Super travel tips, all road tested by David Herd. I'm an Australian guy who moved to Thailand in 2011 & still travel the world as often as possible.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017 photo blog covers the first 6 months of this year. No big travel plans except for visiting Australia in March & a couple of weekends in Bangkok.

This beautiful shot of North Pattaya includes the building where I live, just before the Holiday Inn.

This is not a travel blog just a personal photo collection from the 1st half of 2017.

Dave Elder & Hamish Elton

Two friends & I ding at Signature Steak & Seafood, sadly due to the slow down in Pattaya they closed their on January 31st.

Excellent steak at Signature.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I will be so sad to see this restaurant close.

 Jim’s Hamburgers

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

A great casual restaurant for craft beer & hamburgers. From the left we have Matt, Jonathon, Hamish, Davis & Wayne.

Say no more, these are the best burgers in Pattaya.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

They come in two sizes. small at B195 or large around B300.

Cloud over Koh Larn

Throughout my life I have lived in many places with a great view, however none come close to Pattaya bay.

And when you talk about sunsets

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

In my opinion the best I have ever seen are those from Markland my Pattaya condo.

Another special treat in Pattaya

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Four or 5 times a week I enjoy reading my Kindle while having an hour foot massage for B260 including 30% tip.

Two Aussie mates from the Gold Coast.

Nick Partridge rarely smiles in a photo. big Steve Reade always does. ๐Ÿ™‚

We lost a great character & friend on January 23.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Larry Krausz, a friend for around 30 years suffered a major stroke on October 28. After 2 months in the Bangkok Pattaya hospital on life support he was transported to Australia by a hospital Leer jet, thanks to his Medibank travel insurance. After a further month his life support was removed & he passed away peacefully.

I wrote the following eulogy & posted it on his Facebook page.

Today we lost Lazzorghini, a one off Austrian designed party machine who thought too much over indulgence was never enough. Originally designed as a concept model it was soon discovered it was for too complex to ever be mass produced.
Powered by a big heart & steered through life’s many hazards by a gentle soul.
A  rather over-engineered unit that needed regular maintenance after many long happy journeys through smoked filled dens of iniquity that continually promoted sex, drugs & rock &roll.
Often sat idle for weeks on end during the repair process before exploding back on the group one circuit, where it would function non stop for days, providing of course that adequate lubrication was orally administered.
Adored by a huge number of fans, family & friends our special Lazzorghini will be sadly missed.
RIP little buddy.

Larry’s friends

We gathered at the Atlantic bar to raise a glass & remember out great friend, RIP.

Here is one of the new Starbucks on Beach Rd near Soi 6, the other one is at Big C. I often have coffee & a ham & cheese croissant for breakfast.

Drinks at the Hilton Sky Bar.

Taken on February 10th 2017 from in front of Markland Condo in North Pattaya.

The Atlantic Bar is my bar of choice.

My favourite time is early in the evening before the crowd arrives.

My new Skechers

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

You can buy them at the Skechers shop in Central Festival for B4,500, ($128 USD) or do what I do, purchase online from Lazada for B2,100. ($60 USD). ๐Ÿ™‚

My favourite selfie

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

An overcast Friday morning in Pattaya did not stop this princess from going to the beach to take 100 selfies.

Taken March 24 2017.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

It doesn’t get much better than this. ๐Ÿ™‚

The other exciting event in March apart from the above was my 2 week trip to Australia which included a road trip from Surfers Paradise  to Sydney stopping at Kingscliff, Yamba, Port Macquarie, Forster-Tuncurry, Gosford & Coogee. Also dropped into Maroubra which is a place I have not seen for over 50 years. Just click on the links to see my photo blogs.

Big Viv Kennelly & team

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I took them to Leckerle in Naklua Soi 33 & they loved it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Sabai Wing Soi 1 North Pattaya

Sabai Wing Soi 1, 3 swimming pools and nice rooms, 100 meters from BigC, great value at only $23 usd per night. I live in the high-rise in the background, Markland. For a great room rate book here.

Next visitor was Paul Mooney

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Paul was on his way to Angkor Wat, Phnom Penh and Seoul.

Hilton Sky Bar

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Drinks at Horizon to celebrate Hamish living in Pattaya for 10 years followed by dinner at Patrick’s Steak House.

David, Nidd & Hamish.

Hilton March 28 9

Certainly a world class venue on the Hilton Hotel roof.

Sean & his evil twin.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

You certainly don’t have to look far to find two of the roughest heads in Pattaya, there is a frightening similarity in looks between Sean Tucker & Pothole Martin, PH naturally plays the role of the evil twin.

Hamish goes to Koh Chang

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

A day swimming with the elephants.

Here is his lovely girlfriend Nitt.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

She looks damn good on an elephant. ๐Ÿ™‚

Dual birthday party

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Matt & Jonathon & celebrated their 38th birthday one day apart in April. They celebrated with friends at a BBQ at Matt’s home in the back blockes of North Pattaya.

If Matt doesn’t stop reminding me about the Swans dismal 0/6 start to the season as opposed to the Crows undefeated 6/0, we probably won’t be able to continue being friends. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

A terrific night

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

With lots of nice people & some gorgeous girls.

Talking about gorgeous girls

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Here they are.

 The star of the show.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

There is never a dull moment when Bow has had a few drinks.

Matt pleading with Bow to behave. ๐Ÿ™‚

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Matt Harkness trying to convince Alexius Alex aka Bow to behave herself at the party. The chances she will follow his instructions are very slim indeed.

Retox Game On

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

One of the best sports bars in Pattaya, TV screens everywhere.

Sexy waitresses

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Her name is Phung & she is a very sexy babe. ๐Ÿ™‚

An Italian red while watching the sun go down.

Breakfast at The Pig & Whistle Soi 7.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I always ask them to remove the fried potato & tomato, this is what remains for B135 or $5aud.

Very strange sight.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Initially it looked like the boats were churning up the sand at low tide. Then I saw online a comment that it was an unusual bloom of plankton or similar.

Beach Road

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I walk along Beach Rd for about 25 minutes each morning, have breakfast, read the Bangkok Post & head home.

Jonathon Whiting

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

A well known Brisbane solicitor who is mad on travelling to South east Asia, Central & South America.

June 27 at Ronin Soi 16/2 Naklua

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

Hamish & I both thought Ronin was an excellent sushi restaurant with tonnes of atmosphere.

Upmarket & sophisticated.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

We both agreed we prefer the rowdy atmosphere at Genki in Soi 4.

Atlantic with Bill Perry.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I finally meet up with B ill from the Gold Coast, we have many mutual friends.

Atlantic bar girls

Some of the happy girls at the Atlantic Bar.

Mongrel mob at Atlantic.

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

From the left, Joergen, Steve Reade, Pothole, DH & Bill Curtis. A fairly scrappy looking bunch I’m sure you will agree. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh no! Not another cloud?

Pattaya life FiveStarVagabond 2017

I have just created a new profession, I am now a Cloudologist, who constantly participates in the art of Cloudology. Be impressed, be very impressed.โ€ฆ/

Author: David Herd

My history, particularly over the last 30 years is dominated by overseas travel. I sold my home in Australia October 20th 2011 and have have been living in Thailand since then. I donโ€™t know where the time has gone? It seems like you go to sleep one night, wake up the next morning, and 20 years have flashed by. Not sure how many years I have left, however I have enjoyed a wonderful charmed life, and if it all ended today I would leave this world with no regrets. I was born in Sydney halfway through the last century, started my travels in the 60s with the usual U.K. Europe adventure at the age of 20, back to Australia and worked in Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide in Sales & Marketing with multinational companies including Sanyo, Canon & Remington. Engaged to be married 3 times and never quite made it to the alter, finally realized by the mid 90s I was not cut out for "long term relationships" so I moved to the Gold Coast in Queensland in January 1987, worked for a couple of banks as a Financial Planner, I took a year off work in 1998 to travel and never went back to full time work again, after 25 fun filled years on the Coast I packed up and moved to Thailand. What is the purpose of this blog? Well I really want to use it to record my travel experiences & to display my photographs, give and receive travel tips, comment on places I visit, restaurants I eat in and use it to replace the autobiography I intended to write, apart from all that it helps me fill in my day. :) I moved to Thailand mainly because I wanted to keep travelling while my health allowed me to, there are huge advantages being closer to all the places I want to visit. Cost of living in Thailand is around 35% of the cost in Australia, plus flights are 50% cheaper because you are much closer to everywhere. ???? Consequently I am able to travel to many more places compared to living in Australia. Having said all that, it is & has always been my intention to return to Australia when my travelling is finished, I predict this will happen around 2021.
