Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand

December 20, 2016 by David Herd

A little shade on Pattaya Beach

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand, everybody who visits the beach side city will regularly hear this as they pass the many bars, shops & massage parlours. “Hello welcome” is probably the most repeated phrase in Thailand. 🙂

There is always something to see on Beach Road Pattaya, I’m so happy to wake up and see the wonderful view every day.

This post highlights the interesting things I see on Beach Road every day.

And here is my view

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Is that magnificent or what?

Morning exercise on Beach Road

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Most mornings I walk along Beach Road about 8 am, there is always something to photograph.

Above we have the healthy, below the not so healthy.

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand

I have read many super models smoke to control their body weight, clearly in this case it has not worked. 🙂

This centuries most popular female entertainment

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand A females favourite pastime, when too many selfies is never enough. ?

My favourite selfie

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Taken March 24 2017.

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand          Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand          Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand

It doesn’t get much better than this. 🙂

Safety first

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Good to see these guys wearing crash helmets, too bad about the pedestrians on the footpath, let’s not forget “this is Thailand”.

My tyres are fatter than yours

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Not too sure what the advantage is have fat tyres on a bicycle, unless you are a fat guy like me. 🙂

Your tyres aren’t fat, these are fat. 🙂

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Big super blue boom box, block the footpath, no problem this is Thailand.

Sensible people wear hats on the beach

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Hats! What hats, I don’t see any hats. 🙂

Look closely, surely you can see the hats

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Is this a trick question? 🙂

Work begins on the pipeline

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Highly skilled workers commence this 200,000,000 Baht project to the relieve the flooding on Beach Road.

“OOPS” Houston we have a problem.

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand Not only were the operators lacking in the skill department the project that took many months also failed miserably.

So Beach Road still floods.

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand I really don’t think you will ever stop this flooding, there is such a huge volume of water from the tropical storms no drain or gutter can cope.

The bikini babes hit the beach

Hello welcome Pattaya Beach Rd Thailand After the rain the sun come out and the bikini babes hit the beach. 🙂

Pattaya Parasailing every day

October 2, 2016 by David Herd

Every morning

Pattaya Parasailing every day  Pattaya Parasailing every day except for the few occasions the weather is so bad they have to cancel. Most of these tourists are from China, they pay for their holiday before leaving so a fair bit of the money never makes it to Thailand.

Organised chaos

Pattaya Parasailing every day

They buzz around like mosquitoes, personally I would not do this because I just don’t trust the Thai boat drivers.

 Coming in to land

Pattaya Parasailing every day

There are 4 or 5 of these barges located on the bay,  non-parasailers can also come out to the pontoon to watch the fun for a small cost.

One of the overpowered speed boats.

Pattaya Parasailing every day About 750 HP is a ridiculous waste of money, I’m guessing they are just showing off to their competitors. When I lived in Australia I had one Yamaha 200 HP powering my boat, that used to cost me about $25 aud per hour in fuel. So these guys are obviously making plenty to be able to justify these three huge engines.

Stuck on the sand.

Every which way but loose

Pattaya Parasailing every day

This was the name of the 1978 Clint Eastwood movie, the phrase reminds me of the speed boats in this photo, it seems to be total chaos. 🙂

Check out the crowd on the barge

Pattaya Parasailing every day All waiting for their turn to fly.

Flying high

Pattaya Parasailing every day The most popular attraction for tourists.

Chaotic & crazy Parasailing in Pattaya

 A storm is looming

Pattaya Parasailing every day The black clouds are coming across the bay but the tourists don’t seem to care.

Here it comes

Pattaya Parasailing every day There is no better sight than watching a storm roll in over Pattaya bay.

A beautiful rainbow over the bay

Pattaya Parasailing every day

After the rain in Pattaya there a beautiful day always follows.

Low tide

Pattaya Parasailing every day Quite a walk for the tourists to get to the boats when the tide is out.

Finally another busy day on the bay

Things have changed for the better in 2017, the busses no longer drop off the tourists in Beach Rd so the footpath & beach is clear of a morning.

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay

September 21, 2016 by David Herd

Pattaya Beach 1980

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay, lets start with the old clunkers, funnily enough some of these boats from 1980 are still being used today.

Here is a perfect example in 2016

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay I guarantee this classic has been working in the bay for 60  or more years. I would definitely recommend a life jacket. 🙂

Protection from the burning sun?

Many wonderful boats Pattaya BayNo way José , just sit there & fry.

At least the captain has shade in this one.

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Forget the passengers the captain is ok. 🙂

This old bucket has just had a paint job.

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Looks pretty good with the new paint job.

One extreme to another

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Here is one of the hundreds of speed boats that take tourists, mainly Chinese, to Koh Larn & Para-sailing. This one is grossly overpowered with almost 700 HP to push it along.

Even all that power doesn’t always do the job.

These Thai drivers are not very skillful I’m afraid.

Every morning in Pattaya

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay The boats start gathering on Pattaya beach from 6.30 every morning.

Here come the Chinese tourists

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Every day thousands flock to Pattaya to board the boats.

And now for something different

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay A nice catamaran pulls into the beach.

 Koh Larn ferry

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay The 40 minute ferry ride to Koh Larn will set you back B30, or 86 U.S. cents.

Needs a little work

photo Boatrepairs.jpg One owner, & open to all reasonable offers.

Here is one being done up

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Still a little work to be done but starting to look good.

There are some luxury boats here as well.

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Just wander around some of the marinas along the coast and you will finds some very nice boats. However please don’t expect the “French Riviera”. 🙂

Ocean Marina yacht club

photo Ocean20Marina203.jpg I could happily live aboard this baby. 🙂 If you would like to enjoy a little luxury for around $50 usd per night just book through THIS LINK.

Yacht club

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Not too bad at all. 🙂

One of these would do me

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay This would be a great little runabout.

Here is a classic

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Don’t know if it’s a yacht, a ketch, a sloop or none of these, but it is a beautiful boat. 🙂

High & dry in Pattaya

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay Low tide as I’m sure you have already guessed. 🙂

For sale?

Many wonderful boats Pattaya Bay One owner, needs a little work. 🙂

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach

June 14, 2016 by David Herd

Nature at it’s best

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach are one of the many advantages of living on Beach Road Pattaya overlooking the bay. I regularly see some of the most incredible cloud formation my 17th floor apartment in Markland condo. The photo above shows some beautiful cumulus clouds hovering above Koh Larn island while the para sailors buzz around Pattaya bay like angry mosquitoes.

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach

Blue sky, white clouds on a sunny day, life does not get better than this. I spend a few hours each day on my computer producing my photo blogs, not sure if it’s a hobby or an obsession, however it gives me great satisfaction to glance over the top of my monitor which I do one hundred times a day, and see the clouds rolling across the bay.

 Looking north to Wongamat

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach Wongamat is the next beach north of Pattaya, there are many beach side condos and hotels overlooking a nice sandy beach. The yellow building in the foreground is the Dusit Thani five star hotel.

Fascinating Pattaya clouds over Koh Larn

Koh Larn is a B30 40 minute ferry ride from Bali Hi wharf, the crystal clear water is a huge improvement over Pattaya.

The “Ripleys Believe it or not” hot air balloon is actually anchored by a cable so customers won’t go flying of in the wild blue yonder.

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach Nearly every day there is another interesting cloud to photograph.

An interesting story

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach

Work stopped on the high rise nearly two years ago over because of questions about building approvals and specifications. Hundreds of people would have paid deposits & by now be wondering if they have lost their money.

Angry clouds

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach Up to now I have featured the pretty clouds, now it’s time for some angry clouds. 🙂

Looking south from my apartment

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach The building in the foreground is the A1 hotel which is shaped like a ship, the tall building is North Shore, the most upmarket condo block in central Pattaya.

Another awesome cloud formation

Fascinating clouds Pattaya Beach So many clouds to photograph and so little time. 🙂

Pattaya Bay Beach Resort Thailand

Pattaya Bay Beach Resort

 photo 4254b01b-8b2a-4113-8bd2-cc940223a7a4.jpg

Pattaya Bay Beach Resort is a city two hours south of Bangkok. My first visit was 37 years ago in 1980 and after many trips over the years since then I decided to move here from Australia in October 2011. Without a doubt it was the right decision given how expensive the cost of living in Australia has become. Don’t get me wrong, I still love Australia with a passion, however at my age Thailand offers a better lifestyle at an affordable price.

The following photos and video were taken from the naval base on Pratumnak Hill beside the communication tower you can see in the centre of the above photo.

Construction was halted in 2014 due to alleged anomalies in the building specifications and planning permits.  Nobody seems to have any idea if and when work will re-commence.

In late 2016 it was reported they have to now remove the top 8 floors of the building.

Pattaya storm water pipe

November 16, 2015 by David Herd

In comes the storm

photo IMG_8314.jpg Pattaya storm water pipe is planned to be the solution to Beach Road flooding after every storm. The problem is they need to replicate what they are building opposite Soi 6 in at least 4 other locations.

So the problem begins as you see above when the storm rolls in.

Beach Road floods

photo Beach20Rd20rain.jpg When the storm hits within a matter of minutes Beach Road disappears.

The footpath disappears as well

 photo Beach Rd flooded.jpg

The volume of water is too much for any drain of gutter to handle.

 The solution stage one

photo Beach Rd repair.jpg This was how it all started by digging up the footpath opposite Soi 6. Naturally at this stage we had no idea what was happening.

The channel

photo Beach Rd drain repair 2.jpg We still were not sure what the plan was.

Progress

photo Storm damage Sept 18 3.jpg The work was progressing 4/7.

Lots of equipment in play

photo Beach Rd Oct 8 2.jpg It must be costing a fortune with all this equipment in play.

Opposite Soi 6

photo Beach Rd drain Oct 16 2.jpg Those buildings you can see are on the corner of Soi 6.

To add to their problems

photo Storm damage Sept 18 2.jpg A storm arrived and wrecked part of the footpath and work site.

Sandbags to keep the water out

photo Beach Rd repairs Oct 3 1.jpg On the right you can see the damaged footpath, meanwhile lets hope the sandbags are effective.

The pump station

photo Beach Rd drain Oct 6 5.jpg I’m guessing this will be where the pump will be located.

Pattaya storm water pipe

Pattaya storm water pipe As you can clearly see it is a frenzy of activity.

Ooops!

Beach Rd Pattaya Not everything goes to plan here in Thailand.

Houston we have a problem

Beach Rd Pattaya

I have a feeling the boss is not going to be happy.

 It’s not a pipedream

photo Beach Rd pipe.jpg After 4 months of continuous work the first length of pipe is installed.

Then  mid November a large barge arrives

Pattaya storm water pipe Getting ready for the 2nd length of pipe.

 Here comes the pipe.

David Herd Thailand

Three pipes of this length were joined together.

Para-sailors in the background.

Pattaya storm water pipe Life goes on as usual in Pattaya, the para-sailors are here every day.

A short video

Thanks for visiting my Pattaya storm water pipe photo blog, I will post more as it happens.

Here is a quote from The Pattaya Mail. a local newspaper on June 17 2016. “In the past year, Pattaya spent 170 million baht to install three huge drainage pipes at the Dusit Curve, Soi 6, and near Walking Street. But even short rainstorms since their completion have shown the pricey pipes are unable to solve Beach Road’s chronic flooding problem.”

Storms smash Pattaya beach

August 4, 2015 by David Herd

Here’s how it starts

Storms smash Pattaya beach Storms smash Pattaya beach on a regular basis, especially in the wet season between July & November. Gutters & drains just can’t handle to huge downpours.

Here is the result

photo Storm damage July 26 2.jpg It’s a never ending problem for the local council who can’t seem to cope with the problem.

Ugly & dangerous

Storms smash Pattaya beach It’s both ugly & dangerous and won’t e solved until they improve the drainage problems.

Beach Road goes under

 photo Beach20Rd20rain.jpg

There are no drains and gutters that can cope with the amount of water in such a short time.

The footpath disappears

photo Storm April 8 6.jpg After 20 minutes of rain this is the result, no footpath. 🙂

You can see the sand being washed away

Storms smash Pattaya beach

In the wet season between June & November this is a regular occurrence.

The storm water also runs down from 2nd road to add to what is one Beach Road.

Not a pretty sight

Life goes on as usual in Pattaya, the boats taking out the para-sailors are here every day.

The roads flood so quickly as the drains just can’t handle the incredible volume of water, it then spills over to the beach. Often these storms only last for 30 or 40 minutes however that’s enough time to cause havoc.

The cavalry arrives

photo IMG_5086.jpg Normally soon after the storm you will see these guys busy restoring the damage. It’s now August 2015 & sadly in the last six months they have been strangely absent.

After the storm a beautiful day returns.

Chinese storm Thailand beach

August 4, 2015 by David Herd

Pattaya Beach

Chinese storm Thailand beach Chinese storm Thailand beach every day of the year and climb aboard powerful speedboats which take them to nearby Koh Larn or para sailing in Pattaya bay

South Pattaya

Chinese storm Thailand beach In the background on the right if the famous Walking St, you can see restaurants built (many illegally) over the water. The tall condo building has only recently been completed during the current Pattaya building boom.

Thousands arrive every day

Chinese storm Thailand beach Of course there is some controversy about who receives the revenue as most of the money is paid on packaged tours in China when they book their trip. Pattaya is suffering from a downturn in tourism, here are comments made in a recent article in June 2015 in the Bangkok Post; “Pattaya hotels are struggling to survive and are being pressured by Chinese travel agents to reduce their room rates by 30-40%. Hoteliers in the resort city have been relying mainly on Chinese tourists after the sharp fall in European tourists, particularly Russians, due to the economic recession in their countries. Locally run Pattaya hotels have faced an oversupply since last year and the situation… “

Slightly over powered

David Herd Thailand An example of one of the speedboats with three 225 HP Yamaha motors, a slight case of overkill. Are there any accidents you ask? Of course there are, many of the Thai skippers are unlicensed and high on drugs or booze, if an accident occurs they invoke the well used Thai strategy of “run & hide”. 🙂

Para sailing on Pattaya bay

Chinese storm Thailand beach The buzz around like mosquitoes and yes sadly accidents often do happen here as you will see in the following news video.

Para sailor killed on honeymoon

This sad incident happened in 2011 however the safety situation does not seem to have changed since then.

Hundreds of boats

Chinese storm Thailand beach

This is a huge business in Pattaya taking Chinese tourists to Koh Larn.

About to land

David Herd Pattaya

Lets hope he has a soft landing. 🙂

Whew! back safe & sound

Chinese storm Thailand beach

I’m sure many of these tourists will never forget their Pattaya holiday.

Buzzing like mosquitoes

Even the storms don’t stop the boats.

An awesome sight watching the storm roll in over Pattaya bay.

Screaming Yamahas

I mentioned earlier I don’t have much confidence in the Thai boat divers, here is how they cope with sandbanks.

If you build it they will come, Chinese storm Thailand beach. 🙂

Chinese tourists Pattaya

Every day of the week they come from China and elsewhere.

Lined up ready to go

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

April 4, 2015 by David Herd

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Tropical storm floods PattayaTropical storm floods Pattaya, when it rains it really pours down. I love to see the storm clouds roaring across Pattaya bay from my condo. You can can also watch from anywhere in the world on my webcam.

Here it comes

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

I really love watching the black clouds roll in over the bay.

Is this a road or a river?

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Looks more like a river to me. 🙂

Oh oh! This does not look good.

Tropical storm floods PattayaThe roads flood so quickly as the drains just can’t handle the incredible volume of water. Often these storms only last for 30 or 40 minutes however that’s enough time to cause havoc.

The result

Pattaya stormThe beach gets smashed time and time again throughout the year this is the result.

Gutters can’t handle the volume

Pattaya Beach

I don’t think there is any drainage system that can handle the sheer volume of storm water.

Repairs are needed

Tropical storm floods Pattaya

Sadly this in an all too familiar sight on Pattaya beach.

Soggy footpath

The aftermath of the storm.

Crazy idea

Tropical storm floods PattayaHere are 3 pumps to take the water from the flooded road onto the beach, don’t ask me to describe the logic behind this crazy idea. It simply washes away the sand as you can see in the above photos. One thing I do know however, logic and common sense are thin on the ground in Thailand.

The cavalry arrives

Repairing the beach.

A perfect Pattaya day

Tropical storm floods PattayaAfter all the rain and floods and beach erosion you can always be sure a perfect day is just around the corner.

Pattaya beach bay city views

Pattaya beach bay

Pattaya beach bay

Pattaya beach bay & city views is a collection of photos from Pattaya bay & the surrounding area. Here’s what I see each day from my condo, best view I have had from any of my previous homes.

Low tide Pattaya Beach Bay

David Herd Thailand

From July for a few months we get very low tides and the beach looks better than it really is.

Chinese tourists boarding the boats

Pattaya beach bayEvery day they line up in their hundreds to go Para Sailing and to visit Koh Larn island.

Boats everywhere

This sight is repeated every day of the year on Pattaya beach bay.

Bali Hi Wharf south Pattaya

Pattaya beachIn the background the building under construction is now 50 floors high (as of September 2014) Currently shrouded under controversy due to alleged unauthorised changes to the original plan.

Ferry to Koh Larn

Bali Hai pierA cheaper way to get to Koh Larn is by ferry from south Pattaya, a 40 minute ride for 30 Baht.

 North Pattaya & Wongamat

Pattaya beach bay To the left of the Holiday Inn, the building with the green light, is Markland. I live on the 17th floor with views of Pattaya beach bay.

Looking south from Markland.

Work stopped on this project in 2014 due to disputes over height and position.

This is a very common sight during the wet season.

Ok, lets fix it

Pattaya beach bayThe rainy season in August & September plays havoc with the beach, Pattaya drains & gutters can’t handle the incredible downpours which overflow and wash away the sand.
