thailand beach resort fabulous food Sadly I didn’t get the restaurant name, however it was right next door to Tequila Sunrise, food was very good as was the beautiful breeze coming off the gulf of Thailand. My brother Warren enjoyed his fried squid in yellow curry with fried rice.

Chris also enjoyed his spicy Tom Yum seafood soup

Thailand beach resort fabulous food

All the dishes here were good and the price very reasonable.

A short video on Mae Pim beach

 Wednesday special

Thailand beach resort fabulous food The Wednesday special at Tequila Sunrise is the enormous double schnitzel for only B159 which is a bargain. Here is my friend Larry Krausz who was born in Australia so I guess he was raised on schnitzels. 🙂

Larry & I were here in February 2016 and I couldn’t wait to return.

I rest my case

Thailand beach resort fabulous food What a monster, comes with French fries or mash potato.

Peter is the chef at Tequila Sunrise
