Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok was a street I had known about for such a long time but had never ventured there until now. It seemed every Bangkok restaurant review would recommend an establishment in this area & now I can understand why.
I am a great fan of the Wine Connection chain of restaurants & Google told me there was one at 208 Thong Lo 8 Alley so my brother & I caught the Sky train to Thonglo station & walked for 20 minutes or so looking for the restaurant. What we in fact found at the address was El Gaucho, so I’m assuming either Google got it wrong or the information was simply out of date. 🙂
Here is what Googled showed.
Wine Connection has morphed into El Gaucho.
So many restaurants & so little time.
I have decided on my next visit to Bangkok I will tear myself away from my beloved Soi 11 & stay in Thonglor.
Right in the heart of Thonglor, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent discount. Sukhumvit 55 or Soi Thong Lo, is well known for its classy bars, boutique shops, fashionable clubs plus lots of hip restaurants. It’s also acknowledged as the Siam Square of Bangkok’s East side.
Lots of Japanese restaurants
I was amazed by the number of Japanese restaurants in Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, they were everywhere.
Sukhumvit Soi 55 Thonglor Bangkok, The Dock
I am looking forward to having dinner at The Dock, they specialise in seafood & the menu looks excellent. Being an Aussie I love Sydney Rock Oysters as well as those big juicy ones from Tasmania. Kumamoto featured, I was there last October, & Brittany on the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean, has over 2800 km of coastline, it provides nearly 60,000 tons of oysters each year, almost 50% of the total French oyster production.
This Soi 55 building caught my eye.
Prior to moving to Thailand from Australia in 2011 I lived on the Gold Coast in Surfers Paradise. On the beach there is a building called Focus which is the twin of this Soi 55 round building. 🙂
Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017 photo blog covers the first 6 months of this year. No big travel plans except for visiting Australia in March & a couple of weekends in Bangkok.
This beautiful shot of North Pattaya includes the building where I live, just before the Holiday Inn.
This is not a travel blog just a personal photo collection from the 1st half of 2017.
Dave Elder & Hamish Elton
Two friends & I ding at Signature Steak & Seafood, sadly due to the slow down in Pattaya they closed their on January 31st.
Excellent steak at Signature.
I will be so sad to see this restaurant close.
A great casual restaurant for craft beer & hamburgers. From the left we have Matt, Jonathon, Hamish, Davis & Wayne.
Say no more, these are the best burgers in Pattaya.
They come in two sizes. small at B195 or large around B300.
Cloud over Koh Larn
Throughout my life I have lived in many places with a great view, however none come close to Pattaya bay.
And when you talk about sunsets
In my opinion the best I have ever seen are those from Markland my Pattaya condo.
Another special treat in Pattaya
Four or 5 times a week I enjoy reading my Kindle while having an hour foot massage for B260 including 30% tip.
Two Aussie mates from the Gold Coast.
Nick Partridge rarely smiles in a photo. big Steve Reade always does. 🙂
We lost a great character & friend on January 23.
Larry Krausz, a friend for around 30 years suffered a major stroke on October 28. After 2 months in the Bangkok Pattaya hospital on life support he was transported to Australia by a hospital Leer jet, thanks to his Medibank travel insurance. After a further month his life support was removed & he passed away peacefully.
I wrote the following eulogy & posted it on his Facebook page.
Today we lost Lazzorghini, a one off Austrian designed party machine who thought too much over indulgence was never enough. Originally designed as a concept model it was soon discovered it was for too complex to ever be mass produced.
Powered by a big heart & steered through life’s many hazards by a gentle soul.
A rather over-engineered unit that needed regular maintenance after many long happy journeys through smoked filled dens of iniquity that continually promoted sex, drugs & rock &roll.
Often sat idle for weeks on end during the repair process before exploding back on the group one circuit, where it would function non stop for days, providing of course that adequate lubrication was orally administered.
Adored by a huge number of fans, family & friends our special Lazzorghini will be sadly missed.
RIP little buddy.
We gathered at the Atlantic bar to raise a glass & remember out great friend, RIP.
Here is one of the new Starbucks on Beach Rd near Soi 6, the other one is at Big C. I often have coffee & a ham & cheese croissant for breakfast.
Drinks at the Hilton Sky Bar.
With friends Wayne Crocker & Hamish Elton.
One of my favourite photos.
Taken on February 10th 2017 from in front of Markland Condo in North Pattaya.
My favourite time is early in the evening before the crowd arrives.
My new Skechers
You can buy them at the Skechers shop in Central Festival for B4,500, ($128 USD) or do what I do, purchase online from Lazada for B2,100. ($60 USD). 🙂
My favourite selfie
An overcast Friday morning in Pattaya did not stop this princess from going to the beach to take 100 selfies.
Taken March 24 2017.
It doesn’t get much better than this. 🙂
The other exciting event in March apart from the above was my 2 week trip to Australia which included a road trip from Surfers Paradise to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.
Big Viv Kennelly & team
I took them to Leckerle in Naklua Soi 33 & they loved it. 🙂
Beer Bars Babes Pattaya Thailand are everywhere in the city, many tourists who visit think Walking Street is the only entertainment area, however they couldn’t be more wrong. This post is designed to show you some other areas where you can find some good bars, from back street down & dirty beer bars to up market sky bars.
Soi 7 & Soi 8 run between Beach Rd & 2nd Rd, the photo shows the always busy Lucky Star bar on the Beach Rd corner of Soi 8. Always plenty of action in these two streets, lots of bars, restaurants & hotels.
Location Soi 6 to Soi 8
Jump on a Baht bus at 2nd Rd for a 5 minute trip, cost B10.
These two bars just happen to have been my local drinking holes for the last 15 years. Billabong was the Cherry bar until it was taken over in 2016, I don’t go there much now because of a particularly rude cashier who does not know how to treat regular customers properly. Consequently Atlantic Bar is collecting all my spare cash, the staff are much friendlier as well.
The Atlantic Bar opens at 6 pm until very late and is opposite Central Marina shopping mall.
Billabong 2 formally the Cherry Bar.
On the corner of Soi 3 & 2nd Rd, they have a good band that starts playing at 9 pm.
Soi 6 to the Atlantic Bar & Drinking St.
We are currently focusing on North Pattaya & will check out Walking St & LK Metro later.
There are around 25 bars here & these days in 2017 most of the time they seem fairly quiet. Then again I’m rarely out late at night so things may well kick on around midnight.
One very good idea in place here is that all bars play the same music rather than compete with each other as most other Pattaya bars seem to do.
From Drinking St to Soi 29 & 33 Naklua,
This area is very lively at night.
Soi 33 Naklua is a very good street
Further north through the Dolphin roundabout & 150 meters along is Soi 33. There are a few good beer bars but the big attraction for me are some excellent restaurants, Leckerle on the right is German, Grottino also on the right and Bella Italia opposite.
24 Beer bars Naklua Rd
Wongamat beach-side bars
One bar is lay back & casual, & one is upmarket & classy.
A perfect spot to enjoy a cold beer or two by the beach.
Perhaps you want to go a little more upmarket?
The Beach Club at the Pullman Hotel is arguably the classiest bar in Pattaya. Happy hour is 5 to 7 pm on a good selection of beer cocktails & wine.
For an excellent room rate at the Pullman just book through THIS LINK.
Western style bars on Beach Road
Staring in North Pattaya we have Tavern By the Sea which is part of the Amari Hotel. Happy hour every night from 5 to 7 pm.
Follow the dotted line to find lots of good bars, LK Metro & Soi Buakhao is where the locals go to drink. They tend to leave Walking St to the tourists. LK Metro is the L shape street where i-Rovers is.
LK Metro is jammed packed with bars.
One of the busiest bars areas in Pattaya.
Kåres Party Bar
There is no better happy hour in Pattaya for beer drinkers.
Sportman’s pub Soi 13
On of Pattaya’s most popular pubs, food is excellent. This is one of my favourite places for breakfast & Sunday buffet lunch.
There are hundreds of go go bars, beer bars, strip shows & restaurants. However my main purpose for publishing this Beer Bars Babes Pattaya Thailand photo blog is to show you there are many other interesting places to visit in this vibrant city.
Thanks for visiting my Beer Bars Babes Pattaya Thailand photo blog
Farewell from Walking Street.
The Pattaya song
For an excellent budget hotel in north Pattaya just book through THIS LINK for a great rate.
Koh Samui sports bars have increased quite a bit since I was there in 2007. Most of the beer bars etc have numerous screens showing sport from all over the world. The header for this post show my friend John Martinaka Pothole& I on our first night in Chaweng at Henry’s Africa which seems to be the best bar in town.
Koh Samui sports bars
Henry’s Africa is a huge bar with lot’s of girls, some pool tables and TV screens. As you can see Pothole is enjoying himself. 🙂
Early in the evening they offer Chang beer at B79.
Best racks in town
Or so they claim.
There are a couple of small bars struggling to attract customers because of the low number of tourists in June 2016.
This iconic bar nightclub is a little further along the street, it is arguably Chaweng’s most popular nightspot. It boasts of one of the largest dance floors on the island, Green Mango is large, loud, & very busy from around 11 pm.
A great effect with the green and orange decorations.
A little further around the corner from the Green Mango there are quite a few smaller bars.
Pothole finds another friend.
Of course I’ll buy you a drink my dear. 🙂
It was a little early and there were no customers, most of the young tourists in Samui don’t go out until around 11 pm. Geriatrics like us are living in a different time zone. 🙂
Keep walking back to the main street and you will find the Hard Rock.
Bondi Aussie Bar & Grill
Another sports bar where the Aussies gather for obvious reasons. I was rather put off by the B210 price for a Jack Daniels. So I went to the bar next door to watch the State of Origin played on June 22nd, which QLD won.
The bar next door.
A glass or red here was only B80.
200 meters down the road from the Aussie bar is the Islander where I watched the AFL, next door is Legends, another well known sports bar.
Tropical Murphy’s Irish Pub
Quite a way up the road past Central Festival is Tropical Murphy’s another popular sports bar.
A fairly normal layout, however a funny thing happened as I took this photo, initially the Thai barman was standing towards the front of the bar, but as soon as I raised my camera he ran like a rabbit to get out of the shot. I’m guessing he is hiding from somebody. 🙂
VW sidewalk bar
There are lots of these great mobile bars where I live in Pattaya.
Itaewon Seoul good bars restaurants, people lights, it’s all there. This street in Seoul looks very ordinary through the day but it comes alive when night falls. It is the best bar restaurant area I have ever seen anywhere in the world.
There are many small lanes branching off the main street that are worth exploring. There are several red light districts in Seoul, some with the classic red lit windows that have become so famous in Amsterdam. These areas are mainly for locals, so it is best to have a guide if you plan on finding them. Itaewon however is home to a foreigner friendly red light district which welcomes all. The main area in Itaewon to find escorts is called Hooker Hill. This street is lined with bars with sexy girls standing outside, tempting gentlemen to come in and “buy them a drink”.
Many varieties of food
Itaewon used to be considered the trashy part of town, however recently it has been developing with upmarket restaurants, bars & designer stores.
Another nice spot to sit and watch the passing parade in Seoul.
Just before dusk
Sunset in Seoul and soon the crowd will arrive at Itaewon bars restaurants.
Lots of choices
The street is about 600 metres long.
Maple Tree Korean BBQ
The difficult part is deciding where to eat. 🙂
Thousand of bottles
Maple Tree Korean BBQ is the restaurant featured in the header of this post.
Prost pub and grill
A nice pub where you can watch the passing parade, the later it gets the busier it gets. 🙂
Many thanks to these guys for posing for my photo.
Nice French restaurant in Itaewon.
I originally wanted to eat at an Italian restaurant close by but it was so crowded with people waiting in a queue to get in I decided on French at Le Comptoir. Avocado & prawn to start then steak tartare.
Above Le Comptoir
Away from the maddening crowd in Itaewon.
Oreno Italian restaurant
This was the night before I wanted to go there, when I arrived the following evening the place was packed as you can see from the photo below.
Oreno was booked out, I should have gone last night. 🙂
Josip Jelačić was the Ban of Croatia between 23 March 1848 and 19 May 1859. He was a member of the House of Jelačić and a noted army general, remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and for his abolition of serfdom in Croatia.
Buskers in Zagreb
Three buskers doing their best to earn some money in Zagreb.
Standing in a small square filled with flower stalls is a mischievous looking statue of Petrica Kerempuh, the work of sculptor Vanja Radauš. A much-loved character from Croatian literature, Petrica Kerempuh is a plebeian prophet, rascal and cynical commentator on contemporary events, a sort of predecessor of modern standup comedians. His most notable incarnation can be found in “The Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh” (1936), written by Croatia’s leading 20th-century writer Miroslav Krleža.
Thai beer bars & flesh eating fish seemed to be the focus on my two visits to Thailand in 2010, the first trip was mid January to meet Bill Austin & Joan Baptiste, my friends from England who were on their way to Australia for the first time.
While on the subject of fun in Patttaya, here I am squeezed between two lovely ladies at the Atlantic one of the best Thai beer bars in 2nd rd.
When can I start having fun?
Out of control at the Jasmine beer bar in Soi 3.
Alan Kendall & a hot babe.
Alan is an Aussie who seems to fit right in to the Pattaya scene.
The golfers like the Atlantic Bar
Back in 2010 the golfers used to gather at the Atlantic bar Friday nights to drink beer and exaggerate about their amazing shots on the course that day. A very nice bunch of guys from all over the world, sadly they have now found a new venue for their after golf drinks.
Enjoying a beer at Gulliver’s with Alan Kendall
Gulliver’s is an excellent sports bar about 100 meters from y condo.
Tony Murphy feeding the fish.
Apart from the Thai beer bars the latest fad in Pattaya and other parts of the world is “Flesh-Eating Fish“ Performing ‘Pedicures’“, here is my friend Tony trying it out. I notice in the U.S. the process costs $45, in Pattaya it’s only $7.
My favourite restaurant in the whole world. The Sunday brunch is the best buffet I have ever had, everything from Alaskan crab, French oysters, NZ lamb, Japanese sushiu, etc etc. There are seven different kitchens to choose from.
I have been visiting the Thai beer bars & go go clubs at the infamous Nana Plaza since 1996 and have seen many changes. Back then there was about 10% LadyBoys, in 2010 that had risen to 25% now in 2014 there seems to be 50%.
Bangkok famous sexy go-go bars can be found in three areas, Patpong, Soi Cowboy & Nana Plaza. Patpong is where it all started many years ago. It has even been filmed in in a James Bond chase-sequence. Patpong has long since lost it’s title of number one for sexy shows Go-Go bars. Soi Cowboy now reigns supreme with Nana Plaza in 2nd place.
UPDATE: Since writing the above comments in December 2013 Soi Cowboy has now slipped somewhat in popularity in February 2017. Mainly because during the last couple of years the drink prices, and in particular the lady drink prices have risen too high. In many cases you will now pay over B200 the buy a lady a drink.
Say no more…….
As you can see Lollipop is now Suckers.
Here is a YouTube video taken February 21 2016.
Beer Bars & Go-Go bars in Nana Plaza
Greeting you when you pass beneath the ‘Nana Entertainment Plaza‘ entrance sign is a mass of glowing neon signs, yelling at you from all directions. Shouting even louder than the neon is the intriguing cast of upfront characters , lady-Boys and girls who will try and accost you, it’s all light-hearted and non threatening.
On the ground floor are mostly open-air beer bars to choose from. Girls will try to tempt you in for a drink or a game of Jenga but not much really happens here, however it is where I prefer to drink and watch the passing parade. The shows and the A Go Go Bars with naughty names like Lollipop,Pretty Lady and Red Lips are located on the first floor. Girls here will step into your path and will try to drag you in for a look.
Here we are at Nana Plaza
I’m with my friend John Martin aka “Pothole” at the first bar on the right as you walk into Nana Plaza, it’s the best place to watch all the girls & Lady-Boys walk past on there way to work. I have been visiting the Plaza for 20 years and have seen many changes in that time. Back then it was 10% Lady-Boys, now it seems more like 50% which does not suit me at all. 😥 On the other hand it does suit Pothole as he has been known the cross that dreaded line fairly often.
Soi Cowboy was named after the cowboy hat-wearing African-American who opened the first bar here in the early 1970s, this red-light district has a more laid-back, carnival-like feel to it than Patpong or Nana Plaza. Soi Cowboy is just next to Terminal 21, this very popular new shopping mall, so just cross the street and see it for yourself, or use Terminal 21 as an excuse to have some fun! Remember, you may not see this again anywhere else in the world!
Soi Cowboy Bangkok is in my opinion the best of the red light areas in this great city. Nana Plaza comes in 2nd place with Patpong Rd a distance third. Located near Sukhumvit Road, between Sukhumvit Soi 21 (also called Soi Asoke) and Soi 23, within walking distance from the BTS Skytrain’s Asok Station and the Bangkok Metro’s Sukhumvit Station. The Grand Millennium Hotel is nearby.
The go-go bars follow the pattern common in Thailand: alcoholic drinks are served and women in bikinis dance on a stage. Topless or even nude dancing.
Go-Go bars located on ground level along the two streets of Patpong are free to get in as long as you order a drink, which costs around 120 baht… but be aware that there are tricky places that will cost you a lot more without actually delivering anything better – and they may even be worse.
How to recognize the trick:
Someone will approach you with a nice list of fun entertaining features such as a ‘ping pong show’ and other well-known activities with ‘colorful’ names. So far, nothing really unusual.
He will say “It’s free to see for five minutes”… which means it won’t be free after the five minutes are up and as the guy seems trustworthy and speaks really fast, you somehow forget this fact.
The place not even be on Patpong itself but if the bar is upstairs and the bar has no sign and no name, get ready to be ripped off (nicely but effectively).
Once you are in, the show will have only one act and you will be asked for a tip, and another tip, and another… Basically you will have to tip for each ‘trick’ performed. And believe me, these girls have mastered the art of making you feel really cheap if you don’t tip them.
The girls will ask you for a lady drink, whether she sits next to you or even stands across the room… each drink costs at least 200 baht.
You will not see the bill until the last minute. In most normal Bangkok Go-Go Bars or beer bars, your bill is placed in a small box in front of you, which allows you to check the damage as you drink and let you decide if you want to offer another round or not. Usually a drink is around 100 to 120 baht. In the dodgy ones the bill never comes until the last moment
If you ask a girl how much her drink will cost you, she only knows once answer: ‘same as yours’, so naturally you think 100 to 120 baht… wrong, it’s 200 to 300 baht.
When the bill comes, it’ll be about 1,000 baht and don’t even waste your time arguing; you won’t win… just pay up and smile, realising you’ve got a nice story to tell your friends – just like I’m telling you now!
Thanks for visiting my Bangkok famous sexy go-go bars photo blog.
When I’m in Bangkok I like to stay in Sukhumvit Soi 11, here is an excellent budget hotel, if you USE THIS LINKyou will get a great rate of around B1100 per night, or $30 USD.
