Forster Tuncurry north coast

March 24, 2017 by David Herd

Arriving at Tuncurry

Forster Tuncurry mid north coast NSW

Forster Tuncurry north coast NSW was my first stop on the way from Port Macquarie to Sydney in March 2017. A population of over 18,000 people it is a holiday destination for many Sydney people who are only a 4 hour drive away.

Over the bridge to Forster

The bridge is 631 metres long and was built around 1956, prior to that it was a half hour ferry trip between the two towns.

 View from Forster to Tuncurry

It is really a magnificent looking structure.

A fisherman & a pelican

There are so many places here you can go by boat.

A boating paradise.

 Talking about boats….

This one is almost identical to the boat I owned in Sydney in the 80s. One of my most interesting experiences occurred on NYE 1981 on Sydney Harbour, follow THIS LINK for the story of THE GREAT ESCAPE.

The main St in Forster

As you can see the main street is nothing to get excited about.

Nice little coffee shop

I’m happy as long as I find a good coffee shop with the daily newspaper. 🙂

If you have the time take a cruise

Unfortunately I was heading south to Gosford so I didn’t have time for a cruise.

 Not too many alternatives here.

You could have fun on this boat

No doubt it is the most memorable landmark in the area, and probably even the whole NSW coast.

Victor Harbor South Australia

Built in 1866

Victor Harbor South Australia

Victor Harbor South Australia

Victor Harbor South Australia is a city on the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, about 80 km south of Adelaide. The city is the largest population centre on the peninsula, with an economy based upon agriculture, fisheries and various industries. It is also a highly popular tourist destination, with the city’s population greatly expanded during the summer holidays.

One of the main activities

Victor Harbor South Australia

Let the games begin in Victor Harbor. I’m guessing this may well be the main sporting activity in this South Australian town. 🙂

Thinking back I wish I had taken the time to travel to Kangaroo Island. Oh well, perhaps I’ll return one day however I doubt it. One thing I know it’s not a place I would like to be in winter.

Overnight, many residents and tourists evacuated to Kingscote where they spent a sleepless night on the town’s oval and close to the jetty. Evacuees and residents have been stranded with many road closures still in place.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

December 10, 2014 by David Herd

Spectacular & beautiful

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy is the 5th and final village that are called in English “the five lands.” Then we have Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso. The village, dating from the early thirteenth century, is known for its historic character and its wine, produced by the town’s vineyards.

Riomaggiore, one of the five villages at Cinque Terre

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore is in the Riviera di Levante region and has shoreline on the Mediterranean’s Gulf of Genoa, with a small beach and a wharf framed by tower houses. Riomaggiore’s main street is Via Colombo, where numerous restaurants, bars and shops can be found.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre is the most southern village of the five Cinque Terre, all connected by trail. The water and mountainside have been declared national parks.

Also quite well known for the wine they produce in their own vineyards.

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.

Boats are everywhere

Riomaggiore Cinque Terre Italy

The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive.

Lots of little restaurants tucked away.

Corniglia seaside village Italy

December 9, 2014 by David Herd

The fabulous Italian coast

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy

Corniglia seaside village Italy is the third village between Vernazza and Manarola. Many people walk between the villages, lazy people like me catch the train. 🙂

Unlike the other localities of the Cinque Terre, Corniglia is not directly adjacent to the sea. Instead, it is on the top of a promontory about 100 metres high, surrounded on three sides by vineyards and terraces and the fourth side descends steeply to the sea. To reach Corniglia, it is necessary to climb the Lardarina, a long brick flight of steps composed of 33 flights with 382 steps or, otherwise follow a vehicular road that, from the station, leads to the village. Sometimes a small bus runs up and down here.

Lunch in a peaceful courtyard

Corniglia seaside village Italy

The village stretches along the main road, Fieschi Road, and the houses have one side facing this road and the other facing the sea. Corniglia is characterised by narrow roads and a terrace obtained in the rock from which all other four Cinque Terre’s villages, two on one side and two on the other, can be seen. The town planning structure presents also original characteristics compared to those of the other villages: the houses are lower set, and only more recently higher, similar to those of the villages of the hinterland.

Corniglia Cinque Terre Italy

Documents dating from 1276-77 mention the existence of a castle. However, remains of the castle have yet to be discovered and the location of the castle grounds is unknown.

Wonderful old buildings in Corniglia.

Monterosso seaside village Italy

December 8, 2014 by David Herd

Unique coastal resort

Monterosso seaside village Italy

Monterosso seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Monterosso seaside village Italy is the first village of the Cinque Terre, or five lands as they say in English, the next one along the coast is Vernazza. The town is divided into two distinct parts: the old town and the new town. The two areas are divided by a single tunnel that caters to pedestrians and the very few cars in the town.

Monterosso

Monterosso seaside village Italy
The beach at Monterosso runs along most of the coast line and is well used by tourists and locals. The beach is the only extensive sand beach in the Cinque Terre. Monterosso is a small town that in the summer months is overrun by tourists.

Pebbles on the beach

The village was briefly excluded from the Cinque Terre trail in 1948, but was re-introduced in mid-1949. This is because Italian officials considered the village too large to be considered part of the historic trail.

Vernazza seaside village Italy

December 7, 2014 by David Herd

The very best of Italy

Vernazza seaside village Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

Vernazza seaside village Italy is the second village after  Monterosso and before Corniglia. We chose to stay here because we could park the car close to the village. First records recognizing Vernazza as a fortified town date back to the year 1080. Referred to as an active maritime base of the Obertenghi, a family of Italian nobility, it was a likely point of departure for naval forces in defense of pirates.

Great food at Vernazza

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

In the 1800s, after a long period of stagnation, Vernazza returned to wine production, enlarging and creating new terraced hillsides. The result was a revitalization of Vernazza’s commerce. Also at this time, the construction of the Genova–La Spezia rail line began, putting an end to Vernazza’s long isolation. The population of Vernazza increased by 60% as a result. Meanwhile, the construction of La Spezia’s naval base also proved important to Vernazza in providing employment for many members of the community.

Vernazza seaside village Italy

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

On 25 October 2011, Vernazza was struck by torrential rains, massive flooding, and mudslides that left the town buried in over 4 metres of mud and debris, causing over 100 million euro worth of damage. The town was evacuated and remained in a continued state of emergency

Such a peaceful setting

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

With the arrival of the 20th century, Vernazza experienced a wave of emigration as working the land was viewed as dangerous and the culprit of disease, and the ability to further exploit agriculture diminished.

Sandstone buildings

Vernazza seaside village Cinque Terre Italy

In 1997, the Cinque Terre was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 1999 the National Park of the Cinque Terre was born. Today the main source of revenue for Vernazza is tourism. However, as a testimony to the strength of centuries-old tradition, fishing, wine and olive oil production still continue to take place.

Port Macquarie coastal village

August 5, 2014 by David Herd

Port Macquarie coastal village originally was a penal colony, these days many people retire in Port Macquarie on the NSW coast (4 hours north of Sydney), because of the temperate climate, good fishing & boating and nice beaches. I think it is the pick of the NSW coastal towns.

At the end of this post you will see how one of my distant relatives Helen Gillies arrived in Port Macquarie in 1833 after being convicted for stealing in Glasgow and shipped to Australia. Helen was my grandfather’s grandmother 🙂

Port Macquarie is famous for fresh seafood

Beautiful fresh prawns & delicious oysters, in fact my favourite lunch in Port is prawns & avocado on freshly baked bread with a dozen oysters natural to begin.

The Hastings River

Port Macquarie coastal village

Hastings River is also the name of a small, developing wine region. The main clusters of vineyards are located in Port Macquarie and Wauchope.

The region was first planted with vines in the 1860s but recent history of the area has been pioneered by the Cassegrain family with Verdelho

Hastings River’s cellar door facilities, music events, regional restaurants, coastal attractions and great climate are serving to build interest in the local wine industry.

Warren has lived & worked in Port Macquarie for over 20 years, he & his wife Kerry raised four great children who are now having children of their own. The Herd family has grown incredibly over the last 50 years, I have put a lot of the family history in a post called Following the Herd. My uncle Allan Herd also lived in Port Macquarie for many years, he passed away at the age of 95 in July 2012, his story as a soldier in WW2 is the most dramatic event in our family history, it’s a tale worth reading.

My lovely niece Laura & Jordan Millar.

Here is a classic council sign in Port Macquarie on the NSW coast. A friend of mine who works for Trowbridge council in Wiltshire in the U.K. arranged for a couple of these to be erected in Trowbridge, after a couple of months and numerous complaints from the public they took them down.

And I thought the Pommies had a sense of humour.

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

December 18, 2013 by David Herd

Low tide at St Ives

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town voted the best by the British Travel Awards in 2010 and 2011.  A civil parish and port in Cornwall. The town lies north of Penzance and west of Camborne on the coast of the Celtic Sea. In former times it was commercially dependent on fishing.

Huge seagulls

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

These are the biggest seagulls I have ever seen, twice the size of their Australian cousins. If you are eating fish & chips on the beach make sure you have a loaded shotgun beside you.  😆

If you are staying at a hotel or guest house you will probably have to leave your car on the outskirts of town. The streets are so narrow you can barely get a small car through them.

St Ives really is a hidden gem, put it on your bucket list.

St-Ives Cornwall seaside town.

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

In former times St Ives was commercially dependent on fishing. The decline in fishing, however, caused a shift in commercial emphasis and the town is now primarily a popular holiday resort, notably achieving the award ‘Best UK Seaside Town’ from the British Travel Awards in both 2010 and 2011. St Ives was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1639. St Ives has become renowned for its number of artists.

St Ives was named best seaside town of 2007 by the Guardian newspaper.

The beach at St Ives seaside town

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

St Ives is situated on the shore of St Ives Bay, its harbour sheltered by Smeaton’s pier. Close to the harbour, its streets are narrow and uneven while its wider streets are in the newer parts of the town on rising ground. The town has four beaches: Porthmeor a surfing beach, Porthgwidden a small sandy cove, Harbour by the working port and Porthminster which has almost half a mile of sand.

Lots of restaurants in St Ives.

The town has an Oceanic climate and has some of the mildest winters and warmest summers in Britain and Northern Europe.

The Hub

St-Ives Cornwall Seaside Town

It is a very popular tourist resort in the summer, and benefits from an average of 1700–2000 hours of sunshine a year.

Camogli Italian tourist resort

November 17, 2013 by David Herd

A wonderful village by the sea.

Camogli Italian tourist resort

Camogli Italian tourist resort

Camogli Italian tourist resort located on the west side of the peninsula of Portofino, on the Golfo Paradiso at the Riviera di Levante, in the province of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. Wikipedia

Part of the Italian Riviera.

Camogli Italian tourist resort

Camogli was in the late Middle Ages a considerable seaport. In its heyday, the fleet consisted of hundreds of Camogli’s Tall Ships. It was called the “city of a thousand white sails.” 1798, the city has a large contingent of Napoleon’s fleet, which was beaten in Egyptian waters of the Nile by Admiral Nelson. This prestigious naval college founded in 1874, Cristoforo Colombo is the nautical tradition as well as a retirement home for masters.

In 1880 the city had (in a population of 12,000) 500 patented ship captains. The former fishing village, which now lives mainly from tourism, is known for its colourful houses that line behind the beach. The colours once helped the fishermen to find their way back to port.

I really thought this place was a hidden gem, lots of restaurants overlooking the sea, and hundreds of hotels to choose from. You can actually walk to Portofino which is just south of Camogli, or if you are lazy like I am take the ferry.

Where is the sand?

Of course the sand does not exist along this fabulous Italian coast.

Portuguese fishing village

Cascais Portuguese fishing village

Portuguese  fishing village Cascais is a coastal town in Cascais Municipality in Portugal, 30 kilometres (19 miles) west of Lisbon, with about 35,000 residents. It is a cosmopolitan suburb of the Portuguese capital and one of the richest municipalities in Portugal. The former fishing village gained fame as a resort for Portugal’s royal family in the late 19th century and early 20th century. Nowadays, it is a popular vacation spot for both Portuguese and foreign tourists.

The town is small enough to explore entirely by foot, up the hill beyond the town centre there are numerous narrow cobbled streets to explore with interesting architecture, plants and animals to see.

The  Citadel

The Citadel is actually a prolongation of the Nossa Senhora da Luz Fortress and is the only part that can actually be visited today. It housed the Soldiers’ Hospital, considered the most well equipped and competent infirmary in the whole Portuguese military history.
