The Five Star Vagabond

Super travel tips, all road tested by David Herd. I'm an Australian guy who moved to Thailand in 2011 & still travel the world as often as possible.

I have travelled to Brazil 8 times since 1998.

Rio de Janeiro worlds sexiest city

Rio de Janeiro worlds sexiest city is an exciting destination, wonderful beaches great weather and colourful happy people. I normally rent an apartment near the beach rather than stay in a hotel. It usually costs me $50 per night however my last trip was 2009 and I believe the city is far more expensive now.

Where else but Copacabana?

Brazil is such an exciting destination with far too many places of interest to describe in a few paragraphs. everyone’s favourite including myself is Rio De Janeiro, one of the most colourful cities on on the planet, however there are many other lessor known cities & towns  worth visiting, I will list some of them. Parity is a favourite of mine, the town is located on the Bay of Ilha Grande, 3 hours drive from Rio, which is dotted with many tropical islands. Paraty is known for the  cobblestone paved streets throughout the Historic Center District. No cars or trucks are allowed in this part of town. Check out these wonderful Brazilian girls doing the Samba in Paraty.

Here I am outside the Copacabana Palace Hotel.

The Copacabana Palace Hotel is the most famous and luxurious hotel in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s considered South America’s premier hotel, having received the rich and famous for the past 80 years. It faces the Copacabana Beach. You will get an excellent room rate if you book through THIS LINK.

I was using the  zoom lens on my Canon and focused on this group of young Rio de Janeiro schoolgirls from at least 20 meters away. Immediately  they saw the camera they struck a pose, it was an automatic instant reaction, for me it was a golden moment I will never forget. Right there in one instant that photo reflects the joy and spirit of Brazil.

Where is the girl from Ipanema?

Rio de Janeiro worlds sexiest city

Ipanema is more upmarket than Copacabana, it has more style & panache, both beaches are amazing places to see some of the most beautiful people on the planet. I must confess however Copa’s down & dirty wild side has more appeal for me.

The Girl from Ipanema

Rio de Janeiro worlds sexiest city

“Garota de Ipanema” (“The Girl from Ipanema”) is a well-known bossa nova song, a worldwide hit in the mid-1960s that won a Grammy for Record of the Year in 1965. It was written in 1962, with music by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes. English lyrics were written later by Norman Gimbel. The song was inspired by Heloísa Eneida Menezes Paes Pinto (now Helô Pinheiro), a seventeen-year-old girl living on Montenegro Street in the fashionable Ipanema district in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Daily, she would stroll past the popular Veloso bar-café, not just to the beach (“each day when she walks to the sea”), but in the everyday course of her life. She would sometimes enter the bar to buy cigarettes for her mother and leave to the sound of wolf-whistles. In the winter of 1962, the composers watched the girl pass by the bar, and it is easy to imagine why they noticed her—Helô was a 173-cm (five-foot eight-inch) brunette, and she attracted the attention of many of the bar patrons. Since the song became popular, she has become a celebrity.

Paraty, 3 hours from Rio.

Rio de Janeiro worlds sexiest city

Three hours in the opposite direction from Rio is Búzios,  a popular getaway from the city and a worldwide tourist site, especially among wealthy Brazilians and Argentinians. The peninsula is surrounded by 17 beautiful beaches and there are many fabulous restaurants and bars to choose from. It was in 1964, when Brigitte Bardot visited the small town, that Búzios actually became well known. Apart from well known destinations like Salvador & the Iguazu Falls there are 3 places at opposite ends of the country I would like to recommend,  in the south Florianopolis which boasts of 42 beaches, in 2009  Newsweek  placed Florianópolis in the “Ten most dynamic cities of the world”. An hour north is Balneário Camboriú, with its steep hills dropping down to the sea, is very popular among South Americans but not well known to people from other countries.  The beach is twice as long as Copacabana in Rio and far safer for tourists. Way up in the north east corner of Brazil is Praia de Pipa, one of the most famous beaches in Brazil, 84 kilometers from the city of Natal. With its crystal-clear waters, fine, white sand it is popular with surfers and backpackers. One of the best ways to travel around this huge country is to buy an airpass.

 Canoa Quebrada

This small fishing village, among dunes and cliffs, has good views and is becoming popular with tourists. The main street of Canoa, where most accommodation, restaurants and shops are concentrated, is called Broadway. The town is 160 km from Fortaleza.

My history, particularly over the last 30 years is dominated by overseas travel. I sold my home in Australia October 20th 2011 and have have been living in Thailand since then. I don’t know where the time has gone? It seems like you go to sleep one night, wake up the next morning, and 20 years have flashed by. Not sure how many years I have left, however I have enjoyed a wonderful charmed life, and if it all ended today I would leave this world with no regrets. I was born in Sydney halfway through the last century, started my travels in the 60s with the usual U.K. Europe adventure at the age of 20, back to Australia and worked in Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide in Sales & Marketing with multinational companies including Sanyo, Canon & Remington. Engaged to be married 3 times and never quite made it to the alter, finally realized by the mid 90s I was not cut out for "long term relationships" so I moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland in January 1987, worked for a couple of banks as a Financial Planner, I took a year off work in 1998 to travel and never went back to full time work again, after 25 fun filled years on the Coast I packed up and moved to Thailand. What is the purpose of this blog? Well I really want to use it to record my travel experiences & to display my photographs, give and receive travel tips, comment on places I visit, restaurants I eat in and use it to replace the autobiography I intended to write, apart from all that it helps me fill in my day. :) I moved to Thailand mainly because I wanted to keep travelling while my health allowed me to, there are huge advantages being closer to all the places I want to visit. Cost of living in Thailand is around 35% of the cost in Australia, plus flights are 50% cheaper because you are much closer to everywhere. ???? Consequently I am able to travel to many more places compared to living in Australia. Having said all that, it is & has always been my intention to return to Australia when my travelling is finished, I predict this will happen around 2021.
