Dover Calais Ferry

June 16, 2016 by David Herd

Uttoxeter in Staffordshire

Dover Calais Ferry Dover Calais Ferry from England to France was our starting point for our road trip to Brugge and Versailles, which finished in Brighton on the south coast of England. I was travelling with two English friends Bill Austin & Dave Catchpole, & the reason our trip started in Uttoxeter was to visit my good friend Alan Austin (Bill’s brother) who was a guest of Her Majesty for a rather major indiscretion involving transportation of a certain white powder from Spain to England.

Overnight at Maidstone

Dover Calais Ferry We stayed in the Townhouse Hotel in Maidstone which was excellent and left early for Dover, little did I realise at the time that quite a bit of tension would build up between the 3 of us over the coming days. Bill & I had been on successful road trips in the past which went as smooth as silk, however adding Dave to this trip seemed to effect the dynamics resulting in an unfortunate parting of the ways in Brighton.

First glimpse of the white cliffs

Dover Calais Ferry We really didn’t explore Dover, instead we went straight to the ferry terminal.

Waiting in the queue

Dover Calais Ferry There were certainly a lot of vehicles making the crossing.

Lots of trucks carrying freight

Dover Calais Ferry The trucks go on the ferry first then the private vehicles.

Ferries are quite large.

Dover Calais Ferry Which is comforting given the weather conditions can be rather rough in the channel.

A little chilly on deck

Dover Calais Ferry Bill and I looking forward to leaving Dover.

Incoming Dover Calais Ferry

Dover Calais Ferry They seem to be rather frequent travelling both ways.

Farewell to the white cliffs.

Dover Calais Ferry I guess any time old guys like me talk about the white cliffs of Dover a particular song comes to mind.

Let’s hear it Vera.

The magnificent white cliffs

Dover Calais Ferry The cliffs look quite fantastic, only 22 miles to Calais.

New Years Eve Sydney 2012

June 4, 2016 by David Herd

January 1st 2013, please note, this is not part of my Travel Blog. It’s my personal history, check it out if you wish.

Drummoyne

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 New Years Eve Sydney 2012 from 72 Wrights Road Drummoyne where I lived for six years from 1979 to 1984. This is late afternoon and everybody is getting ready for the fireworks, there are two spectacular shows, one at 9 pm for the children (and me) and one of course at midnight.

New Years Eve Sydney 2012

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 The apartments you see are in St Georges Crescent where I also owned another 3 bedroom waterfront apartment at Brackley Gardens, this was for investment & rental purposes I never lived there. It is interesting to look at prices way back in the 70s, I purchased Brackley Gardens for $48,000 in 1977 then sold 5 years later for $98,000.

Warwick Robinson

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 I have known Warwick for about 35 years, a nice fellow with a great sense of humour. He and his lovely wife Ady have lived in Cherrybrook for many years.

Peter Hesky

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 I have known Peter for a similar amount of time as Warwick, we enjoyed many great time together in the 70s & 80s. He is a great host and organized some terrific dinners at his Freeway Hotel in Artarmon.

Peter & I both love Mud Crabs and have polished off many back in the days I lived at Drummoyne, I must say however the best I have ever had have been in Singapore, follow THIS LINK to see what I mean.

In fact here is an example

photo Chilicrab32Kilo2.jpg These monsters are certainly not cheap, from memory this one set me back about $120. It’s from Sri Lanka and at 3.3 kilo the biggest I have ever eaten.

New Years Eve Sydney 2012

photo New Years Drummoyne 20.jpg The 9 pm fireworks show at New Years Eve Sydney 2012 gets under way. I must confess I have seen so many fireworks displays over the years they have lost a little of their appeal for me. Certainly the best I have ever seen was in the 80s when I would anchor my boat in the Harbour beside the opera House and be in the middle of the action. Equally as exciting and maybe more so was Rio de Janeiro on NYE 2007 when 2 million people converged on Copacabana beach, just follow THIS LINK to see what I mean.

And the beat goes on

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 I have another confession I was in bed trying to get to sleep at 11 pm. 🙂

I was more impressed by the food

photo New Years Drummoyne 37.jpg Our hosts Peter Hobbs and his lovely Thai girlfriend Pring put on a great spread.

And here she is 🙂

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 All I can say is Peter is punching way above his weight. 🙂

Peter & I the next morning on New Years Day.

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 Wrights Road in these apartments was my home for 6 years from 1979, some of the best years of my life. In fact check out my 1982 photo blog and see for yourself.

72 Wrights Rd

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 The smaller block in the middle was my home, I was in unit 12 on the top floor, Peter is on the ground floor on the left. Talking about property values again, I purchased in 1979 for $65,000 then sold in 1985 for $165,000. I believe now in 2016 they sell for over a million.

Flashback to 1982

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 One of the greatest eras in my life was living in Drummoyne in the 80s, looking back it was a mistake to move to Newport with my new fiancée thinking I was ready to settle down. How wrong can a man be?

New Years Eve Sydney 2012          New Years Eve Sydney 2012          New Years Eve Sydney 2012

Yes, I repeat how wrong can a man be?

Not too attractive from the street

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 However it was a great location to live with my white Mercedes Sports in the garage and my Bertram 25 moored right outside.

Robbie Bonnet

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 Robbie live here when I did in the 80s and he is still here now 35 years later. He owns a  Bob Jane T-Marts in Drummoyne however I believe it recently closed and he is moving to a new location.

Farewell to Wrights Road

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 The memories certainly came flooding back after spending New Years Eve Sydney 2012 at my old home in Drummoyne. It was great to catch up with lots of old friends, who say nostalgia is a thing of the past?

Talking about old friends

New Years Eve Sydney 2012 When I left Drummoyne on the morning of January 1st to drive to Port Macquarie I stopped in Dee Why for a coffee with another old friend Paul Slaughter.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg

May 24, 2016 by David Herd

Austrian Summer Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg rates up there with my favourite European memories. Breathtaking scenery, snow capped mountains and the wonderful food in Salzburg. This was certainly my best ever European trip which started in Lake Como then on to the French Riviera, a few days in the Cinque Terre  before heading for Milan,  Verona and Lake Garda.

I spent 10 days in a beautiful little French village north of Menton called Breil Sur Roya is known for trout fishing.

Hohensalzburg Castle

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg This fortress is over 900 years old and was originally built to guarantee the safety of the archbishops, while also serving as barracks and a prison.

Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg Salzburg has has three universities and a large population of students.

High fashion in Austrian Summer Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I’m rushing straight to the shops to buy a pair.

It’s nice to walk around clean city streets with no traffic.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg Salzburg is on the banks of the Salzach River, at the northern boundary of the Alps.….. The city acts as a hub for south-bound trains through the Alps into Italy.

Too much seafood is never enough

Salzburg wedding

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg The blushing bride looks very happy indeed.

Hotel Bristol Salzburg

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I stayed at this very nice hotel a few kms out of the city. Nice room and very good food in the restaurant.   Agoda rate the hotel Bristol at 9.2, this is very high indeed.

Dinner at my hotel

Austrian Summer Salzburg A schnitzel is compulsory in Austria. 🙂

OMG, the calories.

European road trip St Moritz Salzburg I’m guessing there may be over 2000 calories in this desert.

Salzburg is the home of Mozart.

Austrian Summer Salzburg Born on January 27, 1756, in Salzburg, Austria, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a musician capable of playing multiple instruments who started playing in public at the age of 6. Over the years, Mozart aligned himself with a variety of European venues and patrons, composing hundreds of works that included sonatas, symphonies, masses, concertos and operas, marked by vivid emotion and sophisticated textures. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg.

Sydney Gold Coast 2013

May 12, 2016 by David Herd

January 1st 2013, please note, Sydney Gold Coast 2013 is not part of my Travel Blog. It’s my personal history, check it out if you wish.

Sydney Gold Coast 2013

Sydney Gold Coast 2013 was a trip I did starting from 72 Wrights Road Drummoyne on January 1st after spending a couple of weeks at my cousin’s home in Balgowlah. I spent News Years Eve with Peter Hobbs & friends, left early the next day to meet friends for coffee at Dee Why before calling in to see Sue at Newport. From there I drove to my brothers home in Port Macquarie and finally onto the Gold Coast before flying back home to Thailand.

I played tennis here many times in the 80s.

Sue Ellis was and still is a terrific tennis player, we played many times and to my dismay I never won a single set. Sue just turned 60 this year and is ranked number 7 in the over 60 Tennis Seniors Australia Rankings in Womens Singles.

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia

March 4, 2016 by David Herd

This is not a travel blog just my personal photo collection

Balgowlah

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia Sydney 2011 farewell Australia is about my life changing event when on October 18 I left my home, friends, relatives and country to live in Thailand. I had two trips to Sydney in September & October and stayed with my cousin Debby at her home in Balgowlah before jumping on a plane to Bangkok on October 18.

Dinner at Manly

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia I had many friends to farewell including Paul Slaughter and his lady Clode who was a flight attendant for Air Canada.

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia          Sydney 2011 farewell Australia          Sydney 2011 farewell Australia

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia

Sydney 2011 farewell AustraliaLeaving Australia was a huge decision, two major factors came into play when making the decision. First was purely financial, I had not worked since 1997 instead I travelled the world like a man possessed. Consequently I spent a huge amount of money in the process and I always knew it had to come to an end. My only regret was the timing of the Global Financial Crisis in 2007/8 which coincided with me needing to sell my home to pay off the huge mortgage created by my travels. My home took me 3 years to sell, had I have sold in 2006 I would have realized around $250K more than I finally got in 2011. Oh well them’s the breaks and I have no regrets because those years of travel were wonderful and irreplaceable.

The second reason for my decision to move to Thailand was triggered by the first. I found myself in a position where I could no longer live at the same level in Australia that I was accustomed to. However I could live to that level in Thailand which was only around 1/3 the cost of living in Australia.

It is now 2016 my 5th year living in Thailand and the move has turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life.

Here is my view in Pattaya

Sydney 2011 farewell Australia

There are many people around the world who regularly criticize Pattaya, my message to them is simple, stay where you are because we don’t want you here.  Our stress free Pattaya life has no time to waste on the knockers and whiners, having said that thanks for visiting my Sydney 2011 farewell Australia photo blog.:)

I’ll leave it to the late great Glenn Frey to explain how I feel right now.

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok is known as the cities original red light district. These days it is more popular as a night market, however many pole dancing & beer bars are still there. These days Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy are more popular so called entertainment areas.

Shop to you drop at Patpong Road Bangkok

I notice many of the items here are so much cheaper if you shop at Chinatown.

It was a Tuesday night and very quiet, perhaps it was a little early for the crowds at Patpong Road Bangkok.

Nice corner bar

Most of the bars are in the next street which runs parallel to this one.

Larry finds some company

Sadly I felt I had to point out his companion was actually a LadyBoy.

 Say no more

I’m guessing this is not a pet shop where you can buy a kitten, but then again what would I know?

No photos please.

Travelling from Europe to Australia in 1993 naturally I had to stopover in Bangkok for some R & R.

The Inn Saladaeng

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

A very nice little hotel a short walk to Patpong. You will get a very good rate if you book through this link.

The hotel is only a 10 minute walk to Cloud 47 one of Bangkok’s fabulous Sky Bars.

Bangkok burger company

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

Right next door to the hotel is this very good burger restaurant, good food and cold beer, but for some reason they don’t serve wine.

Wine Connection is the better option

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok A short train ride to Patpong and to will find the Wine Connection, an excellent restaurant.

Patpong Road Bangkok          Wine Connection Silom          Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

A very busy restaurant with a great selection of food and wine.

Street food stalls

Fresh vegetables Bangkok style.

Bangkok breakfast

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

There is no doubt Thai people have taken street food to an art form.

Sala Daeng skytrain station is about 200 meters from the main Patpong area. If you are travelling from Nana or Asoke on Sukhumvit you need to change trains at Siam station.

Fabulous street food

Patpong Road red light district Bangkok

You can eat well here for around B50.

Lucky his friend is holding him

I guess he just finished a hard days work so it’s time for a little nap.

Goodbye from Cloud 47

Hooters Pattaya opening night was on New Years Eve 2015 so we decided to make it our first stop when seeing off the old and welcoming the new year.

From another perspective

photo Gorgeous.jpg Here is a test can you see the very large bottle of Absolut Vodka? Vodka, what Vodka? I don’t see any vodka.

Great room with an upstairs sports bar

Call me old fashioned but I prefer to sit quietly at the bar with a cold Asahi draught and take in the eye candy.

Girls were busy at Hooters Pattaya opening night

photo IMG_1697 - Copy.jpg The girls all looked great in there Hooters outfits, there seemed to be an even mix of Russian & Thai girls.

If I had to pick a favourite

Hooters Pattaya opening night I don’t think we will run out of booze ant time soon at Hooters Pattaya opening night.

David Herd and Larry Krausz My friend Larry & I came away with a very good first impression of Pattaya’s latest addition to the the cities fabulous entertainment venues.

Sadly on October 29th 2016 Larry suffered a major stroke, he was in hospital until December before they flew him home to Australia. Then late January they took him off life support and he passed away, RIP old buddy.

Geoff’s Birthday Party Pattaya style

December 30, 2015 by David Herd

Geoff Robinson turns 50

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style

Geoff’s Birthday Party Pattaya style at Heaven Gentleman’s club, in this case we use the term loosely. Geoff and his crazy friends are an international “mongrel mob” from all around the world, these guys are hell bent on drinking the town dry.

This great photo shows what a happy bunch of people they are. There are 4 guys from Australia, 1 from New Zealand, 4 from the UK, 1 from the USA, 1 from Germany, 2 from Norway and 1 from Finland. Not to be mistaken for a pot-pourri of poofters, more like a Soi 6 symposium.

Happy birthday Khun Geoff

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style The girls welcome Geoff and his friends to Heaven Gentleman’s club on Soi Kasetsin 11 on Pratumnak Hill.

Early in the proceedings Geoff’s Birthday Party Pattaya style

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style It’s only fair to point out Geoff’s rise from humble beginnings. He was a rather shy disturbed lonely child who blossomed later in life when he discovered girls and beer. He turned into a good footballer playing lock forward for Oakdale, an outer western suburb in Sydney. At the 2006 census, Oakdale had a population of 1,006 people so assuming 1/2 were children & 15% of the remainder were men aged around 20, simply proves there was very little competition for a spot in the side. 🙂

Recent headlines in the local paper proves the club never recovered after the loss many years ago of their star lock forward. Many people thought of Geoff  as the “Forest Gump” of Oakdale footy.

“Oakdale Rugby League Football Club is facing disaster before a ball is kicked in the 2014 Group 6 competition.”

Being a fair unbiased reporter I asked Geoff for his version of life at the Oakdale footy club.

“We were part of Group 6 competition. All the ex NRL players who were cut headed into the group. It was an extremely tough competition. I’ve endured a smashed cheekbone, broken jaw, so many concussions I can’t count them. If you couldn’t handle yourself on the park you couldn’t make it. I was best and fairest 1985. Best forward 1987 & 1990.”

Lets get this show on the road

Birthday Party Pattaya style Even though among he is known among his friends as the smiling assassin or the Sultan of Soi 6, deep down he is just a hansum chick magnet.

Without further ado lets see a short video of the birthday bash

I think you may now have a general idea of the direction this party is heading.

See the tattooed guys

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style Guys, what guys? I don’t see any guys. 🙂

This sexy man is Khun Geoff

Geoff Robinson Gosford He Mak Mak, we love him long time.

Sorry girls I’m engaged

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style Nana Asaya seems to have the wild man under control, and I can’t deny it, they are a very attractive couple.

Living quietly in Gosford

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style

When not in Thailand partying in Soi 6 Geoff lives a quiet life in Gosford on the central NSW coast.  As you can clearly see from the above photo he lives as any other 50 yo Aussie who has three sons and one grandson. Happy birthday granddad. 🙂 Doesn’t everybody have beer on tap in his lounge room these days?

According to my local “deep throat” who we shall refer to as “the Big V”  Geoff apparently suffered from many beatings from the local thugs before deciding enough was enough. He took up Karate determined not to let anybody kick sand in his face ever again. 🙂

He now holds a black belt in Karate and occasionally gives himself an uppercut when he goes off the rails in Soi 6.

Stop splashing or I’ll kick the shit out of you.

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style The birthday boy issues a silent warning.

“The courageous fighter shuns violence. The skillful soldier avoids anger. A mighty warrior does not fight for petty conquests.” Master Po.

Here is where Geoff is at

The monster mash

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style I don’t expect anybody to know what the Monster mash is. However looking at this fabulous photo I had a flashback to 1962. Take a look at this video and tell me if you see any resemblance to the guys in the photo, just saying……..

Am I right, or am I right? 🙂

Is is getting dark or is it my eyes?

David Herd Thailand No, I’m sure it’s getting darker.

Macbeth

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style Ah yes, old man. You can see the skies. They look like they’re upset about what mankind has been doing, and they’re threatening the Earth with storms. The clock says it’s daytime, but dark night is strangling the sun. Is it because night is so strong, or because day is so weak, that darkness covers the earth when it’s supposed to be light? Macbeth.

Let there be light

Birthday Party Pattaya style  “Let there be light,” and there was light.” Being a practising atheist I’m not revealing who originally said this.

The boys are back in town.

I love this shot

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style This one has got to be worth framing. 🙂

Bring on the tucker

The cake arrives

Geoff Robinson Gosford

Doug is there to supervise. Known  among his friends as the “Evil Duck” he is responsible for the huge profits made by San Miguel. I am told the Philippine government are considering adding him to their new years honour list. A Soi 6 tragic who works in Australia for a law firm with a name like Suckers & Bogans who have the following trademark.

Our motto

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style

You broke the law, we are here to add to your pain. 🙂

Later that night

Roxy Bar Soi 6 Naturally the party moved to Soi 6 and the night eventually turned into a blur. For those of you who like to be close to the Soi 6 action here is a good hotel close by. This link will get you a great rate.

My birthday present for you.

Geoff's Birthday Party Pattaya style My birthday present for you is this little photo blog to thank you for your friendship and support, I hope you and your many friends enjoy it.
