Eleven thousand restaurants & such little time

Three days dining October 2018

Eleven thousand restaurants & such little time

Eleven thousand restaurants

Eleven thousand restaurants & such little time, dining in Bangkok can be rather confusing, because there are just so many good places to eat. Having said that, I must point out that even after living in Thailand for seven years 90% of my diet is western style food.

The Hass Bistro

Eleven thousand restaurants Avocados are one of my favourite things to eat & drink in a smoothie. This simple little cafe is in Klang Avenue which runs off Sukhumvit midway between Thong lo & Phrom Phong BTS stations.

Lets take a closer look.

Eleven thousand restaurants Chicken, cheese & tomato between 2 halves of avocado.

Yuna Japanese Restaurant and Bar

Eleven thousand restaurants  Located near the Grand Swiss hotel in soi 11/1 Nana. Food & service are good with  a rather authentic Japanese atmosphere.

Eleven thousand restaurants such little time but I’m really trying. 🙂

Eleven thousand restaurants The food above + a glass of house wine was total of B920 or $38 Aud or $28 USD. I’m still on my avocado push, notice the tasty serve above with creme cheese. 🙂

Oh no! Not more avocado. 🙂

Eleven thousand restaurants

Of course there is always more when you are addicted to this wonderful fruit. Follow THIS LINK for the many benefits of avocado.

Want a closer look at this great breakfast?

Eleven thousand restaurants Presented by the Bangkok Baking Company at the JW Marriot on Sukhumvit.

Here is a YouTube video on the many benefits of avocado. Just follow THIS LINK.

El Mercado is El Magnifico.

Eleven thousand restaurants Much more than a grocery store & delicatessen. My photo blog for lots more information can be found on THIS LINK.

This is what I chose for lunch.

Eleven thousand restaurants Cultivated in Cancale, in the beautiful Bay of Mont St Michel, Brittany region of France, The Special de Cancale this a slightly acidic oyster loved for its taste of iodine, its firm flesh, light nutty flavor.

Book your Bangkok hotel through THIS LINK for a great discount, plus you can pay later & cancel free of charge if you wish.

For over 20 years I have been enjoying Oxtail stew at the Busstop in Soi 4 Nana.

Eleven thousand restaurants We used to get double the size for 1/2 the price, oh well I guess that’s just inflation. 🙂

This was the size in 2016.

Soi 4 Bus Stop (3) As you can clearly see the size is shrinking.

Pirate Chambre

Eleven thousand restaurants It’s a little hard to find the restaurant’s entrance located on the 3rd floor of the Maneeya Centre building, which directly links to BTS Chit Lom at the Siam end.  The slow cooked lamb shank is absolutely delicious, more photos on THIS LINK.

Lets not forget Wine Connection.

Eleven thousand restaurants Spanish style Gambas is my favourite dish at Wine Connection only B210.

Finally farewell from Starbucks at EmQuartier

Eleven thousand restaurants I’m at one of their outlets nearly every day. Thanks for visiting my Eleven thousand restaurants photo blog.

Bangkok Hustle Nana Seven slash one

November 1, 2018 by David Herd | 0 comments

Small alley beside Nana station

Bangkok Hustle Nana Seven slash one

Bangkok Hustle Nana Bangkok Hustle Nana Seven slash one may sound a little confusing, however let me explain this title. Soi 7/1 is a small alley off Sukhumvit Road adjacent to Nana station. I sometimes stay at a very good budget hotel called iCheck Inn Nana, which is at the end of the street about 200 meters from Sukhumvit Road.

Walking that 200 meters is where the hustle comes into play, you have to pass quite a few massage parlours where the girls & ladyboys are quite relentless in their efforts to lure you inside with the promise of all sorts of graphic exotic experiences. I’ll leave the description of these promises up to your imagination. 🙂

The corner of Soi 7/1 & Sukhumvit Road

Bangkok Hustle Nana That’s Nana station on the upper left of the photo.

One of the popular Thai restaurants in this Soi.

Bangkok Hustle Nana There are 3 or 4 restaurants plus a few small hotels & 6 0r 7 massage parlours.

They call themselves the Bangkok Beer Cafe. 🙂

Bangkok Hustle Nana Just across the road from my hotel, the iCheck Inn Nana.

The pickled Liver traditional British Pub

Anyone fancy a game of pool?

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant

October 31, 2018 by David Herd | 0 comments

El Mercado El Maginifico

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant all rolled into one fabulous venue. El Mercardo as well as being an excellent restaurant pride themselves by including in their charming complex a premium fresh supermarket offering reasonable prices which is most certainly dedicated to food enthusiasts.

This courtyard is usually crowded.

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant I decided on a late lunch to miss the crowd, I’m told it is always better to book to avoid disappointment. Just phone 09 9078 3444.

The fabulous delicatessen

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant An amazing range of cold cuts, cheese etc at El Mercado.

I prefer to sit inside & gaze at the wonderful array of exotic products. 🙂

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant From now on every time I visit Bangkok this will be number one on my list of “must do” restaurants.

And on my left was the refrigerated  seafood section….

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant No wonder the TripAdvisor rating is #394 of 11,116 Restaurants in Bangkok. I find it hard to believe there are 393 better restaurants. 🙂

Seafood section

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant Being such a busy restaurant always means the food is fresh at this Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant . 🙂

Selection of cold cuts

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant On my list for next time, I was too busy today with the seafood.

Did I mention the seafood?

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant

The oysters from France were magnificent.

This was one of the daily specials, I chose the number 4.

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant

Cultivated in Cancale, in the beautiful Bay of Mont St Michel, Brittany region of France, The Special de Cancale this a slightly acidic oyster loved for its taste of iodine, its firm flesh, light nutty flavor.

Lets not forget the desert. 🙂

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant I must admit I’m a sucker for Creme Brûlée.

The wine room

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant Ideal for functions etc, however probably my only disappointment lining in Thailand are the wine prices.

Lots of choices here

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant Perfect for a wine & cheese night.

Back to my favourite section.

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant A wonderful venue as you can clearly see.

The front entrance on the right & grocery shop on the left.

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant Thanks for visiting my Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant photo blog, put El Mercado on the very top of your bucket list.

Delivery is faster than a speeding bullet. 🙂

Bangkok Market Grocery Restaurant Well maybe not quite that fast. 🙂

Looking forward to going here on my next Bangkok trip

Restaurants Sukhumvit 29 Alley Bangkok

Their Hass avocados are shipped from New Zealand and are served in every imaginable form and flavor. In the crunchy avocado (B240), breaded wedges of avocado are deep-fried for creamy, crispy mouthfuls with a side of sriracha aioli dip. The Avo Burger (prawn B395, chicken B335), meanwhile, really isn’t a burger at all, substituting bread for avocado halves and beef for chicken or prawn, with layers of lettuce, cheese and red onions. On the Thai-fusion end, there’s a tom yam pasta (B395) served with grilled prawns, cherry tomatoes and, somewhat superfluous here, slices of avocado. Avocados are also available for purchase for B89 a piece.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4

March 18, 2018 by David Herd

Improvements to Nana in Bangkok

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 are taking place right now in March 2018. A huge roof is being built over the Plaza & the bars in the centre are being built again.

Lucky Lukes is still the same

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4First bar on the right as you enter.

 VW bar at the back

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 Quite a nice addition to the plaza, apparently it has been here 3 years yet I rarely venture to the back of Nana.

Playschool is an old favourite revamped

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4You gotta love the pink. 🙂

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4Lollipop makes a comeback. It was Suckers & before that Lollipop again.

Here it is in 2017.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4

This to me is the quintessential Nana Plaza photo, sums up many of the customers. 🙂

 Re-building the bars, again.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4This is at least the 3rd time the bars in the centre courtyard have been re-built, I have a feeling the current owners will do it right this time.

Last re-build was 2013, check this link.

Turn the clock back to 1997

ea33f1fd-370b-4fd4-a7d3-233653917273

My first visit was 1997 which was the start of a long and happy connection, not necessarily because of the Thai girls who are there basically to relieve you of your hard earned cash, more because of the great times I have enjoyed with friends from all over the world. Check out this photo blog which showcases them and many of the gorgeous babes we got tangled up with over these decades of decadence. 🙂

Another longtime Nana Plaza bar.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4Rainbow 1 has been at Nana Plaza for as long as I can remember.

Let’s wander down Soi 4

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4This is one of about 4 Hillary bars.

New kid on the block

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4Just a short stroll down Soi 4 on the opposite side of the road.

Located in front of  the old Rajah hotel.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4The bars offer a nice alternative to the rowdy Nana Plaza.

Semi open beer garden

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4At the front of Broadway in Soi 4.

Opposite Broadway is the Red Zone

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4Apart from the new bars there are a couple of high rise buildings under construction, hotels or condos, not sure which.

Used to be Bangkok & before that Spellbound

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 The more things change the more they stay the same. I first came to Nana Plaza in 1996, & here I am again in October 2018 drinking ice cold Tiger beer & listening to the Eagles sing Hotel California, the perfect song for this incredible venue. “You can check out anytime you want but you can never leave.”

Big Dogs has also changed a little.

Big Changes Nana Plaza Plus Soi 4 Still a great spot to watch the arrivals.

The Grill at The Grove

Wine Connection Central World Bangkok

Wine Connection Central World Bangkok Wine Connection Central World Bangkok is called the Grill at the Groove, & is ideally located in the best location in Ratchaprasong district, this central business district is easily accessible via three different Skywalk links between BTS Siam station and BTS Chitlom Station.

Each Wine Connection restaurant has a liquor store where you can purchase wines from all over the world at very reasonable prices.

The Wall St Inn Patpong

Patpong Bangkok’s Famous Red Light District

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District Patpong Bangkok’s Famous Red Light District was where we chose to spend 4 nights at the Wall St Inn, a hotel I last stayed at 24 years ago in 1993.

The Wall St Inn is a great value budget hotel, just book through THIS LINK for an excellent rate.

Silom 4 Alley

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District Lots of good beer bars & restaurants around Patpong.

Opposite the Balcony bar in Silom 4 Alley.

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District Not many people around this area at 6pm.

Except for these 3 idiots. 🙂

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District Did I say idiots? I meant geniuses.

Inside The Balcony Bar

Many good bars to choose from

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District Obviously they get busy later on in the evening.

Molly Malone Irish Pub

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District This good Irish pub is located at 6 Convent Road, Khwaeng Silom, and is rated by TripAdvisor #770 of 9,990 Restaurants in Bangkok.

Not a bad price for a NZ white at Patpong Bangkok’s Famous Red Light District.

 Many good restaurants in Silom.

Patpong Bangkok's Famous Red Light District

I really enjoyed the food & wine at Uminoya but there is a funny story, the skewers were around B250 & the eel B180, or so I thought until the bill came. It was B2100 or $84 aud including 2 large glasses of red, I had made a small error, the eel was B1189 ++, when I ordered it I thought it seemed too cheap. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

July 19, 2017 by David Herd

Typical Bangkok street kitchen

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy over a 4 day period in July 2017. There are so many terrific places to eat in Bangkok, from 5 star hotels to street food & everything in between. The 3 of us guys were wondering if any Thai people actually eat a home. 🙂

Au Bon Pain for breakfast

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy We start our day at Au Bon Pain in Silom or one of the many Starbucks in and around Silom Rd near Sala Daeng BTS station. The coffee & croissants are excellent, my favorite is the ham & cheese at Starbucks.

Here it is

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

A perfect start to the day, add a tall latte for a cost of B230 or $7 usd.

However if you are on a budget

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Foodland (open 24/7) has a breakfast “happy hour”, if you eat before 9.am an American breakfast including coffee & juice will only cost you B62 or $1.80 usd, priceless. 🙂

Le Bouchen in Patpong

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

TripAdvisor rates Le Bouchen #176 of 9,969 restaurants in Bangkok. I think this is a gross exaggeration, don’t get me wrong, the couple of entrees we had were very good, however it’s an old world French restaurant that doesn’t deserve such a high rating. Dishes were Lasagna with lobster sauce & a Lobster bisque in pastry which was quite excellent.

 These were excellent

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy    Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Lasagna with lobster sauce & a Lobster bisque in pastry.

Uminoya Izakaya

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

I really enjoyed the food & wine at Uminoya.

Two excellent dishes

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Funny story of the day, the skewers were around B250 & the eel B180, or so I thought until the bill came. It was B2100 or $84 aud including 2 large glasses of red, I had made a small error, the eel was B1189 ++, when I ordered it I thought it seemed too cheap. 🙂 🙂 🙂

China White 3rd floor Central World

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Really good low cost Chinese food.

I will definitely visit China White again.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy They served the best BBQ pork I have had for a long time.

Roast at The Commons

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

My brother Warren & I both agree the lunch “special” at “Roast” on the top floor is the best value we have ever had in Thailand, & in most other countries as well. There is a choice on entree, main course & desert for only B340 or $10 usd.

The busy kitchen at “Roast”.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

We were both so impressed not just with the food, but the presentation, service & cleanliness of this reasonably hard to find top floor restaurant.

 Fresh vegetables in Patpong

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Thai people has taken street to an art form. Follow THIS LINK for more Thai street food.

Capri pizzas at Asiatique

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy This is definitely one of my favorite photos.

 Chicken skewers look good here.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy The Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy continues, there is temptation around every corner.

The Wine Connection

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy There are about 6 branches in Bangkok, this one is in Silom. Choose your wine from their well stocked cellar.

My favorite dish at Wine Connection

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Garlic prawns cooked exactly like I used to have them in Australia 40 years ago. 🙂

Ice cream shop at Central World

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy We used our willpower & resisted the temptation until we got to Swensen’s at Siam Paragon. 🙂 Can you believe TripAdvisor rate Swensen’s  #166 of 10,489 Places to Eat in Bangkok.

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy

The frenzy continued in Pattaya, here is Ray overwhelmed by the size of the schnitzel at Lekerle.

Well that’s all for now folks, farewell from EmQuartier

Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy Many thanks for visiting my Three Aussies Bangkok Feeding Frenzy photo blog.

All the Bangkok photos are here.

When I’m in Bangkok I like to stay in Sukhumvit Soi 11, here is an excellent budget hotel, if you USE THIS LINK you will get a great rate of around B1100 per night, or $30 USD.

The best Bangkok budget hotel I have ever stayed in.
