Up the lazy river

Buildings Chao Phraya River

Buildings Chao Phraya River Bangkok are one of the many interesting sights in this great city. Take the Sky Train to Saphan Taksin station or grab a taxi. The river ferries leave from just below the station.

Above is the free shuttle to Asiatique an excellent night market 10 minutes away. Lots of terrific restaurants, be careful if you want to take a taxi home from there, they will quote B400 for an B80 ride, the Bangkok taxi Mafia is in full operation here.

Sathorn Unique Tower

Planned as a high-rise condominium complex, construction of the building was halted during the 1997 Asian financial crisis, when it was about 80 percent complete. It’s now the most prominent of Bangkok’s many derelict buildings, and has become a destination for urban explorers.

Central Marina Shopping Mall

Renovated Shopping Mall

Central Marina Shopping Mall

Central Marina Shopping Mall is only five minutes from where I live so I am often there enjoying Starbucks or the many good restaurants.

Sichuan Restaurant

This is one of the many exotic restaurants at Central Marina Pattaya Shopping Mall.

Delicious food

Reasonably priced & a little bit spicy as you can imagine. 🙂

The biggest problem is deciding where to eat, there are just so many choices.

I really like the hamburgers here.

Lots of choices between Thai or imported beef & totally delicious. 🙂

Thai cheeseburger

The cheeseburger is usually my choice, I really need to try some of the other varieties.

Strike up the band

Most nights this band seems to be entertaining the customers.

Mango & sticky rice

Always after a hamburger I must have this magnificent Thai delicacy.

Fancy food trucks

Mobile pop up restaurants add some colour & movement to the Marina forecourt.

Welcome sign is like a lighthouse.

I often wonder why they call the mall Central Marina as it’s 500 meters from Pattaya Bay. 🙂

MK Restaurant

Without a doubt MK is one of best Pattaya restaurants for value with a great selection of food.

Dim Sum

The dim sum is my favorite closely followed by their roast duck & BBQ pork. My bill is usually under B400 or $15 aud. Take a look at their menu here.

Huge chandelier

Quite spectacular hanging from the high ceiling in the front section of the mall.

Sushi Hina

One of the many Japanese restaurants at the Central Marina Shopping Mall, along with Korean & Chinese.

There is even a Playboy Cafe

One of the first in a chain being opened in Thailand. Didn’t last too long though, closed it’s doors around August 2018.

Fuji returns.

It has not operated there since before the major renovations took place in 2017. Check it out on THIS LINK.

Low cost food everywhere.

Lots of low cost food at Central Marina Shopping Mall.

Another good Japanese restaurant.

Yayoi serves an excellent Sukiyaki with either beef or pork for around B320 or $14b AUD.

Japanese is certainly the dominant cuisine at Central Marina Pattaya Shopping Mall.

Another favorite has re-opened at Central Marina

At Hachiban Ramen, the Gyoza & Teriyaki chicken are to die for, only 153 Baht for the two, priceless. There is another branch on the ground floor of Tukcom at the rear & one at Central Festival.

Sadly due to Covid-19 Hachiban Ramen closed July 2021. Glad to say it has re-openned on the ground floor adjacent to MK in January 2022.

Great food & lots of staff.

I regularly dine here at least twice a week.

Next door is Swensens

This is a real trap for me, after Hachiban I usually have a scoop of macadamia ice cream with caramel flavouring. 🙂

Sadly due to Covid-19 Swensen’s has closed July 2021.

As you can imaging it sometimes gets a little noisy. 🙂

The bird is the word….

Lots of things to entertain kids at Central Marina Pattaya Shopping Mall.

Skechers have arrived October 2018.

I have 6 pairs of these fabulous shoes.

I couldn’t resist the opening specials.

So I bought 3 pairs for B3,750 or $160 AUD. In reality this relates to 3 pair for the price of one.

Right opposite is Honey 2 massage.

So just send the missus shopping while you enjoy a soapy massage. 🙂 🙂 🙂

That’s if you don’t object to 90% of customers being from India. 🙂

That’s why I always recommend my friends go to the one opposite the Atlantic bar.

Spectacular Bangkok Sky Bars, I really doubt if any city in the world has as many amazing rooftop bar/restaurants than Bangkok. This photo is from the 56th floor of the Red Sky Bar located above CentralWorld.

Happy hour at Red Sky Bar

Generally as you can imagine Sky Bars are expensive venues, however between 5 & 7 pm buy one get one free is a good deal, for instance a Jack Daniels or a beer is B360 or $10.50 usd, so getting 2 for 1 is a good value.

I rate Red Sky Bar 5 stars.

Great view of Bangkok.

At the Hotel Indigo Bangkok 81 Wireless Road, Pathumwan, on the 25^th and 26^th Floor.

I give Char a 4 star rating.

The amazing Bangkok skyline.

Open at 6 pm in time for the sunset.

Char Bar walking distance to CentralWorld.

An easy walk from Char Bar to Red Sky Bar.

I rate Char Bar 4 stars.

Long Table sky bar

Long Table sky bar Bangkok is located on the 25th floor of the Colomn serviced apartments in Soi 16 Asoke. Obviously not as high as many of the Bangkok sky bars but still offers an incredible view of this great city.

I rate Longtable 4 stars.

Cielo Sky Bar & Restaurant

Another spectacular venue to add to the many other “must do” places to visit in this great city. Located between Sukhumvit 69 & 71 only five minutes walk from Phra Khanong BTS station.

A small beautifully designed intimate restaurant

The Cielo Sky Bar & Restaurant menu caters to a variety of budgets and offers a small selection of well known international dishes. Try the simple Spaghetti Carbonara (250 Baht), the fancy Roasted Duck with Fresh Orange Thyme Sauce (320 Baht), or for those wanting to splash out: the grilled Australian ribeye steak (850 Baht).

Sirocco Restaurant & Bar

Sirocco Sky Bar State Tower Bangkok is one of the best rooftop restaurants bars in the world. In fact I really doubt if any city in the world has more roof top bars than Bangkok. I would certainly like to know if there is any place more spectacular than Sirocco which is located of the 64th floor of the State Tower building in Bangkok.

I rate Sirocco 5 stars.

Top floor Lebua Hotel

Great location close to the Sky Train and the river ferries. One of the nicest ways to spend an hour in Bangkok is cruising along the mighty Chao Phraya river. The river ferry takes you up the lazy river for only B150 for the whole day. It is a great way to see many of Bangkok’s wonderful landmarks. A ticket to Chinatown is only B40, get off at pier number 5 at Ratchawong and walk 10 minutes up the road.

Sirocco to Red Sky

Via Roof 33 & Char Bar.

Roof 38 Bar Sathorn Rd

Located on the 38th floor of the Mode Sathorn Hotel which is right next door to Surasak sky train. A nice relaxing atmosphere and the drinks are rather expensive as you would expect.

Rawiwan (Lucknam) Thaikam @ Roof 38

The lovely lady is the Roof manager, very friendly with a beautiful smile. She has worked at some other bangkok Roof bars and I think the 38 bars is very lucky to have her on the staff.

Brewski Sky Bar Radisson Blu Bangkok

Brewski Sky Bar Radisson Blu Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road near Soi 25 claim to be the only rooftop craft beer bar in Bangkok. I’m not into craft beers however an Asahi bottle was reasonably prices at B160, or $4.50 USD.

Joergen Ulitzka & Pothole aka John Martin were very impressed with the view.

Octave Rooftop Lounge Marriott Bangkok

Sukhumvit is one of Bangkok’s busiest roads so catch the sky train to Thong Lo station and walk 5 minutes to 57 Sukhumvit Rd.

I rate Octave 4 stars.

The drinks are quite expensive at most roof top bars however here you get two for one cocktails at happy hour before 6pm.

For an excellent room rate here at the Marriott just use this link to book and you will be very happy with the result.

Rooftop Restaurant Bar Sofitel Bangkok

On the left is the Westin Hotel which is next door to Terminal 21, & on the right is the Sheraton.

I rate Sofitel 4.5 stars.

Pirate Chambre Excellent Bangkok Restaurant at Chit Lom, a little hard to find the restaurant’s entrance located on the 3rd floor of the Maneeya Centre building, which directly links to BTS Chit Lom at the Siam end.

Walk down the narrow stairs & through the bar into the beautiful restaurant.

Excellent decor

I really like the fact the tables are not too close together which certainly improves the atmosphere.

Baked seafood entree

This tasty dish is prepared and served in a traditional snail serving tray.

This is a superb dish beautiful served

This superb entree featured morsels of French mussels, clams & prawns, flavoured & baked with herb butter, cheddar, Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs.

If you lean closer to the screen I’m sure you will be able to smell the garlic. 🙂

An important message

This really is the best advice I can give you. 🙂

Beef Ribs

Another dish cooked perfectly was the bone-in braised beef short rib in red wine sauce (750 baht), slow-cooked until the meat became soft and fell off the bone, yet still retained a pleasant chewy texture. Notice the packet of baked garlic which was very tasty indeed.

A choice of vegetables

Choose the vegetables that you prefer with your ribs.

Here is my favourite main course

The slow cooked lamb shank is absolutely delicious.

Anyone for cake?

It would not be a proper Italian restaurant without cake. 🙂

Gosford Central Coast NSW is located on Brisbane Water just 80 km north of Sydney. Growing up in Sydney this area was where our family would spend our annual holidays.

The last leg of my road trip is just a short drive south to Sydney along the Pacific Highway.

Luckily I was on the VIP list at “8 on Eleven” & enjoyed a couple of hours drinking Moscow Mules, a classy place that should succeed.

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor

Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok was a street I had known about for such a long time but had never ventured there until now. It seemed every Bangkok restaurant review would recommend an establishment in this area & now I can understand why.

El Guacho

I am a great fan of the Wine Connection chain of restaurants & Google told me there was one at 208 Thong Lo 8 Alley so my brother & I caught the Sky train to Thonglo station & walked for 20 minutes or so looking for the restaurant. What we in fact found at the address was El Gaucho, so I’m assuming either Google got it wrong or the information was simply out of date. 🙂

Here is what Googled showed.

Wine Connection has morphed into El Gaucho.

So many restaurants & such little time.

I have decided on my next visit to Bangkok I will tear myself away from my beloved Soi 11 & stay in Thonglor.

Grand Centrepoint Hotel in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok

Right in the heart of Thonglor, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount. Sukhumvit 55 or Soi Thong Lo, is well known for its classy bars, boutique shops, fashionable clubs plus lots of hip restaurants. It’s also acknowledged as the Siam Square of Bangkok’s East side.

I was amazed by the number of Japanese restaurants in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, they were everywhere.

I am looking forward to having dinner at The Dock, they specialise in seafood & the menu looks excellent. Being an Aussie I love Sydney Rock Oysters as well as those big juicy ones from Tasmania. Kumamoto featured, I was there last October, & Brittany on the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, has over 2800 km of coastline, it provides nearly 60,000 tons of oysters each year, almost 50% of the total French oyster production.

This Soi 55 building caught my eye.

Prior to moving to Thailand from Australia in 2011 I lived on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise. On the beach there is a building called Focus which is the twin of this Soi 55 round building. 🙂

Rooftop Restaurant Bar Sofitel Bangkok on Sukhumvit Road between Nana & Asoke stations is on the 32nd floor of the hotel. L’Appart restaurant at the recently opened Sofitel is a delightful multi-faceted venue occupying the entire 32nd top floor of the hotel tower.

On the left is the Westin Hotel which is next door to Terminal 21, & on the right is the Sheraton.

Tonight there was quite a bit of haze over the city which effected the sunset & the view.

Thirty minutes later.

The Bangkok haze is still around I’m afraid.

The entire 32nd floor is occupied by the L’Appart restaurant & the Sky Bar.

Relax on the lounge with a cocktail or two.

The whole place is beautifully designed.

It certainly is a great looking kitchen. 🙂

Sit outside & watch the city lights.

There are probably between 25 & 30 Bangkok Sky Bars & this is one of the best. L’Appart opens daily from 5:00 pm at the Champagne Bar, and dinner is served from 7:00 pm.

Char Rooftop Bar Bangkok at Hotel Indigo at 81 Wireless Road is yet another addition to the growing number of rooftop bars in Bangkok. Open at 6 pm in time for the sunset.

Bangkok at night is rather stunning, when the lights come on it’s like a fairy land.

How are the beer prices?

Well I’m glad you asked. B160 for an Asahi or Heineken & B150 foe a Singha is quite reasonable for a rooftop bar of this quality.
